He's one of Hollywood's most recognized actors, so it comes as no surprise that Johnny Depp is stingy when it comes to choosing his next role.
Sources told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday (May 30) that the "Dark Shadows" actor parted from Barry Levinson's upcoming flick "Black Mass" after rejecting their salary offer.
The production was set to pay him $20 million, but due to low sales at this year's Cannes Film Festival, the budget was cut down to $65 million dollars. In turn, the crew asked Johnny is he would accept $10 million for the role.
Unfortunately, Johnny's reps at UTA refused the offer and backed out of the project. UTA has no comment on the matter at this time.
Meanwhile, Johnny is wrapping up his latest sci-fi project "Transcendence" and preparing for the premiere of his upcoming film "The Long Ranger" slated to hit theaters July 3rd.

Let me start off by admitting that I’ve developed quite a nasty little habit of giving the side eye to Johnny Depp, and perhaps things have grown a little too critical on my end. Most recently, I’ve given Johnny a hard time for obsessing over his food’s sugar, salt, and fat content while he chain smokes. There’s also the question of him as a 49-year-old man who’s made a fool of himself over a 20-something, big-chested blonde. I also think it’s quite strange that he intentionally goes to a lot of effort to ugly himself up by dressing in so many scarfs and layers, but I guess that’s just Johnny’s “style.” I mean, the dude accessorizes like no other, and he goes way overboard at times.
Now I feel the need to not exactly backtrack (because that would be lame) but to take a moment and acknowledge that Johnny has done something pretty cool. By all accounts and even though Johnny has truly transformed from indie rebel to complete Hollywood franchise sellout and also has the nerve to compare photo shoots to rape, every fan who has ever met the guy (including waiters and schoolchildren) says that he’s a really nice dude. Then there is this new story about Johnny setting up some homeless guys with jobs as extras on his new film set:
He is known for playing dark and complex characters on the big screen but Johnny Depp has shown off his softer side after hiring homeless people to play extras in his latest movie.
The 49-year-old Hollywood actor reportedly convinced the casting director of his forthcoming film, Transcendence, to employ two street sleepers after he spotted them in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
“Johnny always likes to help out the community when on location,” a source told The Sun. “While scouting out the area around Albuquerque, he came across these two characters. He was straight on the phone to the casting director.”
Depp stars opposite Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy and Rebecca Hall as Will in the sci-fi thriller. It is set to be released in cinemas in April 2014.
It is not the first time the Pirates of the Caribbean actor has helped the homeless. In 2011, he bought a hat from a person living on the streets to add to his vast collection of headgear.
However, the purchase is said to have put him in the doghouse with his partner at the time, Vanessa Paradis. “Vanessa was livid and told him the hats had to go or she would trash them,” an insider previously said. “But he’s way too fond of them, so he’ll move the bulk of the collection to one of their other homes.”

That last little tidbit is interesting, isn’t it? There’s a strange implication that Vanessa just had a major problem with Johnny’s hats, and that’s why their relationship must have crumbled. How silly. Anyway, good on Johnny. I won’t pick on him any more today … except to say that now I understand this particular hat.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are still at it, people. They made their official couple debut a few weeks ago at a Rolling Stones concert, and now they’ve been spotted dining out (Italian!) with the Stones on Wednesday evening in West Hollywood. You can see pictures here — Johnny has changed up his scarves quite a bit.
Speaking of Johnny dining out, a little story in this week’s Enquirer says that Mr. Patchouli is super finicky as to how his food is prepared in restaurants. Like, he’s totally annoying about it. He supposedly interrogates his waiters on the nutritional content of food and acts like he really cares about what goes into his body — and then while waiting for the food, he runs outside and chain smokes like a fiend. What a dork:
On-again, off-again vegan Johnny Depp sampled West Hollywood’s new vegan eatery Crossroads with pals and relentlessly quizzed his waiter for nearly 10 minutes, demanding to know (1) how much sugar, fat, and salt was in each dish that interested him, (2) were there any “secret” ingredients not listed — and (3) exactly how would the food be prepared. My SpyWitness reports that after everyone at the table finally got to put in their orders, Depp quickly nipped outside and … hack, cough! … grabbed a quick cigarette! (To your health, Johnny Boy!)

