I?ve spent the past decade not thinking much about Matthew McConaughey. I thought he was a relatively harmless hippie, playing his bongo drums, getting high and doing dumb romantic comedies. I thought of him the same way I think of Kate Hudson ? harmless, kind of fun, not evil, not horrible people. They don?t whine, they?re not playing the victim, they?re just maintaining and not really challenging anybody or anything. But somewhere along the line in the past year or two, Matthew?s do-no-harm trajectory changed for the better. Matthew started signing on for meatier character work and ?important? films. And what?s even more surprising is that he?s turning in great, critically acclaimed, award-winning performances nowadays.
2013 is The Year of Cumberbatch, of course, and The Year of McAvoy? but is it also The Year of McConaughey? He?s got Dallas Buyer?s Club coming out later this year, and I feel strongly that he will be an Oscar contender. He?s also got a supporting part in The Wolf of Wall Street, a prestige film directed by Martin Scorsese starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill. And MM has an interesting little film called Mud, which comes out soon. He plays a ?lovesick fugitive who charms two kids into helping him get a boat out of a tree to save his girl (Reese Witherspoon) from some baddies.? That?s why he scored the cover of Details ? he?s promoting Mud. The whole interview is pretty good (he?s SO laidback). Here are some highlights:
His family changed his career: “I never said, ‘Oh, I want to go do darker or edgier stuff,’ I just said, ‘I’m going to take some time off. I have to take care of my family right now. We’ve got the means in the bank account, we’ve got a roof over our head, we’re gonna eat well, we’re fine. So let’s take some introspective time.’ It wasn’t a mini-retirement. It was just that I wanted to listen to myself and be a bit more discerning.”
On the endless rom-coms he was doing: “I enjoyed what I was doing, but I felt like I did it last time and I can do it again tomorrow. I just wanted to shake in my boots a little bit. I want to go deal with some real consequence in films. I remember writing this down: ‘I want to be able to hang my hat on the humanity of the character every day.’”
His family comes with him on location: “Papa goes to work, the circus goes with him,” he says, pleased.
On Camila Alves: “I’ve got a wife who challenges me. There were two movies I wanted to do last year, but they were back-to-back with no separation. She was like, ‘You want to do it?buck up, grab your nuts, and make it happen. We’ll be there with you.’”
Jennifer Garner loves him: “He is who he is, no matter what the project?friendly, funny, and focused. But he was on another plane altogether making [Dallas Buyer?s Club]. I’m not sure if Matthew has changed from fatherhood, marriage, or just regular growing up?but he was more vulnerable and also more scary this time around.”
How he?s changed: “I’m not asking for permission to come in anymore. How do I say that the right way? ‘Cause you could take this and make me look like a real a–hole. I’m just as thankful now as I ever was. But I’m choosing to be more selfish. I remember feeling not sure about what I wanted to do and feeling?I’m not sure despondent is the right word, but a feeling like things are plateauing. I wanted more evolution. I want to feel ascension in the grade. Because I was feeling a lot of ascension in my personal life, qualitative evolution. I wanted to close the gap between who I am and the life I’m living and my work life. So I think I got really selfish. You start a family and you get selfish.”
He doesn?t have time for friends: “I do have less time for friends now,” he admits. “My close friends have had to come to understand that I can’t just throw on a backpack and say, ‘We’ll be back in four days.’”
On Lance Armstrong: “He told a lie, he’s not a liar,” McConaughey says, a little uneasily. “When it came out, I took it personally, but then I realized it ain’t personal to him. I was going, ‘That son of a bitch!’ but then I thought, ‘Well, what was he supposed to do? Call me to the side and go, “Hey, I did this”?’ But I’m happy for him now, because despite all this outside conflict, he doesn’t have this inner conflict anymore.”

Yeah, he?s still a hippie. All of that talk of ?inner conflict? and ?qualitative evolution? is giving me a Patchouli headache. But he?s a hippie with his heart in the right place, I believe. I don?t like his answer on the Lance Armstrong thing, but I guess Matthew is trying to be classy and not throw his former friend under the bus completely. And you know what? Eleven months from now, I truly and genuinely think Matthew is going to be one of the leading contenders for the Best Actor Oscar. No joke. JK Livin, Oscar winner?

