Angelina Jolie finally did a Vanity Fair ?Awards Insider? interview. Every awards-season hopeful does these but she had been avoiding it for some reason. She ended up calling in from Paris, where she?s working on Alice Winocour?s film Stitches. She spoke about working on a French film, and she spoke a lot about Maria Callas and what this journey has been like, promoting Maria for months. VF also got her to talk about the 25th anniversary of Girl, Interrupted too. As a special treat. Some highlights:
Most of her dialogue in ?Stitches? is in French. ?I?m not fluent?I speak a bit, but?to mean every word and give a performance takes a different kind of understanding about what it is I?m saying, to be emotional and not think about the language. It?s a different challenge.?
Why ?Maria? felt like a homecoming for her as an actress & artist: ?I wasn?t myself for a while, so I wasn?t able to give as much to my work for a few years. To feel like I could work again and communicate and to be with nice people?so much of what I do is collaboration with other artists. When it goes well, you?re creating together. When you?re with nice people and creative people, you learn so much about yourself and about life. You?re in a safe place to play and stretch.?
It feels meaningful to be doing this kind of work again: ?It really does. Probably more than I can even express. If no one receives your piece, or if you don?t connect, then it?s like shouting in the dark. It means a lot that people have responded to Maria. I?ve always felt, ever since I was very young, that film has been a way to communicate with the world and not feel as alone. We?re all going through this human condition and this life. So it?s very, very healing to be able to be a part of these films and to talk to you about this and to live that way. And I missed it. I realized I did really miss it. I missed being an artist.
Going dark: ?I went very dark for reasons I?d rather not explain, but I didn?t have a lot of light and life within me. Your light?s dim. I also just needed to be home more, so I couldn?t commit large periods of time to pieces. The choice of what to work on and when was not a creative choice, often, the last few years, but sometimes the practical choice. Really, I think Maria was the beginning of starting to come alive again. I needed a lot of kind people around me to hold my hand. I know I say it too often, but our business can be a lot of things. At the end of the day, we?re very fortunate to do what we do, and we are spending a lot of time with big, deep, emotional feelings. If you don?t do that with people who you?re safe with, it can affect you in very bad ways.
Shooting ?Maria? was a heavy experience: ?It was heavy. Maria was a very full experience. I wasn?t able to leave her on set like you sometimes do. Part of that was because I was always doing training after [shooting] anyway; there was always a next aria. But it was all leading towards the death, and the death was the last thing we shot. I?m almost 50, and my mom had cancer when she was 48. You?re actually thinking about death, about things that cause you grief or that you have lost in your life.
25 years since Girl, Interrupted: ?I remember that I didn?t think of [Lisa] as crazy and that she was a real person. She needed to be loved, and she felt alone, and she wanted truth. I only saw it once?it?s hard for me to talk about it because I saw it once 25 years ago?but from my memory, she wanted someone to be honest with her and to connect, and somehow ended up feeling very, very alone in that way?not dissimilar to Maria. Not finding somebody who understood her enough, not finding a way forward where she was okay. Is this a theme? That I?m alone? What is this? [Laughs] There?s probably some very tragic thing that I don?t want to address right now, but?yeah.

Angelina Jolie covers the LA Times? Envelope Magazine (their in-house entertainment mag), all to promote Pablo Larrain?s Maria. The Maria team was included in the profile, and they adore Jolie and she loves them right back. There?s not a lot of new information here Jolie has given herself talking points and she?s been good at adhering to them but I just love how much she?s been hustling this fall and winter. She?s already gotten a Critics Choice and Golden Globe nomination, and she?s picked up several special recognition awards at the Gotham Awards and various film festivals. Some highlights:
Whether she harbors any desires to perform opera on stage: ?My God,? she answers, as if she?d been asked to sample a cup of sour milk. ?That would be my nightmare. That would be terrifying.?
Her kinship with Maria Callas: ?We?re both very emotional women who probably are seen as quite strong but are quite vulnerable, emotional artists who are alone a lot.?
A big swing: ?I admire people that take a big swing, even if they fall. When I see people who are careful ? too careful ? I?m more uncomfortable for them.? But ?if I see somebody being emotionally brave or creatively brave, I root for them. I don?t judge them.?
Callas? line, ?I took liberties all my life, and the world took liberties with me.? Did the actor, herself a constant target of media scrutiny and speculation, feel any connection to Callas in that way? Jolie simply turns the question back at me: ?I think journalists of the world watch this film a little differently. When they see the film, they?re very conscious of maybe how their work affected both of us.?
Jolie does not share Callas? professional angst as an aging woman: ?My motherhood is the only thing that I couldn?t live without. Truly, you could take everything else. I?d be fine.?
She loves telling stories with ?slightly broken? and ?sensitive? people. ?I?ve been one my whole life. Sensitive people feel a lot, and they worry a lot. They also create a lot, and they connect in beautiful ways. One of the most beautiful things about being on a film set is you?re with hundreds of others. You?ve all found each other. You?re all sensitive, you?re all creative, and you?re all a little ? you know, unusual. And not necessarily the most stable.?

