Lisa Kudrow on Friends' all white cast: 'it should be looked at as a time capsule'
Lisa Kudrow is in the new Steve Carrell series, Space Force. The show looks funny and the cast is comprised of really solid comedic actors, like Lisa. While doing press for the show, the Sunday Times asked about Friends because we got this close to some form of a reunion but COVID was all, ?psyche!? So now all we have is to once again talk about the show. (Not like the cast is ever not going to be asked about it.) The discussion, however, is leaning more and more into the question of how well did the show actually age? It certainly lacked for diversity and for a show that had strong LGBTQ characters in supporting roles, it made a lot of insensitive remarks. Lisa handled the question deftly, I think, when she said that the show does fall short in many ways when held up to today?s light but maybe it should be viewed more as a time capsule.

Friends star Lisa Kudrow has defended the hit 90s sitcom, saying it was progressive at the time but would not feature an all-white cast if it was made today.

The actress, 56, played Phoebe Buffay in every episode of the show about six young adults living in New York City between 1994 and 2004.

Kudrow told The Sunday Times that fans should look at the show as a time capsule, saying it would be completely different now.

She said: Well, it would not be an all-white cast, for sure. Im not sure what else, but, to me, it should be looked at as a time capsule, not for what they did wrong.

Also, this show thought it was very progressive. There was a guy whose wife discovered she was gay and pregnant, and they raised the child together.

We had surrogacy too. It was, at the time, progressive.

[From Sunday Times via Sky.com]

David Schwimmer said something similar in his Guardian interview. It not that the cast doesn?t understand the criticisms of the show, but when the show was being made, there were many progressive themes that hadn?t been portrayed in a mainstream program. Many shows suffer when considered through current, hopefully progressed, sensibilities. My all-time favorite TV show, M*A*S*H, still blows me away but OMG is it tragically sexist, among other outdated ideas. So I agree that it?s okay to view certain shows as time capsules as long as we can point out the ills of that time period as well.

The one thing, however, that I really wish the Friends cast would acknowledge when discussing the ?all white cast? is that Friends was inspired by Living Single, especially after this point was made repeatedly after David?s interview. There is a lot to suggest that Friends wasn?t just inspired by Living Single, but was likely the reason it was created, specifically an all-white version of the very well done and popular LS. So it?s fine to say that the show is progressive for the time in which it was made, but respect who blazed that trail while you are doing so.

Lisa Kudrow on a 'Friends' reboot: 'If everyone else was doing it, I would do it'
Friends? 20th Anniversary means fun gifts for fans: There?s the pop-up exhibit currently running in New York (through October 9). Several of the shows most popular episodes are playing in theaters (September 23, September 28, and October 2). And Pottery Barn is offering its Friends 25th Anniversary Collection (not an ad) for everyone who wants to imagine that they live in some of the most famous rent-controlled apartments in New York City. One wish that many fans have had over the years is for a reunion, and it?s always been nixed by members of the cast. Lisa Kudrow is the latest Friend to tell fans not to get their hopes up:

Given the immense popularity of Friends, the shows stars have been asked numerous times over the years about a potential reboot or revival. The latest to weigh in was Lisa Kudrow, who played Phoebe. She said on Kevin Nealons hiking show that she would be interested in coming back for a new version of Friends, but it wont happen.

If everyone else was doing it, I would do it; yeah. But its not happening, she said, adding that shes heard [creators Marta] Kauffman and [David] Crane talk about how Friends will never come back.

In March this year, Kauffman talked about why bringing back Friends is a bad idea.

One, the show is about a time in your life when your friends are your family. Its not that time anymore. All wed be doing is putting those six actors back together, but the heart of the show would be gone, she told Rolling Stone. Two, I dont know what good it does us. The show is doing just fine, people love it. [A reunion] could only disappoint.

[From GameSpot]

I went looking in the archives because I could have sworn I read somewhere that Lisa was one of the people who wasnt ever interested in a reunion. She basically said the same of Marta and David back in 2009, though she also wasnt sure about it then. Everything that Marta said makes sense: The show was about people who were in a particular stage of their lives, and they aren?t there anymore. A reboot would disappoint. Plus, fans can still imagine that the 6 Friends and their children are all still hanging out together. (Joey has obviously come home from California.)

