| Zoe Saldana on the 'Nina' debacle: 'There's no one way to be black' | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Zoe Saldana covers the new issue of Allure. Most of the interview is about her feminism, her babies, her difficult birthing experience, and how Hollywood mothers rallied around her and the power of the sisterhood. But what will get the most attention, I?m sure, is the part where she discusses Nina, the Nina Simone bio-pic that was widely criticized several months ago. While the film received a lot of criticism, Zoe was widely slammed for taking the role, for agreeing to ?blackface? and for associating herself with this terrible project whatsoever. So, months have passed and Zoe has had time to think about how she wants to position herself and what she wants to say. Some highlights from Allure:
Changing dirty diapers: “Everybody told me, ‘Oh, don’t worry, I know you hate changing diapers, but when you have your own kid…. Well, guess what? I had my own kids, and I will do whatever I need to do to not change a dirty diaper. A blowout? I can’t do it?I end up with sh-t everywhere! There is sh-t on the boy; there is sh-t on me; there is sh-t in my hair. And I’m like, How did this happen?”
Her emergency C-section: “The boys came at 32 weeks. They found protein in my urine; my platelets crashed. I didn’t qualify for an epidural, so I delivered under general anesthetic. I didn’t even meet them until a day later. Looking back, I think the boys were three or four months old, and one morning I woke up with just this flood of emotions. Marco had them, too, and we were able to have our deconstruction session in the bathroom while they were napping, to say to each other, ‘Holy sh-t, did we come close to it all changing forever?’ We allowed ourselves to have a moment of ‘poor us.’ And that was it. Then somebody cried, and it was ‘Got to go!’”
She requested that the studio provide babysitters: “The tone changed in the negotiations. I was starting to feel that I was…difficult? [it was] considered a perk, or ‘Give this to me; I’m having a diva fit’? No. This is a necessity that you must cover for me in order for me to go and perform my job? The fact that there are women working in these studios?and they’re the ones [enforcing] these man-made rules. When are we going to learn to stick together?”
On the criticism she got for the Nina debacle: “I have a strong sense of self. I have no problem admitting my errors; just have respect for me. If I am just like wallpaper, there’s no need for me to be here. It’s kind of like that Nina Simone song?you’ve got to learn to leave the table when love isn’t being served?
On the slam from Nina Simone?s estate: ?There’s no one way to be black. I’m black the way I know how to be. You have no idea who I am. I am black. I’m raising black men. Don’t you ever think you can look at me and address me with such disdain.”
The idea that she was ?too pretty? to play Nina Simone: “I never saw her as unattractive. Nina looks like half my family! But if you think the [prosthetic] nose I wore was unattractive, then maybe you need to ask yourself, What do you consider beautiful? Do you consider a thinner nose beautiful, so the wider you get, the more insulted you become?”
She doesn?t regret taking the part: “The script probably would still be lying around, going from office to office, agency to agency, and nobody would have done it. Female stories aren’t relevant enough, especially a black female story. I made a choice. Do I continue passing on the script and hope that the ‘right’ black person will do it, or do I say, ‘You know what? Whatever consequences this may bring about, my casting is nothing in comparison to the fact that this story must be told.’ The fact that we’re talking about her, that Nina Simone is trending? We f–king won. For so many years, nobody knew who the f–k she was. She is essential to our American history. As a woman first, and only then as everything else. Let it be the first movie. If you think you can do it better, then by all means. Let ours be version number one of ten stories in the next ten years about the f–king iconic person that was Nina Simone.”
[From Allure]
I want to give her the benefit of the doubt, I can?t help but think she has LARGELY missed the point about the Nina Simone conversation. No one was saying that Zoe is too pretty to play Nina, we were saying that she didn?t look anything like Nina and it was offensive to see a light-skinned Afro-Latina woman wear blackface and a prosthetic nose to play an icon like Nina. The argument was about colorism not beauty. I also have an issue with this: ?The fact that we’re talking about her, that Nina Simone is trending? We f–king won. For so many years, nobody knew who the f–k she was.? People knew about Nina Simone. Don?t take credit for introducing Nina Simone?s story to the world. You didn?t do that.

