James Franco is on one of Entertainment Weekly?s Oscar Preview covers - not only because he?s one of the Oscar hosts this year, but because he?s likely going to be an Oscar contender, for 127 Hours. My opinion of Franco has drastically changed over the course of the past year. I started out really liking him, and then at some point, I just started finding him exhausting. He pisses me off - he?s a wonderful actor, one of the best of his generation, and he pisses it away too often in his attempts to be Too Much. He?s not just Franco The Actor. He wants to be Franco The Writer, Franco The Artist, Franco The Provocateur. Eh. He?s not provocative, he just seems like an emo teenager with ?so much to say? only his poetry reads like lyrics from The Cure, you know? And Franco?s writing sucks. Whatever.
But still, I have lingering attatchment to Franco, because I keep hoping he grows out of the ?Dirtlip As Performance Art? phase. And interviews like this EW piece certainly help - James talks about sexuality, identity politics and performance with a lot of depth and authenticity here:
?Is James Franco gay?? is a favorite query of the pop-cultural chattering classes. It?s not like it?s unique to him: Having the public ponder your sexuality is a celebrity rite of passage. But the thing that makes Franco?s case so interesting is that, unlike the loud denials from some stars and even louder silences from others, the response from the 127 Hours star (who, for the record, has been in a years-long relationship with actress Ahna O?Reilly) is actually pretty nuanced. Franco addressed the rumor-mill mentality in an exclusive interview with EW for our recent cover story.
?It?s funny because the way that kind of stuff is talked about on blogs is so black-and-white,? Franco says. ?It?s all cut-and-dry identity politics. ?Is he straight or is he gay?? Or, ?This is your third gay movie ? come out already!? And all based on, gay or straight, based on the idea that your object of affection decides your sexuality.?
The actor definitely doesn?t let the speculation inhibit his choice of roles; Franco?s filmography is packed with gay characters, from Allen Ginsberg in Howl, to activist Scott Smith in Milk and poet Hart Crane in his just-wrapped feature The Broken Tower.
?There are lots of other reasons to be interested in gay characters than wanting myself to go out and have sex with guys,? he says. ?And there are also lots of other aspects about these characters that I?m interested in, in addition to their sexuality. So, in some ways it?s coincidental, in other ways it?s not. I mean, I?ve played a gay man who?s living in the ?60s and ?70s, a gay man who we depicted in the ?50s, and one being in the ?20s. And those were all periods when to be gay, at least being gay in public, was much more difficult. Part of what I?m interested in is how these people who were living anti-normative lifestyles contended with opposition. Or, you know what, maybe I?m just gay.?

Not a denial, not a confirmation, but a genuine conversation about being a straight actor drawn to playing gay men. It would be wonderful to see someone like Tom Cruise or John Travolta talk about performance and sexuality like this. But they won?t. See - Franco is a wonderful actor. Why all of the extra drama and dumb ?art? stuff? Just be a great actor.

Katie Holmes turned 32 years old on Saturday. Thirsty-two? going on a hard 40-something due to excessive Xenu and medication. Anyway, Tom Cruise managed to pry himself away from Jeremy Renner and Josh Holloway on the Canadian set of Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol (twitch) to fly down to New York to treat his girls to some family time. On Friday, Tom took Suri and Katie to see The Nutcracker, and they even got to pose with some of the ballerinas (cute pics here). Then, Tom took Katie out for two birthday dinners on Saturday and Sunday night. These photos are from last night - I guess Katie didn?t feel like wearing makeup for dinner??
Katie Holmes, having a romantic 32nd birthday dinner with hubby Tom Cruise at ABC Kitchen in New York City. The couple was casually dressed ? he wore jeans and she was in a lacy top ? and very affectionate at their late-night meal. According to an observer, the two were very cozy at their table, laughing and enjoying themselves. Earlier in the weekend, the two took daughter Suri to see the New York City Ballet’s Nutcracker ? and the family headed backstage, where Suri got to meet the dancers and pose for pictures.

So Tom got to spend some time with his girls? good for him. There was some speculation in last week?s Star Magazine that Tom and Katie are having marriage problems yet again, so this weekend came at a convenient time. Tom and Katie haven?t been spending a lot of time together, though. She?s been filming in LA, he?s been in Europe and Canada - Tom goes weeks without seeing his wife and daughter. God knows what he does in that time. Shops for lifts?

Continuing to enjoy their Big Apple surroundings, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were spotted out to dinner with their daughter Suri last night (December 19).
The ?Mad Money? mommy and the ?Minority Report? papa escorted their little girl to Il Cantinori for some delicious Italian eats.
Tom and Katie have been all over Manhattan this past weekend, making the most of Holmes? 32nd birthday.
Among the stops on their schedule were the ABC Kitchen, Gemma in the Bowery Hotel, and SoulCycle fitness center.

Ready for a celebratory night on the town, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise were spotted heading out of their New York City abode on Saturday evening (December 18).
The lovely couple both looked in high spirits as they geared up to celebrate Katie's 32nd birthday with a romantic dinner date.
Prior to the Big Apple meal on the town, TomKat made their way over to SoulCycle for an intense workout session - after which both exited the local gym soaked in sweat.
Tom and Katie arrived in NYC earlier in the morning with daughter Suri after having been situated in Vancouver, Canada as Cruise worked on his new movie "Mission: Impossible IV".