I understand why fans who enjoyed the show would like to see it brought back, especially in our currently chaotic times. The show took place in an alternate reality in which the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, didn?t happen. The Season 8 premiere was dedicated to The people of New York City (and Joey and Chandlers Magna Doodle featured several relevant doodles). It would be nice for the show to take place in a world where Trump wasn?t president, for example. But, it?s probably better for Friends to stay in the past, and for people to binge the series on Netflix (through the end of the year), or with their DVDs.

Lisa Kudrow hates working out after suffering injuries from a tough trainer
Lisa Kudrow, 56, was on Conan trying to tell a cute story about how she finds working out punishing and doesnt do it. She said shes never liked exercising. Conan was questioning how much pain she was really in, and the whole vibe was weird like he was discounting her. Maybe thats because he knows her well or Im just not familiar with his humor, its hard to tell. Watch the video below and see if you agree with me. Heres what she said and as someone who loves working out I just felt bad for her, like she hasnt found her fitness niche yet. Exercise can be for everyone!

Ive known you a long time. You dont like to work out, you dont work at it. You never liked it.

Thats right. I hate it. I did try. I thought I should have a trainer. I started doing Friends. I just kept getting hurt. Theyre like Oh no you should work through the pain. No, Tthe pain is a sign that youre about to injure yourself. You dont work through it. You pay heed.

It doesnt sound like you had good trainers

I had the best. Work through the pain. Then the next day I cant walk for like weeks it hurts. Yeah yeah thats good, its ok. Its not.

Why are you suddenly getting hurt all the time?

The trainers hurt me. Where are we going [with this]? I am cautious anyway.

I wasnt being overly cautious. It was almost a tear in something. Ive got doctors in my family. They would say For Gods sake, stop. Im afraid of getting really hurt. I stopped skiing ten years ago because everyone gets hurt.

[From Conan via Youtube]

I love exercise, but I know its not everyones thing and so I try not to talk about it too much or Ill sound like an a-hole. (When my friends talk about dieting I also try to STFU.) Ive mentioned before that I think of it like crafting. There are so many different crafts to do and some people love it while I consider myself not crafty or artistic at all. However maybe I just havent found my craft yet, you know? I took a drawing class and it was scary at first but I ended up surprised by how much I liked it. So I think Lisa just had a bad experience and then generalized that. We beat ourselves up so much about the things were not good at when all we need to do is take a different approach. Or not. I bet Lisa is walking every day or doing yoga or something like that.

Lisa Kudrow was told she wasn't 'f?able' by Friends guest star
Lisa Kudrow, who played Phoebe Buffay on Friends, has worked probably the most constantly out of all the actors since the show. She is currently starring in and promoting Table 19 with Craig Robinson, Anna Kendrick, Stephen Merchant and June Squibb. Table 19 is about the Also-Rans’ table at every wedding and it looks to be sort of a ?Reclaim the Reception? type film. You can see the trailer here. I like the cast enough that I will likely see it at some point. Of course, Lisa is never going to be allowed to avoid questions on Friends when promoting anything else. While appearing on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Andy asked which Friends guest star behaved the poorest. Lisa answered, but in a maddeningly vague blind riddle way. She said that only after she showed up in hair and makeup did this guest see her as someone they could f**k.

Lisa Kudrowhas dished on some hot ?Friends? gossip while making the rounds promoting her new film, ?Table 19.?

On last night?s episode of ?Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,? a fan called in to ask the actress about the worst behavior she?d experienced from a guest star on the hit sitcom.

?The worst behavior just off the top of my head?? Kudrow replied. ?I rehearsed without makeup most of the week and then on show night I?m in hair and makeup and I was told, ?Oh, wow, now you?re? ? can I say it? ? ?now you?re f**kable.??

?That?s bad behavior, I say,? she told host Cohen and fellow guest Jennifer Beals. When Beals asked if Kudrow retaliated, the actress said she told Matt Leblanc about the comment because ?he?s like a big brother.?

