Angelina Jolie has been isolating in LA with her children during the pandemic. She?s got all six kids home with her, although the younger kids are likely keeping up with their visits to Brad Pitt. This is the first time in a long time where Angelina is just HOME, with no far-flung refugee camp to visit or some movie to film. Which might explain why Angelina has been doing a lot of Time Magazine op-eds, Time Magazine videos, and just general awareness-raising around many issues involving the children of the pandemic. Angelina donated $1 million to No Kid Hungry, and now she?s writing letters to advocate for an increase in SNAP benefits:
Actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie is lobbying Congress to increase food assistance to families across the U.S. as the coronavirus pandemic keeps millions in their homes and children out of schools, where many receive free meals. The Academy Award winner, who is well-known for her work internationally with refugees and conservation and human rights groups, wrote a letter to top congressional leaders, shared exclusively with USA TODAY, asking that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits be increased to help children who she says are going hungry because schools are closed and parents are out of work.
Many of the most vulnerable children in America have missed nearly 740 million meals at school, due to closure resulting from the rapid spread of coronavirus. With parents facing lost jobs and wages, many of these children are going hungry, she wrote in the April 20 letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
While strengthening SNAP will not alleviate all of the challenges low-income families are facing during the public health emergency, it will help ensure that fewer children go to bed hungry in our country, she said.
Congress has increased food assistance benefits by more than $15 billion amid the pandemic but Jolie and advocates argue more is needed, a proposal that Democrats have similarly demanded but failed to pass muster with Republicans in the last round of stimulus funding approved late last month. About half of all U.S. public schoolchildren rely on free or reduced-price meals. And while schools across the country have tried to continue providing grab-and-go lunches to those in need, some have halted such programs or limited them as workers have contracted COVID-19.

Yeah, Moscow Mitch won?t do sh-t about it. I doubt many Republicans will care, even though many of them come from districts or states which rely heavily on SNAP benefits. USA Today also says that before Angelina sent the letter, she did a video conference call with local food banks and No Kid Hungry, and they all discussed the very real cuts to food-assistance programs under the Trump administration, and many of those cuts were already in motion before millions of children lost their one meal a day at public school. During the call, Angelina apparently grew more and more upset with the realities of so many American children going hungry. She reportedly said, ?I knew that there were problems in America. I knew that there was poverty. I could not believe when I realized how many schoolchildren in America were dependent on a meal to not go hungry. I was so disgusted that we have gotten to this point as a country. Me too.

Is Angelina Jolie already a little bit stir-crazy? Perhaps. Over the past three years, she?s gotten used to spending time in one place for months at a time, although as we?ve seen, she gets itchy to travel and explore and visit far-flung places, often with her kids. She?s been in LA with her children for months though, and now Maddox is home from South Korea, and so the Jolie Seven are together again for the quarantine. Which explains why Angelina agreed to speak to a South Korean reporter at DongA Daily about coronavirus, quarantines, Maddox?s studies and lots more. Some highlights:
On Maddox choosing Yonsei University: ?I could not be happier about Mad?s choice of university. It is, of course, closed at the moment because of the pandemic. But he?s not transferring school, he?ll be back as soon as things settle. We are all so happy, as a family, that we will have the opportunity to get to know South Korea even better through Maddox, and with him, during his studies.?
She?s homeschooling her kids, but she?s worried about access to education for kids around the world: ?Being suddenly out of school and cut off from friends is hard for anyone, but in some countries, if a young person?s education is interrupted in this way, they may never be able to go back, because they have to go to work or face other pressures. So there?s an urgent need to help young people to continue their education, through distance learning for example, to ensure they are able to get their qualifications and that they get the other kinds of support they need. This is my major focus, and something that I?m working on with UNESCO and a Global Education Coalition.?
She hopes governments care about refugees even in the pandemic: ?The most important thing to understand is that even before the virus, the situation for refugees globally was dire, with chronic shortfalls in basic humanitarian assistance including, for instance, a lack of basic healthcare. So while of course it is right that governments are moving quickly to protect their own citizens, it is urgent that we help more vulnerable societies and communities that could be devastated by this disease.?
She?s providing more content for the BBC show My World, which she executive-produces, and she released this statement about it: ?Children have not been out of school on this scale since the Second World War. This is something that throughout their lifetimes, they will remember. It is something that older generations, for all their other reference points, have not experienced. The way children go through this time ? from the tools and information they can access to the ways they can communicate to and help each other ? will be unique to their generation. We want to help kids to have access to trusted content and tools that will be useful to them during the pandemic: including helping them to seek out fact-based and reliable news, question the information they receive, and learn from each other?s experiences.?

