Everyone was clucking at the Oscars that Reese Witherspoon and Tina Fey were wearing the same shade of deep purple, which I didn’t really get. During the E! Oscars fashion lead-up, Brad Goreski said that jewel tones were going to be one of the big trends this year, which I appreciate as those colors really pop on the carpet. When we have two women in the same red or blue color it’s no big deal, this is just a color we’re not used to seeing. Plus the cut of these two dresses is much different, it’s not like they’re wearing variations of the same dress.
So Reese was in this rather fug Oscar de la Renta strapless gown which would be a typical red carpet dress if it wasn’t for the bizarre bunched up boob shelf with a black bra thing peeping out and the mini bustle at the back. We’ve seen Reese in such amazing, spot on red carpet dresses and it’s like she’s lost her footing. Her usual style is a classic, clean look and this is definitely an ill thought out departure.
Tina Fey, on the other hand, pretty much slayed in Versace. This is how you work a bright color, with a clean dress which has some thoughtful, understated details. I absolutely love the draping in this gown and the way the fabric is gathered to the side to fabric trailing slightly at the waist. This type of draping was popular a few years ago and I like that it’s making a comeback. This is an amazing dress. Check out her necklace. Perfect styling too.
I’m including Tina’s buddy here, Amy Poehler, whom I just feel sorry for. She was in Andrew GN, in a giant black dress with bell sleeves and very large embroidered bugs and greenery. Giant bug embroidery is a thing. The obvious joke here involves squashing.

Ordinarily, I would use the magazine cover for the header image, but after one look at this ^ photo from Reese Witherspoon?s Harper?s Bazaar editorial, I was like, ?Oh, that one is going up top.? I can?t believe Reese agreed to wear that and pose like that. It looks like Gone With the Wind puked on her. It looks like Blake Lively?s Allure of Antebellum is finally coming to fruition. Of course, I don?t have total hate for this editorial ? Bazaar did make Reese hold a piglet for one photo, and I will always love a piglet theme. Anyway, you can read Reese?s profile here. Here are some highlights from the interview:
Her view on life now versus her 20s: ?I?m much more open now. In my 20s, I was scared of everything. I didn?t know what my career was. I didn?t know why people liked my movies. I was wary of interacting with people. I was 25 when ‘Legally Blonde’ came out, 26 for ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, and 29 for ‘Walk the Line’. And I was scared, really scared. Now I feel like a different person. It?s a great thing getting older. You are who you are; you say what you mean.?
On what she thinks about for casting female roles: ?I certainly can’t star in all these movies. I want to get a female perspective on film that would make my daughter understand what it means to be a woman in a different way.?
Her production company has 30 projects in development: ?We’re reading constantly. My brain hurts sometimes. Sometimes I’ve been reading and watching movies for seven days, and I need a break.”
Why she launched Draper James: “Well, it comes from a lot of the same instincts about making movies. I saw an empty space. All these women in the South, they read fashion magazines, but nobody was telling the stories about their upbringing?their mothers, their grandmothers who love getting dressed up. It’s a feminine culture.”
On what she likes to do when she?s at home ?relaxing?: ?My husband would definitely say, ‘She’s very relaxed at home.’ Hmm, I don’t cook much. I used to cook a lot; I relax a lot. You know what I like to do? Reorganize bookshelves and my sock drawer. [My husband] Jim?s like, ?What have you been doing for four hours in your closet?? I?m like, ?Um, reorganizing my underwear???

Honestly, the only thing that made me roll my eyes was the bit about Draper James ? ?I saw an empty space.? Really? Reese launched Draper James after Goop, after Jessica Alba?s Honest Company, after Blake Lively announced that she would be doing Preserve (which failed). Reese was not a trendsetter, she was a trend follower when she launched Draper James. I realize that her ?spin? on lifestyle branding was different ? ?SOUTHERN, Y?ALL!? ? but the fact that she moved into clothing/lifestyle was not some brand new thing for actresses.
Also: I totally get her about reorganizing the underwear drawer. I was trying to quickly reorganize mine a few days ago and I had to stop because I was like, ?OMG, this is going to be a much more intensive process than I originally considered.? Like, it?s probably going to take me more than an hour to reorganize it. And now I have a stack of about twenty panties sitting on the bookshelf in my bedroom. Sigh? I never should have started!