Unfortunately, the Phoebe Buffay actress didn?t name any names, leaving us to ponder the possible suspects. She did, however, later reveal that it was not Charlie Sheen, so you can cross him off the list.

[From Huffington Post]

I hope Lisa issued a Churchillian response along the lines of, ?And yet, you still aren?t.? Lord, we could be here all day trying to figure out who this is. First I have to eliminate all the ‘It can?t be him because I heart him so very much‘ guest stars like Paul Rudd, Jeff Goldblum, Jon Favreau and Greg Kinnear. Removing Charlie Sheen sucks because that was such an easy answer. My first thought was Alec Baldwin. But a lot of tools appeared on Friends so it?s hard to say ? Jon Lovitz, Bruce Willis, Sean Penn, Jean-Claude Van Damme, to name a few. And, if you look at her very careful wording, she never said it was a man. Maybe Susan Sarandon was an **shole while on set.

Something Lisa was a little more definitive on was the possibility of a Friends reunion, for which she suggests we don?t hold our breath. While assuring everyone that the Friends are still very much friends in real life, she just doesn?t think Friends will go the way of Gilmore Girls and Will and Grace. Lisa?s point was, “The thing we liked best about the show was that they were 20-somethings and they were their own family. Now, they all have families, so what are we going to watch?” I was, am and suspect will always be a massive Friends fan but I think Lisa is right on here. I can’t see any Friends-in-present-day story getting it right. I?ll just stay happy with them popping up on each other?s shows from time to time.

Lisa Kudrow: 'I would never take a picture of me naked under any circumstance'
Friends has been off the air for ten years. Ten long years. But the six actors made enough money ? and then some ? from their Friends paychecks and syndication deals that none of them would have had to work again. For their post-Friends careers, I always had high hopes for Matthew Perry. He?s an underrated dramatic actor and when he started doing guest gigs on The Good Wife, I really hoped he would join the cast. I was disappointed though.

But ten years later, you know who is in the best shape? Lisa Kudrow. She?s a powerful TV producer and creative force and she?s loving her life and career. Web Therapy is a hit. The Comeback is having a comeback. And she executive produces Who Do You Think You Are? Lisa is still making that money, with a lot of creative freedom, and she has a solid personal life with her husband and teenage son. Kudrow had a wonderful interview with Vulture this week ? you can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

She loves playing weird characters: ?My favorite characters to play are people who aren?t aware of how they?re coming off. That?s what?s funny to me. Everybody has those moments.?

Creating Valerie Cherish on The Comeback: ?I didn?t care if I became completely irrelevant, because Friends gave me a huge gift. Whatever I?m putting my name on is something that I want to do.?

Finding out that HBO wanted a second season of The Comeback: ?Michael [Patrick King] and I were near tears in the parking lot after we met with HBO. We were sort of staring at each other like, ?What happened???

The celebrity nude-photo leaks: ?I can?t identify with that. I would never take a picture of me naked under any circumstance. Yeesh. No.?

What she thinks of ?Girls?: ?[I connected] because the question for me was, ?Is it really like that now? Oh, no, that?s awful.? That means nothing?s changed. It?s complete subservience to the guy, except with a better vocabulary and higher education and assertiveness in every area except the relationship.?

The frumpy floral housecoat in her office: ?I won?t let us throw this out because it?s the one Meryl Streep wore,? she says. Streep had discovered the series early on and, after they got to know each other at a Vassar event, Kudrow warned her that she’d ask her to be on it. ?This is the Meryl Streep stuff, so it?s not allowed to leave. Ever, ever, ever.?

She hates shopping: ?I hate putting my arms through sleeves and it not going through the first time so you have to readjust the trajectory. On that micro level I hate it.?

How she came up with Web Therapy: ?Then I thought. How funny if people didn?t leave their desk to do therapy and they just do three minutes at a time??

