In so many ways, Naomi Campbell is a pioneer. She was the first black model to appear on the cover of several international fashion magazines, including Vogue UK and French Vogue. At one point in the 1980s and 1990s, Naomi was one of the three highest-paid models in the world, forming one part of ?The Trinity? - which included Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista. Since the late 1990s signaled the end of the age of the supermodel, Naomi has spent the past decade still maintaining a pretty great track record with ad campaigns, runway work and print work for a model her age - she?s 39 years old in an industry where women are ?over? at the age of 25. In addition to her modeling career, she?s been involved in charitable projects in Africa, and she?s always been an outspoken advocate of more racial diversity in the fashion industry.
Of course, there are parts of Naomi that aren?t so admirable. I?ve lost count of how many people Naomi has allegedly (or not so allegedly) assaulted. Lord knows you can?t hand her a purse, a blackberry, a drink or a shoe, because she?ll just beat you with it. Last year, when Naomi got into that incident on a British Airlines flight where she basically fought with her fists and her mouth, there were many reports that claimed Naomi?s tirade included racial slurs (something about ?white slags?).
I?m bringing this up because Naomi has given another interview where she?s talking about racial diversity in the fashion industry. Naomi claims advertisers and magazines are using the recession as an excuse to drop models of color. Here?s the thing - Naomi?s got a point. But is she the best person to make the point?
Never afraid of speaking her mind, Naomi Campbell has accused the advertising business of using the recession as an excuse to drop black models.
The 39-year-old supermodel, who is a close friend of Sarah Brown, the Prime Minister’s wife, claims that major companies are refusing to use non-white women to promote their products.
“This year, we have gone back all the way that we had advanced,” she says. “I don’t see any black woman, or of any other race, in big advertising campaigns.”
Campbell, who was born in London to a mother of Caribbean descent, refers to the publication last year of a special edition of Italian Vogue dedicated to non-white models.
“That made some noise, but, unfortunately, we are the same as before,” she says. “People, in the panic of the recession, don’t dare to put a girl of colour in their campaign, full stop. Nor of any other race. It’s a shame. It’s very sad.”
The model, who is a friend of Nelson Mandela, has won support from Bruce Oldfield, the designer of the wedding dress worn by Samantha Cameron, the wife of the Tory leader.
“It’s absolutely true that black models will be not as popular for advertising companies and magazine covers as white girls,” the designer tells Mandrake. “In a recession, it’s probably doubly difficult for black girls to get a booking.”
Oldfield is thought to be the son of a Jamaican boxer, but never knew his natural parents and grew up in an orphanage. “In this climate, things are worse, but it is compounding a problem that already exists,” he adds. “Cover editors are going to choose white over black. Naomi is not far off the mark.”
In 1988, Campbell appeared on the cover of French Vogue as its first black cover girl after Yves St Laurent, her late friend and mentor, threatened to withdraw all of his advertising from the magazine following its refusal to place Campbell, or any black model, on its front page. She also became the first black model to appear on the cover of British Vogue.
Earlier this year, she described the fashion industry as “racist”. In a magazine interview, she was quoted as saying “You know, the American president may be black, but, as a black woman, I am still an exception in this business. I always have to work harder to be treated equally.”
In June, she attended the Glastonbury music festival with Gordon Brown’s wife, Sarah. The pair were promoting the Million Mums charity, which aims to help prevent women from dying needlessly in pregnancy and childbirth.

I don?t have all the facts and figures to know if all of this is technically accurate, but I suspect it is. The only black people I?ve seen on magazine covers the past year have been the Obamas - and to be fair to them, I think those Obama covers still sell really well. As for the larger issue of more racial diversity in advertising and the fashion industry as a whole - I tend to think advertisers will get smart about this stuff sooner rather than later. When someone like Tiger Woods is the highest earner in sports, just because of his advertising contracts, the sea change is coming. Speaking as a mixed-race woman, I know I appreciate it when I?m not just staring at vapid-looking blonde models on every page of Vogue. I?m still not sure if Naomi is our best spokeswoman though.

Naomi has been accused of attacking a photographer and putting him in the hospital during a holiday in Italy with her billionaire boyfriend. The photog claims: “First she hit with her bag, screaming at me, and then she tried to slap me. I managed to avoid her - but her nails still got my eye.”
Although formal charges have not been filed, it stands to reason that Naomi did assault the photographer. Like this time she assaulted a stewardess on British Airways. Or this time she scratched up her therapist. Or this time she chucked a cell phone at her housekeeper. Hey, if it looks like a duck and walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, watch out, because it might just be Naomi Campbell in a duck costume. I wouldn’t go poking it with sticks or making eye contact or anything.

It’s no secret that Naomi Campbell has quite a temper, and now it sounds like she could have landed herself in more legal drama after a recent trip to Italy.
According to a report, Miss Campbell is being accused of hitting Gaetano Di Giovani, a photographer, with her handbag and scratching her eye.
Di Giovanni told press, “I had just started to photograph her. First she hit me with her bag, screaming at me in English. Then she tried to slap me but I managed to avoid her — but her nails still got my eye. For a few seconds I could not see a thing. I could hear her bodyguards and her boyfriend trying to drag her away.”
She continued, “The hospital doctor said that I would need a few days to recover and have to go to an eye specialist. I am thinking about taking Miss Campbell to court.”