| Zoe Saldana in Dolce & Gabbana at the Met Gala: impressive or overdone? | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Last night Kaiser and I were refreshing Twitter to see who wore what to the Met Gala. While E! did have red carpet coverage, and kudos to them for starting that this year, it was more commentary than breaking news and Twitter was usually first. The back of this dress was tweeted early with the celebrity incorrectly identified as Heidi Klum. (The same thing happened with the at-first unknown wearer of that lit-up Zac Posen dress, people said it was Heidi Klum.) Then, when Zoe stepped out in this incredible gown, there was chatter that she was wearing the same dress as Heidi Klum. That didn’t happen and with all the planning that goes into these custom gowns it would not be a coincidence if it did. This was Zoe, rocking this incredible peacock-look dress which had a long train and just beautiful, stunning craftsmanship. I would love to know more about the work which went into this gown. It doesn’t fit the theme of the Met Gala this year but that doesn’t matter at all. Something nitpicky: her makeup is too light for a red carpet look but maybe she didn’t want to overshadow the dress, as if that would even be possible.
Do you remember how Zoe defended Dolce and Gabbana after their stupid “synthetic babies” comments last year? They remembered.
Kate Bosworth was also in Dolce & Gabbana and it’s like they farmed out the design of this hot bedazzled mess to a junior designer. In theory it should be a lovely gown in that there’s so much detail put into it, but there’s not enough editing on the bodice especially. It’s so overwhelmed with rhinestones that it looks like someone hot glued them on with little attention to the pattern. Plus she’s got on some kind of leafy Grecian crown and there’s a giant circle at the waist and embroidered shells leading down the skirt. It’s too much.
Look at this body language.

I shouldn’t stir up trouble, they looked normal-ish in other photos.
Kate Mara was in Paco Rabanne and she was one of the few women to wear a laser-cut dress. That’s one of the examples of the effects of technology on the fashion industry, laser cut patterns. I love the grommets on this dress and the cut is very mod. Kate was there with her Fantastic Four co-star, Jamie Bell, and I forgot that they were dating but we first heard about it last fall. They’re cute together!
Speaking of cute couples, here’s Hannah Davis and her fiance, retiree (ha!) Derek Jeter. She’s in light blue Zuhair Murad and she looks fab. I love the silver belt on that gown and her strappy matching heels.

For months, Zoe Saldana has been lamenting the fact that she hasn’t lost the minor amount of baby weight she was holding onto after having her twin boys, Bowie and Cy, in November, 2014. In April of this year she wrote that the weight gain from pregnancy was “a very challenging experience,” that “bouncing back feels impossible,” and that “it is slow, painful and frustrating. But it is worth it.”
Then, this September she said that “everything hurts and feels uncomfortable” compared to her pre-pregnancy body and that “I feel bad for those women who are desperate and want to bounce back three months after having a baby… I definitely took a break and trusted that my body was going to bounce back when it was ready. I never wanted to push myself.”
Well it’s been a year and Zoe can once again fit back into her Guardians of the Galaxy costume. She posted the following picture to Instagram, along with a bikini pic.
Holy S—! You guys, I had to share this, this is one of the old #guardiansofthegalaxy costumes that I wore back in 2013. After twins I can't believe I was able to slip into this. @marvel and @jamesgunn don't be mad, I'm not showing anything that hasn't been seen before… besides, aren't we designing new stuff?…. It pays off to work hard! I mean it mommies of the world, if I did it you can too.