Matthew McConaughey lost 30 lbs for his role inThe Dallas Buyer’s Club.That’s just to let you know in case you thought he got AIDS. Which is not the case. He’s just playing a man with AIDS. It’s fake AIDS.
In any case, he hasn’t put back all the weight yet. He and Camila Alves were at the Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica posing for the cameras and he still looked like he needed a sandwich or two. This was probably one of the few times I sized Matt up and thought, “Yea, I could take him.”

Joining his fellow A-listers in one of the year's biggest film gatherings, Matthew McConaughey took to the streets at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday (January 19).
The 43-year-old Hollywood hunk dressed perfectly for the Park City, UT temps, sporting a plaid, flannel button-down, jeans, and sunglasses while making his way past eager fans.
While attending the annual shindig, Matthew dished about taking on so many independent flicks in the recent years, telling Fox News, "It is no coincidence that my last seven films have all been independent films. I wasn't thinking about whether it was studio or independent, but on the character," adding, "they don't pay me as well. It's ironic. I had my best, most fun and creative year making films a couple of years ago and yet I lost money for the first time."
Although the "Fool's Gold" star might have lost out on funds, he says acting is still his main focus, explaining, "I am really enjoying just being an actor. I have been offered to produce and I had said 'no thank you.' Directing and producing is a two-year commitment. I want to do my work, nail it, and go back to my family," McConaughey said. "The simplification (of only acting) is healthy for me. When you have a family, you have to be wise with choosing your co-curriculars."

Matthew McConaughey and his girl Camila Alves have welcomed their third baby after what felt like a three-month gestation. With some of these ladies, it feels like they?re pregnant for a year and a half, and then some of them seem to keep it under wraps successfully for a while. Anyway, they had a son, who will join big brother Levi and big sister Vida. Before I talk about this little boy?s name, some backstory? Matthew?s big breakout role was in Dazed & Confused, where his character?s life motto was ?Just Keep Livin??. As MM became more famous, he adopted the motto as his own, and his production company is called JK Livin and he has a foundation called JK Livin too. So what did he name his son? LIVINGSTON. As in, JK Livingston. LOL.
Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves are now the proud parents of another baby boy!
Though the spouses were rumored to have welcomed a baby girl, the Magic Mike actor set the record straight via Facebook Dec. 29.
“Camila Alves gave birth to our third child yesterday morning. Our son, Livingston Alves McConaughey, was born at 7:43 a.m on Dec. 28, 2012,” McConaughey wrote. “He greeted the world at 9 lbs. and 21 inches. Bless up and thank you for your well wishes.”
The couple’s new arrival joins older siblings Levi, 4, and Vida, 3.
McConaughey, 43, announced his wife’s pregnancy via Twitter July 4, just weeks after the couple tied the knot in Austin, Texas. Together since 2006, the couple swapped vows in front of several A-list pals, including Reese Witherpsoon and Woody Harrelson.
Several months into her third pregnancy, Brazilian model and handbag designer Alves, 30, told Us Weekly her two children were eager to welcome another sibling. “I think they fully understand that it’s a little baby coming,” she said in September. “They love it.”

Is it weird that I don?t hate the name? Granted, ?Livingston? is a weird name for a baby, but I think the boy will grow into the name rather well. Especially if he ends up being called by a nickname, like (O I DON?T KNOW) ?JK?. Levi and Livingston McConaughey? that sounds okay.

Showing true commitment to his role, a very skinny Matthew McConaughey was spotted on the set of "Dallas Buyers Club" in New Orleans, Louisiana on Wednesday (November 28).
The "Lincoln Lawyer" star wore a cowboy hat, blue button-down shirt, jeans, and cowboy boots while shooting scenes in an old truck.
Despite his startling appearance, the 43-year-old star insists he is doing it safely. He tells the Daily Beast, "I feel fine. I really do. I got the means to lose the weight in a really healthy way. I'm eating fresh fish. I'm just eating small amounts. I'm not being starved...I'm taking care of myself."
Continuing to reassure concerned fans, he added, "I've been checked. My levels are fine. I'm as healthy as can be. The real health challenge is when you put [the weight] back on...You can't just start eating cheeseburgers and ice cream. Your body will go into shock, and it just won't work."