Honestly, I don’t know what to do with this. What else is there to say in this instance except that Johnny might very well eat healthily, but none of that will matter if he ends up with lung cancer from inhaling a few packs per day. Oh well, I guess we’re all a little weird about something. Johnny just happens to be weird about food and spending a ton of money on raggedy clothes to make himself look like a hobo.

Amping up fans' anticipation for it's July release, Walt Disney Picture released a new trailer for "The Lone Ranger" on Tuesday (May 21).
In the adventure/action flick, Native American warrior Tonto recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid, a man of the law, into a legend of justice.
Starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer, the movie will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer while Gore Verbinski handle the director's role.
"The Lone Ranger" is set to open in theaters on July 3rd but you can check out the trailer in the player below now!

These are some photos of Johnny Depp taking a quick coffee and cigarette break while filming Transcendence in Los Angeles. The first thing I noticed from these photos is that Johnny is sort of back to looking like his “old” self again. We already posted a “from behind” shot of Johnny a few weeks ago on the same film set, but now we’re getting a good look at what’s going on in front. And it’s not that bad, is it? He’s not all scarfy and messy like he would prefer to be in everyday life, but Johnny got paid some “stupid money” (that’s his very favorite kind of dinero) to get a haircut and shave, so he’s appeased the power of the purse.
Honestly, I don’t know if I would hit it. Back in the day, Johnny was FINE. I’m speaking of the years where he was dating Winona Ryder and Kate Moss, and of course, he was a total mess, but I would have hit that throbbing mess hard. Over the past decade though, Johnny has lost his former appeal. He didn’t just sell out like any other actor — he went seriously Disney. Now the dude owns his own island, and even his general demeanor has faded into a clich of dating young, big-busted blondes instead of making it work with the mother of his children. In light of what we now know of Johnny’s character, he’s just not that attractive anymore. I guess I’m saying that even him throwing televisions out of his hotel window didn’t put me off his scent, but his recent douchey (likely cheating) behavior has done just that. Plus, the cigarette is a total deal breaker. Would you still hit it?

Taking a break between scenes, Johnny Depp enjoyed a hot beverage on the set of "Transcendence" in Los Angeles on Saturday (May 11).
The "Lone Ranger" star wore a dark sweater, black blazer, and gray pants with his shades as he headed out in the sunny streets.
In the sci-fi flick, two leading computer scientists work toward their goal of Technological Singularity, as a radical anti-technology organization fights to prevent them from creating a world where computers can transcend the abilities of the human brain.
Directed by Wally Pfister, the film also stars Rebecca Hall, Morgan Freeman, Paul Bettany, Kate Mara, and Cillian Murphy.

Johnny Depp was on the Late Show last night and I would have done this post sooner, but I decided to watch Hugh Jackman’s appearance from Wednesday night first and I got distracted imagining what I would do to him. (CBS puts the episodes online but it takes forever to watch them as the commercials are excessive.)
I won’t go into the details that are crowding my mind, but Johnny no longer has that immediate effect on me. (That’s not to say I would turn him down! It would be the highlight of my life.) Lately he’s looking more like a parody of his former self. Just check out this goofy long thin scarf he’s paired with pants that are cut up and hanging on the ground. Would it kill him to polish his boots? On the show he wore a ton of stacked necklaces, a shirt hanging off the back of his pants and plenty of rings. Johnny loves his accessories.
Johnny was on the Late Show doing a favor for an old musician friend, Bill Carter, with whom he performed after giving an interview. (Here’s a link to a clip of Johnny and Bill’s interview.) He was also promoting Lone Ranger, but it’s not out until July, damnit. Johnny explained that he’d met Bill and his wife in Atlanta back when he was filming Gilbert Grape (early 90s!) and that he’d actually lived with them for a few months afterwards. It was a really nice story and I was impressed at what a loyal friend he is.
Johnny’s voice was gruffer than usual as he talked about his past as a musician, saying he’d played with a band called “The Kids” and that they’d opened for The Pretenders, Billy Idol and The Ramones. He looked tired and was thinner than we’ve seen him recently.
As for how his film career started, Johnny said that his buddy Nicolas Cage sent him to his agent to read for Nightmare on Elm Street, the first one, and the rest was history. When Letterman complimented him that his movies were huge successes, Johnny quipped “it’s got nothing to do with me I don’t think” I take it back, he’s starting to do it for me again! It just took me a while to warm up to him this time. Johnny, come back to us, we still love you!
There’s a clip of Johnny Depp performing, he plays backup guitar, over at E! Online! Oh and he also told a story about falling off a horse while filming Lone Ranger. You can read that on E! if you’re interested. I think he’s going to work his way back into our good graces, I really do. I can’t stay mad at him even if he does dress like this.