Jon Hamm will guest star this season of Web Therapy: Hamm plays Jeb, a phone-sex operator for the elderly. ?His business is called Absolute Last Call,? says Kudrow, practically hiccuping with laughter. In their first episode together, Hamm?s character talks to a client in the middle of therapy. ?He has that Mercedes voice,? says Kudrow. ?You know, ?Hey, what are you wearing? Pink housecoat? Oh, yeah. Did you get it wet? Was it an accident?? I?ve never broken that much, ever. I started crying I was laughing so hard.?

[From Vulture]

See? She just sounds happy and fulfilled. In real life, Lisa isn?t desperately clinging to a sliver of tabloid fame or trying to prove that she?s still some hot young thing. She?s just? creative. Talented. She owns who she is. And I?m really looking forward to Jon Hamm on Web Therapy!!

Here?s the trailer for the second season (nine years later) of The Comeback:

Lisa Kudrow on her nose job at 16: 'That was life altering'
Lisa Kudrow is about to join ABC’s Scandal, which just makes me remember that I have a lot of excellent (trashy) TV to start catching up with. (I haven’t been watching much TV during the site redesign, that is about to change and I am so looking forward to it.)

Kudrow, 50, did an interview with The Saturday Evening Post that is worth reading in its entirety. Kudrow is an actress whom I think of fondly but don’t really follow, so it was a nice surprise to read some of the things she said about her career and remaining positive in the face of adversity. She told a story about how she got shunned by all the popular girls in junior high, and how much of an effect it had on her. This also happened to me in junior high, girls that age can be incredibly cruel, and I found myself relating to her. It’s hard to pick out just the best quotes from this interview since there’s a lot of insight and quotable lines, but I’ll try.

Have you ever experienced anti-Semitism?

LK: Yes, I have. In college there was more anti-Semitism than before college, because there were people who never met a Jew before. A friend of mine, when she found out I was Jewish, said, ?Really? Oh, I don?t like Jews.?

Q: Can you relate the story of how your two best friends in junior high school told you they didn?t want to be friends with you anymore?

LK: That happened in seventh grade when we moved from sixth grade to a new school. So they knew some people, and I didn?t. Eventually they just got tired of me being a tag-along. They said, ?For your own good, you need to see what would happen if we weren?t here.? It was really brutal. Very hard.

Q: Turned your world upside down?

LK: Yeah, it did. It was just mean. And all of junior high felt upside down to me. It was not, like, the nice people who were popular; it wasn?t the most entertaining people?it was the meanest people who were popular. We were reading Macbeth at the time, and I remember the three witches: ?What?s fair is foul and foul is fair.? That?s all I could hear in my head during that whole period. When my friends dropped me I was asking my parents, ?What did I do?? And my father would say, ?F ?em.? His answer to everything. And my mother would say, ?You can?t do that.?

Q: Was it your older sister who rescued you from being isolated in school?

LK: She did, definitely. Unbelievable of her too, because I was 13 and she was 20. She would find out when our half days were, when everyone would go out to lunch and I would have no one to eat with. She would pick me up and take me to lunch. That?s extraordinary to me. It was just very generous of her to be so sensitive and aware, even though there was nothing anyone could do.

Q: You did something about your appearance, having your nose fixed when you were 16.

LK: That was life altering. I went from, in my mind, hideous, to not hideous. I did it the summer before going to a new high school. So there were plenty of people who wouldn?t know how hideous I looked before. That was a good, good, good change.

Q: Do people still call you Phoebe?

LK: Yes, they do. I don?t turn around. I never turn around. If someone?s in front of me, I?ll smile and try to be nice. But I don?t like taking pictures. Autographs are fine.

[From The Saturday Evening Post]

She was probably just as lovely with her original nose, and associated her old look with what she went through as a younger teen, and moving past that. So many actors and actresses have had nose jobs, it seems like the one plastic surgery procedure that they have in common.

