On Friday, we learned the absolutely bizarre news that Oscar-winner Tom Hooper is going to be directing a film adaptation of the musical Cats. We also learned that it would star Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson and? Taylor Swift. On the same day this film was announced, Taylor stepped out in New York in the lace-and-leopard-print ensemble you see in these photos. Do you get it? SHE?S A CAT. She?s a big cat, a leopard, or maybe a cheetah. The important thing is that whenever you see Taylor, you think ?she?s a cat, I remember now.? Anyway, this ensemble is awful. The skirt is hiked up way too high and the lace top with a sports bra underneath makes it look like she?s bizarrely wearing a flesh-colored wide belt. The shoes are struggling too. Now, all that being said, I like that Taylor is back to pap-strolling. I?ve actually missed this.
Meanwhile, did you hear about Taylor getting sued? Taylor has a game now called The Swift Life. Except The Swift Life was registered as a business name in 2007, by a small computer company business.
Taylor Swift flat-out stole her gaming app, The Swift Life so claims a tiny computer company that is going after the singer in court. SwiftLife a computer consulting company claims it owned its name since 2007, and then Taylor came along and just jacked it.
SwiftLife is a one-man company and its owner, Patrick Benot, says he was never contacted by the singer or her reps they just took it to launch the digital gaming experience app The Swift Life. Benot goes on to say Taylor and her people know full well about the ins and outs of trademarking products shes trademarked 64 items herself, so there is no excuse. Benot says her app has caused him endless grief he has an email called help@swiftlife.com and it has been flooded with people confusing his little company with Taylors gaming app.

This seems to me like a pretty open-and-shut trademark issue. If it?s handled out-of-court, it will probably involve Taylor paying this guy to go away and paying him to hand over the rights to the trademark. But if he wanted to put up a fight, he could, because he IS right: Taylor and her lawyers know all about trademarks. They?ve tried to trademark everything from Welcome to New York to ?this sick beat? and more. Weird that no one ever bothered to check the trademark on The Swift Life?

As we discussed yesterday, Taylor Swift?s Reputation tour is back in America and she?s been using her New York apartment as a homebase while she?s doing concerts in Ohio, New Jersey, etc. All of that means that we?re back to getting daily pap strolls after two years of snake silence and mist. Seriously, for a solid year or longer we were having to make do with rare, blurry Sasquatch-like sightings of Tay. But now she?s back. In short-shorts.
Wednesday?s look consisted of denim-on-denim: the shorts are Ksubi, the top is Madewell, the sneakers are Golden Goose Deluxe Brand and the sunglasses are Jimmy Choo. Altogether, I think she looks rather cute, even if I?m not a big fan of some of these pieces on their own. Like, the shorts are horrendous. The top is admittedly cute, as are the glasses. It?s also worth noting that Taylor is no longer thicc she seemed to have gained some weight in fall 2017, but it came off pretty quickly. I liked her thicc, and she looks fine here too.
What else? When Tay performed in Cleveland on Tuesday, it was the 2-year anniversary of The Day of the Receipts. Which is why Tay noted the occasion in the middle of the concert, telling the crowd, ?Happy National Snake Day, my favorite day of the year,? during a performance of ?Look What You Made Me Do.? Girl? it?s a bad look when Kim Kardashian looks like the mature one. Last thing: there are lots of tweet-rumors about Taylor possibly collaborating with Lady Gaga. Gaga and Taylor were both in New York yesterday, and Tay stopped by the same studio where Gaga has been recording. Hm.

I actually missed Taylor Swift?s regular pap strolls, which were a thing several years ago. Back during the 1989 era, Taylor lived in New York and went on near-constant strolls to showcase all of her cute outfits. Since 2016, there?s barely been any of that. But considering that no one really cares that much about Reputation-era Swifty, maybe she?s giving the people what they want: more pap strolls, more cute outfits.
Taylor stepped out in New York outside of her apartment building on Tuesday. Her tour is stateside, and she?s currently doing stadiums in Cleveland, Philadelphia, New Jersey, etc. So she?s using her New York pad as her home base. The reason why I know Taylor wants us to see her: she wore a custom romper which probably set her back a pretty penny. The romper is by Fausto Puglisi. She also wore a Kate Spade backpack, because fk it, she?s going to bring backpacks back too, Snake Fam. While you can?t see it in these photos, trust that Taylor is also wearing her ?J? pendant necklace, which is the signal that she wants us to know that she?s still with Joe Alwyn. She wasn?t wearing the necklace the other day, and rumors swirled that Joe and Tay had broken up. No. Trust that she?ll let us know when they break up.
As I mentioned yesterday, Tuesday was the two-year anniversary of Kim Kardashian dropping The Receipts. The Snake Fam decided to celebrate their Snake Queen by flooding Kim Kardashian?s social media with snake emojis (HOW ORIGINAL) and demanding that Kim ?apologize? to Taylor. Wow, Snake Fam. Still salty, huh?