Eight months ago she gave birth to twins and now Zoe Saldana can?t help but show off her super-fit form, the result of plenty of hard work at the gym.
The ?Avatar? actress posted a photo to Facebook of herself near the weight bench, lifting her shirt to expose her rock-hard abs. She added the caption, ?Almost there! It's been difficult but so rewarding. I feel strong. All it takes is determination! Mommies we can all do it, d*mn it!!!?
Of the pregnancy process, Zoe explained, ?Your body changes dramatically, inside and out. You grow in places you never knew you could, and you are tired beyond belief. In some cases more than others, your body experiences a kind of trauma through childbirth that is difficult to explain unless you've had that experience. My case was like that, everything from my thyroid to my platelets crashed. Thank God, we are all doing great now, but my body was really bent out of shape after the boys were born. Bouncing back feels impossible, but I know it is important as a woman, and now a mommy, to not give up. I am determined to get my energy back and find balance for my body before these little guys start walking, and before I go back to work...my clock is ticking!?

| Zoe Saldana believes that Hollywood should pay for her childcare | Added 9 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

|
Here’s Zoe Saldana at the LA premiere of Infinitely Polar Bear. She wore a one-sleeved, Louis Vuitton throw rug. I think this would have been a passable dress with no sleeves. It’s notable that Zoe took a break from her beloved Dolce & Gabbana.
Zoe has a new interview about juggling parenting and work. From the moment Zoe thanked the media for invading her privacy by noticing her pregnancy, I knew she’d be full of opinions. Zoe has not disappointed. Since giving birth, Zoe’s given her thoughts on “archaic” sleeptraining, “frustrating” body struggles, and how it’s okay to be a self-focused mom. My take is that Zoe thought motherhood would be much less difficult than the reality.
Zoe’s latest crusade involves the high cost of childcare, which is common knowledge for anyone with kids. Zoe thinks we don’t know this already. She told USA Today about how she argued with studios over who should pay for her nannies. This is amazing:
She nearly lost jobs by getting pregnant: “Let me tell you something, it will never be the right time for anybody in your life that you get pregnant. The productions I was slated to work on sort of had a panic. I heard through the grapevine there was even a conversation of me being written off of one of the projects. I was like, ‘Oh, my God, are you kidding me? It’s this bad?’ Right when I just feel super-duper happy, is that inconvenient for you? That me, as a woman in my thirties, I finally am in love and I am finally starting my life? And it’s (screwing) your schedule up? Really?”
Zoe thinks studios should pay for nannies: Studios “spend more money sometimes ‘perking’ up male superstars in a movie [with] a really phat penthouse or them staying in a yacht instead of them staying on land. But then a woman comes in going, ‘OK, I have a child. You’re taking me away from my home. You’re taking my children away from their home. And you’re going to make me work a lot more hours than I usually would if I was home. Therefore, I would have to pay for this nanny for more hours — so I kind of need that. And they go, ‘Nope, we don’t pay for nannies.’”
[From USA Today]
The paper got ahold of Paramount, the studio behind the new Star Trek movies. Paramount wouldn’t talk, so Zoe’s rep clarified: “The issue had been resolved prior to when this interview was conducted.” It sounds like Zoe doesn’t consider the issue resolved. Either the studio refused to pay for nannies (and Zoe’s mentioning it to shame them), or the studio gave in (and she still wants to talk about it).
Zoe does sound a little entitled by insisting employers should pay for her nannies because most women don’t receive any such perk. USA Today did the legwork on employers who do pay for childcare. They quote a study that says only 5% of companies contribute (even just a tiny bit) towards these expenses. Some people think that actresses who make millions shouldn’t complain, but thinking of this in terms of equality changes the argument. If male actors are getting crazy perks too (like penthouses and yachts), nannies aren’t too unreasonable of a request for an actress.

| Zoe Saldana: sleeptraining twins is 'overwhelming, insensitive, & archaic' | Added 9 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