As we?ve discussed a few times now, Matthew McConaughey has lost a lot of weight over the past few months. He was doing it on purpose ? he?s playing a man dying of AIDS in The Dallas Buyer’s Club. That?s also why he?s got a big mustache too ? the story takes place in the 1980s. Matthew hasn?t said a lot about his weight loss or his new career trajectory, in which all of sudden Matthew suddenly seems to be picking interesting roles in good films. But Matthew just sat down for a new interview with HitFix to discuss his crazy weight loss, what he wants to eat when he?s finally done filming The Dallas Buyer’s Club, and what he thinks about his Oscar buzz for Magic Mike (for real!). How much weight he?s really lost: ?I’ve lost 38 pounds. I feel good now. Overall, probably got 35 percent less energy, but there’s been plateaus, like getting past 170 was really hard, but then once you get [to] 167 the next seven come off easy. Getting passed 160, really hard. But then you fly down to 150. Getting passed 150 was really hard and then, bam! Got down to 143 and that’s where I want to be. So, once you get passed the plateau, your body seems to understand, ?O.K., this is where we’re leaving now, this is where we are? and so the energy rises.?
How he lost the weight: ?I’m doing cardio but I’ll tell you what, the more I’ve learned is ? and I think it comes with age too ? is it’s 90 percent diet. It’s 90 percent amount and then what you’re eating because right now I’m not losing any more weight if I burn 1,500 calories, two hours of cardio in an afternoon, or if I don’t. It doesn’t matter. It’s a matter of how much I eat or how little I eat.?
He?s less hungry now: ?Oh, yeah. Even if I’m lying to myself, you know. Your organs [and] muscles shrink, your organs shrink [and] my stomach has shrunk as well. So, as much as I can’t wait to have that cheeseburger on the day [shooting ends] it’ll probably be damn hard to eat the whole thing. When that day comes, and it’s coming, I don’t want to be doing this interview at a Pizza Hut buffet, you know? I choose to pick my places where there’s less good smells and temptations, you know? That’s really nice.?
When MM finishes the film, he wants a po boy first, then a cheeseburger: ?I will have some 70 percent beef, 30 percent fat ground beef, maybe a half pound cheeseburger with another three types of cheese. I’ll prepare it all and I’ll make sure that it takes three hours just to prepare. I’m going to have buns with butter on both sides, toasted and grilled. I’m going to melt the cheese on the top bun, Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise. I want kosher dill pickles sliced nice and thin, diced white onions, slightly grilled until they get almost hard, and some thin jalapeno slices. And then I’m just going to sit back and let the [expletive] just drop on the ground.?
On his Magic Mike character, Dallas: ?He didn’t consider himself a villain. He’s a poet capitalist who’s looking out for number one first.?
On the Oscar buzz for Best Supporting for his role in Magic Mike: ?Well, I mean, definitely excited. It’s exciting. This is the first time I’ve been flown into Los Angeles to do interviews specifically about being a contender as a supporting actor. That’s a new thing and that’s something I’m like, ?Yeah, right on.? And it was a role that allowed for that sort of real identity in the form of an expression. It was a wild ride of a guy. It was on the page [and I] had a lot of help creating this guy and bringing him to life. I’m glad it resonated and translated because Dallas is a life force of his own, and he’s not someone ? he’s not who I am. But he was sure fun to get in those leathers with.?

I hate to admit it, but I kind of think he deserves an Oscar nomination for Magic Mike too. He was really, seriously good in that movie. And he’s right, I don’t think he was playing the villain either. Now, do I think he should actually WIN an Oscar for Magic Mike? Probably not. But I would enjoy it if he was nominated.

Last month I wrote a post called ?Can we stop concern-trolling Matthew McConaughey?s weight loss?? So consider this Part Deux. These are new pics of Matthew as he caught a flight from LAX to NOLA, where he?s going to being filming The Dallas Buyer?s Club tomorrow. You know what he?s playing in that film? A man dying of AIDS. THAT is why Matthew has lost so much weight so dramatically. He?s supposed to look awful. He?s supposed to look sick. He?s supposed to look like he?s dying. That?s the character he?s playing!!!!! I cannot emphasize that enough. There is absolutely no reason to believe that Matthew will not gain the weight back when he?s done with the movie. There?s absolutely no reason to believe that the Academy won?t take notice of a previously buff pretty boy doing this kind of dramatic physical transformation for a prestigious drama, and that all of Matthew?s suffering will pay off in an Oscar nomination. Still, People Magazine had to speak to a ?source? close to Matthew about his weight:
Weight-wise, Matthew McConaughey is at his lowest point.
The actor, 43, was snapped looking shockingly frail Friday as he caught a flight from Los Angeles to New Orleans, where The Dallas Buyer’s Club is set to begin filming Sunday.
McConaughey has lost 30 lbs. ? and gained a mustache ? for the role. In the movie, he plays a mid-1980s AIDS patient who seeks out experimental HIV drugs to prolong his life.
“Matthew starts shooting this weekend, so he’s at his absolute lowest weight,” a source close to the actor tells PEOPLE. “In a month, he’ll begin to put it back on.”
Around the time he gains the weight back, McConaughey will gain a new family member as well ? wife Camila is set to deliver their third child this winter.

