Katy Perry covers the January issue of Marie Claire. The cover doesn’t really do her justice. I agree with much of what was said about Katy and John Mayer’s coupley Vanity Fair portraits. She is really a stunning woman, and I think she looks best when not completely styled like a bouquet of sparkly candy. On this cover, I’m feeling shades of the “I Kissed a Girl” era. That wasn’t a flattering look at all. The editorial treats Katy better, especially the close-up of her face, and I’ve included those pictures at the bottom of the post.
In the interview, Katy is still talking about her divorce from Russell Brand. Of course! Because Prism was marketed upon the premise of Katy as the makeup-addled phoenix rising from the ashes. It’s actually laughable how every interview to promote this album has trashed Russell. We’ve heard that his “shock” divorce filing made Katy suicidal even though she signed the papers with a happy face. Katy also emphasized that Russell was just so mean with his text breakup, and she’s so glad she can finally speak up roar for herself. And so on. Here are some excerpts that talk about how Russell wanted to destroy Katy’s career by making her have a baby:
On not slowing down: “I’m never going to be lazy, because there are 500 other people waiting in line for this position.”
On having kids: “I’m definitely not there yet, and I can’t plan that far in advance. When I decide to have a family, I’ll just want to be Mom for a little bit.[Brand] really wanted me to have children, and I knew I wasn’t ready – I think it was a way of control. I think it was part of, If I have a kid, then I would have to sacrifice – I’d have to be home more. I really wanted to, but I knew I wasn’t ready for it. It wasn’t like, ‘Hey, let’s have a kid because we’re in love.”
On being vulnerable: “I feel like my secret magic trick that separates me from a lot of my peers is the bravery to be vulnerable and truthful and honest. I think you become more relatable when you’re vulnerable. When you try to market yourself like some supernatural figurine who can’t be fucked with, I always resort back to Scripture: ‘Pride comes before a fall.’”
On Prism, her new album: “I thought it was going to be a lot darker – acoustic or Fiona Apple-y. You know, a ‘hell hath no fury like a woman scorned’ vibe.”
On the dark hours following her split from ex-husband Russell Brand: “There were two weeks of my life after I found out the truth of my marriage where I was like, ‘OK. All right. I can’t feel this. This is too intense right now.’ I was, like, just eating Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and drinking, and that’s it.”
On her relationship with her parents: “People don’t understand that I have a great relationship with my parents – like, how that can exist. There isn’t any judgment. They don’t necessarily agree with everything I do, but I don’t necessarily agree with everything they do. They’re at peace with – they pray for me is what they do. They’re fascinated with the idea that they created someone who has this much attention on her. My parents are Republicans, and I’m not. They didn’t vote for Obama, but when I was asked to sign at the inauguration, they were like, ‘We can come.’ And I was like, ‘No, you can’t.’ They understood, but I was like, ‘How dare you?’ in a way.”
On her on-and-off relationship with boyfriend John Mayer: “I took a break from my boyfriend, not one that I wanted. It was like a splash of cold water to search inward on what was going on with me. That is what let me to this new awakening, this realizing, If I don’t do some self-love, I’m not going to be able to keep the love that I want. I still needed to deal with all of my ex-husband stuff. I hadn’t. It’s almost like if I kept talking about it, it would seem like I actually cared about it. I don’t.
John is so amazing “He’s just a fantastic partner. I’ve been a fan of his for such a long time. He’s got a brilliant, brilliant mind. It’s a rad, mature relationship.”

Wait, Katy wanted to try and make a Fiona Apple-esque album? Ha. Thank goodness the record label talked her out of it. Katy could never pull off a song like Fiona’s “Valentine”. Katy would sound ridiculous, and she’d also alienate her very young fanbase that is used to their idol pooping cotton candy clouds.
Oh, and the part about Russell sending Katy into a Cheetos and alcohol-fueled tailspin? Rusty isn’t listening anymore. Just wait and see what happens when John Mayer breaks up with her. Now those are going to be some epic smear interviews.

Here is Katy Perry walking the red carpet in a luxe look that screamed holiday at the 9th annual UNICEF Snowflake Ball at Cipriani Wall Street in NYC.
Her maroon Naeem Khan velvet halter dress came equipped with a matching, gold-embroidered cape that turned Katy into Super Katy!
Very pretty though I think she stole my mom’s drapes and wore them as a dress..

Katy Perry attended last night’s UNICEF Snowflake Ball wearing a shiny red halter dress and a carpet cape. This is Naeem Khan, by the way, and the entire outfit is a bit too much for even overly dramatic Katy to handle on a red carpet. The lighting is terrible here, so maybe the dress isn’t as bad as it appears in these photos. The color is very rich and gorgeous. Katy did change outfits (into a leopard-print dress that truly works) for her performance, and you can see that dress here.
Katy has just been named a goodwill ambassador for the organization, and she says the following about her first trip: “You know I was going through a transition in my life where I felt like I had been suppressed and emotionally toyed with – and like I went there, and I was like, I have nothing to compare my situation to.” Once again, everything comes back to her divorce from Russell Brand. Oh well. Katy plans to do one UNICEF trip per year, so some good will come of this. Kids love her.
Katy should have gone for a simple updo with this elaborate dress. Her makeup looks fine by Katy standards. I’m not sure what she doing with the “praying” hand gesture.
Angie Harmon let her hidden freak fly in this Angel Sanchez dress that exposed so much sideboob I thought I was looking at a lad mag. Whoa, Angie! It’s always the ones you least suspect, you know? From the front, this gown was deceptively demure with a ruffled bodice atop a flowing skirt. Then — bam! — major sideboob at an event geared towards humanitarian efforts for children. So wrong.
Christina Ricci is usually one of my favorites at any event, and she looked really great here from the waist up. There’s just too much going on here with the tri-colored bodice and a safari-print skirt. I would prefer the bodice and waist with a simpler skirt. Check out the close-up of her impeccable makeup.
Katie Couric looked fantastic in a gold dress with a mermaid train. Everything about her look is perfect.

