Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill cover the new issue of New York Magazine, which means that the promotional tour for Moneyball starts now, at any moment. The film gets released a month from now, and I?m actually looking forward to seeing it. Long-term readers of the site know that my Brangeloonie status is mostly because of my love for Angelina Jolie - I could take or leave Brad Pitt most of the time. He?s grown on me through the years, and I think he?s grown into a pretty interesting actor who makes unusual choices for his career that often pay off. I think Moneyball will be one of his career successes - Moneyball could be seen as a standard-issue sports movie about some inspiring event. It?s the kind of movie that fathers will take their sons to, and mom will come along because Brad Pitt is in it and he doesn?t have a gross beard in this one. But the behind-the-scenes story of Moneyball, detailed in this NY Mag piece, is fascinating, and I think Brad should get a lot of credit for staying with a project that people weren?t gung-ho about, and a project that nearly ended Steven Soderbergh?s career. Here are some highlights from the piece:
The closer we get to fall, the more we root for long shots. And Moneyball, which opens September 23, is one such underdog. Michael Lewis?s 2003 book focused on Billy Beane, the general manager of the then-impoverished Oakland A?s, who used a kind of quantitative analysis known as sabermetrics to create a winning team and, more miraculously, to combat the huge payroll inequities between baseball?s richest and poorest organizations. Beane?s quixotic attempts to reform a hidebound system and turn a ragtag starting lineup of last-chancers into champions forms Moneyball?s heart. But consider that the above summary hinges on words like sabermetrics and payroll inequities, and you begin to understand why?even with the dogged support of Brad Pitt?Moneyball took nearly a decade, three directors, three writers, an almost complete recasting, and a public collapse before it got made. ?There were some hard days,? says Pitt. By which he means years.
?There were problems, beginning at the source. Lewis?s book is less a narrative than a riveting Gladwellian case study in which a single outlier occasions a series of meditations on the risk-averse institution of baseball. This is not something that screams adaptation, Pitt says, citing ?the difficulty of making a movie whose front window is dressed with economics and science and math.?
Pitt came aboard in late 2007 to play Beane and quickly ?became obsessed? as well. ?I saw it as a story about justice,? he says. ?How is a team with a $40 million payroll going to compete with a team with a $140 million payroll and another $100 million in reserves? Any talent they grow is going to get poached by the rich teams. That became really interesting to me.?
For Pitt, Moneyball also evoked ?films about process,? particularly the seventies movies he loved. ?I thought of The Conversation: How do you tap a phone? Or Thief, with Jimmy Caan: How do you crack a safe?? Pitt says. ?And I saw in it a guy who had an obsessive quality like Popeye Doyle,? from The French Connection. ?I don?t really like big character-arc epiphanies. What I most loved about those seventies films is that the characters were the same at the end as at the beginning. It was the world around them that had shifted.? In Beane, he says, ?I saw a man going up against a system, questioning the reasoning: Just because we?ve been doing it this way for 150 years, why shouldn?t we change it??
[Director Bennett] Miller knew Hill socially and felt he could thrive in the role. ?Jonah is brilliant in a way that might not be evident from the roles he?s played before,? Miller says. ?He has a near-encyclopedic knowledge of movies. And I also knew he was interested in breaking out of whatever box he was in.? For his part, Hill felt he?d found a project?and a director?that might allow him to grow up a little. ?A lot of times you?re funny as a way of not having to say anything real about yourself. Bennett knew that there are whole days when I?m not funny at all,? he says, laughing. ?And this character has sweet moments, but no jokes or wisecracks.?
?Jonah?s a revelation in this thing?he?s a study in reserve,? says Pitt, who saw Hill?s potential in his earlier films. ?I think the most interesting work that?s been going on in the last couple of years is what the comedy guys have been doing. Guys like Jonah and Russell Brand and [Seth] Rogen and a few others ? they picked up on an irreverence that started with Adam Sandler and continued with Will Ferrell, but they?ve been grounding it in a kind of pathos and humanity. I find it really strong work.?
?I don?t mind the struggle as long as the work amounts to something in the end,? says Pitt, who ended up with a producer credit as well. ?It was really Bennett who finally cracked it. His anxiety not to do anything conventional ultimately formed what this would be. At the same time, everyone involved in Moneyball, at every stage, was very passionate. But what most everyone gleaned from the book was very different. I look at the movie now, and I feel everyone?s fingerprints are on it. It?s been ? well, listen. It?s been an interesting process.?