Reese Witherspoon, through her production company Pacific Standard, has optioned the 2010 book Barbie and Ruth: The Story of the World?s Most Famous Doll and the Woman Who Created Her. The 39-year-old actress seems to be eyeing the title role herself. This isn’t the first time: back in 2012, she acquired the rights to Cheryl Strayed’s memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail and played her on the big screen (in the more marquee-friendly titled Wild), receiving critical kudos and an Oscar nomination for her performance.
Barbie and Ruth tells the tale of Ruth Handler (no relation to Chelsea), who created the now iconic doll after watching her daughter, Barbara, playing with paper dolls featuring teenagers, as opposed to the baby dolls that were popular at the time. Handler modeled Barbie on a German adult novelty toy (really – where do you think she got those boobs?) with her husband, who owned the toy company Mattel. The doll debuted in 1959 and has become one of the most popular toys of all time. In fact, one Barbie doll is sold every 3 seconds somewhere in the world. Despite having over 150 careers, the doll has courted controversy over the years for creating unrealistic expectations for girls and even grown women. Ruth handled her critics with aplomb, writing in her 1994 autobiography, Dream Doll: The Ruth Handler Story, “My whole philosophy of Barbie was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be. Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices.”
In 1970, Ruth was diagnosed with breast cancer, and, since she was unable to find a suitable prosthetic breast, she developed her own – using plastic for good for once – and ended up founding a company to produce more realistic prosthesis for breast cancer survivors. She died in 2002 at age 85 from complications after surgery for colon cancer. The woman led a very compelling life and her story is sure to make for an interesting film.
Reese and Ruth do have some things in common, which leads me to believe she’s correct in casting herself as the lead. Pacific Standard, which Reese started with partner Bruna Papandrea, focuses on acquiring movie rights to stories featuring more female protagonists. At Glamour?s Women of the Year event last month, Reese spoke out about the sad lack of female-focused movies, saying, ?Films with women at the center are not a public service project. They are a big-time, bottom line-enhancing, money-making commodity.?
Reese’s production company was also responsible for producing Gone Girl (excellent) and Hot Pursuit (meh). She’s aggressively working to bring more female faces to the big screen and even helping young women improve their economic literacy skills, so this project is completely in line with her girl power vibe. I guess this means that she’s no longer in contention for the real-life Barbie movie that Diablo Cody is writing? But, at 39, it’s probably a given that she would be out of contention to play a living teen-aged doll anyway. Damn you and your ageism, Hollywood!

Here are some photos from the 29th American Cinematheque Award honoring Reese Witherspoon. If you?re anything like me, you thought to yourself, ?Damn, they?re giving those lifetime achievement awards pretty early these days.? But while the American Cinematheque Award used to be more of a lifetime-achievement thing, in recent years they?ve been trying to give it to actors in ?mid-career.? Some previous honorees include Matthew McConaughey (who was on hand to present the award to Reese), Matt Damon, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr. and more. Reese is the first female honoree since Julia Roberts got the award in 2007, so YAY for ladies, I guess. The event is actually a fundraising gala, so there?s that too.
Many of Reese?s friends and colleagues came out to support her, like Matthew, Alexander Payne, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Aniston, Sofia Vergara, Jennifer Garner, Laura Dern and more. The emphasis was on Reese?s role as a woman in the industry, with McConaughey saying something about Reese?s ?powerful femininity,? and Hudson calling Reese a ?true, modern-day feminist.? When Reese accepted her award, she said:
?Women make up 50 percent of the population and we should be playing 50 percent of the roles on the screen. We need more female surgeons, supreme court justices and soldiers ? but on screen. Not just as the girlfriends to famous men.?

That?s somewhat awkwardly worded. I would say, ?We need more female surgeons, Supreme Court justices, soldiers in real life AND on screen, in artistic representation and real life.? Feminism isn?t just about putting more cute blonde ladies in front of the camera, you know.
I?m including some photos from the red carpet below. Jennifer Garner looked crazy-Botoxed, right? Reese?s gown was Dolce & Gabbana, by the way. Very pretty, but I feel like she?s worn that same gown about ten times in the past two years. Also: Ava Phillippe is basically Reese?s clone. A clone with Pink hair!

