Matthew Perry passed away at his home on Saturday. TMZ reportedly paid off a police source to break the news before Perry?s family was informed of his passing. Hellish. Perry?s family came to the scene quickly and the family made some heartbreaking statements. It felt like everyone was waiting for Perry?s Friends costars to speak out, and they waited until they all agreed on a joint statement. They kept it simple. I?m sure they?re all devastated.
The Friends cast is mourning one of their own. Two days after Matthew Perrys sudden death, his fellow castmates from the hit television series ? Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt Leblanc and David Schwimmer ? spoke out in a joint statement, exclusively obtained by PEOPLE.
We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family, their statement reads. There is so much to say, but right now we?re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.
In time we will say more, as and when we are able, the statement continues. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty?s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.
The message is then signed by Aniston, Cox, Kudrow, LeBlanc and Schwimmer.
Series co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane were joined by executive producer Kevin Bright in issuing a joint statement on Sunday.
?We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew?s passing,? they wrote. ?It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives. He was a brilliant talent.? Reflecting on Perry?s breakout performance, they noted, ?It?s a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew?s case, there are no truer words. From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us.?
Kaufman, Crane and Brights statement continued, ?We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment ? not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart. We send all of our love to his family and friends. This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.?
[From People]
Calling him ?Matty? broke my heart a little bit that was his nickname with the Friends cast. I hope they?re all talking and supporting each other at this time. While I knew Perry was well-liked within Hollywood, I?ve been surprised by just how many celebrities have been mourning him as a longtime friend. Salma Hayek also posted a statement (they worked together on Fools Rush In) and Gwyneth Paltrow revealed in her statement that they hooked up in their 20s.

Matthew Perry has been going through some things, some of them self-inflicted and some of them not. He?s clearly had some health issues in the past year, and his hospitalization was likely the reason why he seemed a little bit out of it during the Friends reunion. But the self-inflicted issue? Matthew was apparently still on Raya over the past year. Raya is the dating app for celebrities, and we know Perry was on it because he matched with a 19 year old and she filmed a short clip of their Zoom date and posted it on TikTok. Now it looks like Perry?s engagement to Molly Hurwitz has fallen apart, because oh right, he was engaged while he was hitting up TikTokers on Raya.
Matthew Perry and fiance Molly Hurwitz are going their separate ways.
The Friends star has called off his engagement to the literary manager, PEOPLE can exclusively report.
Sometimes things just dont work out and this is one of them, Perry said, in a statement. I wish Molly the best.
Perry, 51, and Hurwitz, 29, began dating in 2018 and got engaged in November 2020.
I decided to get engaged, Perry told PEOPLE at the time. Luckily, I happened to be dating the greatest woman on the face of the planet at this time.
[From People]
Since we don?t know the timeline of when Perry was hitting up teenagers on Raya, we can only guess that some of that was a surprise to Molly. You know what I mean? Having a Zoom date with a 19-year-old Instagram model is a dealbreaker for many women, although again, we don?t know what Molly and Matthew?s relationship boundaries were. The broken engagement suggests that Raya was likely an issue, but honestly we don?t know. I?ve always felt pretty sorry for Perry he was one of the most talented people on the Friends cast, but addiction is a hell of a thing. I hope he?s sober these days and I hope his only issue is that he?s not great in relationships.

| Matthew Perry: Millennials on the street are 'very confused by how old I look' | Added 9 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

This is a photo of Matthew Perry encountering millennials on the street in January. They’re all excited to meet Chanandler Bing, and he was gracious in response. The cigarette, ugh. But I will always have a soft spot for Perry. He’ll always be my favorite Friend, and I keep rooting for him to find the right mix on another television show.
With that said, I caught The Odd Couple last night, and the inner Chandler Bing voice spilled right out: “Could this BE any more awkward?” Perry was fine as Oscar, he’s a trooper. Thomas Lennon seems tailor made for the role of uptight Felix. Yvette Nicole Brown worked her lines too, but the show is a stinker. The writing isn’t funny, and the laugh track is one of the most obnoxious I’ve heard. Perry’s pushing through the publicity. He has a charming new interview that’s much better than his show:
On being recognized: “Friends definitely had that magic attached to it. It had great casting, great directing, great writing. It hasn?t been off the air since we finished shooting it, and now, with Netflix, it?s getting a new audience and I am getting recognised in the street by people who weren?t even alive when we actually shot the show … who are very confused … by how old I look.”
He’s addicted to humor to a fault: “I come from a funny family, and I?ve always been more comfortable in an atmosphere that was lighthearted. But I got to a point where I was kind of addicted to it. I always wanted to fill the silence with a joke — and that?s not an especially healthy way to be. It was like that going out with girls. If you made a joke on the first and second date she would love it. But if you were still making jokes on the seventh date, she?d be saying: ‘One more joke and I?m going to kill you!’”
Still looking for love? “I love children. I have a lot of much younger brothers and sisters so I was always babysitting as a kid. I have godchildren, whom I love, and I look forward to being a father. I think I?ll be wonderful at it. There?s just one important step to be taken first. Like being able to go on a second date …”
Overcoming his struggles: “I?m a little older, a little wiser. I have spent a lot of time trying to get centered in my life and to be a little less anxious and nervous, and I think I?m succeeding. Yes, it?s been well-documented that I?ve had my own troubles in life, and you can?t help but use those as a springboard to try to become better or you sort of get lost in the darkness of it all. My life is a lot less about myself now. I get much more of a kick out of helping people than out of anything else I do, including acting. So out of darkness comes light.”
[From Daily Mail]
Perry also talks about his struggles with sudden fame and how he coped with drugs. We’ve covered that before. He seems healthier now, and hopefully it will stick. I completely empathize with his addiction to humor to lighten an uncomfortable silence. That can wreak havoc on a budding relationship. Perry dated Lizzy Caplan for a few years, but they’ve been over for awhile. He says he can’t find a woman who will go out with him on a second date. Assuming he no longer goes three months without changing bedsheets, he’ll get there eventually.