That?s sweet what Brad says about Jonah - I hope Jonah and Brad are as tight as they seem, and it seems like Brad could possibly be a good friend and champion for Jonah to have in the coming years.
Sigh? I totally want to see this movie. And I don?t know anything about baseball.

Still plugging away at his current project, Brad Pitt was seen on the set of ?World War Z? in Glasgow, Scotland yesterday (August 18).
The ?Fight Club? hunk donned a navy blue jacket and jeans as he paced around the lot with his female on-set assistant nearby.
And once Brad is done with ?World War Z? he?ll be hopping behind the camera to produce ?Twelve Years a Slave,? to be directed by Steve McQueen.
The film is based on the 1853 memoir of Solomon Northup, a black man who was born free and kidnapped into slavery.

How cute are these photos? Yesterday, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie took the Empress, Shiloh, and the twins to a puppet show in England. The show is called ?the Puppet Theatre Barge? which takes place literally on a barge on the Thames. From the stuffed animals the kids are holding, my guess is that part of the puppet show involves dinosaurs, right?
Anyway, these are some of the first photos of Vivienne where I didn?t feel like she was on a cusp of a major hissy. I?ve always said that about Viv - she just has one of those faces where she always looks like she?s about to break out in an earth-shattering wail. But now she?s a big girl, and her mom even let her walk on her own, and she looks happier - Brad is carrying Knox, who definitely seems like the more easy-going twin. I think Knox looks a hell of a lot like Brad, don?t you? Although Knox?s hair looks like it?s got some ginger to it. I swear, Knox is going to end up looking like Michael Fassbender. And that?s going to be awesome.
Thoughts on Vivienne?s oufit? She seems to like more girlish ensembles - at her age, Shiloh was already dressing like a tomboy, so at least we?re going to be spared tabloid covers about how Vivienne is 3-year-old lesbian, because she wears dockers and likes to play rough with her brothers. I like Viv?s little Mary Janes! So cute.

He?s no stranger to traveling in style, and Brad Pitt was spotted arriving at his temporary UK home via helicopter on Friday (August 12).
The ?Curious Case of Benjamin Button? stud looked to be in good spirits as he hopped out of the chopper on the Polo field in Richmond which is just around the corner from his digs.
Hopefully, Pitt has a few days off to enjoy the weekend as he has been super busy working on his upcoming film ?World War Z.?
The official synopsis for the flick hit the web this week and says that the film will revolve around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.?

I always forget that Maddox Jolie-Pitt has the same birthday as my mom. Maybe that?s something I should NOT try to remember, right? Anyway, Maddox?s birthday was Friday, and the little guy turned the big 10. I don?t remember my tenth birthday, but I?m sure it involved ice cream cake and?? Maddox?s birthday was fancier, of course. Madd got to go to a show in London! Angelina and Brad took Madd and the three other older kids to see a matinee of Wicked on London?s West End. These are photos of the clan as they leave the theatre. Brad has been filming around London for weeks now, and I guess they haven?t made the move to Scotland yet. Tell me this - is it weird that Maddox had to spend his birthday with his younger siblings? What if his birthday wish was ?some alone time without being overrun by younger children??
Maddox Jolie-Pitt and his famous family took a trip to the marvelous land of Oz for his tenth birthday. On Saturday, a day after Maddox turned 10, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt treated their eldest to a matinee performance of Wicked — the smash Broadway musical — on London’s West End.
Maddox was photographed with mom Jolie, 36, dad Pitt, 47, and sister Shiloh, 5, near the theater. Sister Zahara, 6, and brother Pax, 7, were also on hand for the theater event. Word of the superstar brood’s presence spread to the cast of the show.
“There was definitely a big excitement backstage! Everyone was on a high,” a Wicked castmember tells Us Weekly. And the Jolie-Pitts weren’t perched a in a VIP box, either — sitting in the orchestra, but surrounded by a few empty, reserved seats.
What did Maddox, Shiloh and the gang think of the show, about the earlier lives of witches of Oz (Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North)?
“They were very happy and quite quiet,” the castmate says. “The children seemed fascinated by the spectacle.” The group did not, however, visit backstage.
The family have been hanging out in England as Pitt shoots World War Z — and, despite Saturday’s fun outting, Jolie’s not having the best time ever.
“She’s not pleased being at home while he’s on set,” an insider told Us. “These are the longest hours he’s spent on a set in a while, so it’s just her and the kids with not much to do.”