Honestly, Angelina?s instability used to be front and center back in the day, and then motherhood changed her and she became a grown-up. But she still has that sensitive-artist side to her which is ?unusual? and ?not necessarily the most stable.? This feels like a comeback for her in that regard, even though she?s had acting roles in the past decade. This is a comeback for Angelina really pouring herself into a character and playing a role which she relates to so much.

A few weeks ago, Angelina Jolie was spotted at the Met, attending a performance of Puccini?s Tosca with Pablo Larrain. It came during one of several trips she?s made to New York in recent months, almost all of which have been to promote Larrain?s Maria, where Jolie plays Maria Callas. What we didn?t know last month was that a New York Times reporter was along for the ride at the opera, and that it was all for a rather lovely piece about Jolie and about opera. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:
Jolie identified with Callas?s isolation. ?Loneliness is not a bad thing. We?re both seen as strong, but actually we?re very vulnerable and human. I don?t think either one of us is necessarily comfortable being public.?
Jolie was worried about her singing voice: For years, she had carried the trauma of a boyfriend telling her she had a bad voice and that she should be grateful she had other talents. ?It was nasty, and it was more than once. Then I stopped singing.? She told Larran that she had ?a lot of emotion and pain that I did not feel like letting go.? She was not very familiar with classical music; she had grown up listening to punk bands like the Clash. And she wasn?t sure she had the technique to sing ? until that point, she had avoided even ?Happy Birthday.?
She sang ?Piangete voi?? at La Scala: The aria was one of the most challenging on the list, but it was also Jolie?s favorite. Dressed in a costume that matched Callas?s, with a white headpiece and navy dress, she sang before a crowd of about 500 people. ?It?s like jumping off a cliff. There was just nothing I could do but try to give everything I had.?
Her mother?s death: Her mother?s death from cancer in 2007, at 56, made Jolie feel she no longer had the luxury of time. ?I don?t want to be comfortable or too relaxed,? she said. ?I want to live fully.?
She?s concerned about revealing too many truths. ?When you are stripped of so many things that make you feel safe and whole, you really sit with what matters to you and what you want to give every breath in your body for. In the end, I found a lot of softness.? She said she hoped that despite all that, Callas was able to ?feel safe to be soft and hopefully eventually rediscover a level of joy.?
Has Jolie found joy again? ?I don?t know about that. But I hope for it. I hope to find a lightness that I may have lost along the way.?

There?s a lot in the Times piece about how Jolie has a rare, genuine elusiveness and not even Pablo Larrain really knows her and they worked together for months. When Jolie walked into the Met, apparently people gasped and began murmuring and trying to take her photo too. The Met let Jolie linger after Tosca she and Pablo met several people working on the opera, and they let Jolie go on stage and examine the set. It?s actually a really lovely portrait, and Jolie?s unwillingness to talk about her personal life just made it even more interesting. I mean, she?s been doing this for a while, she knows how to talk around her eight-year-plus divorce. ?When you are stripped of so many things that make you feel safe and whole? fk Brad Pitt. She?s spent eight years just trying to feel safe and whole again.

You know how hard Angelina Jolie is hustling for Maria? She appeared on a late-night talk show for the first time in a decade! Jolie went on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, and she could not have been more nervous. I think her last talk-show appearance was probably The Daily Show in, like, 2013? Jimmy Fallon was really gentle with her last night and he made a point of not even saying Brad Pitt?s name or asking her anything about divorce or exes or any of that. She did talk a little bit about her kids, but emphasized that Shiloh is the one kid who really craves privacy. Here?s the

Here are some photos from the Gotham Awards, which were held last night in New York. This was one of the first awards shows of the season, and judging from the A-listers who came out, it seems like there?s going to be a lot of eagerness this year, a lot of people vying for footholds in the Oscar race. I?m including photos of Angelina Jolie and an LV-clad Zendaya, both of whom received special awards for their performances in Maria and Challengers respectively. Other nominees and attendees included: Nicole Kidman, Adrien Brody (with Georgina Chapman), Jessica Chastain, Elle Fanning, Colman Domingo (who won Best Actor for Sing Sing), Pamela Anderson, a Schiaparelli-clad Saoirse Ronan, and Zoe Kravitz.
The Gotham Awards went for gender-neutral categories, and like every awards show which experiments with gender-neutral categories, the cisgender men took home all of the awards. I don?t know what the answer is to ?should gender-neutral categories be the norm,? but in practice, in the real world, whenever they run that experiment, the men always win. It sucks. Anora was supposed to pick up some major awards, but they left empty-handed. A Different Man won best feature, beating out Anora, Babygirl, Challengers and Nickel Boys. Nickel Boys won breakthrough performer (Brandon Wilson) and best director. Sing Sing won two acting awards, for Colman Domingo and Clarence Maclin.