Matthew Perry was my favorite ensemble member from Friends. I liked all of the characters except for Ross Gellar, but Perry is particularly gifted at physical comedy and feigning outrage. He’ll always be Chandler Bing (or Chanandler Bong) to me. Perry has a new show (or an old one, depending how you look at it). He’s starring in a remake of The Odd Couple with Thomas Lennon (of The State). Perry plays the messy Oscar, and Lennon plays the uptight Felix. Perry sat down with HuffPo for promotional duties, and he revealed his own tendencies as a proud slob. This was a 20 questions interview, so the answers are short:
His most obsessive habit: “I play video games for hours and hours and hours at a time.”
Does he take out his own garbage? “I pay somebody to do that for me.”
How long has he let sheets stay on his bed? “Three months.”
How long is the wait for the dishwasher? “The sink gets pretty full.”
Is he in a relationship? “No. I’m looking for Miss Right at the moment.”
His relationship deal breaker: “Someone who’s unhappy. Being unhappy, not liking the move Annie Hall and being unhappy with the movie Annie Hall”
How he flirts: “I act like an imbecile. I try to impress them and I just act like a … I try too hard at times I think.”
[From HuffPo]
Perry has an admirable, self-deprecating sense of humor. I wonder if he’s exaggerating about leaving sheets on his bed for three months. He did say this only happened until he hired a housekeeper, so it’s not like it’s an ongoing problem. But three months is pretty gross. I used to be obsessive about changing sheets too often but now follow the standard once a week recommendation. That’s normal, right?
I don’t know what to think of Perry’s Annie Hall qualification for dating women. The Woody Allen worship runs deep in Hollywood.

A scruffy, smirking Matthew Perry covers this week’s People Magazine with the tagline “My Life as an Addict.” Perry, 43, has been sober for years after publicly battling addiciton during the height of his fame in the late 90s and early aughts. We last heard him talk about his addiction issues during interviews he did a little over a month ago, when he was discussing his advocacy work. Perry was honored at the White House a few weeks ago for his work advocating for drug courts, which attempt to use rehabilitation for addicts instead of incarceration.
He’s really put his money where his mouth is, and donated his entire house in Malibu to be used as a men’s sober living facility called Perry House. So it’s kind of heart-warming to see Perry cover People this week, and to see him him get the recognition he deserves. He’s not even promoting anything so kudos to People. Here’s a preview of their upcoming story:
For a decade, Matthew Perry was living an actor’s dream: he had an iconic role as sardonic Chandler Bing on the beloved No. 1 sitcom Friends and a salary that reached $1 million an episode.
But behind the scenes, Perry was struggling. “I had a big problem with alcohol and pills and I couldn’t stop,” he tells PEOPLE in an exclusive new cover story. “Eventually things got so bad that I couldn’t hide it, and then everybody knew.”
After a harrowing, years-long battle with addictions to alcohol and Vicodin, Perry, 43, finally got sober. “Something clicked,” he says. “You have to want the help.” And he’s now dedicated to helping other addicts. He turned his former Malibu beach home into a men’s sober living facility called Perry House, and he’s becoming a passionate advocate for drug courts, through which non-violent substance abusers receive treatment instead of incarceration for their offenses.
Perry, who recently starred on the sitcom Go On and appears in recurring role on The Good Wife, says that sobriety and helping others have led him to finally find “true happiness” in his life. “The interesting reason that I can be so helpful to people now is that I screwed up so often,” he says. “It’s nice for people to see that somebody who once struggled in their life is not struggling any more.”
[From People]
Several of you commented on our last Matthew Perry story that he’s been with actress Lizzy Caplan since 2006. I didn’t know that! I really liked her in Hot Tub Time Machine and “True Blood.” The make a cute couple, but they’re not attention seeking in the least. I’ve never seen a photo of them together on a red carpet or anything. (There are photos of them at sporting events together, but I didn’t notice until now.)
Perry was so good in “Go On” and I’m bummed that the show was canceled. Decent sitcoms are rare, and he really has the comedic chops to carry his own show, he just needs the right vehicle. Maybe Perry could find a home on cable. He would be awesome in a raunchier comedy I think.
While I’m psyched that Perry is getting some love I can’t help but think that Melissa McCarthy over on the right sidebar there could have earned a full cover. The Heat is a big hit and she’s a bona fide movie star now. Maybe she didn’t grant People an exclusive interview though.