There’s even more I didn’t include, like about how she got encouraged to act by Jon Lovitz, who was a friend of her brother, and how Conan O’Brien was in her first improv class. Conan claims that Kudrow deserves the credit for the fact that he became a talk show host. She confirmed that story, saying that she gave him the idea. (She wasn’t bragging, it sounded more matter-of-fact.) She said “I remember saying, ‘If Letterman?s leaving his late-night show, he?s irreplaceable. So better it be someone we don?t know at all.’ So I thought he should look into it.” I came away from this interview wanting to be friends with her, and resolved to start watching her recent show Web Therapy. I’m going to add it to my fall binge list. The couch is calling.

Lisa Kudrow says the creators of 'Friends' don't want a reunion
It seems like people have been talking about a ?Friends? reunion since before the show was even off the air. There have been all sorts of rumors about why it hasn?t happened; mostly having to do with which cast members weren?t on board. Supposedly there was always one holdout ? Jennifer Aniston, perhaps? None of the other cast members would name names, but Jen has the biggest career of the six of them. Now Lisa Kudrow says the real hold outs are the show?s creators, who just don?t see any good coming from a ?Friends? reunion.

Still hoping for a certain sextet to get back together for lattes, love and laughs at Central Perk?

The wait for a Friends reunion, sadly, might be forever.

Castmate Lisa Kudrow — a.k.a. Phoebe — broke the news to Usmagazine.com that “it doesn’t look like” a reunion for the blockbuster NBC sitcom will ever happen.

“Everyone is busy!” Kudrow explained at Sunday’s P.S. Arts Express Yourself event in Santa Monica, Calif.

The biggest objectors, Kudrow suggests, aren’t Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox or any of the actors, but the show’s original writer-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane. ” I guess they don’t think it’s a good idea,” she said.

Not that Kudrow, 46, is completely sold, either: “It would be fun, but I don’t know. How? Why? Really?”

The highly-rated series — its six regulars ended up making $1 million per episode by the finale — ran from 1994 to 2004.

[From Us Weekly]

I really enjoyed the show when it was on and made sure I never had anything planned on Thursday nights as a result (sad, I know). But I agree with Lisa ? how and why? They wrapped things up reasonably well, and their last few seasons were really good. There were some seasons in the middle that were absolutely awful, so it?s good that they got to go out on a high note. Why mess with that? People are going to be so critical of it, no matter what. The standards would be impossibly high.

I think the problem is that there are no traditional sitcoms left on the air that are any good. People miss the laugh track. Friends was reliable ? even when it sucked, it was still better than most of the other stuff on television. It?s comforting and familiar, like that ex-boyfriend you migrate back to in between better guys. There?s nothing novel or interesting about it, but it can make a reappearance in your life every so often to fill in the gaps. That?s what reruns are for.

Here?s Lisa in Beverly Hills on November 3rd. Images thanks to WENN.com .

Lisa Kudrow to appear on Courtney Cox's 'Cougar Town'
Courtney Cox’s old “Friends” castmate, Lisa Kudrow, will make a cameo on Cox’s new ABC sitcom, “Cougar Town”, which airs Wednesdays at 9:30. The show is performing well in the ratings and has been picked up by ABC for a new season, so it doesn’t particularly need a boost. Kudrow could benefit from the appearance as much as the show - she hasn’t been seen much since her HBO faux reality series “The Comeback” was canceled after one season in 2005. She now stars on an improvised Internet-based show called Web Therapy that’s earning praise from fans.

This excerpt has spoilers for Cougar Town beyond the news that Kudrow will appear:

We know this much to be true: Any Friends rerun playing at 11:30 p.m. on channel 5 is still as good or better than most of the original episodes of TV airing on any given day.

Friends still rules, after all this time, which is why we’re delighted that five years after the series went off the air, Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow are reuniting onscreen!

ABC sources confirm that Kudrow is set to film an episode of Cox’s hit freshman series, Cougar Town, later this month.

But who will Lisa play, and when will we see the episode onscreen? Here’s what we can tell you…

According to Ms. Cox herself in TV Guide magazine, “If it all works out, she’ll play a dermatologist that my character can’t stop going to even though the doctor is mean to me…whatever it is [she does], she’s the best in town at what she does and I become addicted.”

Words that could apply equally well to Cox, Kudrow and their fellow Friendly brethren: Best in town and addictive. (Yay for this reunion!)