A few weeks ago, Brad Pitt scored a minor ?victory? in his years-long battle with Angelina Jolie. Jolie sold her half of Chateau Miraval a company called Nouvel to Tenute del Mondo in 2022. Brad sued her over the sale, and Angelina countersued him. Angelina has been consistently racking up victories in the pre-trial hearings and legal filings, because Brad?s lawsuit is based on ?we had a secret, unwritten agreement that she was only going to sell Nouvel to me!? Brad?s victory, a few weeks ago, was that the judge dismissed three of Angelina?s demurrers and the lawsuit is still headed for trial eventually. As Angelina?s lawyer said at the time, this just means that the judge said that Brad has to prove his case in court now. Well, now Angelina has scored a victory in the pre-trial motions. A judge is now ordering Brad to disclose all of his communications with his crisis managers and publicists regarding Brad?s abuse of Angelina and the kids, and the subsequent years-long cover-up.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitts winery battle continues with a move that could delve deeper into claims that Pitt was abusive. In a decision made Monday, Nov. 25, a judge ruled that Pitt, 60, must disclose documents that Paul Murphy, a lawyer for Jolie, 49, says will prove communications concerning abuse, lies to authorities, and years of cover up on Pitts part.
These include emails, texts and other written communications, but nothing between him and his attorneys or therapists.
Pitts legal team previously sought for her motion to be denied, calling the actress requests wide-ranging and intrusive, as well as a sensationalist fishing expedition.
Murphy claims the documentation theyre seeking to bring to light is crucial evidence that Pitt has fought for years to hide. He adds in a statement Nov. 26, His actions harmed Angelina and their children and are central to this case.
But I want to again emphasize that Angelina never wanted any of this, continued Murphy. She never pressed charges, she left all their properties, and she is the one who tried to sell him the business in the first place. To this day, Mr. Pitt has never been held accountable for his actions and has at all times controlled Miraval and the winery, yet he still demands more. She wants this to end, the children want this to end, and Mr. Pitt should focus on healing their family, not pursuing lawsuits.
If he does not, the lawyer added, Angelina will defend herself in court by presenting the evidence necessary to demonstrate that Pitt?s allegations are demonstrably false.

Paul Murphy also told Us Weekly: ?We are gratified that the court ruled in Angelina?s favor. After Mr. Pitt fought for years to hide this crucial evidence, he must now produce documents and communications concerning abuse, lies to authorities, and years of cover-up. His actions harmed Angelina and their children and are central to this case.? I still remember, right after the 2016 plane incident, Angelina immediately filed for divorce and took the kids away to protect them. At the same time, Brad was hiring crisis managers and publicists to begin what would be a years-long smear campaign against Angelina. She was always a battered woman protecting herself and her children, and now her lawyers are going to get all of Brad?s emails and texts showing the extent of it.

I love a v-neck sweater. So cozy, so sexy, so versatile. Angelina Jolie wore a black v-neck sweater and a dark grey pencil skirt in Torino, Italy today. She arrived at the Torino Film Festival and was promptly handed an award the Stella della Mole prize, a sort of lifetime achievement for her acting career. One of the big reasons why Angelina Jolie?s longtime fans are so excited about Pablo Larrain?s Maria is because we hope that this will mark Angelina?s return to acting consistently. She had a lengthy ?wilderness? period where she was focused on her family and doing smaller projects close to home. But even before Angelina left Brad Pitt, she had already spent years avoiding acting gigs like the plague. There was a hope that working with Pablo Larrain somehow made Angelina realize that she could have a lot of fun if she simply took more acting work. Well, it?s all happening. Angelina has signed on to another film, set in Paris. More specifically, set at Paris Fashion Week. Angelina will be working with acclaimed French director Alice Winocour.
Following her critically acclaimed turn as legendary opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larran?s ?Maria,? Angelina Jolie will return to Paris to star in Alice Winocour?s first English language directorial effort. The movie, titled ?Stitches? (?Coutures?), is set in the world of high fashion and unfolds in Paris. Jolie stars in the movie as a filmmaker and is one of three women whose lives will collide during Fashion Week.
Filming is expected to begin at the start of next year with Charles Gillibert?s Paris-based banner CG Cinema producing in partnership with Zhang Xin and William Horberg of Closer Media.
?Stitches? also reteams Winocour with French production-distribution powerhouse Path Films following her well-received movie ?Paris Memories,? which world premiered at Cannes? Directors Fortnight and earned its star Virginie Efira a Cesar Award (France?s equivalent to the Oscar) for her performance as a survivor of a brutal terrorist attack. Path Films will distribute ?Stitches? in France. UTA Independent Film Group structured the financing for the film and is representing global and North American rights. Hanway Films is handling international sales.
The film will shoot in both French and English, in line with Winocour?s previous movie ?Proxima.? The latter starred Eva Green as an astronaut preparing for a year-long stint on the International Space Station, coping with the guilt of leaving her young daughter and navigating a male-dominated environment. Green was nominated for Cesar Award for this role and the movie won the platform prize at Toronto, as well as the jury award at San Sebastian.