Quarantine kids are like ?yay no school, I?m going play outside? and Angelina is the mom who is like ?there are kids quarantined in Pakistan who would love to have your access to remote learning tools. Those kids would love access to education past the ninth grade.? And that sh-t works too, at least it did on me when I was a kid. Anyway, of course I believe her, Maddox will go back to South Korea, probably in the fall, one would hope.

Maddox Jolie-Pitt apparently returned home to LA last week, after his South Korean university suspended classes for the coronavirus pandemic. Angelina now has all six kids back at home with her during a pandemic. I wouldn?t imagine that their daily LA life is all that different they were already an insular group, but I bet the kids miss hanging out with friends and having playdates and such. So how are the Jolie Seven managing their time during the quarantine?
The Jolie-Pitt kids are back together. In the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolies children Maddox, 18, Pax, 16, Zahara, 15, Shiloh, 13, and 11-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne have been social distancing together.
All the kids are home with Angelina but they have continued seeing Brad and go over for their regular visits, a source close to the family tells E! News. On March 20, Yonsei University, the college where the couples oldest son Maddox has been studying, announced that it will be extending online classes until mid-April due to coronavirus concerns. Like the college freshman, his younger siblings are also continuing their schooling and extracurriculars online.
They are keeping up with their schoolwork, practicing their languages, playing instruments, board games and helping cook dinner, the insider shares, later noting, It hasnt been too much of an adjustment since they are used to doing their schoolwork at home.
The source also added that Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne love spending time with their parents and getting to be home. They are having a lot of family time and just hanging out together watching movies.

I bet the kids are helping out in the kitchen, because Angelina is not much of a cook. I think Pax loves to cook or bake or something? I would guess that a few of the Jolie-Pitt kids have learned how to make simple dishes like spaghetti or mac ?n cheese. As for the kids still seeing Brad? there haven?t been any paparazzi photos of Brad out and about since early March, so I would assume he?s social distancing too. Maybe he?s still sculpting or something. The Daily Mirror claimed that Angelina was ?keeping the kids away from Brad? during the quarantine, but I doubt (??) the quarantine affects visitation, right? It?s probably the same as it was two months ago, which is that the younger kids see Brad and the older kids opt out.

The coronavirus originated in China, as far as anyone knows. It quickly spread to surrounding Asian countries, because that?s the nature of this highly contagious virus. The first confirmed cases in South Korea happened in February, but the virus had already been on Korea?s radar for a full month, and they had already prepared testing protocols and they were prepared to order quarantines. While South Korea?s outbreak has been bad 9000 confirmed cases their testing, quarantine and isolation efforts have been a model for the rest of Asia, and they have successfully flattened the curve.
I was thinking about all of this in relation to Maddox Jolie-Pitt, who enrolled in a South Korean university last year. Angelina Jolie dropped him off at the university last fall, and by most accounts, Maddox was enjoying his freshman year. But with South Korea in a virtual lockdown, his classes were first suspended and then like so many schools around the world everything closed down. His uni is closed for the school year. And I guess Korea has flattened the curve to the point where they?re letting people travel again, so Maddox is apparently home in LA.
Angelina Jolie received an early homecoming from her oldest son! The actress? son, Maddox, returned home early from his studies at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea after his semester was canceled due to the novel coronavirus, PEOPLE confirms.
The 18-year-old college student is using the downtime to focus on his Korean and Russian studies while he stays at home with his mother and five younger siblings: Pax, 16; Zahara, 15; Shiloh, 13; and twins Knox and Vivienne, 11.
Jolie is also aiming to help other kids in need. The Oscar-winner donated $1 million to No Kid Hungry, an organization distributing meals to children who relied on school lunches.
?As of this week, over a billion children are out of school worldwide because of closures linked to coronavirus,? Jolie said in a statement. ?Many children depend on the care and nutrition they receive during school hours, including nearly 22 million children in America who rely on food support. No Kid Hungry is making resolute efforts to reach as many of those children as possible.?