|
|
|
Zoe Saldana is everywhere all of a sudden. More excerpts from her InStyle interview surfaced. She talks about her Nina Simone movie, which she filmed in 2012 and still hasn’t made it into theaters. I guess this is still happening. Zoe said, “I didn?t think I was right for the part, but I don?t think Elizabeth Taylor was right for Cleopatra either. An artist is colorless, genderless .. It?s more complex than just ?Oh, you chose the Halle Berry look-alike to play a dark, strikingly beautiful, iconic black woman.’ The truth is, they chose an artist who was willing to sacrifice herself.” Zoe discussed the Liz Taylor casting before, but she sounds more negative now. Maybe she just wants this film to come out, so she can stop talking about it.
Zoe also visited Jimmy Kimmel last night to talk about her other new movie, Infinitely Polar Bear, which is about a father with bipolar disorder. The dad is played by Mark Ruffalo, so it should be a good performance. Saldana plays Ruffalo’s wife. The topic shifted to parenting, and Zoe admitted how hard is to put her own twin babies to sleep. She and Mr. Marco Saldana are both tearing their lovely manes from their heads:
“Sleep training twins is no joke because you put one to sleep and you lay him down, and the other one has been asleep, but then that one wakes up and the other one wakes up so then everybody’s crying, then my husband and I are crying…You’re like, ‘Oh, my God!’”
“It’s overwhelming because there are so many different methods. Just the other day, my sister, who has a 9-month-old, shared with us the method that she did. She brought the piece of paper and grabbed us both with a bottle of vodka. She goes, ‘What do you guys have?’ That’s how her and her husband did it. Because the moment you hear your child cry, it’s like it rips the guts out of you. And it’s like, we have two. It’s crazy. So there’s a bottle of Skinnygirl and we had the monitor with the volume all the way high. We have this little note thing, this log that you have to be logging in all the time. We put them down, say ‘mommy and daddy love you’ in Italian and Spanish — well get to that later — and then we walk out and they’re having a meltdown. So then you have to time it, then you go in. And my sister, I’m like, ‘Can we go in? Can we go in?’ ‘OK, go in now.’ And we go in and I’m like, ‘What do we do?’ No eye contact, just say ‘mommy and daddy love you’ — in Italian and Spanish?and she would come pull us out. So by the third time, it had been 45 minutes already. We were kind of buzzed. It’s heart wrenching. My husband doesn’t drink and he’s like, ‘Gimme that bottle!’”
“So then we go and we just finally abort. We abort mission. We take our kids. I take one, he takes the other, and we’re both crying. The boys’ bodies are, like, their bodies are weeping…and you go, ‘Oh, my God, he’s never going to forgive me for this.’ And then, Marco and I are talking in the room going, ‘It’s not for us. It’s too archaic. There has to be a more gentle method. They did it because they’re insensitive. They don’t care about their children.’”
[From E! Online]
Kimmel told Zoe she should have the twins sleep in separate bedrooms. Zoe replied, “They were born together. It’s unnatural to separate them. In my mind, it just makes sense.” Well in my mind, this sounds like a nightmare. Two screaming babies! One at a time was enough for me, and I admit to never being able to let my baby cry it out. Perhaps out of laziness, I gave in and picked her up (she’s fine now). Zoe also said her twins would be trilingual (English and Italian and Spanish).
Here’s a Kimmel clip where Zoe talks about Marco taking her name.

| Zoe Saldana defends Marco taking her name & wants to 'redefine masculinity' | Added 9 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Zoe Saldana cannot believe people are making a massive deal out of husband Marco Perego choosing to take her name. She dropped the tidbit in an interview, but she’s still shocked that people noticed or cared. Zoe thinks celebrity culture is “ignorant,” so maybe that’s why she’s aghast. I’m not taken aback by the response to Marco’s name change. Some men take their wives names although it’s the exception. I’m a lot more surprised that some people still think Marco’s a golddigger, so that must be why he dumped his name for a more famous one. Really? Maybe I’ve warmed to Marco too much.
Zoe took to Facebook to question why people reacted to Marco’s marital gesture:
Fathers, sons, brothers, men everywhere: Your legacy will not perish if you take your partner’s surname, or she keeps hers. I?ve been made aware that a comment I made regarding my marriage has garnered some attention. I felt proud that my husband decided to take my last name as his own. I shared my hesitation with him when he told me about his decision, not only did he say, “I don?t give a shhheeeetttt!!” (with a very strong Italian accent!!) he also asked me, “Why not? What are you so afraid of?” And it made me wonder … What am I so afraid of?
Why is it so surprising, shocking- eventful that a man would take his wife’s surname? Women have never been asked if its ok for them to give up their names — why doesn’t that make the news?
Men, you will not cease to exist by taking your partner’s surname. On the contrary — you?ll be remembered as a man who stood by change. I know our sons will respect and admire their father more because their father lead by example.
Gentlemen, I implore you to think outside the box- remove the box altogether. Let?s redefine masculinity. A real “man” leads along side his partner. A real man accepts his mortality. A real man acknowledges that nothing can be done alone.
I hope that the “buzz” behind this topic isn’t just for gossip — but an inspiration for us all to look within and see what is truly important. Let’s start by letting go of some of the limitations we have inherited from the past, and forge a new path moving forward.
Sorry for any mistypes LOL
[From Facebook]
At least Zoe didn’t accuse everyone of invading her privacy again. She knows exactly why Marco’s name change made the news. Because it’s not the norm, and because Zoe made a big deal out of it to the press. She brought the subject up. Zoe discussed her concern for Marco being “emasculated” by his fellow artists and the entire world. Ah well. Zoe just likes to lecture people. I think she means well with this mini-essay, but she sounds really judgy and preachy. Of course she had to throw in a little jab at the gossip realm too.