The Kudrow-Cox joint is expected to premiere in early 2010 on ABC.

Do you already love Cougar Town, or can you live without it until Kudrow comes by?

[From E! Online]

I really loved Friends, but Cougar Town is no Friends with benefits. I’ve tried to watch the show and sat through the whole first episode. Some of the jokes made me cringe and the dialogue is over the top and unrealistic. The characters get in ridiculous situations that could never happen in real life. I watched about ten minutes of the second episode before I switched it off. A lot of people enjoy Cougar Town, and I’ve seen people raving about it online, but it’s just not for me. It seems like it appeals to the same fans of Scrubs, which I also couldn’t get into. For that type of genre it’s probably a great show that I’m just not able to appreciate.

I enjoy more subtle kind of humor - like Friends, that was a great show. Eastwick on ABC is a supernatural dramedy that I really enjoy this season, too, and the rest of my favorites are dramas. I’d love to see more of the former Freinds castmembers and this is good news that Kudrow will be popping up in Cougar Town.

Is a 'Friends' movie coming'
Rumors have resurfaced that a “Friends” movie, based on the hit NBC sitcom that ran for ten years, is in the works. “Friends” has been off the air for five years and it seems like we’ve been hearing stories of a big screen version ever since. Last year, The Daily Mail claimed that a Friends movie was forthcoming, and that it would be produced by Warner Brothers, a claim that Warner Brothers promptly denied. Now News of The World has a new interview with James Michael Tyler, who played cute bald barista Gunther at the show’s coffee house, Central Perk. Tyler allegedly confirms that a film is underway, and that everyone has signed on, including presumed holdout Jennifer Aniston:

Hugs all round - because we can reveal that Friends is back for a big-screen version of the hit sitcom.

Studio bosses have got together for an oversized mug of coffee to prepare a script for a film version of the series.

And they are ready to break the bank with a multi-million package to get the main cast on board.

In an exclusive interview with the News of the World, James Michael Tyler - who played Central Perk oddball Gunther - confirmed: “Friends: The Movie is definitely on. I still keep in touch with a lot of the cast and they say that they are really keen.”

The film comes in the wake of the big screen version of Sex And The City which took an astonishing $408,921,925 at the box office.

The cast have always made no secret about a desire to do a film and Lisa Kudrow said: “It would be so fun to be with all those people again.

“But our show was not like Sex and the City - ours was multi-camera, in front of a live audience.

“It’s a completely different feel. You’d have to bring the tone down, and I don’t know how it would be. I’ll just stay open.”

Meanwhile actor James, 47, who is in London for the launch of a Central Perk themed coffee shop in Soho, is keen to reprise his role as Gunther on the big screen.

He said: “The one thing I can tell you is that I am definitely on board to do the film.

“I really loved my time on the show and I am looking forward to meeting up with the old gang again.

“I just hope we can do justice to the show in a film.”

[From News of The World]

Jennifer Aniston is just about the only castmember who seems busy and successful enough to want to avoid a film version of “Friends.” She’s been gracious to the show that helped launch her career but has said several times that she’s moved on and doesn’t want to do a movie. Aniston has her own production company and according to IMDB she has three films in post production and a whopping seven films in development. I doubt she has the time or inclination to remind us yet again how well she plays Rachel Green. Courtney Cox has a new sitcom, “Cougar Town,” that premiered last week and is doing well in the ratings. (I saw it and thought it was goofy and trying too hard, but people seem to like it.) She isn’t that booked and would probably gladly do a “Friends” movie. The other cast members, Lisa Kudrow, Matt Leblanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer, have all kind of floundered in their careers post-”Friends” and would probably love to a do a film.

That said, it’s possible that News of the World is either making this up (they’ve been known to fabricate entire interviews) or that they’re twisting Tyler’s words to make it sound like a movie is in the works when all he said was that he’d be open to it. It seems like all the latest films are based on old ideas and I wouldn’t be surprised if this was in the works, but I won’t believe it until I hear confirmation from a reliable source. “Friends” was a great show, though, and I would definitely go see the movie if this is true.
