Jessica Alba and her Honest Company are being sued for $5 million for the company?s seemingly defective products, plus there are claims that the products are not as ?all natural? and ?chemical free? as Alba claims. I?ve been surprised to see Alba fighting back against the claims and the lawsuit, and she?s even been doubling down on The Honest Company?s products and its expansion. Alba?s Self Magazine cover story doesn?t mention the lawsuit, likely by design. The gist of the write-up is that no one can stop The Honest Company (now worth $1.7 billion) and the company is even expanding in Asia. Here are some highlights from the piece:
Her business acumen: ?I?ve always been business-minded. I approached Hollywood like a business. I was very calculated. I wanted to be treated like a guy; I wanted to put asses in seats. I saved my money, invested wisely and marketed myself. I’ve been building my own personal brand over time.”
Why she made The Honest Company: ?I was horrified by the realities around the use of chemicals, and also the link that these chemicals have to a lot of illnesses, from obesity to lung disease to cancer, allergies, eczema?all of it. I was bringing this little person into the world and I thought, I want her to be healthy. It was challenging to find products that were accessibly priced and effective. I was like, ?It?s just gotta be easier for people.’?
Imposter Syndrome: “For a long time, I didn’t think I was smart. I felt like an impostor. It’s not until you feel whole in yourself that you fit in anywhere. And it took me becoming a mom to actually feel that way.”

Part of me doesn?t like the ?treat me like a guy? or ?I approach things like a man? argument. That being said, I?ve been accused of approaching life like a dude as well, so maybe I?m not the one to speak on that. Good for her for saving her money and investing wisely and all of that, but let?s be real ? her ?brand? as an actress was never that great. Her brand was ?pretty actress with a hot body? and ?actress who doesn?t see the point of screenwriters.? I think she did the right thing by focusing her energy on The Honest Company rather than her action career, is what I?m saying.

The gorgeous ?Good Luck Chuck? actress works her magic in the beach-themed photo spread, including plenty of skin-revealing ensembles.
Of her billion-dollar Honest Company, Jessica explained, ?I?ve always been business-minded. I approached Hollywood like a business ? I?ve been building my own personal brand over time. Jessica Alba covers the new issue of Allure. After strongly disliking Alba for so many years, I?ve sort of coming back around to liking her slightly and admiring her business sense. Do I think The Honest Company is perfect? Nope. But she grew it out of nothing and now it?s worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Still, it?s good to remember that Alba began her company shortly after Gwyneth Paltrow began experimenting with the actress-as-lifestyle-guru model, which has now taken off to a crazy degree. Gwyneth recently spoke about she feels it?s ?slightly misogynistic? to compare and contrast actresses? lifestyle sites/companies, and Alba does the same thing in her Allure interview:
Her thoughts on the Goop comparisons: ?What I think is unfair is to lump actresses together. People aren’t lumping Justin Timberlake and Ashton Kutcher together. They do other businesses. I think it’s expected that when you get success in one area, you’re supposed to evolve and try to do something else?especially in business, and especially if you’re a man.”
Whether she feels strongly about acting: ?I did.?
Focusing less on acting: “I never wanted to play into a stereotype, where it’s like, ‘Oh, you’re just the girl who gets saved by the guy,’ and she doesn’t know how to make decisions, and she gets overwhelmed with all this stuff happening around her?Women are freaking resilient.?
She would still do nudity for a film if she wanted to: “If there’s a role where I feel comfortable doing that, sure. It’s just I never felt like being naked was going to make the movie any better. If anything, it was just going to exploit me for no reason.”
Her husband: “Gosh, it wouldn’t really be possible without him. He helped me put together my initial business plan. He was always my biggest cheerleader but never gave me unrealistic expectations and never criticized me so much where I felt defeated. Having someone who genuinely has your back, no matter what, there’s nothing like that…. It’s a real unconditional love…. The partner that you choose to go through life with you, that’s your chosen family.”

Well?first of all, we do lump actors together when they?re doing very similar things around the same time. If Justin Timberlake and Ashton Kutcher both launched tech companies within a few months of each other, we would be making comparisons. If Jennifer Aniston launched a tequila company, we would compare it to George Clooney?s Casamigos too. We compare and contrast when there is a very obvious trend, and right now, for actresses, that trend is lifestyle companies/websites. Alba?s Honest Company IS different than Reese Witherspoon?s Draper James, of course, but it still fulfills the notable trend of actresses pursuing other businesses in a similar genre. Basically, I feel fine with Gwyneth, Reese, Blake and Jessica getting the same kinds of questions because they?re honestly all doing variations on a theme.