Does anyone else find it amazing that the kids were so well-behaved? Those are four little kids, in the middle of a crowded theatre, seeing an exciting show. If they got over-excited, it would be perfectly understandable. But reportedly, they just enjoyed the show and they were good kids. Is it possible that they just really are good kids and not the wild hellions that the tabloids claim?
You can also see in the photos that Shiloh is clutching a stuffed, winged monkey doll from the show. How come Shiloh gets a doll on Maddox?s birthday? MOM!!! Also: Brad looks hot in blue. Angelina looks meh. I?d rather see her in black than nude, though.

Making for quite the family adventure, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt stepped out with the brood in London, England on Saturday (August 6).
The "Mr and Mrs Smith" co-star couple were joined by Maddox, Pax, Zahara and Shiloh as they hit the Victoria Theatre to check out "Wicked" a day after Maddox's 10th birthday.
As previously reported by GossipCenter, Brad and Angelina are in London as Pitt continues to film his labor-intensive new film "World War Z".
The stay in the UK comes after the Hollywood power couple took to the 17th Sarajevo Film Festival the previous weekend so that Angelina could collect the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award.

Being honored with a special tribute, Angelina Jolie was joined by Brad Pitt at the closing ceremony of the 17th Sarajevo Film Festival on Saturday (July 30).
Held at the national theatre in downtown Sarajevo, the couple worked the red carpet before Miss Jolie was presented with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award.
Overwhelmed by the reception from the gathered crowd, the "Wanted" actress reportedly fought back tears upon getting a seemingly non-stop ovation after being introduced by actress Zana Marjanovic.
During her speech, Jolie graciously said, ?I?m so happy to be in this remarkable city in this beautiful country and I?ve spent the last year lucky enough to experience not just the warmth and the hospitality of the local people but also your extraordinary talent."
Continuing on about her experience shooting her directorial debut "In the Land of Blood and Honey" in Bosnia, Angelina stated, "In my career, I have never worked with such disciplined and talented artists as I was able to this last year."

How many more times are we going to have to go back to 2004? How many times are we going to have to revisit the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith? What is this obsession? Is it because we still don?t really know what went down between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and when, and where, and how? I suspect that even if Brad and Angelina did a press conference today and said ?We boned for the first time on Blah Day, 2005? it would still be one of the biggest entertainment stories EVER. Anyway, Page Six has an ?excerpt? from a Hollywood producer?s memoir, even a cursory connection to Brangelina is still super-important:
An unauthorized book detailing a Hollywood producer’s former life as an Israeli secret agent says he witnessed Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie fall for each other on the set of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” while Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston.
According to “Confidential: The Life of Secret Agent Turned Hollywood Tycoon Arnon Milchan,”by Joseph Gelman and Meir Doron, “Milchan introduced Pitt to Jolie and immediately sensed that there was a spark between them.”
Despite denials from Pitt and Jolie that their romance began before his split with Aniston, the book alleges, “A passionate romance ensued, with one slight problem . . . Pitt was married to [Aniston] . . . when Aniston kicked Pitt out of the house, all hell broke loose.”
Milchan is quoted, “When I heard that Brad left home . . . I offered that he stay at my house in Malibu. He drove to the set . . . on a motorcycle, and he wore a wrap-around helmet with a tinted visor so no one could recognize him.”

Specific dates or GTFO. What?s interesting, to me, is that the bigger story seems to be that this Milchan guy was laundering Israeli money through Hollywood for years and years and barely anyone noticed. Probably because everybody was still fighting over when exactly Brangelina started boning.