I continue to be surprised by the fact that all of the tabloids ? save for People Mag, I guess ? are running stories about Amber Heard and Johnny Depp and how they?re either back on or how they never even split up. I?ve said before, and I still believe: I think Depp and Heard really did take a break over the summer and only recently got back in touch and started something up again. I think they both realized they were getting bad press with their ?out of nowhere? intensity and romance, so they decided to cool it down and return for more later. Later happened, and now they?re going strong? Perhaps. Last week, the tabs claimed that Johnny was ?blinded by love? for crazy hippie-dippy free spirit bisexual Amber, and this week Us Weekly is saying that Johnny has even TOLD Amber that he loves her. *clutches multiple scarves*

After arriving at 11 p.m., the twosome ? who kicked off a romance in late 2011 during their Rum Diary press tour ? settled in on the patio, where, a witness says, they sipped nonalcoholic beers sitting side by side.
?They were flirty and engaged,? says the source. And their affection was no act.
Another insider says the actress, 26, ?was telling people they were officially together? at a Gucci party October 27. (Depp, 49, and Vanessa Paradis, 39, split in June 2012 after separating in 2010.)
A pal says the Lone Ranger star is serious about the starlet: ?They have said ?I love you.? ?

So, do you believe that Amber and Johnny are ?in love? or as close to that as they can get? Sure. I?ll buy that. I think they?re pretty much together at this point, but it will be interesting to see how they play it ? will there be a late-night photo-op exiting some club? Or will Johnny officially debut his new girl on a red carpet?

Johnny Depp is 49 years old, and he’s definitely starting to look his age. While it’s true that we all get older and lose our (presumably good) looks at a certain age, it certainly seems like a sudden deterioration for Johnny in recent days. Of course, I’ve been secretly theorizing that Johnny’s been on the downswing for the better part of the past decade, and nobody has noticed the issue onscreen because he’s been wearing wacky costumes in his movies for so long. Then Johnny was actually required to wear normal dude clothing for The Tourist, and he looked like crap. Obviously, it’s hard to tell what anyone looks like underneath that Jack Sparrow costume with its eyeliner, dreads, and pirate teeth, and Johnny’s been using that fact to his advantage.
I also remain convinced that if Johnny gave himself a good scrubbing (he looks so grubby in his civilian gear) and lost those bloody scarves, he’d probably instantly lose a few years in appearance. Johnny, however, allegedly believes that if he stops boozing so much, he’ll retain his youthful glow. That also makes sense, but since he’s been a hard boozer for decades, is it too late to undo the damage? Here’s the story from this week’s Star:
He boasts his very own vineyard in France and a world-class wine cellar, but Johnny Depp is giving up his drink of choice and going on the wagon in hopes of preserving his famous good looks. “Johnny’s tried to quit drinking before, but this time he is really serious,” his friend tells Star. “He even gave a pal six of his most expensive bottles!”
Johnny so loves drinking that he sports a “Wino Forever” tattoo on his arm to cover up his “Winona Forever” ink — but he is now changing his priorities. “Booze is really drying and aging to the skin — Johnny’s lucky to have good genes, but he knows his looks are his meal ticket.”

