Town and Country has a new cover interview with Julianne Moore, 54. (She’s one of those celebrities whose age surprises me every time I look it up.) Moore’s styling is so impeccable that if she showed up on a red carpet like this she would definitely make it into the top beauty moments of the year. They left her hair loose and beachy and paired a bold dark lip and contoured cheek with minimal eye makeup. It works against her pale skin, especially in the incredible jewel-toned velvet dresses she’s wearing, by Dior and Valentino. These images just remind me that Moore can hit it out of the park with the right styling, but she’s hit or miss on the red carpet. I think that just speaks to her willingness to take risks and not take herself too seriously.
T&C’s profile of Moore is delightful. They sent us over some quotes which just don’t do her justice when taken out of the context of the piece. Moore meets their journalist, Mary Kaye Schilling, at the Judd Foundation in her native New York. They tour the perfectly preserved loft and open living space of the late minimalist artist, Donald Judd, and Moore is just thrilled to be there. As someone who loves house museums and modern design, I found her enthusiasm contagious. Here are some of Moore’s quotes:
Julianne Moore on how taking the deep dive into a role?the how and why of a role is one of the things she enjoys most:
?I love that part of the job. I love it every single time. The specifics of being a Jersey cop versus a New York cop, like where you have your badge, where you have your gun, what you might do with your hair. And being a female cop, and what that means in those environments. All these things that signify who you are.?
Moore?s guilty pleasure:
?[Twitter] is the one thing I?m addicted to. I follow a lot of comedians and news sites. I never sit quietly anymore.?
Ethan Hawke, Moore?s husband in Maggie?s Plan, on what it was like to work with her for the first time after having been friends for more than a decade:
?She?s super easy to be around, but also, don?t f*** with her. It was really clear to me at rehearsal that we were now at work, and there was a way she was going to work. Unlike a lot of actors, who wait around for the brilliant director to give them a chance to be as good as they want to be, Julie creates that chance. She?s not waiting for permission.?
Moore on the holidays:
?I like to bake?I always make cornbread at Thanksgiving, which is our favorite holiday to host. We usually have between 25 and 40 people, our family and friends that we?ve known since the kids were little. [Christmas is quieter] just the four of us. My son usually has a basketball tournament. But I love being in the city then.?
Moore on her love of historical homes:
?I think I?ll tell my family that I want an old loft for Christmas. We have a townhouse in the West Village that we renovated 12 years ago, but I?m ready for something new.?

Some of these quotes come from a little two minute interview video which you can see on T&C’s site. Moore laughs at herself and seems to realize how ridiculous it is to want a loft for Christmas, but that’s who she is. She also names her favorite red carpet designers, with Tom Ford, Givenchy and Chanel among them, and her favorite day look designers, along with some of her cherished clothing items.
The online article has more quotes from Ethan Hawke on what a professional Moore is, how humble she is, and how he thinks she got to that point in her career – by showing up and putting the work in. The journalist shares this quote as it applies to Moore, “The one way to be great is to be good over and over and over.” This just brings home how consistently great she is, and how that must have been achieved with a lot of dedication and legwork.

Julianne Moore is adding her voice to the many calling for gun ownership reform following the horrific uptick in random mass shootings. She’s doing so in a way that sounds nonthreatening to gun owners and is quite practical. Moore is advocating for background checks to gun licensure in a process which she compares to the reform in the automobile industry. She likens it to the way that people apply for driver’s licenses and makes it clear that she does not want to weaken the second amendment. Moore is also enlisting the help of her famous friends to join the cause. She’s partnering with the established gun safety nonprofit group, Everytown for Gun Safety, to create a celebrity offshoot of the organization called the Everytown Creative Council. Here’s some of what she told People, with more at the source:
Joining forces with Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in the U.S., Moore is now launching the Everytown Creative Council, which includes members of the creative community who support gun violence prevention.
“As actors, we are citizens first so we believe in the Constitution and the Second Amendment,” Moore says. “But 92 percent of the people in the United States are in favor of background checks, too, so I don’t feel like I’m in the minority. I definitely feel like I’m in the majority here.”
The actress equates gun safety with strives that have been made in the automobile industry as well. “For cars, you have to have training and you have to have a license, and you wear seat belts and we have airbags and we have all of these things in place that have reduced fatalities unbelievably,” Moore says. “And it was a totally unregulated industry at first. I feel like something that is very sensible and straight forward can be done also with guns.”
Moore hopes the Council will ultimately help create more awareness for change. “Call your state legislator, lobby for it in your own community. Talk about it culturally, too, there are plenty of gun owners who are interested in safety,” she says.
“I know people who own guns who have a gun safe because they have children in their house. These are responsible people. By talking about it, we can admit it’s a problem and we can admit that we want to work together to solve it.”
To date, 79 celebrities including Steve Carrell, Reese Witherspoon and Ellen DeGeneres have already joined the Council and the list continues to grow. “I was going through my address book alphabetically. That’s all I did. ‘Please, are you interested,’ and the response has been overwhelming. I’m so, so thrilled. Everybody feels this way about this issue,” Moore adds. “I feel like with gun safety, there have been many people who feel threatened by saying something but I don’t think I’m saying anything that’s unreasonable. With all of these rights that we have in our Constitution come a great deal of responsibility, and I think the founding fathers would agree with me.”