I?m not trying to be mean, but what?s going on with Reese Witherspoon?s face on the cover of Glamour? I don?t think it?s Photoshop. I think it?s something weird with her brows. Are they too light? Is it a makeup thing? Hm. Anyway, Reese has been named one of Glamour Magazine?s Women of the Year, alongside women like Victoria Beckham, Caitlyn Jenner, Misty Copeland, Cecile Richards and more. You can read Reese?s rather long and rather butt-kissing interview here. Reese really has successfully rebranded herself from ?A-list has-been who got arrested while sh-tfaced in Georgia? to ?recent Oscar nominee, powerhouse producer, lifestyle guru and women?s rights advocate.? Are you buying it?
Working motherhood & choices: ?I’d always ask my grandma, who was so, so smart, why she didn’t work, and she would explain that her parents didn’t approve of her working after she had children. She didn’t feel like she had choices. And I witnessed it all firsthand. Growing up in the South, it was very patriarchal. When I applied to Stanford, I was told by a [male] college counselor, “You’re never gonna get in, don’t bother. They don’t want you.” I said, “I’m going to try.” And I got in! But I wouldn’t be the woman I am if I hadn’t had that conflict to overcome. It has given me an underdog feeling all my life.?
Why she started developing female-driven films: ?I have this drive from my upbringing to be a doer, not just a complainer. I have achieved a certain amount of success, and I felt a responsibility to my daughter and to women in this world to create more opportunities for women. Women of different ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds. We’re 50 percent of the population?Shouldn’t we be in 50 percent of the stories??
How she started developing films: ?I just kept complaining and complaining to my husband. He goes, ?You read more books than anyone I know. Why don’t you start turning them into movies?? So that’s what I did.?
On #AskHerMore at the Oscars: ?I don’t want to discount the beautiful work that the fashion houses do, but somehow, just focusing on what you’re wearing feels reductive. These actresses are there because they made us laugh and made us cry and touched our hearts.?
Potential versus ?proving yourself?: ?Men rise through the ranks because of potential, but women have to prove themselves?while trying to have children and having no family leave. No woman’s getting hired because of her potential. I hope that we can invest more in female potential.??
Legally Blonde & Gloria Steinem: ?I was debating whether to do Legally Blonde, and I saw this interview with Gloria Steinem about how important Goldie Hawn’s role in Private Benjamin was for women; by the end of the movie, the character socked her fianc in the face at the altar because he didn’t understand who she’d become through her journey. I was like, “I feel like Gloria Steinem told me to do Legally Blonde. That’s how Elle Woods is too!” She starts out thinking she’s gonna follow a man, but in the end she’s like, “I don’t need you.”
Her lifestyle brand & being compared to other lifestyle people: ?I’m always confused about that. Is it more fascinating, perplexing, unbelievable that women are entrepreneurs? A [news] magazine printed a [photo-illustration] of me in a ball gown holding a vacuum cleaner, saying I started a company. Last time I checked, I’m not selling vacuums. It was very sexist. Just “Stay in your lane. We like what you do?don’t try be something else.” But guess what: I hope we all have three or four chapters.

My favorite part is when she?s talking about the Lean In stuff, the ?potential? versus ?proving oneself.? It?s very true. But I still think the #AskHerMore stuff is utter horsesh-t though, to the point where I think if Reese ever tried to drip her serious-actress sanctimony on a red carpet again, the interviewer should immediately follow up with questions like ?So how much are being paid to wear this dress? How much are you being paid to wear this jewelry? Why don?t you want to even mention the name of the designer who is paying you to wear this gown? And now, for something more serious: how do you think your white privilege affected your treatment during your 2013 arrest??

A month or two ago, I finally spent some time on Reese Witherspoon?s lifestyle/retail site, Draper James (go here to see). I almost got a headache from the sugary over-hyped SOUTHERN, Y?ALL vibe. I actually live in the South and I?m very happy here and we?re just as modern, crazy, stupid, corrupt, intelligent, artistic and racially diverse as the rest of America. But you would never know that with Draper James. It?s very much like Blake Lively?s ?Allure of Antebellum? Preserve post ? Reese wants to create a vision of a modern Southern lady that?s all about magnolia blossoms, luncheons and linen napkins. And I?m just not sure that really exists beyond some very elite cloisters of Southern society.
Anyway, Reese covers the new issue of Southern Living, which seems like a perfect fit if ever there was one. If there was a magazine called American Citizen: Drunk Blonde, that might be the only thing that would fit better for Reese. In this Southern Living article, Reese actually tamps down her natural instinct to judge everyone. Maybe because she knows how hard it is to be judged, y?all.
She?s not a judgy parent: ?No one?s really doing it perfectly. I think you love your kids with your whole heart, and you do the best you possibly can.?
But she?s a hands-on mom, y?all: ?But, you know, right now I?m feeling sad missing my little 2-year-old, and my daughter?s about to finish her freshman year of high school, and my son has a golf tournament this weekend that I hope I don?t miss.?
Balancing work and motherhood: ?There are some sacrifices you make, and it hurts your heart sometimes, but my kids tell me they?re proud of what I?ve accomplished, and that just means everything. I grew up with a working mom, and I have so much respect for the things she did as a nurse and a teacher. I would never begrudge her that.?
She bought a house in Nashville: ?Everything is a little bit slower here, and I think I?m ready for that in my life again. When I?m here my brain relaxes.?
Her Southern accent: ?Early on, someone said, ?Well, you?re never gonna get a job with an accent like that.? I learned to change it up, but it?s like a pair of slippers that I put on when I?m at home. I start to talk more and more Southern. My kids know when I?m serious. I get really Southern.?