As we discussed last week, Taylor Swift did NOT spend the Taymerica holiday in Rhode Island. Back in the day, Taylor would host HUGE parties for the Fourth of July at her massive Rhode Island mansion. But since the Tiddlebanging of 2016, Tay has tried to be more low-key, and thus, Taymerica was canceled. She spent this year?s Independence Day holiday on a break from her Reputation Tour, in Turks and Caicos with Joe Alwyn. Obviously, New Snake still has many of the same tricks as Old Snake, thus there were tons of photos from her vacation with Handsome Joe:

The last time I actually bought an entire album was? Adele?s 25, I think. But I did buy Sam Smith?s latest album on CD for my mom, who loves him. But generally, my music consumption is pretty limited: I just download the individual songs I want on iTunes. I don?t even bother with Spotify or Tidal or whatever. I haven?t even listened to a CD in my car for several years (I just listen to the radio, the oldies station or the urban station or NPR). Full disclosure: I still haven?t even downloaded the entirety of Beyonce?s Lemonade. I only downloaded half the album, song by song. What?s my point? My point is that the music industry has changed drastically in just the past decade, and how we consume music has changed drastically too.
Taylor Swift?s career, to a certain extent, encapsulates these changes. Taylor – along with Adele, Katy Perry, Beyonce and Rihanna – are the biggest deals in pop music today. They can sell out tours, their lives are fodder for constant gossip, their music and videos are analyzed and loved and GIF?d. But in the new music landscape, it?s getting harder and harder to simply move albums. So give it up for Taylor Swift for being the first artist in TWO YEARS to sell two million copies of her album.
Taylor Swift celebrates her sixth album to sell 2 million copies in the U.S., as Reputation reached the mark in the week ending March 15, according to Nielsen Music. The set sold another 5,000 copies that week, bringing its cumulative sum to just over the 2 million threshold. Notably, Reputation — which was released on Nov. 10, 2017 — is the only album released in the last two years to sell 2 million copies in the U.S. It launched with 1.216 million copies sold in its first week.
Previous to Reputation, the most recently released set to sell 2 million was Adele?s 25, which arrived on Nov. 20, 2015. It hit the 2 million mark after just three days and bowed with 3.38 million sold in its first week. 25 has sold 9.45 million copies through March 15.
For context, in all of 2017, only two albums sold more than a million copies: Reputation and Ed Sheeran?s (Divide). That?s a stark contrast to 10 years earlier, when 29 albums sold at least 1 million, with eight of those surpassing 2 million. Of course, the diminishing number of million-selling titles isn?t surprising. Since 2001, album sales have steadily declined each year (except for 2011). In 2017, 166.3 million total albums were sold, as compared to 500.5 million in 2007 and 790.1 million in 1997.
Swift Goes Six for Six: As for Swift, all six of her studio albums have now sold at least 2 million copies. Reputation reached the 2 million milestone in its 18th week of release. To compare, here?s a look at how fast Swift?s five earlier studio albums cleared 2 million: 1989 (three weeks), Red (five), Speak Now (six), Fearless (seven) and her self-titled debut (61).

There?s a lot to analyze in that data. By many accounts, Reputation is not Taylor?s best album. It didn?t have the breakout mega-hits like 1989 had. The videos have been kind of bad from Reputation too, right? Right. But even with a lukewarm album – lukewarm for Tay – she still managed to sell 2 million copies, it just took her 15 weeks. Whereas it only took 3 weeks for 1989 to sell 2 million. What does that say about Taylor, what does that say about the music industry and what does that say about Reputation as an album?
(Also HELLO Adele sold nearly 10 million copies of 25 in roughly the same amount of time it took Tay?s Reputation to only go double-platinum. Maybe it?s Adele, not Taylor, saving the music industry.)

I thought she was spending so much time undercover in London with Joe, doing Sunday roasts with the Alwyn family and only going out with various wigs? Guess not. I absolutely loathe stories about copyrights and copyright lawsuits. On one side, most of the lawsuits are pretty junky and they deserve to be thrown out. On the other side, when there is a rare valid copyright dispute, it takes forever to actually come to any kind of conclusion. On a gossip level, it?s like watching paint dry. Taylor Swift has been involved with an unknown number of copyright disputes, some lawsuits or copyright-infringement notices which she served to people in which she claimed were copying her lyrics or music. She?s also been accused of infringing on other artists? copyrights. Songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler sued her last year because they claimed her song lyrics in ?Shake It Off? infringed on their lyrical copyright from the song ?Playas Gon? Play.? Hall and Butler did not win their suit, but at least the whole incident did provide us with some excellent judge-shade.
Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald has dismissed a copyright lawsuit against Taylor Swift for her 1989 track, ?Shake It Off?. In his ruling, Judge Fitzgerald delivered pointed criticism about the song while ruling that the lyrics she allegedly stole from the 3LW?s 2001 hit ?Playas Gon? Play? were too ?banal? to be entitled to protection. Songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler sued Swift last year, claiming her song stole their lyrics, ?Playas, they gonna play/ And haters, they gonna hate.? On the chorus of ?Shake It Off?, Swift sings, ?Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play/ And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate (haters gonna hate).?
Although short phrases are historically immune from copyright claims, Hall and Butler argued that their lyrics were ?sufficiently creative? enough to warrant protection. Judge Fitzgerald disagreed, ruling that ?the allegedly infringed lyrics are short phrases that lack the modicum of originality and creativity required for copyright protection.? He added that ?players, haters, and player haters? were already ingrained in American pop culture by 2001.
Here?s the specific quote from Fitzgerald?s ruling: ?In the early 2000s, popular culture was adequately suffused with the concepts of players and haters to render the phrases ?playas? gonna play? or ?haters? gonna hate?, standing on their own, no more creative than ?runners gonna run?; ?drummers gonna drum?; or ?swimmers gonna swim.? The concept of actors acting in accordance with their essential nature is not at all creative; it is banal. The allegedly infringed lyrics are short phrases that lack the modicum of originality and creativity required for copyright protection.?

?Banal? is a great word. We should use it more, because so much of pop culture is banal. Taylor Swift is lyrically banal. This lawsuit was a legal banality. But the whole thing has probably given Taylor some more ?ideas? for future lyrics: swimmers gonna swim, drummers gonna drum, idiots gonna idiot, smarmers gonna smarm, lovers gonna love, geese gonna fly, and on and on.