It was only a matter of time before the parodies came in of "Two and a Half Men" star Angus T. Jones' video urging fans to stop watching the show.
In a hilarious new Funny or Die video, Matthew Perry takes on the young actor's rant with a rambling testimony himself, urging viewers to stop watching his NBC show, "Go On."
During the rant, he mentions having skimmed through the Bible, but then confuses scenes from "The Life of Pi" with Biblical stories.
Poking fun at his own issues with substance abuse, the "Friends" star eventually retracts his statement upon his "Go On" costar's offer of the drug Percocet. Watch the full video below.

Former “Friends” star Matthew Perry announced this weekend that he will be going away for a month to focus on his sobriety. And FYI, if you can’t focus your eyes, you probably aren’t sober. Might wanna write that one down, if you aren’t too drunk to hold a pencil. TMZ says:
Matthew Perry issued a statement saying, “I?m making plans to go away for a month to focus on my sobriety and to continue my life in recovery. Please enjoy making fun of me on the world wide web.?
We’re told Perry has not suffered any sort of relapse — but has planned the trip as a proactive measure… in his ongoing battle with substance abuse.
Matthew Perry going away would probably be newsworthy if anybody had any idea he’d ever come back. I just assumed Warner Brothers drove him out onto an abandoned lot and put a bullet in the back of his head after The Whole Ten Yards went to DVD, like the “tell me about the rabbits, George” scene in Of Mice and Men.
Hey, you know who isn’t going away? Marisa Miller. Or my personal hero, Captain Morgan:

Oh noes! I thought Matthew Perry had already conquered his addictions, but it looks like he hasn?t. Late Thursday, Perry announced (through a statement which his rep released to all media agencies) that he was making plans ?to go away for a month? to focus on his sobriety. Back in 1990s, Perry had a big problem with? Vicodin, if I remember correctly. His prescription pill-and-alcohol issues forced him into rehab in 1997, and then again in 2001 (which I have no memory of??). So, it sounds like he?s got issues again:
Matthew Perry is acting as his own best friend. The Mr. Sunshine star, who has battled substance abuse in years past, says he’s taking a month off from showbiz to stay on top of his always-in-progress recovery.
So, where’s he going to go?
Perry’s not going to just tell us that, of course, but he has confirmed that he’ll be out of commission for awhile.
“I’m making plans to go away for a month to focus on my sobriety and to continue my life in recovery,” he said in a statement passed on by his rep. “Please enjoy making fun of me on the World Wide Web.”
Aw, there’s no need for anyone to do that, old chum.
Perry made at least two trips to rehab while shooting Friends, in 1997 and again in 2001, to combat prescription-pill addiction and alcohol abuse. During that time, his weight noticeably fluctuated and he suffered from pancreatitis in 2000, brought on by the damage inflicted on his insides by drinking and drugging.
We wish him a happy month off and hope he continues on the healthy track.
[From E! News]
Meh, I don?t really feel like making fun of him, mostly because he?s not some belligerent, raging-lunatic, crackheaded nuisance always on the hustle. He?s a talented guy - I always thought that Perry and Lisa Kudrow were the most talented actors on Friends, and although I don?t watch Mr. Sunshine, I liked the idea of Perry and Alison Janney doing a comedy together. I do wonder about this though - I wonder if this was Perry?s decision, all on his own, or if this is a pre-emptive strike against some soon-to-be-released information that is especially horrible. Like, maybe he?s The Herpe Blind Item? He?s probably worth about $100 million from Friends residuals and stuff. Oh, God.