I’ve actually made similar points to my friends – that gun ownership is easier than getting a license to drive and that it should have similar safeguards in place. I don’t know this from direct experience as I’m not a gun owner. I might go farther than Moore in my regulation recommendations, but she’s focusing on solutions which have a chance of being implemented in our gun-happy nation.
Noted economist Malcolm Gladwell did an interview on NPR this morning outlining the points he made in his New Yorker article about the threshold of violence. Gladwell made the comparison between school shootings and looting, stating that the first school shooters at Columbine (I’m not writing their names) were significantly disturbed, but that once something catches on more people (teens) are willing to join, similar to the way that looting and rioting spread in a city. As for stopping the spread of gun violence, he said that it’s not as simple as the news media refusing to use the names of mass murderers (although of course the media doesn’t do that) because the shooters become famous online. Gladwell downplayed access to guns, which seemed incredibly short sighted.
Germany was facing a school shooting issue after two high profile cases. They instituted tougher gun laws following the Wittenburg shooting in 2009, including strict registration requirements and a national gun registry. Mass shootings were nearly eliminated. Yes ideas can spread but they require the hardware to follow through.

Julianne Moore wears a lot of Tom Ford, who tends to put her in matronly, unflattering looks. So at least she didn’t wear Ford to the Met Gala and switched it up somewhat in black Givenchy. She was accompanied by their creative director Riccardo Tisci, Kanye West’s BFF and the man responsible for Kim Kardashian’s 2013 floral couch dress. This year, Tisci wasn’t quite as passive aggressive with his muse. Her black gown had a classic shape with some contemporary details, like small diamond cutouts along the bodice and sequin fringe across the bustline. Something nice: Moore looks lovely. However she could have looked so much better. This looks like a gown for a lesser awards ceremony, not the Met Gala. At least it’s not actively awful.

Jessica Chastain was in a custom gold Givenchy gown that made her look like a classic screen siren. I love her hair, makeup and that incredible gown. I can only imagine the amount of work that went into making it. It would have been nice to see more of the China theme, but Chastain gets a pass for otherwise looking like perfection. This is one of the best looks I’ve ever seen on her.
Dianna Agron was similarly impressive in a white Tory Burch one shoulder gown featuring crane applique along the skirt. This was a smart way to incorporate the theme in that Cranes are central to Chinese mythology. She had understated styling and let the dress stand out. This is a win for Dianna.

My wish for Julianne Moore?s Oscar dress was that she not wear something utterly embarrassing because one of her ?friends? talked her into it. Like, I get the feeling that she?s worn some bad Tom Ford gowns in the past because Tom Ford talked her into it and I wanted Julianne to just own her style and wear something simple and elegant, because the photos of Julianne holding the Oscar are going to last a lifetime.
Julianne ended up going with a custom-made (by Karl Lagerfeld) Chanel gown which took nearly a thousand hours to construct. Yes, this somewhat bland gown in a shade of ?shiny oatmeal? took a thousand hours to make. Was it worth it? No, it wasn?t. But Julianne did not embarrass herself. And I like how beautifully tailored this is. Her styling was pretty simple too ? a pretty updo and nice earrings. Not the best, but not the worst. Plus, people just love her and I think everyone?s happy that Julianne finally won an Oscar.
Viola Davis in this Zac Posen wasn?t my favorite either, but I still admired the look and of course I worship Viola. Viola was on-trend with this muted color AND with a statement necklace. I have to say, I think this gown looks better in still photos than it did in motion. Zac Posen?s gowns are famously overworked and over-designed, so it?s nice to see a more edited look from him.