I’m scratching my head over here a little bit. Vanity Fair has published some exclusive, schmoozy photos of John Mayer and Katy Perry. The photos are described as “their first portraits together,” which of course implies that there will be more portrait sessions in the future for these two. Will there?
Kaiser recently mentioned the in-house bet between her, CB, and myself about how long John and Katy will last. My take is that John will stick it out for a while; there will be an “engagement” (possibly around the holidays, maybe he’ll dress up like Santa again); then John will get cold feet and mercilessly dump Katy. All three of us agree that John is looking a little spooked lately when they are seen together in public. Plus he recently skipped the AMAs to go grocery shopping while Katy attended alone.
So why these photos, and why now? This next image (also taken in the VF session) provides a very telling clue — here’s the cover for their new joint single, “Who Do You Love.” This single comes from John’s latest album, not Katy’s. He has a lot to gain here:
This tells me John may care about Katy, but I think (deep down inside) he’s also using her to revamp his douchey/”ladies’ man” image and further his career. The single (you masochists can listen to it here) features lyrics like “My girl she ain’t the one that I saw coming. Sometimes I don’t know which way to go. And I try to run before but I’m not running anymore. Because I fought against it hard enough to know.” Right.
The Daily Mail sums these portraits up with an “At least they’re not riding a motorbike” like a certain other couple. Small mercies, folks. My question is this: Are Katy and John really this loved up, or is he the same douche he’s always been? I don’t think this eye of the tiger will ever change his stripes.

Katy Perry stirred up some controversy during her opening performance of “Unconditional” at last night’s American Music Awards. Katy’s theme for that night was Japanese everything. She came out in a kimono surrounded by dancing geishas, Japanese fans, cherry blossoms and all that cultural appropriation. Curiously, no tentacle rape which is a cornerstone of Japanese culture judging by all the educational sites I visit.
Anyway, some people thought this was a tad racist because all it did was combine every stereotype of Japan into one hodgepodge AMA performance.
I didn’t think it was that racist. It’s not like she was mocking the culture coming out in bucktooth and singing in a stereotypical Japanese accent. Though that would have been a far more interesting performance.

Here is Katy Perry brought a much needed shot of Hollywood glamour to the American Music Awards red carpet outside the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
“No one tweets for me. No one speaks for me. They see the authenticity, it’s not always me saying ?buy my CD, buy my music!’?that’s cheesy and desperate.”
The cleavage days are over. Now its gonna be over dressed boring outfits. Katy is gorgeous but I hate her wardrobe person.

Katy Perry brought it at the AMAs in a playful Oscar de la Renta strapless gown. I love this dress on Katy! This reminds me a lot of what she wore several years ago when she was just hitting the airwaves. The black dress is quirky but still classic with white polka dots. The embroidered flowers are whimsical and flouncy but not too obnoxious. Katy carried an Olympia Le-Tan “Webster’s New World Dictionary” box clutch. At least it wasn’t a thesaurus. Check out her polka-dotted nails!
Katy’s opening act drew a little bit of controversy because she dressed up in full geisha garb and makeup. She sang “Unconditionally,” which (coupled with this outfit) evokes the image of Madama Butterfly. Katy may not have throught this act though well enough.
For her red carpet look though, Katy was sophisticated but still young and funky. Her makeup looks pretty and not over the top like it sometimes does. And her hair? Absolutely gorgeous. She should wear it like this more often.
Kendall Jenner looked slightly uncomfortable in a white Keepsake top and skirt, but she did manage to work it for the cameras with the rear view. The dress is fine, and Kendall has the body to pull it off. She’s just a bit slouchy at this event. The sleek hair looks fantastic, and so does her makeup.
Kylie Jenner looked a dreadful mess in a Maiyet top and Giambatista Valli pants (credit to JustJared on the ID). Kylie is a cute girl, but this outfit seems like something she’d wear to the mall. I also can’t see her face because of all that shaggy hair. What a shame.
Ke$ha looks bored as hell in a black Michael Costello gown. The dress itself is quite fun with one exposed leg and a little riding crop to match. Ke$ha’s rainbow-colored hair is likewise fitting for a pop star on the red carpet. Her expression completely ruins the effect. Wake up, girl!
Nicole Richie went for a Grecian goddess look in a flowing white Emilio Pucci dress with bold cutouts on the side. The cutouts make the dress interesting from the front, but the back view is a little bit much. Actually it’s mostly Nicole’s lower back tattoo that throws things off. From the front, she looks fantastic though. This is a very fun but dramatic look with chunky statment jewelry and a fringed bag to set things off. Nic’s hair and makeup are appropriate too.
