“American Idol” alum Katharine McPhee is the cover girl of “Shape” magazine. The standard “bikini while standing in a pool of water” pose was her choice, and she looks great - bleach job aside. Honestly, the best thing this girl had going for her was her long, beautiful chestnut hair, and now she’s hacked it off and bleached it blond. Why? Anyway, Katharine talks about her 7-year battle with bulimia in the issue, and also how she is dealing with ongoing depression with the help of a support group.
Katharine McPhee opens up about her 7-year battle with bulimia in the February issue of Shape magazine.
“The more I focused on my weight, the worse my bulimia got,” says the American Idol runner-up, 25. “Now I’m more easygoing. I stopped fighting myself and became more forgiving of my body. Ironically, the weight came off naturally through exercise but no dieting.”
McPhee says she no longer pays attention to how many pounds she weighs.
“At my last physical, the nurse took my vitals and said, ‘Wow, you must be taking care of yourself! Your blood pressure is perfect. You’re very healthy,’” she says. “Hearing her say that made me feel better then seeing an ‘ideal’ number on the scale.”
While she’s adapting a healthier body image, McPhee still battles depression.
“I’ve tried writing down affirmations, but that doesn’t work for me,” she explains. Every Monday, she attends a women’s group meeting organized by her church where everyone reveals their highs and lows of the week.
“This exercise is so cool because it allows me to reflect on where I am in my life, and also to hear what others are going through,” she says. “When we’re done, I feel more connected to the world and not so lonely. It’s the best way to start my week.”

It sounds like Katharine is in a happy place these days, although I have to wonder how she kept her issues hidden when she was on TV every week during “Idol.” She always seemed so happy and upbeat, and she looked great. One would have never imagined she was dealing with an eating disorder and depression at the time. Nothing against Katharine, but I always considered that particular season of the show a big joke, with that “Soul Patrol” guy winning. What was his name?

Bundled up for the chilly temperatures in New York City, Katherine McPhee was spotted arriving at a Manhattan hotel on Wednesday morning (January 6).
The “American Idol” alum graciously waved to the on-hand photogs and stopped to greet some lucky fans before heading inside to her posh Big Apple digs.
Last year, Ms McPhee opted for a new look by going from brunette to blonde, and according to our friends at FOXnews.com, the singer has no interest in hearing what “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell has to say about it.
Katherine tells, “He hasn’t seen it yet and [I] wouldn’t really value or want to know his opinion about hair.”

Taking care of some promotional duties, Katharine McPhee made an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” last night (January 4).
The “American Idol” alum looked lovely as she sang a selection from her brand new album titled Unbroken, sporting a cleavage-baring black top with black stretch pants and black heels.
And though she is definitely blessed to have a loyal fan base, it seems the critics aren’t too fond of Ms. McPhee’s latest effort.
One review reads, “She can really sing; she just needs more distinctive material than she’s come up with here,” while another laments, “The American Idol fifth-season runner-up ... once again offers a bland, forgettable collection of sweet, soft numbers that lack distinct personality.”

Not shy when it comes to her wardrobe choices, Katharine McPhee was all about the sheer ensemble as she stepped out in Los Angeles on Saturday night (December 19).
The “American Idol” alum was decked out in a midriff baring see through shirt, which revealed a white bra paired with studded leggings and a grey vest.
Over the holiday season, Miss McPhee has been busy making promotional stops as she readies for the release of a new album, attending the City of Hope’s “12 Stops of Christmas” earlier in the week.
She’s also currently lined up to appear on the Larry King Christmas Special on CNN, which will be taped on December 23rd.

Always up for a charitable outing, Katharine McPhee stepped out for the City of Hope’s “12 Stops of Christmas” at Hollywood and Highland in Hollywood on Wednesday (December 16).
The “American Idol” alum was in quite the cheerful mood, smiling away as she got a haircut from a dressed-up Edward Scissorhands.
Miss McPhee proceeded on to take a seat in a set-up booth, signing autographs and handing out free CD’s to the crowd of assembled fans on-hand.
Meanwhile, Katharine is currently lined up to appear on the Larry King Christmas Special on CNN, which will be taped on December 23rd.

Getting into the holiday spirit, Katharine McPhee was among the stars on hand for the 83rd Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City on Thursday (November 26).
The “American Idol” alum looked seasonably fashionable as she posed for a few pictures, also taking the stage to perform the song “Had it All” during the day’s festivities.
From here, Katharine is headed back out west for a much-needed break, telling FOX 411, “I hope to get some rest and a bit of quiet time with my family. I don’t want to do anything too crazy, but we may plan a quick ski trip.”
Then it’s time to go promoting, as Miss McPhee continues, “It’s a cuckoo time in my life with my new record coming out on January 5th. I’m traveling so much and I can’t fully relax because I have band rehearsals. It’s that time leading up to the first week of record release - totally crazy and exciting. I am planning on performing in L.A. and then also doing some shows in New York.”