While Julianne Moore?s Best Actress Oscar win wasn?t a surprise, it was more than welcome. Julianne?s awards reign this season reminded me of Jeff Bridges? winning streak several years ago for Crazy Heart. We don?t even really remember Bridges? performance in that one particular film, but it was more about it being ?his turn? and ?his time.? Same with Julianne ? is Still Alice her greatest work ever? No, because it?s just another wonderful performance in a career of strong work. Julianne got this because it was her turn, her time and all of the stars aligned for her. And good for her.
Julianne was emotional and funny when she won. At the Spirit Awards, Julianne joked/told the truth about the miniscule budget on Still Alice, saying that she brought her own bras and her own food to the set. For her Oscar speech, it did feel like fait accompli so the emotion wasn?t as strong, but still, she was jazzed.
She thanked her management team first, then her family, then the cast and crew on Still Alice. She spoke about what it meant to play someone with Alzheimer?s and represent their struggles and ?people with Alzheimer?s deserve to be seen.? Finally, she thanked her husband and her children, saying: ?Thank you for my life, thank you for giving me a home!?
Yay for Julianne!!

Not so shockingly, Saturday?s Independent Spirit Awards likely predicted every major award at tonight?s Oscars. There was a split between Birdman for Best Picture and Richard Linklater (Boyhood) for Best Director. Julianne Moore, JK Simmons, Michael Keaton and Patricia Arquette all took home acting honors. The only one in that group who isn?t a sure thing? Keaton. If I was a voting Academy member, I would probably have given it to Eddie Redmayne. But we?ll see.
In any case, Julianne Moore looked pretty good in this Christian Dior cocktail dress. Here?s the thing: I don?t mind redheads in red. I don?t mind redheads in green. But I have issues with any hair color in weird yellow tones. The dress is so shiny that the yellow reads more as gold, but it comes dangerously close to making Julianne look really sallow. Also: I really, really hope her relationship withstands the Best Actress Curse.
Richard Linklater wasn?t at the Spirit Awards, so when he won Best Director, Ethan Hawke came up and accepted the award on his behalf. God help me, I would still hit it. I?m not even sorry.
Winner JK Simmons- he?s totally going to win the Oscar. And good for him. On one of those THR Oscar Ballot pieces, one of the voters referred to him as ?the journeyman actor.? That?s a nice way of saying he?s one of the greatest character actors working today.
Here?s JK?s Whiplash costar Miles Teller. Whiplash is nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, so that?s why Miles is everywhere these days. I?m glad he shaved his ratty mustache (I think it was for a role anyway).
Here?s Oprah and nominee David Oyelowo. I love his suit!!
I love Ava DuVernay?s ensemble. She didn?t win anything, which is a damn shame.

Never lacking in the sex appeal department, Julianne Moore is as hot as ever in her cover shot for the Spring 2015 issue of Los Angeles Confidential magazine.
The ?Boogie Nights? star says she?s thrilled to be nominated for an Oscar for her work in ?Still Alice?- ?To be even in conversation about it, to have people be excited about your work? You know we all love praise. It?s an honor to be discussed in this way. Of course?of course?I?m thrilled. And for a little movie like this, which we barely finished, that people made because they cared about it?and it?s a story about knowing what it means to be a human being, that?s what?s great too. And it makes you feel hope, right??
Additionally, Julianne has a strict rule about leaving her work at work- ?All I know is that I feel like I need to accomplish stuff and I guess I try to do it and just forget it. I really care about it when I?m doing it, but then when I?m done with it I have to be done with it, because there?s nothing else I can do.?
Of her role in ?Still Alice,? Moore notes, ?It?s so very rare that you get anybody?s subjective journey through anything in a film. We all say that we?re aware of our own mortality, but we?re not. It?s always present but we choose to deny it. In this case there?s a woman who?s forced to say, ?The end of my life is coming, and I?m going to have to experience it disappearing.?
And it turns out her husband is a fan of the movie, too- ?I was sitting taking notes and heard these sounds, and I was like, ?Bart?! Are you crying?!? What?s interesting is in as much as Hollywood deals with externalization?with what people look like and that kind of thing?Alzheimer?s really gets to what?s most important, which is who are you on the inside??

