Demi Lovato has a new podcast and web series called 4D with Demi Lovato. In the first episode, they announced that theyre non-binary. Demi interviewed friend Alok Vaid-Menon for that, whom Demi was introduced to by non-binary artist Sam Smith. Demi and Alok talked about how they first met and how Alok was instrumental in helping Demi understand that they were non-binary. I got a lot out of their talk and came away with a better understanding of what it means to be non-binary. Im still being educated about this and felt like I learned quite a bit. Here are some highlights.
Demi on not living their truth before
In 2018 when I overdosed I feel like the reason why that happened was because I was ignoring my truth. I was suppressing who I really am in order to please stylists, team members or even fans that wanted me to be the sexy feminine pop star. I thought that was what I was supposed to be. Now I just realize its so much more important to live your truth than to ever suppress yourself because thats the type of stuff that happens when you do.
Alok on what it means to be non-binary
We are people who have existed for thousands of years who actually experience ourselves outside of the idea of man or woman, but what I want you to understand is that it comes from a place of deep joy and healing not from a place of doubt.
Demi on being non-binary
Theres nothing more freeing for me than to be unattached to a role that society wants me to play because that I fully believe that gender is just another boundary that separates humanity from divine wisdom.
It would mean the world if people could start identifying me as they/them. I will also be accepting if people slip and say her/she. I know its going to take a while for people to get used to. I just want them to be taking the effort.
Alok on the difference between non-binary and gender non-conforming
Non-binary means that you are not exclusively a man nor a woman. Gender non-conforming means you visibly defy societys ideas of what a man or woman should look like. There could be a lesbian woman who is gender non-conforming because society would expect her to be feminine but maybe shes more masculine but that person wouldnt be non-binary they were still a woman or there could be a non-binary person who might look like what society traditionally expects a woman or a man to be but theyre still non-binary so the difference is really about identity versus expression.
What moving beyond gender norms is about is fighting for your right to determine what your gender is. Which means if you say Im a woman youre a woman if you say a man youre a man its that easy.
Alok on making the decision to come out
So often people dismiss us as fickle or like making it up. We know that theres gonna be backlash, we know that people arent gonna understand us, we know that people are going to make fun of us and we still do this. That actually shows that were living in our truth and yall are the ones that are confused.
Demi on people saying theyre attention-seeking or doing this for their career
For the first time in my life Im putting my well-being over my career. Thats the difference in somebody doing something for attention versus speaking your truth. I know
that not everybody is going to love that. This is me and this is my truth. I can?t shove it down or suppress it any longer or Ill end up where I did a few years ago.

Alok also said that they hear criticism from CIS people that being non-binary is taking away the right for others to identify as male or female, which of course is not the case at all. They said its more important to strive to use the right pronouns and to honor someones gender identity than to get caught up in the grammar. When someone messes up, which we inevitably do, we can just apologize and say sorry I slipped. Demi said we have to change the way that we perceive other peoples truths. It is about having compassion for someones dignity as a human being.
I am bisexual and am in my late 40s. I did not know what that meant or who I was until I was 20 and read about it. I had people tell me it was not a real identity, that it was a trend, and that I had to pick a side. As a result Im still very understated about it. I

Yesterday, Naomi Campbell announced that she had welcomed her first child, a baby girl, at some point recently. People were slightly caught off guard because Naomi really kept the information on lockdown and there were no leaks whatsoever. Naomi is 50 years old and while it?s possible that she could have been pregnant, Naomi has been photographed or seen on video in recent months, and she truly did not appear to be in the last trimester of a pregnancy. It?s far more likely she had a surrogate or gestational carrier. The Daily Mail?s sources say she had a surrogate.
Naomi Campbell has broken her silence on motherhood after announcing she had welcomed a baby girl Tuesday. Shortly after sharing a picture of her babys feet, the 50-year-old supermodel told fans she was honoured and humbled, amid claims shes set to raise her daughter with her secret American boyfriend.
The model is said to have welcomed her baby via a surrogate, with unearthed pictures of the star taken three weeks before her babys arrival showing her out in New York City where she now lives. The British supermodel is living in New York and is understood to have a new boyfriend with whom she will raise the child. Friends yesterday told Daily Mail that they believe Naomi ? who never knew her father and was raised largely by her grandmother ? used a surrogate.
Sources close to the model added to The Sun that Naomi is in a wonderful place and how it finally felt like the perfect time to become a parent.
The insider said: Naomi has really mellowed in the past year and is in a wonderful place in life. She has been living in America with her boyfriend and is really happy. It finally felt like the perfect time to become a mother and she is over the moon. The first lockdown allowed her to stop and take stock of the important things and she decided now was the time to properly look into starting a family.
Naomi reportedly recently told her team that she wants to quit working over weekends, just weeks before making her baby announcement.
[From The Daily Mail]
I hope she?s doing more than just ?not working weekends.? She needs a real maternity leave! Even though the modeling industry is famously ageist, sexist and racist, Naomi still works constantly and books all kinds of jobs. My guess is that she will either hit pause for a time, or she?ll just start working less. I guess she?s living full time in New York now too. Hm. Who?s the secret boyfriend? Several names just flashed into my brain but I?ll keep them to myself. We don?t know!
A beautiful little blessing has chosen me to be her mother, So honoured to have this gentle soul in my life there are no words to describe the lifelong bond that I now share with you my angel. There is no greater love. pic.twitter.com/SYxfeh4yev