Zoe Saldana covers the July issue of InStyle. She’s wearing a Dolce & Gabbana dress (that reminds me of Chinese blue and white porcelain) and Dior jewelry. Zoe loves her D&G and stands by them no matter what (even when they say really dumb stuff). She’s not promoting anything right now except for her return to the spotlight. Zoe’s filming Star Trek 3 and has a whole slew of upcoming projects.
InStyle hasn’t released the whole interview yet, but Zoe reportedly had a ball at this shoot because it was her first one in ages. She brought her twin boys, Cy and Bowie, along for the ride. The manicurist described Zoe as someone who’s “silly” and “kept us all laughing with her awesome impressions.” This is surprising because I often feel like Zoe takes herself too seriously. There’s also a very cool excerpt making the rounds. Marco Perego decided to take Zoe’s last name when they got married!
Zoe’s story on Marco taking her name: “I tried to talk him out of it. If you use my name, you’re going to be emasculated by your community of artists, by your Latin community of men, by the world.”
Marco’s response: “Ah Zoe, I don’t give a sh*t.”
[From InStyle]
Marco sounds like an awesome guy. I admit feeling suspicious of him after watching the quickie marriage and checking out his douchey artwork. But the guy has won me over. He’s flat out adorable and seems really devoted to Zoe. He took her last name as his own, which is sweet, and I dig his nonchalant response to Zoe’s concern.
Here are some photos of Zoe in Dolce & Gabbana (again) at the Spike TV’s Guy’s Choice awards on Saturday night. Plus some photos of Marco, of course.

This is a little checkup with Zoe Saldana’s quest to get back in fighting shape after giving birth to twin boys. She’s invited us into the process, which is unusual and (to me) preferable than seeing her bragging on a magazine cover about how chasing kids around made her snap back. Zoe’s intense film schedule will start back up in less than two months. She’s nervous about her baby weight even though those few lingering pounds look really fantastic on her. Zoe already talked about her “frustrating, painful” struggle to get her old body back. If she wasn’t an action movie star, I wouldn’t understand her rush. But I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that movie studios are breathing down her neck. Marvel famously visited Chris Pratt at home when he was losing weight, so it’s not beyond the realm of possibility here.
Zoe’s probably being really hard on herself too. She took to her Facebook page as an update. She promised to do this last week with a “Let?s do it together. Let?s talk about it, hear each other out, and seek advice when we need it.” So Zoe’s talking it out. She’s a little upset about her busy week, but she resolves to prioritize herself:
“I made it! After a week of postponing my workout due to life & meetings & work, I prioritized it. I prioritized myself. A good friend once told me that being self-focussed doesn’t necessarily mean you are being selfish. Be self-focussed!”
[Zoe Saldana on Facebook]
There’s also a post-workout selfie video at the link (and FYI, Guardians director James Gunn “liked” this post). This is just a tiny update, yet it reveals a lot about Zoe’s state of mind. She has baby twins, a husband, and multiple movies on the way. She has a nanny to help, but Zoe is so busy. I do sense the mommy-guilt complex in her words. Zoe is correct, it’s okay to focus on yourself even as a new mom. I would argue that some “alone” time for mom is healthy for the whole family. Zoe will work it out.