This is what worried me. This is what was keeping me up at night (not really) about Julianne Moore?s style leading up to the Oscars. Thus far, she?s been hitting it out of the park. She?s been wearing good-to-great looks at every major event. And it?s been no coincidence that in all of those events, Julianne hadn?t worn anything by Tom Ford. Don?t get me wrong, I love Tom Ford?s designs and I think he?s a genius. And he?s friends with Julianne in real life, and she often calls him her ?favorite designer.? But he almost always makes her look bad. I don?t know what it is. Anyway, she wore this red Tom Ford to the BAFTAs last night. It?s a sophisticated look, and by that I mean she sort of looks like a dominatrix. I don?t hate it, but now I?m so worried that she?s going to wear Tom Ford at the Oscars and it?s going to be SO BAD. PS… Julianne won last night but that’s not shocking.
Dianna Agron in red Lanvin. This is a pretty dress, in a pretty color, on a pretty girl. Is it groundbreaking? Not really. But if she wants to become a bigger Fashion Girl, I?m okay with that.
Patricia Arquette in Pamella Roland. Patricia won the BAFTA for Best Supporting. Something nice: this is an absolutely gorgeous color in general and on her specifically. Not so nice: Patricia cannot pick out clothes to flatter her figure at all.
Lea Seydoux and Monica Belucci, the two new ?Bond Girls? attended the BAFTAs together. Everyone loves Lea?s mustard-yellow cut-out Prada gown but I wasn?t crazy about it. I think the cut-outs were too much, but from the neck up, she was FLAWLESS. Like, she was a young Deneuve. Monica?s black gown was Azzedine Alaia. Too much black on the carpet!

Julianne Moore covers the new issue of The Hollywood Reporter, and the article is excellent. Julianne is a wonderful person (I believe that) but she?s not always the best interview. It?s not that she closed off or sullen with reporters or anything ? I get the feeling that most interviewers don?t ask her the right questions. Or maybe Julianne really felt like talking for her big THR profile. This is obviously part of her Oscar campaign ? incidentally, I can?t believe it?s taken this long for her to get a THR cover ? and if you?re cynical, you can interpret some of her positions as part of an Oscar strategy too. Julianne talks about how she doesn?t believe in God anymore, which could have been a big controversy? except that she puts her atheism in the context of her mother?s death in 2009.
Going into therapy in her early 30s: “I discovered that [my private life] was as important as my professional life. I didn’t spend the time; I didn’t invest. One thing I used to tell my women friends was, ‘There’s an expectation that your personal life is going to happen to you, but you’re going to have to make your career happen. And that’s not true: You have to make your personal life happen as much as your career.’ ”
What she learned from Little Women: “The idea that you’re the center of your own narrative and that you can create your life is a great idea. I totally believe it. I’ve been really lucky, but I feel I’ve completely created my own life.”
Gun control/safety: “I get more reactions on Twitter about gun safety than anything else. I don’t understand how we’re threatening the Second Amendment because we’re talking about gun safety rules. That, to me, is really shocking.”
She stopped believing in God when her mom died: ?I learned when my mother died five years ago that there is no ‘there’ there. Structure, it’s all imposed. We impose order and narrative on everything in order to understand it. Otherwise, there’s nothing but chaos.”
Childcare: “When my kids were babies, they traveled all over the world with me and came to work with me every day, and it was never frowned upon. I am very fortunate in that I can afford to have child care, and I always hired someone who was young and very flexible ? so that was always my ‘entourage’: my kids and my babysitter.”

The gun control thing will probably go over pretty well with the Academy. The atheism will be fine, because it?s more about losing her mom. My one peeve: she?s referring to the young nannies she hired as ?babysitters.? That still bugs me. If you?re hiring someone young and flexible to fly around the world with you and your kids while you film on location, that?s a nanny. Not a babysitter.
She also talks about her filmography and her interests outside of work (decorating, learning languages) and all of that. It is a good read.

Julianne Moore has just been radiant this awards season. Maybe it?s the radiance that comes from a winning streak. Maybe she just takes excellent care of her skin. Maybe she?s simply a happy person. Whatever it is, she?s never looked better and that goes for her awards style too. What I like about her green Givenchy is that it?s not an in-your-face ?look.? The dress is pretty simple, really. It?s an easy silhouette, in a bold emerald tone, and her styling was kept very simple too. And that?s why it works. After years of seeing Julianne try and fail with high-fashion looks, she?s edited it down and she ends up looking classic. Watch it though, now that I?ve said all of that, she?ll look like ten kinds of hell at the Oscars.
As for this emerald green ? I love a redhead in green. And the color reminds me of the Prada she wore to the Oscars more than a decade ago. The one bad thing I have to say is that she could have rethought the Chopard earrings.
Here?s Julianne?s acceptance speech when she won Best Actress for Still Alice. I love that she name-checked her time on a soap opera! She played twins on As the World Turns.
Here?s another favorite, Tatiana Maslany. Her guy is Tom Cullen (he?s Lord Gillingham on Downton Abbey). Her dress is Oscar de la Renta. It?s a bold choice for her ? when she was on the E! show, you could see the dress in close-up and it was stunning and different. Those stripes were really amazing. In these photos, the stripes look kind of grey though. Still, this was a good choice for her and I hope she gets even more attention for the crazy work she does on Orphan Black.