In the just-released spread, the ?Sin City? actress looks stunning in an elegant floor-length scarlet gown with bold red lipstick and never-ending legs.
Of the Braun product, Jessica explains, ?I love fashion and being able to express myself through my style. I?m all about being prepared and on top of my beauty routine, so I always make sure I have smooth skin, which means I never have to feel limited by my wardrobe choices. Up until now she?s had nothing but glowing reviews of her Honest Company products, but now it seems Jessica Alba has hit her first major snag.
Apparently, consumers have found the Honest Sunscreen Lotion isn?t as effective as advertised given the reduced zinc content and various other natural ingredients.
As a result, Jessica and her partner Christopher Gavigan say they are ?taking every precaution to ensure that it will keep you healthy and happy. I have to admit that in the past year especially, I?ve done a 180 on Jessica Alba. I used to think she was a marginally talented jackass who repeatedly claimed she was too beautiful to succeed in Hollywood and that when her films bombed, it was never her fault. And in truth, she was that woman. But she?s managed to make herself into a highly successful businesswoman and overall better person over the past four years or so. Her interviews are much better, her outlook on life seems to be much more tolerant and friendly and she just impresses me. Anyway, Alba has a new interview with Yahoo Parenting ? go here to read the full piece. She?s shilling The Honest Company?s new line of feminine products with cute packaging. Some highlights:
On judgy mothers: ?I know as a mom ? and as a new parent ? I felt confused. And I felt judged. Doesn?t it feel like the mean girl thing from high school sort of just transforms into adulthood through motherhood? I think it has to do with hormones, right? I mean, this is the first time I?m actually saying this out loud, but that mean girl stuff happens when your hormones are going crazy. And then your hormones go crazy again when you?re pregnant and having a baby. And even when you?re breastfeeding. And I feel like maybe it?s just all those hormones, and people don?t know where to put their energy, so they just start clashing.?
The Honest Company supports breastfeeding & formula feeding: ?The overall community online was either one or the other. And a lot of my friends did both. So I wanted to develop a real dialogue, and create a line that?s for everyone. So whether you want to breastfeed, or whether you want to supplement feed, we?re going to give you the best in both areas.?
Giving advice to new moms: ?Now I?m one of those moms that gives you too much advice that you may or may not want. Usually, you don?t want [it]. But I think the biggest thing is that what works for you, or what works for your friend, isn?t going to work for everyone ? there is no right or wrong. I have two very different girls. And the way that I parent one is different than the way that I parent the other. There?s no cookie-cutter way of going about it. And I think we as women ? and as moms ? we need to show younger girls that we support each other no matter what. And to try and not be so judgmental.?
She isn?t concerned about social media comments about her kids: ?I don?t know any different. I?ve been in the public eye for so long now, it?s just part of my day to day. Do I like it? No. Is it weird? Totally weird. It?s never not weird. We just try to get on with our life and ignore it.?
She doesn?t give her daughters an allowance: Honor?s ?not quite old enough to do hardcore chores? But she makes her bed and she cleans her plate and she has nice manners. Things like that. She doesn?t get paid for that. That?s just like, you have gotta be! That?s the way we are as a family. When she gets older, we can talk about chores and money and stuff. She?ll just blow it ? on candy, probably.?

Honor is 7 years old ? do you think that?s too young to have an allowance? I don?t think it?s too young. I was getting an allowance at that age. I think it?s important to teach kids about money and the value of things. But Alba seems to be doing other things well. I like this: ?she makes her bed and she cleans her plate and she has nice manners. Things like that. She doesn?t get paid for that.? Good. Parents shouldn?t pay kids for having nice manners! As for Alba?s conversation about judgy moms and The Great Breastfeeding War? I like that she?s staked a position of ?whatever works is fine, stop judging.? Who would have ever thought that Jessica Alba would be the voice of reason in The Mommy Wars?

Living it up in the City of Lights, Jessica Alba attended the Paris flagship store opening for Tory Burch on Tuesday night (July 7).
The ?Awake? actress rubbed shoulders with the woman of the hour Tory Burch as well as Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing as she checked out the brand new retail location.
As for her Honest Company pursuits, Jessica is bringing travel kiosks to major US airports to help parents who fly with their kids. Alba explained, ?I travel a lot, so I know how frustrating it can be to forget or run out of something you need. That?s why I?m happy that travelers can have their needs covered with our new Honest on the Go vending machines.