To all of the parents out there who now have boomerang college kids at home: are you happy about it or annoyed? Personally, I hope there are more college kids going home to their parents rather than not taking any of this seriously and, like, using the quarantine to go party and have extended spring breaks. Maddox doesn?t seem like that type. I bet he?s happy to see his brothers and sisters and he?s listening to his mom about isolating.

I felt attacked yesterday when I expressed my confusion about whether I should overreact or underreact to the coronavirus pandemic if I?m feeling okay. I went to the gym yesterday, and I picked up some more supplies at a grocery store. I?m prepared to socially distance and all of that, but the scenes are surreal and the shaming is real! It doesn?t help matters that when I am out, I see tons of people everywhere. Not as many people as usual, but still I get that ?people on the internet? are taking quarantining and social distancing and self-isolating seriously. But are other people?
So I don?t know what to think about Angelina Jolie doing some last-minute grocery shopping with her daughter Vivienne. They went to Whole Foods yesterday and came out with two big paper bags full of supplies. There are five kids at home with Angelina now, with Maddox in college in South Korea. If the Jolie-Pitt clan tries to self-isolate in LA, they?re going to need more supplies than that. Also: Angelina, by her own admission, can?t cook. My girl can?t boil an egg. Maybe they?re just getting Uber Eats or food deliveries?
Also: Angelina?s commitment to sack-dressing is really something. I?m actually pleased that she?s not wearing a black sack dress at the moment. It?s spring, so she went with a summery sack. The dress looks like a costume from Midsommer. And I friggin? love her sunglasses. Little Vivi doesn?t want to be photographed though. Paparazzi in the time of corona.

For International Women?s Day, Angelina Jolie contributed another column to Time Magazine, where she has a contributing-editor gig. I think she does one or two columns a month? Something like that. Jolie?s column, as we discussed yesterday, was about how girls inherently nurture people, and how that nurturing is taken for granted and abused. Angelina discussed this in the context of seeing two of her daughters go through surgery. She didn?t name which daughters had what done, but we surmised that Zahara had surgery and was in the hospital for a while and that Vivienne or Shiloh was also recently hospitalized with a hip issue? The wording was confusing, but we got a clarification: Vivienne is fine and she was not hospitalized, although Viv did spend a lot of time with her sisters while they were hospitalized. Shiloh is currently on crutches for some kind of issue. Considering her wild tomboy vibe, my guess is still skateboarding accident, or maybe a dune buggy crash? People Magazine spoke to a ?source? who confirmed that Angelina has been spending so much time over the past two months at the hospital with her girls:
While the Maleficent actress referred directly to 15-year-old Zahara, she didn?t specify which of her two younger daughters underwent hip surgery. However, PEOPLE has confirmed that, Shiloh, 13, was photographed walking on crutches over the weekend while out shopping with her mom and sister, Vivienne, 11. Zahara was also seen stepping out after her surgeries, attending Cirque du Soleil with her family, where she was seen wearing an IV drip.
A source from the hospital tells PEOPLE that Jolie has been by her kids? side for the past two months as they were in and out of the hospital.
?She?s been in her pajamas, in the pediatric ward, by their side,? the source says.
Another source tells PEOPLE that the girls are now on the mend. ?They look to be recovering,? the insider says.

This actually answers some questions I had about Angelina?s utter non-engagement with Brad Pitt?s nonsense during the awards season. He was so clearly looking to get a reaction from Jolie, almost like he couldn?t help but bait her. And she didn?t take the bait she did not issue any statements, nor did any ?sources close to Angelina? speak to People Magazine during his campaign. As it turns out, we also solved another mystery: the mystery of why Brad skipped the BAFTAs. He was apparently spending time with either Zahara or Shiloh. He made sure to leak that to Page Six:
Brad Pitt missed the BAFTAs to be by his daughter?s side as she recovered from an operation, multiple sources confirm to Page Six. In February, the star canceled his trip to London at the last minute ? and sent co-star Margot Robbie in his place to pick up his gong for his role in Quentin Tarantino?s ?Once Upon a Time in ? Hollywood.?
He cited a ?family obligation? at the time, as a source close to the actor told us: ?The children come before anything.?
As ex-wife Angelina Jolie revealed that two of their daughters have recently undergone surgery, a friend of the family confirmed that Pitt ? who dedicated his Oscar win to his six kids ? stayed home in LA to support his daughters. However, the friend admitted that Pitt had never spoken publicly about his kids ? and never will ? as Jolie spoke out.