No more “Wino Forever”? What an end to an era. As for Johnny’s fear that he’ll lose his “meal ticket” if his looks go … well, look at what happened to Marlon Brando, and people still hired him. Maybe Marlon didn’t get the really high-paying gigs towards the end of his life, but he certainly wasn’t going hungry. In any case, Johnny should take a good look at Keith Richards, for this is his future.

These are some new photos of Johnny Depp at the Toronto Film Festival, where he?s promoting the documentary West of Memphis. West of Memphis is about the West Memphis Three, a cause that Johnny was associated with for many years (the West Memphis Three are now out of prison). From what I can see, Johnny isn?t officially associated with the film ? like, he?s not a producer and he didn?t narrate the documentary or anything. He?s just friends with everyone involved, so he came to Toronto to help the documentary. With scarves and necklaces!!! Yes, I?m not going to wade into the politics of the film (I?m including Vanity Fair?s coverage below), but I will discuss Johnny?s general appearance. MY GOD! Enough with the jewelry and scarves, dude. We get it. You love a good neckerchief. Now take a shower.
Even though he does not have a film in this year’s festival, Johnny Depp still flew into Toronto this weekend to support his friend, Damien Echols. Echols is a member of the so-called ?West Memphis Three,? the subject of Amy Berg’s gripping documentary West of Memphis. ?I don?t think of myself as a celebrity,? Depp told reporters at a press conference on Saturday. ?I?m here as a friend. If there are people out there who will take a minute to listen to what I have to say, or what these guys have to say, they will learn a lot more about this case.?
The ?case” he’s talking about is the 1994 conviction and life sentences imparted on Echols (then 18 years old), Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley, for the grisly 1993 murder of three small boys in Arkansas. At the time Echols was an authority-bucking loner who preferred long hair and trench coats, and the documentary suggests he was an easy target for police during a slipshod investigation. He was put on death row after a trial conducted by ambitious prosecutors critics claim were focused on securing a significant conviction to further their own careers.
After several years in prison, Echols’ prison pen pal-turned-wife, Lorri Davis quit her job and committed herself full-time to freeing her husband. Her efforts drew attention from Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, and his wife, Fran Walsh, who largely funded the reinvestigation and court appeals, and also produced West of Memphis. Over time, Johnny Depp and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder heard of the case, visited Echols in prison, became friends, and organized a 2010 benefit concert to call attention to the West Memphis Three.
After discovering new forensic and DNA evidence in 2007, the Arkansas Supreme Court eventually overturned the initial ruling in 2010. A year later, the State of Arkansas agreed to accept an Alford plea?a complicated plea deal in which a defendants asserts he or she is innocent while conceding that there is sufficient evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt?and freed the trio after eighteen years in prison. Depp revealed that he and Echols celebrated the long-awaited release from prison over tater tots and tacos. ?To finally see Damien arrive at my house, on my doorstep, was quite, you know, moving. It was a celebration, it was beautiful.” After the meal, Depp and Echols commemorated the milestone by getting matching tattoos.
Although the West Memphis Three are technically free, they still have yet to clear their names in the court system. With long black hair, wearing sunglasses and all black clothing (just like Depp) Echols told press that even crossing the Canadian border was difficult considering his history.
?The U.S. still shows I have three counts of murder on my record,? said Echols. ?I had to go through extraordinary measures that others don?t.? Appearing via Skype, Peter Jackson revealed the filmmakers may append the film with advancements in Echols’ quest for exoneration, telling reporters, ?Certainly the story’s not finished.”

Tater tots and tacos? Dirty hipsters. No, I get it. Well, I get the tater tot thing, I guess. Have you ever some really good tots? Man, I could go for some tots right now. As for Johnny?s matching ink and all of that? I have to give Johnny some credit, actually. He was involved with the West Memphis Three activism and ?cause? when it was barely a cause clbre, and he stuck with it and saw it to its conclusion (sort of, although I?m sure there?s more to come). I wish more celebrities took the long view of political activism. Meanwhile, I?m still waiting to see if imprisoned environmental activist Tim DeChristopher becomes a ?hip? celebrity cause. He should.