Making their way back to the States, Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and Suri were spotted arriving in New York City on Saturday morning (December 18).
With the "Top Gun" stud toting his little angel in his arms, the trio hopped out of their chauffeured ride following the long flight from Vancouver, Canada.
The trip to the Big Apple comes as Miss Holmes just so happens to be ringing in her 32nd birthday today.
As for their time north of the border, Katie took Suri to visit papa Tom in the Vancouver locale as he continued filming his upcoming action flick "Mission: Impossible IV".

It?s no secret that celebrities are targeted by erroneous rumors every day. And the latest reports of a rift between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are absolutely bogus.
Star magazine tried to pawn off a ?Christmas Split? story by claiming ?Fed-Up Katie Leaving Tom.? But their rep says it?s completely made-up.
Furthermore, Star said, ?They have been living separate lives in recent months. Katie is so lonely she probably forgets what it?s like to be happy.?
?The report is absolutely false,? said the rep to Gossip Cop, adding that the only ?leaving? going on is Katie spending some time in her hometown of Toledo, Ohio later this month.

These are new photos of Tom Cruise filming Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol (I’m not making up that name) in Vancouver on Monday. Tom and the cast and crew were in Prague, if you remember, for several months. Josh Holloway was around, and Tommy and Jeremy Renner were getting all wet for each other. So? Tom was wandering around in a wife-beater in Vancouver, just chilling out, showing off his guns. When we last saw Tom shirtless a few months ago, I swear to God, his arms did not look like this. Of course, a few months ago I was mesmerized by lovely lady lumps? on his stomach. So I wasn?t looking at his arms. But I still think Tom has spent the past two months doing A LOT of weight training. And I?ll just say it: his arms looks GOOD. They do, y?all. He?s almost 50 years old, and I?m pleasantly surprised that he still cares enough to make this kind of physical transformation for a role.
Anyway, enjoy these photos, because God knows when we?ll get more. LaineyGossip has been keeping her eye on Tom Cruise?s mysterious movements while filming in Canada - according to Lainey, Tom has been keeping a super-low profile, and he is very difficult to nail down at any specific location. God knows what he does with his time? I mean, I literally can?t imagine. What does Tom Cruise do to relax after a hard day of filming? A little auditing, maybe a massage from a lithe young blonde? I?m keeping it gender neutral on purpose!

What, oh what shall we do when Oprah Winfrey ends her talk show to start her TV network? Who will tell us what to read? Where will Julia Roberts promote her movies based on Oprah’s book club choices? Whose couch will Tom Cruise jump on?
Some of you younger readers have never known a world without Oprah. Her talk show has been on for 25 years.
Never fear. Oprah has chosen her successor, and it’s Ellen DeGeneres.
You know it’s serious when somebody besides Oprah appears on the cover of “O” magazine. Ellen was the second woman to achieve that feat. Michelle Obama was the first.
Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres have become Hollywood’s newest BFFs!
Oprah will be wrapping up production of her long-running show after 25 years and launching her OWN network in Los Angeles in January. And she’s now ready to “pass the talk-show queen torch” to Ellen, said a source.
The Enquirer has learned the women recently shared an intimate dinner — Ellen bringing along wife Portia de Rossi and Oprah with her closest friend, Gayle King.
“They’ve always been fond of each other, but Oprah sees Ellen as her successor. She’s wanted to personally give Ellen advice on turning herself into a worldwide media brand,” explained the source.
After spending a great deal of time communicating via phone and e-mail, Ellen invited Oprah and Gayle to join her and Portia at their Los Angeles home for a gourmet vegan dinner.
“At the intimate gathering, Oprah gave Ellen advice on how to carry on with her upbeat, heartfelt approach to TV talk,” explained the source.
Meanwhile, Gayle and Portia chatted in another room, according to the source.
The four have become fast friends. Ellen, 52, became the second woman — after Michelle Obama — to ever appear on the cover of “O” magazine with Oprah in December 2009. And Portia, 37, recently appeared on Oprah’s show to discuss her autobiography, Unbearable Lightness, which chronicles her battle with anorexia and coming to terms with her sexuality.
But the get-together nearly never happened — after Oprah, 56, kept her hosts waiting for more than an hour, explaining that she’d been stuck in traffic.
According to the source, Ellen joked: “You’re an L.A. girl now — get used to it!”

It’s interesting that Enquirer portrays this as a big happy girls’ club, even using the word “intimate” twice, so soon after Oprah’s recent teary admission that she’s not a lesbian.
I’m just relieved Oprah didn’t choose Dr. Phil to be the new talk-show queen, but I wager Rosie O’Donnell is not at all happy.

He?s been hard at work on the latest ?Mission: Impossible? as of late, and Tom Cruise has just announced the name of the upcoming film.
On Thursday (October 28), the ?Knight and Day? actor attended the Doha Film Festival and revealed that his newest offering will be dubbed ?Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol.?
"One of the things I always wanted for the franchise was for it not to have a number afterwards," Cruise said. "I?ve never done sequels to films and I never thought of these films as sequels.?
Continuing on, Tom said, ?Paramount has done a great job in coming up with a title, so it?s not going to be MI 2, 3, 4: It?s going to be ?Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol.?