Southern accents are a weird thing ? I grew up in Virginia and I never really felt like I had much of an accent, but then I became more conscious of it in my late teens. Maybe my accent just became stronger as I got older too, because I feel like it?s stronger now than ever before. I can drop it sometimes, but most of the time I don?t even care. So I have a Southern accent. Who cares? I?d rather sound like a hick than have Donald Trump?s totally bizarre New York accent.

Jim Toth and Reese Witherpoon?s marriage served two purposes. It wasn?t just about making Reese a bankable actress and getting her another Oscar nomination (although that was a large part of it). No, Reese and Jim also got married to smooth out his image as a party-loving Hollywood agent constantly knee-deep in wannabe actresses and boozy shenanigans. All of that came out following Reese and Jim?s dual 2013 arrests in Georgia ? he was arrested for a DUI, Reese was arrested for being an AMERICAN CITIZEN (and a drunk and belligerent one at that). My point is that Reese and Jim are still pretty boozy, despite their attempts at an image makeover. Now Star Magazine says that Jim is a total barfly, that he avoids Reese by sitting in his favorite bar for hours on end, four nights a week. Oh, and he hits on the ladies.
Two years after he and his wife were arrested after a night of drinking, sources say Reese Witherspoon?s husband Jim Toth, is still hitting the bottle and causing a ruckus at a local watering hole.
“Jim is a big fan of happy-hour drinks. He comes in multiple times a week by himself to watch whatever sports team is on TV,” says an insider who frequents Tavern Restaurant, just a few miles from Reese and Jim’s Brentwood, Caif., home. “Staff members roll their eyes when he walks in because they know what’s coming.”
“Jim’s drinking habits run the same course every time,” says the regular. “He’ll order a few beers, which then turns into whiskey drinks or strong mixed coctails. Jim will drink in the middle of the day, and by the end of happy hour, he’s shouting at the TV. He doesn’t tip very well either.”
“One day, two young women were seated at the bar watching the baseball game; it was about two in the afternoon. Jim came up to the bar, sat next to them and started chatting them up,” says another regular. “He tried to start up a conversation about the game, but the girls tried to ignore him. The girls got up and left the restaurant thanks to him.”
“Reese and Jim fight like every couple, but the truth is, she isn’t exactly easy to deal with,” says an insider. “She’s very bossy and controlling. Just look at her drunken arrest?you can see what Jim has to put up with. She can also get insecure, and they’ve had fights over this.”
“Given the amount of time he spends in here, you’ve gotta wonder if he just doesn’t want to go home,” says one of the Tavern Restaurant’s regulars. “I can’t imagine Reese is too happy about the time he spends here. I hope, for both their sakes, he’s not drinking away their marriage.”

Does CAA allow their agents to be so boozy in the middle of the day, multiple days of the work week? I know the Hollywood system can still feel like it?s caught in a Mad Men-era, but I seriously doubt that Toth has this much free time to booze it on the regular without CAA noticing and caring. That being said, I believe that he?s a regular at the Tavern, mostly because of this detail: ?He doesn’t tip very well either.? If he tipped well, we would never have heard this story. Because he?s a bad tipper, someone at the bar is selling him out.

The ?Sweet Home Alabama? babe snapped a selfie with the country superstar after his Big Revival Tour performance at the Rose Bowl, and she couldn?t have looked happier.
Ms. Witherspoon captioned the shot, ?What Southern girls do on Saturday night! Gettin? country with @kennychesney.? Reese has always been vocal about her southern upbringing, and she?s even launched a lifestyle website called Draper James to that end.

Adding another credit to her resume, Reese Witherspoon has landed on the front page of the August 2015 issue of InStyle UK magazine.
The ?Legally Blonde? star explains she hasn?t always lived in the lap of luxury- ?I didn?t grow up wearing a lot of shoes. In the summer we just run around barefoot. No [I don't do that now]! I can't even imagine letting my kids do that either."
And given her traditional Southern upbringing, Witherspoon decided to design a lifestyle brand called Draper James to appeal to her peers- "Three years ago, I was in Atlanta shooting a film, and I was struck by the cultural explosion down there. But even though there were wonderful restaurants and music venues, nothing was representing the fashion aspect of the Southern woman. We're not from New York or LA. But we are current; we read InStyle, we love a dinner party, a lunch, and, of course, fashion."