Can Brad Pitt really claim any kind of moral high ground on ?never? speaking about his kids when he clearly sent his publicist to Page Six to confirm that he was, in fact, spending time with his kids? And historically, Brad has talked about his children, clutch your pearls! He used to talk about them all the time in interviews, before he did something to Maddox on the plane in 2016. Then he spent years only seeing his kids occasionally with a court-ordered monitor present, and his oldest sons want nothing to do with him. But, you know, the moral high ground! He never talks about his kids! Unless he?s dedicating an Oscar to them, or trying to ?hit? Angelina for? writing an essay for Time Magazine about International Women?s Day.

Is Angelina Jolie still in England filming The Eternals? I know she was there last fall and into winter, and I have no idea how intensive the film shoot is or what kind of stunt work she needed to do. I ask because I have no idea where Angelina and her kids are at the moment. Either LA or London, you choose. Wherever they are, Angelina is camped out at the hospital because two of her daughters needed surgery. She wrote an essay for Time Magazine (she?s been a contributor for months now) in honor of International Women?s Day, and the point of her essay was not to spill some tea about her kids, but to note how odd it is that girls are expected to take care of each other. That?s the expectation.
I have spent the last two months in and out of surgeries with my eldest daughter, and days ago watched her younger sister go under the knife for a hip surgery. They know that I am writing this, because I respect their privacy and we discussed it together and they encouraged me to write. They understand that going through medical challenges and fighting to survive and heal is something to be proud of.
I have watched my daughters care for one another. My youngest daughter studied the nurses with her sister, and then assisted the next time. I saw how all my girls so easily stopped everything and put each other first, and felt the joy of being of service to those they love. I also watched them their face fears with a resolute bravery. We all know that moment when no one else can help us, and all we can do is close our eyes and breathe. When only we can take the next step or breath through the pain, so we steady ourselves and do it.
Their brothers were there for them, supportive and sweet. But on this International Women?s Day, writing from the hospital, I find myself focusing on my daughters for a moment, and all that I have learned from them and other young girls I have met around the world.
Someone said to me, when they saw my daughters caring for each other, that ?it comes naturally to girls.? I smiled, but then I thought of how often that notion is abused. The little girl is expected to take care of others. The woman she grows up to be will be expected to give, and care for, and sacrifice. Girls are often conditioned to think that they are good only when they serve others, and selfish or wrong if ever they focus on their own needs and desires.
Little girls? softness, their openness and instinct to nurture and help others, must be appreciated and not abused. We must do much more to protect them, in all societies: not only against the extreme ways girls? rights are often violated, but also the more subtle injustices and attitudes that so often go unnoticed or excused.
So my wish on this day is that we value girls. Care for them. And know that the stronger they grow, the healthier they will be and the more they will give back to their family and community. And my message to girls is, fight on, little ladies. Your care for each other will be a large part of your way forward. Hold your nerve. Know your rights. And never let anyone tell you that you are not precious and special and, above all, equal.

I agree with her sentiment about gender norms and how everyone expects women and girls to ?nurture? and be caretakers (physically and emotionally). But yeah, I?m also interested in whatever is happening with her daughters? So, Zahara is the oldest girl and she?s been having multiple surgeries? And Vivienne is the youngest, and she had hip surgery? Lord, are these girls crazy-athletic or something? If you told me that Shiloh needed surgery for some broken bones from skateboarding, I would say ?yep, makes perfect sense.? But Zahara and Viv? What?s happening??