Exactly! He?ll put the weight back on. You know what this reminds me of? Michael Fassbender?s transformation in his 2008 breakout film Hunger. If you haven?t seen it? it?s not an easy film to watch. And Fassy?s physical transformation is dramatic, and it earned him a lot of acclaim and that?s when a lot of people sat up and took notice.
So? the moral of the story is ?don?t concern-troll Matthew, and he?ll be alright in the end.? I imagine that he did the weight loss thing with the help of a dietician and everything is being watched very carefully. And who knows? After this film, he?ll probably have a brand new career trajectory! Matthew McConaughey, Oscar winner?

These are photos of Matthew McConaughey from this past weekend, and from the weekend before, all of the photos from Austin, TX. People keep covering photos of MM and asking, in faux-concerned voices, ?OMG, what?s wrong with him?? And we?ve tried not to cover the photos at all. Because I think it?s really unfair to MM, oddly enough. He?s been losing weight steadily and dramatically for the past few months because he?s going to be playing a man dying of AIDS in The Dallas Buyer?s Club. He?s doing a dramatic physical transformation for a movie role. Stop concern-trolling him and acting like he?s sick! It?s for a movie.
He’s half the man he used to be. Matthew McConaughey looked like a skeletal shadow of himself jogging outside a gym in Austin, Tex. on Friday. In several layers of workout clothes, the actor, 42, looked alarmingly gaunt and haggard — even more than than he did just five days earlier on a stroll with his mother, Mary.
As previously reported, the usually muscular star’s body transformation is all for an important new film role in The Dallas Buyer’s Club, which tells the real-life story of Ron Woodruff, a drug addict in 1980s-era Texas who contracts HIV, and became one of the first AIDS activitists.
“I’m playing a guy who was sick and would have loved to have been healthier but wasn’t. For me, it’s more of a mental thing than a physical thing,” McConaughey told Us in August of playing Woodruff, who launched one of the first-ever AIDS support groups.
Eating “small amounts” of high-protein, low-carb food, the star told Us “I’ll get down to the weight I need to get to. I’m on my way, and it’s what I need to do for the job.”
Still, despite the star’s commitment to his craft — he’s lost about 30 pounds — a recent online poll at Us Weekly suggested that most fans think he’s gone too far: With 90 percent of nearly 18,000 votes expressing concern for McConaughey.

Stop doing polling on MM?s weight loss! That?s my take. Does he look unhealthy? Of course he does. Does he look like he?s dying? He?s SUPPOSED to look that way. Matthew is probably going to get an Oscar nomination (if not an actual award) for this role and for this physical transformation. And I feel fairly certain that when the film is over, he?ll gain the weight back.

Looking eerily gaunt, Matthew McConaughey was spotted leaving a gym in Austin, Texas on Friday (October 12).
The 42-year-old actor wore a dark zip-up jacket, beanie, track pants, and sneakers as he jogged back to his vehicle.
Fans need not worry, however, because the weight loss is preparation for his role in the upcoming film, "The Dallas Buyer's Club." McConaughey plays a man suffering from AIDS who was told to "go home and die."
In the drama, his character, Ron Woodroof, delves into the world of underground pharmacies that supply HIV drugs not approved for use in the U.S., in an attempt to prolong his life and, ultimately, the lives of thousands of other people.
The dedicated actor told Us Weekly, "I?m playing a guy who was sick and would have loved to have been healthier but wasn?t. For me, it?s more of a mental thing than a physical thing. I?ll get down to the weight I need to get to. I?m on my way, and it?s what I need to do for the job.?
