Zoe Saldana was the star of the red carpet last night for the premiere of her leading turn in Colombiana. We?ve previewed the film before - I didn?t think it looked particularly good, and I?m still not really buying Zoe as the leading lady/action star that she desperately wants to be. We?ll see how Colombiana does.
For the premiere, Zoe wore a Balmain Resort 2012 mullet gown that I am having problems with. First, I?m just not big into mullet dresses (business in front, party in the back) in general. Second, this mullet dress seems to be designed to emphasize the biscuit area in particular? look at the way the skirt fabric drapes, look at the design of the skirt? Balmain created, in effect, a fabric-spotlight for Zoe?s biscuits. This is the opposite effect of ?vagina drapes?. This is like a vagina valence.
My biggest problem? THE SHOES. Ladies, stop wearing these ankle booties with skirts and gowns. They are extremely unflattering with an exposed leg. They cut off the line of your leg, and add weight. That issue isn?t a huge deal with Zoe, considering how extremely slender she is, but these booties still manage to be horrible and unflattering with this fug gown. What pains me is that the gown could have been lovely with some editing - I would enjoy it if the whole dress was this gold beading, and it was a short little cocktail dress. But I have to say, Rachel Zoe did not serve Zoe Saldana well on this one.

Hitting the red carpet to promote her latest theatrical effort, Zoe Saldana looked stunning at the Miami screening of TriStar Pictures' "Colombiana" in Miami, Florida on Monday evening (August 22).
Held at Regal South Beach, the "Avatar" beauty dazzled her way down the arrivals area as she gears up for the Olivier Megaton directed film's August 26th release.
Also starring Michael Vartan and Amandla Stenberg, "Colombiana" tells the story of "a young woman who, after witnessing her parents' murder as a child in Bogota, grows up to be a stone-cold assassin."
In the film, Miss Saldana plays the assassin - a role in which she recently told the AP that she was quite comfortable with thanks to having hunted during her childhood.
The 33-year-old dished, "I was really prepared for the fighting and the guns. I knew I would have to learn new fighting techniques since Cataleya (Zoe's character) has a unique fighting style that she learned through her uncle on the streets. But the guns weren't an issue. I grew up around a family of hunters in the Caribbean and guns were always around. I've gone hunting before, too. I have a lot of respect for weapons. Now, I obviously didn't know about all the weapons used in this movie, but that allowed me to create my own sort of swagger."
She added, "The fight scenes were certainly easier for me because I'm a dancer. The fight scenes were all about reacting and deflecting, and that doesn't always look graceful. It takes a lot of rhythm and physical grace."

In the last Zoe Saldana post, some of you took issue with the idea that I wouldn?t write about Zoe because I thought people wouldn?t be interested in her. Just to clarify: I wasn?t claiming to ?ignore? Zoe because she?s a woman of a color and I, according to some commenters, just ?hate? women of color. I was debating whether to cover a woman that I didn?t consider particularly relevant (or likeable, for that matter), and that I didn?t think people were very interested in. I find Zoe to be at times boring, and at times insufferable, which is merely my opinion. If you disagree and think she?s God?s gift, good for you. Feel free to disagree and comment about her - because I won?t write about people that don?t get comments.
Anyway, Zoe has a feature in the new issue of GQ. She?s promoting Colombiana, that La Femme Nikita-looking movie that looks? not good. Zoe is really trying to become ?the next Angelina Jolie? - so much so that the article even name-drops Jolie by calling Zoe ?the ass-kickingest female star since Angelina Jolie. Like Jolie, Saldana’s physicality? all fluid angles and long lines?is part of what makes her so much fun to watch; before the bad guys are finished staring, they’re already dead.? Here are some highlights:
Zoe Saldana was out dancing the other night when a fight broke out one table over. Her companions scattered; she stayed put. “I knew exactly what I was going to do,” she says. “Kick this door, grab this, move that guy out of the way. Then I started laughing: Oh, my God, I still have Cataleya in my system.”
Saldana’s action roots run deep. The actress, 33, grew up partly in the Dominican Republic, where she learned to climb mango trees and gut fresh-caught fish. She remembers herself as “a feminine tomboy. I had my plastic swords, my ninja stars?but I still wore lipstick.”
Next year she’ll trade the martial arts for a couple of marital dramas, though don’t expect any doting wives: “It gets pretty boring when all you are is the support system for a male character,” she says. “I want to be in the small percentage of women who don’t settle for conventional roles.”
[From GQ]
There?s some stuff about all of the training she went through for this part in Colombiana, and how she trained with the same guy who worked with Matt Damon on the Bourne films. She?s committed, I?ll give her that, and she does work hard. But I tend to think the Jolie comparisons are too soon, too much and too over-done. It feels like too many actresses are trying to work the Jolie Method instead of carving out their own unique niche in Hollywood.