My aunt passed away a few years ago, but before she died, she was the kind of person who believed every single thing she heard on conservative radio, and she regularly regurgitated Fox News talking points almost verbatim. It was? difficult. Even when I tried to fact-check in real time when she was mid-rant about Obummer getting secret money from Ghaddafi (or something?), it was like her brain stopped, crashed, then rebooted and she just kept believing the same thing Fox News told her. My point is that there are a lot of people who could use a primer in how to read and watch and listen to ?news.? Angelina Jolie is just focusing on teaching those lessons to kids:
Angelina Jolie and the BBC want to give young viewers real tools to stop fake news, Jolie will executive produce ?BBC My World,? a program that explains the stories behind news and offers facts and information that helps kids over the age of 13 make up their own minds on pressing international issues. The series will tap the reporting of the BBC World Service and is a co-production with Jolie and Microsoft Education. The BBC will retain final editorial approval of content in the series.
?As a parent I am happy to be able to give my support to a program that aims to help children learn more about the lives of other young people around the world, and connect to them to each other,? says Jolie in a prepared statement. ?I hope it will help children find the information and tools they need to make a difference on the issues that matter to them, drawing on the BBC World Service?s network of thousands of journalists and multiple language services around the world.?
The weekly half-hour program will be broadcast via BBC World News, the organization?s most-watched channel. It will air each Sunday at 11:30 a.m. eastern, and its content will be shared with BBC?s 42 different language services. It will also be made available via a YouTube channel and the BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom. Producers see the show as a tool to help young audiences, who are allowed to roam on many social-media outlets, but come across all kinds of news content aimed at adults, yet have less of a grasp about how to distinguish content by levels of quality.

In my day yes, I?m old this was considered more of a lesson in government/civics starting in middle school and continuing through high school. There wasn?t one singular class on media-engagement and, like, media criticism or media ethics, but it was seen as more adjacent to discussions about history and politics and citizenship. But I like the idea of a stand-alone program, a tool for kids to get a better grasp of news and fake news and all of that. And yes, there should be something like that for adults too, because the old folks watching Fox News are not okay.

Before Christmas, there were several stories in various outlets about how Brad Pitt was going to spend his birthday and Christmas with three of his six children. Zahara is now 14 years old, and so it seems like she?s old enough to decide her custody/visitation for herself. And Zahara has opted out of spending time with Brad Pitt, just like Maddox and Pax have opted out. Now Brad only gets to see the three youngest Jolie-Pitt kids, Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox. My guess is that even though Angelina has been filming The Eternals in England for several months, she still had to come ?home? to LA so that she could fulfill the visitation requirements and all of that. And maybe she wanted to spend Christmas in LA. But she definitely didn?t want to spend New Year?s Eve in LA. Days after Christmas, Angelina took her four youngest kids to Ethiopia. I guess Brad didn?t get to see them after Christmas huh? Incidentally, there are some exclusive pics of Brad leaving Puerto Vallarta (a vacation spot in Mexico) on NYE, so it looks like he jetted out of LA after Christmas too. As for Angelina?s Ethiopia trip, she and Shiloh and Zahara met Ethiopia?s president:
Angelina Jolie is returning to a place close to her heart. The actress, 44, visited Ethiopia with four of her kids ? Shiloh, 13, and Zahara, 14, who was born in the African country, as well as 11-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. The family will stay in the region for New Year?s Eve.
While there, Jolie brought Shiloh and Zahara to meet with Sahle-Work Zewde, the president of Ethiopia and the first woman to hold the office. It was a special treat for Zahara, who turns 15 on Jan. 8. Their talks covered education, sanitary pad solutions to help girls continue their schooling (girls often stay home from class while menstruating due to lack of supplies), and Ethiopian culture and history. The group also discussed Jolie?s ongoing efforts to treat drug-resistant tuberculosis.
The actress and activist has funded efforts for over a decade through the Zahara Program, named after her daughter. The Jolie Pitt Foundation partnered with the Global Health Committee and the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health in 2009 to create an initiative to treat drug-resistant TB. Their work has led to continuing success in treating people with TB in the region.

That?s cool that she brought the younger kids to Ethiopia and that Shiloh and Zahara got to meet the president. As you can see in the photos below, Zahara seemed to get dressed up in an appropriate ensemble, while? Shiloh wore jeans and a windbreaker? I?m all for Let Shiloh Be Shiloh, but no Angelina should have asked Shiloh to put on a better outfit. Shi looks like she?s about to hang out at the skate park. That?s my only complaint! The rest of this is very cool.