Getting friendly a female crew member, Brad Pitt was spotted chatting it up with a super-cute "World War Z" production employee while on the UK set earlier today (July 18).
As the nearby shutterbugs zeroed in, the 47-year-old actor could be seen laughing over some seemingly lively conversation with the good-looking staff member.
Meanwhile, rumors over Brad and Angelina Jolie's reported upcoming nuptials are being put to rest after the mayor of South of France, Michael Latz, spoke out over the matter, telling press, "There are no plans for them to marry that I know of ? and I would know."
Latz furthered dispelled the notion, explaining, "Every year, the rumor resurface. More noise from the American press to sell a few more pounds of paper."

Yesterday, Us Weekly released what must have been the jackpot millionth cover story involving ?Brangelina? and ?wedding?. At this point, all of the variations on this theme have been exhausted, but Us Weekly still made the panties of Brangeloonies everywhere a little bit damp when they claimed that the wedding is totally on, and that three different sources told them so. By the way, I read Us Weekly?s cover story last night (the full story), and there was just one hilarious line that really stood out: ?Brad and Angelina think large, glitzy weddings are tacky.? According to the gerbils, I suppose. OMG! So Brad thought his first wedding was tacky? And they think the royal wedding was tacky? Imagine what they’ll think of Kim Kardashian’s mess! Anyway, I guess the gerbils must have been on some really intense heroin high (they borrow it from Angie!), because People Magazine is now telling Us Weekly to STFU.
Those distant wedding bells that are supposed to be sounding for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are even further away than you think. Contrary to reports, multiple sources tell PEOPLE the couple won’t be walking down the aisle any time soon.
Calling the latest rumors “false,” one source says, “There is no evidence nor any single truth” to recent published reports that the couple will wed this summer or in the next few months, though the couple remain open to one day tying the knot.
Besides, they are too busy with projects and causes close to their hearts ? Pitt on set abroad filming his latest movie, World War Z, and Jolie just returned to Los Angeles, having spent family time with their children on Pitt’s Malta film location.
After shooting, Pitt will be busy with promotion for Moneyball and Cogan’s Trade, and Jolie will put the finishing touches on her directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey.
Last month, in her role as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Jolie also visited two islands in the southern Mediterranean Sea to highlight the crisis in the region, which is absorbing an unprecedented wave of asylum seekers fleeing starvation and political upheaval in Africa.
Not that the couple seem to be down on the thought of marriage ? and a few recent interviews helped fan the rumors.
Jolie, 36, told ABC News last year she and Pitt would get married if their kids ? Maddox, 9, Pax, 7, Zahara, 6, Shiloh, 5, twins Knox and Vivienne, 3 ? asked them to, saying, “I think it would be hard to say no to the kids.” And Pitt, 47, told USA Weekend, “The kids ask about marriage. It’s meaning more and more to them. So it’s something we’ve got to look at.”
Add to that construction going on at Chateau Miraval, their home in the south of France, as well as the recent passage of gay marriage legislation in New York state (Pitt once said he and Jolie would get married when everyone legally can), and the rumor mill churns away!

So it?s not like People Magazine has gotten a hardcore, named-source denial either, they?re just being told by ?multiple sources? that Brad and Angelina ?have no plans? while Us Weekly?s ?multiple sources? keep saying ?they do have plans.? My guess is that People Mag wouldn?t have run with the denial unless they got a confirmation somewhere high up the Brangelina food chain (higher than gerbil of doom?!?!).
Lainey posited an interesting theory yesterday about the current round of marriage rumors - Lainey thinks that whether or not they?re actually planning something, they both want people to talk about them getting married, because of the presumptive Oscar campaigns that will be waged. I guess Brad is already thinking ahead to Tree of Life?s Oscar chances? But I don?t think Angelina has anything coming out.
Last thing - I wish we had access to these new photos of Angelina, Shiloh and the Empress exiting LAX yesterday. Empress Z?s shank-face is so magnificent, and Shiloh is just? she?s going to be such a beautiful woman.