Zoe Saldana was Uhura in the Star Trek remake and a sexy blue cat in “Avatar,” so a lot of dorky fanboy types are really into her now. I personally wouldn’t know, because I’m not a dorky fanboy. I just happen to love science fiction and being a virgin.

Yesterday, CB and I debated whether we should cover Zoe Saldana?s appearance at the Teen Choice Awards. CB?s take was basically that Zoe isn?t really important, in that people don?t give a crap about her in general. My take? The people who do care enough about her only care enough to dislike her. Personally, I tried to like Zoe, but after that horribly annoying Calvin Klein commercial (which she ?wrote? herself), I find her somewhat insufferable.
Anyway, CB and I ended up ignoring Zoe yesterday, so now there?s even more to love (or hate) today. Zoe covers the September issue of Latina Magazine to promote her new film, Colombiana. The trailer is below - it?s like The Professional meets La Femme Nikita, with a heavy dose of been there, done that. Don?t get me wrong - it?s certainly interesting to see Zoe try to take on this kind of stunt-heavy lead role in her own action film, but this doesn?t look very good:
See? It doesn?t look bad per se, it just looks repetitive, derivative and kind of tedious. As for Zoe?s Latina interview, she doesn?t come across too badly here:
Stunning Afro-Latina actress Zoe Saldana graces the September 2011 cover of Latina magazine?s fall style issue, available on newsstands August 16th. The 33-year-old Dominican and Puerto Rican star of this month?s Colombiana opens up to about how she nearly had an emotional collapse after catapulting to superstardom with Avatar, the highest-grossing movie of all time, and what helped her stay grounded.
On dealing with her newfound fame: ?The year after Avatar was just emotionally overwhelming. I was traveling all over the world, waking up in different time zones. Your body gets exhausted, and by the end of the year I just collapsed.?
On coming close to a total breakdown: ?I was in Paris training for Colombiana, sitting in my hotel room, and I couldn?t stop crying. I couldn?t stay awake. I must have slept for an entire month. It took me the rest of the year, even as I was working and shooting Colombiana, to pick myself up. Thank God my family was there.?
On the post-Avatar effect: ?I just want the best filmmakers in the world to tell me, ?You?re good, kid, you?re legit.? The recognition will never get old, and I?ll never get accustomed to it. I don?t ever want to, because that will mean I?m taking it for granted. That?s why I work, not for the luxuries or the awards.?
On the simple joys of life: ?I just stay at home and do absolutely nothing. When I was younger, that would have made me feel like such a failure. Now that I?m older, I know what it means to shut down. I don?t shower if I don?t want to. I don?t answer e-mails. It?s a healthy way of being selfish. You know you?re old when gardening, the Food Network and voice notes from your nieces and nephews blow your mind.?
On her small circle of friends: ?If you surround yourself with good people, if you?re having a bad day ? which everyone does ? they will protect you, and it will never reach any kind of surface. But if you surround yourself with people who don?t really love you and care for you, they?ll be the first ones to expose you. That?s dangerous.?
On the key to her 12-year relationship with actor Keith Britton: ?I think the only reason we?ve made it this long is because we don?t listen to anybody but ourselves. We?ve still managed to sustain a relationship in a world where half of the people we know are divorcing or going through problems. It?s like that song we both love by Frank Sinatra ? we did it our way!?
[From Latina]
Her description of the ?simple joys? sound more like depression, right? I like to be low-key and sit around watching the Food Network too, but I still answer emails and take showers. As for how difficult it is for Zoe to be so famous - er… she knows that most people can’t pick her out of lineup, right?
Here are some photos of Zoe at Sunday?s Teen Choice Awards. Her dress was Lanvin - it?s pretty but kind of meh, much like Zoe. She looks a bit like Jada Pinkett Smith, right? Which is why it?s extra weird that Michael Vartan is Zoe?s love interest in Colombiana, considering he plays Jada?s love interest in HawthoRNe.

I don’t know much about this Zoe Saldana woman, I think she was in that 3D movie about blue alien chicks, but I know that she’s looking pretty good in these shots of her walking the streets. I like this kind of thing, a woman who can look this good in a pair of jeans

Enjoying some time out on the town, Zoe Saldana hit up the West Hollywood scene last night (March 28).
The "Avatar" actress went for a trendy but casual look of a black blazer, navy crossover bag, ripped blue jeans, and knee-length black leather boots for the Katsuya dinner excursion.
On the career front, the 32-year-old has wrapped up filming "Colombiana" - which tells the story of her character, Cataleya Restrepo, a young woman who grows up to be a stone-cold assassin after witnessing her parents murder as a child in Bogota.
You can catch Zoe in her latest action-drama role when it hits theaters nationwide September 2nd.