Dude, how many times is Naomi Campbell going to go postal on random people? It seems like every few months Naomi goes completely crazy and beats the hell out of someone with whatever is around. For her assistant, Naomi actually beat the woman with a bejeweled phone. I believe that fight was over a pair of jeans. Once, Naomi went totally crazy on a yacht, and caused thousands of dollars worth of damage - all because she didn?t care for the wine and appetizers. Then, last year, Naomi had a massive temper tantrum at Heathrow, assaulting and spitting on a police officer, all over one misplaced bag. Naomi has been charged and convicted of various crimes dealing with her anger issues, so it?s not like it?s all a case of mistaken identity or one rare bad day. The crazy bitch has issues, and I?m surprised we don?t hear about her tantrums more often.
The latest incident occurred in the island of Lipari, Italy. Naomi was on holiday with her boyfriend Mikhail Prokhorov when a photographer (Gaetano Di Giovanni) got within slapping distance of Naomi. According to Di Giovanni?s statements to the press, Naomi ?slapped him and hit him with her handbag? and Naomi?s ?nails had damaged his left eye?. While Di Giovanni?s vision was compromised, he could ?hear that her bodyguards and her boyfriend were trying to drag her away?. Good Lord, I would have paid to see that.

Lipari is part of the Eoliean Islands, a chain which stretches between Sicily and the mainland and is popular with celebrities.
Miss Campbell arrived on the island with Mikhail Prokhorov on his yacht after spending several days in the south of France. Last year the Streatham-born model, known for her temper, admitted attacking police at Heathrow in a row over lost luggage.

My favorite part is the image of Naomi?s bodyguards dragging her away from giving the guy an even worse beat down. Naomi is like a vampire or a rabid dog. When she smells blood, she just wants to attack even more. But still, Naomi denied the stuff even happened? could it be that this is one of those rare times when she didn?t attack anyone? My guess? Probably not. The incident fits in with Naomi?s previous behavior, so I?m buying it.

Naomi Campbell has given up alcohol, or so she says in an interview with Giant Magazine (story via Showbiz Spy). She claims that she?s in ?The Program?, which I had to look up. I think she means Alcoholics Anonymous, and/or Narcotics Anonymous. Both are 12-step programs, that may or may not be referred to as ?The Program.? Of course, an integral part of those programs is anonymity, which Naomi just broke.
Naomi also had this to say - ?Some people can handle a drink or a line of cocaine, but I’ve come to realise that, for me, it’s all or nothing - and it has to be nothing.? This is very true, if she?s a compulsive alcohol or drug binger. A binger doesn?t stop when they get their buzz, they just keep going until they pass out or die. Showbiz Spy has more:

I wonder about that comment, ?I?m not able to drink alcohol. My body cannot handle it.? I?m pretty sure Naomi is totally correct with her Program, but just a word of advice to those people who have negative physical reactions to alcohol: you might be allergic. My body can take most alcohol, except for gin. Gin makes me terribly sick, and I totally break out in a rash. Thankfully, Scotch just makes me warm, and rum just makes me happy.
Back to Naomi - does anyone think her drug and alcohol issues might have been the cause of all of her legal problems? All of that phone-throwing and phone-beating; perhaps she?s calmer now that she?s sober. Unless she was sober when she was beating people with phones, which I suspect is the case. Then she?s just unpleasant, sober or drunk.

Naomi Campbell has settled out of court with her former maid in a civil suit stemming from an alleged beating after a pair of Naomi’s designer jeans went missing. Although Campbell was arrested for assault immediately following the attack, she was never brought up on criminal charges in the incident. Gaby Gibson, who worked as Campbell’s maid for what I’m sure was a nightmarish three months, then filed a civil suit against the model in Manhattan. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but according to a statement, both sides are pleased with the outcome.
Naomi Campbell has ended her legal tussle with a former maid who accused the supermodel of hitting her and calling her names.
Terms of the settlement are confidential, but a lawyer for the 38-year-old Campbell says both sides were pleased with the outcome.
A lawyer for Gaby Gibson, who worked for Campbell from November 2005 through January 2006, didn’t immediately return a message asking for comment.
Gibson claimed in her lawsuit, filed in Manhattan, that the British catwalker also threatened to charge her with theft after being unable to find a pair of designer jeans.
Campbell denied the claims. She was never charged with any crime in the incident Gibson alleged.

Just to be clear - this is the incident in which Campbell assaulted Gibson by throwing a cell phone at her head, causing an injury that required four stitches. Not the 2000 incident in which Campbell beat up one of her personal assistants while on a Toronto film set, or the 2007 charge of assaulting a police officer at Heathrow Airport. I know - it is hard to keep up with all of Naomi’s assault charges, that’s why I’m here to help!
I do wonder how she gets away with it. She’s a supermodel, not a cage fighter. The woman has twig arms and never eats. I’d like to see her try to chuck a cell phone at MY head. I’d have that bitch in a headlock with her stupid little pug face in the dirt faster than you can say “Bulimia.” Anyway, I hope this maid got a good chunk of change for her trouble. I wonder if Naomi’s managed to hire a new maid?

Naomi Campbell has finally settled the lawsuit brought forth by her former maid, Gaby Gibson, who called her a “violent super-bigot” and alleged that she was beaten by Naomi over a pair of lost jeans. Lawyers for both sides said they were pleased with the outcome which means Naomi gave Gaby just enough money to be happy, but not enough to put a dent in her wallet. That or Naomi threatened to put her fist so far up Gaby’s ass, so help her god, that she’d be eating knuckle sandwiches for the rest of her life if Gaby ever mentioned this suit again. That bitch is crazy, although, very convincing.