I’ll readily admit to pegging Zoe Saldana wrong as a celebrity mom. Perhaps it’s still too early to judge whether or not she’ll be judgy, but so far, Zoe’s been chill. Perhaps that’s because she’s so exhausted by the task of caring for twin baby boys. Zoe and Marco Perego welcomed their sons in November and waited to announce the names, Bowie and Cy, in January. Zoe looked tired but glorious at the Oscars. She was a bit curvier than usual, but the extra few pounds looked nice on her frame.
Zoe’s been having a tough time. Yesterday’s episode of GMA detailed her struggle to get back into shape. Zoe didn’t appear on the show, but her trainer (Steve Moyer) popped in for her. You can see the (autoplay) clip here, which discusses Zoe’s 70-pound weight gain during pregnancy. Moyer talks about planks (which I hate-love) and other core strength exercises to rebuild the body. The segment points towards Zoe’s weekend Facebook post, in which she reveals her ongoing health issues and a struggle to get back into fighting shape:
As you all know, we welcomed twin boys last November. Yes, by far, the most amazing experience of my life, but also a very challenging experience when it pertains to my body. I’m sure moms across the world (and dads sometimes) can identify with what I’m about to say.
Your body changes dramatically, inside and out. You grow in places you never knew you could, and you are tired beyond belief. In some cases more than others, your body experiences a kind of trauma through childbirth that is difficult to explain unless you’ve had that experience. My case was like that, everything from my thyroid to my platelets crashed. Thank God, we are all doing great now, but my body was really bent out of shape after the boys were born. Bouncing back feels impossible, but I know it is important as a woman, and now a mommy, to not give up. I am determined to get my energy back and find balance for my body before these little guys start walking, and before I go back to work ….. my clock is ticking!
2 months ago I started my journey, and its been REAL- I’m not gonna lie- it is slow …. painful … and frustrating. But it is worth it.
And that is why I’m here… I know many of you have gone through this or are going through it as we speak. Let’s do it together. Let’s talk about it, hear each other out, and seek advice when we need it. I have my friend of many years and trainer, Steve Moyer that will be guiding me and sometimes training me for the next 2 months before I go back to work. I will be sharing with you what I do, what I eat and how I feel about it in hopes that it will be of any help to you. cool?
I started in January with Moyer. I was 160lbs (at the peak of my pregnancy I reached 185lbs). I had no flexibility, weak joints, and exercising was painful. We started with just walking, I think I only walked that first month. I did however change the way I eat. I began to make better choices with my food. Moyer was instrumental at this point. he gave me great tips of what to eat, how much water to drink, he even gave me some recipes of his own sometimes. It was important for me to learn this so I can do it on my own if I have to. I want to prove to myself that if I have the right determination I can do anything.
Crap, boys are up from their naps! gotta go!
I’m looking fwd to sharing this journey with you…
[From Zoe Saldana on Facebook]
GMA talks about how Zoe’s struggle “humanizes” her, and I agree. Before she became pregnant, Zoe came off as full of herself. Now she’s going through something that many mothers have experienced. The platelet crash and thyroid problems sound particularly scary, right? I don’t think Zoe’s positioning herself as a future internet curator. She’s not out to profit directly from mom-based products and discussions. Zoe’s already got her plate full with twins and three ongoing movie franchises. She’ll be doing more Avatar and Guardians and Star Trek flicks. Her goal is to return to her butt-kicking best, and it’s a lot of pressure. I feel for her having to bounce back from twins so quickly, but … Hollywood.
Zoe also talked to Us Weekly last week about how she’s not looking forward to leaving the twins for work. She said, “I?m pretty sure that every parent — not just every mom– would [take time off] as long as your work doesn’t suffer. But we have to pay bills and at the end of the day, I think that’s the best example we can set to our children.” Zoe says that it takes three people (herself, Marco, and a nanny) to take care of twins. Sounds exhausting.