Rumors have resurfaced that a “Friends” movie, based on the hit NBC sitcom that ran for ten years, is in the works. “Friends” has been off the air for five years and it seems like we’ve been hearing stories of a big screen version ever since. Last year, The Daily Mail claimed that a Friends movie was forthcoming, and that it would be produced by Warner Brothers, a claim that Warner Brothers promptly denied. Now News of The World has a new interview with James Michael Tyler, who played cute bald barista Gunther at the show’s coffee house, Central Perk. Tyler allegedly confirms that a film is underway, and that everyone has signed on, including presumed holdout Jennifer Aniston:
Hugs all round - because we can reveal that Friends is back for a big-screen version of the hit sitcom.
Studio bosses have got together for an oversized mug of coffee to prepare a script for a film version of the series.
And they are ready to break the bank with a multi-million package to get the main cast on board.
In an exclusive interview with the News of the World, James Michael Tyler - who played Central Perk oddball Gunther - confirmed: “Friends: The Movie is definitely on. I still keep in touch with a lot of the cast and they say that they are really keen.”
The film comes in the wake of the big screen version of Sex And The City which took an astonishing $408,921,925 at the box office.
The cast have always made no secret about a desire to do a film and Lisa Kudrow said: “It would be so fun to be with all those people again.
“But our show was not like Sex and the City - ours was multi-camera, in front of a live audience.
“It’s a completely different feel. You’d have to bring the tone down, and I don’t know how it would be. I’ll just stay open.”
Meanwhile actor James, 47, who is in London for the launch of a Central Perk themed coffee shop in Soho, is keen to reprise his role as Gunther on the big screen.
He said: “The one thing I can tell you is that I am definitely on board to do the film.
“I really loved my time on the show and I am looking forward to meeting up with the old gang again.
“I just hope we can do justice to the show in a film.”
[From News of The World]
Jennifer Aniston is just about the only castmember who seems busy and successful enough to want to avoid a film version of “Friends.” She’s been gracious to the show that helped launch her career but has said several times that she’s moved on and doesn’t want to do a movie. Aniston has her own production company and according to IMDB she has three films in post production and a whopping seven films in development. I doubt she has the time or inclination to remind us yet again how well she plays Rachel Green. Courtney Cox has a new sitcom, “Cougar Town,” that premiered last week and is doing well in the ratings. (I saw it and thought it was goofy and trying too hard, but people seem to like it.) She isn’t that booked and would probably gladly do a “Friends” movie. The other cast members, Lisa Kudrow, Matt Leblanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer, have all kind of floundered in their careers post-”Friends” and would probably love to a do a film.
That said, it’s possible that News of the World is either making this up (they’ve been known to fabricate entire interviews) or that they’re twisting Tyler’s words to make it sound like a movie is in the works when all he said was that he’d be open to it. It seems like all the latest films are based on old ideas and I wouldn’t be surprised if this was in the works, but I won’t believe it until I hear confirmation from a reliable source. “Friends” was a great show, though, and I would definitely go see the movie if this is true.

I was one of the only people in America who watched Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, that ill-fated NBC drama about the inner-workings and personalities behind a Saturday Night Live-type show. One of the main reasons I watched it (and loved it) was that I adored the two leads - Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford. Those two actors were the best parts of their respective hit shows, Friends and The West Wing, and seeing them together was lovely. But not many people noticed, because the show was brutally cancelled just when it was getting really interesting.
All of this to say I consider Matthew Perry a very underrated actor. He can do slapstick comedy, he can do that dialogue-heavy comedy, and he can do emotionally-resonate drama. It?s a shame he hasn?t found a real niche for himself after Friends. He?s really great on television, and he would be an incredible addition to any show. Matthew actually has some ideas about that - he wants to get cast on his favorite show, Lost, but he thinks people will just see it as ?Chandler Bing… on the island.?
Former Friends star Matthew Perry is desperate to return to TV - and land a role in drama Lost.
The funnyman, who played Chandler Bing in the hit sitcom, admits he?s hooked on the desert island drama and wouldn?t hesitate to take a part if it was offered to him.
He says, “I want to be on that show so bad, but people would be like, ?What?s Chandler doing on the island?? So it isn?t going to happen.?
“But I am truly addicted to the show. I even follow the story lines online.”
From PR-Inside
I?m addicted too, Matthew! And I do think he should be cast on Lost, even it?s just a temporary thing, like in a flash-back (or flash-forward?) just for one episode. He would be great. And he wouldn?t even have to be on the island.
So, I have a confession. I just used this little Matthew Perry story as an excuse to talk about the last episode of Lost. Spoilers (in case you haven?t seen this week?s episode): What in the hell is happening with Sayid? I didn?t know what to think when he shot the young Ben Linus. Isn?t this going to mess up the… whatjamathingie? Like, the flux capacitor? It?s like a timeline paradox, a rip in the fabric of history. Unless the young Ben didn?t really die. But how would that be? Sayid shot him through the heart.
Also, who else loved Elizabeth Mitchell and Josh Holloway this week? Jim and Juliet really love each other… hopefully the producers realize that the Kate-Jack-Sawyer thing is so tired. And I?m pretty sure that the woman who handcuffed Sayid (which was a sexy scene) is actually working for Ben. Or maybe Widmore? More likely Ben.