Angelina does speak French at some capacity but I?m not sure if she?s fluent enough to pull off a role which is half in French? But you never know, maybe she?s more fluent than we know, or maybe the character mostly speaks English. While this sounds like a fantastic French art-house kind of film and I love that for Angelina, truly I do hope she?s also getting scripts from the Hollywood studios? I?m slightly worried about her financially, because Brad Pitt is going to keep financially abusing her for years longer. Mama needs to pick up some big paychecks.

Angelina Jolie was out in LA this week, attending yet another screening/premiere for Pablo Larrain?s Maria at the Writers Guild Theater. The paparazzi swarm was so intense, Jolie looked like she barely got into the theater, and she was traveling with her bodyguards too. As you can see in these photos, Angelina wore a bronze-y Armani dress and a black double-breasted coat. Meanwhile, Maria hasn?t even had a theatrical release and Angelina keeps picking up special-recognition awards. It?s the perfect storm for her one of the last movie stars of that generation, in a comeback role which is getting widespread acclaim. She?s already been honored at the Toronto Film Festival, and the Santa Barbara Film Festival announced plans to give her an award in the new year. Now the Gotham Awards are giving her something special:

The event will take place Dec. 2 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. The Gotham Film & Media Institute said the Oscar winner will be honored for performance as the legendary, but troubled, opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larrain?s upcoming film Maria.
?Like the legendary figure she portrays, Angelina Jolie transcends mere performance to craft something extraordinary. Her interpretation captures both Maria Callas? complexity as an artist and the cultural resonance that defines an icon,? The Gotham executive director Jeffrey Sharp said in a statement.

I love it, honestly. Every other year, I?m like ?there are too many awards shows, the awards are less special, it?s too much noise.? But this year, I?m like: give Angelina all of the awards, please. I know that this is Gotham?s way of confirming Angelina?s attendance, ditto for Santa Barbara and Toronto. But it?s still nice! Chances are, the big ?win? will be if Angelina gets an Oscar nomination, not the Best Actress Oscar itself. So I?m fine with her racking up the special awards at festivals and critics? award shows.
What else? Angelina was asked if she would ever consider doing a Broadway musical now that she?s sung opera in a movie. She replied: ?I would love to, but I?d be very shy. But if you asked me if I would be singing opera a year ago, I probably would have said no. I started with Strasberg and I started in theater so of course I would love to. But deep deep down, I probably don?t think I?m good enough.? I don?t think she should do a stage musical, but I absolutely think she could do a play on Broadway. I still believe we?ll see her move full-time to New York when Vivienne and Knox go to college. Speaking of, Jolie was also asked if her kids will follow her into acting, and she said: ?No, I think theyre especially shy, very private people?and they want to be private.

This diva!! Angelina Jolie stepped out on Saturday night at the AFI Fest premiere of Maria. Jolie heard all of you begging Nicole Kidman to bring back her curly hair and Jolie said ?I?m going to hit ?em up with some vintage Kidman.? The curly hair looks amazing on her I have no idea if Angelina has naturally curly or wavy hair but I don?t think she does? Meaning, she had to put her curlers in or something. She looks younger with curly hair as well. And ever since she got that Tom Ford Beauty contract, she?s been wearing the fk out of the red lipstick.
I don?t have much to say about Angelina?s fashion though. I mean? she?s not a fashionista, which is funny because she founded an atelier. She wore a beige silk dress which is too neutral, and she threw a sack-like shawled jacket over it. I get it the look is all about her face, but I wish she was making different style choices for this promotional tour.
Netflix released the full-length trailer for Maria a few days ago, so I?m including it again below. I have such high hopes for this movie! I?m also including an interview Jolie did at AFI Fest.
