Here are some photos of Matthew McConaughey and Naomi Watts at the Cannes photocall and premiere of their new Gus Van Sant film, Sea of Trees. Terrible title, right? Especially given that the film sounds like an utterly maudlin, depressive exercise. The film is about a man (McConaughey) who wants to commit suicide, so he travels to Japan?s ?Suicide Forest? and ends up meeting some other people wanting to commit suicide and he ends up going on a journey to learn that he doesn?t really want to die. Sounds pretty terrible, right? Like, why would you even want to make that film? And why wouldn?t you call the film The Suicide Forest? That seems like an obvious one, right?
Anyway, the film is apparently as bad as it sounds. Sea of Trees was the first film at this year?s Cannes Film Festival to be booed following the first screening. EW compiled some of the worst of critics? tweets here ? The Guardian called the film a ?fantastically annoying and dishonest tear-jerker.? Vanity Fair?s Richard Lawson skewered it. I?ve yet to see a positive review. Apparently, people were actually HISSING. So what was The McConaughey?s reaction? He told the assembled journalists at the press conference, ?Anyone has as much right to boo as they do to ovate.? Alright alright alright.
As for fashion? Naomi?s photocall dress was Peter Pilotto. Her premiere look (the one-shouldr gown in pale silver-blue) was Armani Priv Spring 2015. Matthew?s wife Camila Alves also walked the premiere red carpet, but not with her husband. Camila?s gown is Gabriela Cadena. I think I like Naomi?s Armani most of all, although I wish it was just a touch longer.

At 45 years old he?s already had a prolific career in acting so it?s no wonder Matthew McConaughey was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday afternoon (November 17).
Joined by his wife Camila Alves and kiddos Levi, Vida and Livingston, the ?Dallas Buyers Club? Oscar-winner was in goot spirits as he addressed the crowd.
Matthew stated, ?Years ago, before I had children ? and I always knew I wanted to have children ? I thought, ?When I have children, I don?t think I want to raise them around this industry. I don?t think I want to have them engaged in this industry. I want to move off somewhere and have them outside of it.??
?I can happily and honorably say ? I so love having my children engaged in what we do, and meeting the people that we get to work with.?
McConaughey also credited Camila with helping keep the family all together. ?When I go to work, she says, ?All right, kiddos, we?re all going.? No discussion. She has things she does in her own life that she?s willing to drop, put in second place. [She says,] ?You?re the primary bread winner ? We?re going with you. This is your career. We?re going.? That?s a huge privilege.?

| Matthew McConaughey covers GQ, talks God, rom-coms & the 'Redskins' name | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Matthew McConaughey covers the November issue of GQ and it?s one of the most comprehensive interviews I?ve ever read. Full stop. MM gave a lot of decent-to-good interview last year during his Oscar campaign, but now that he?s successfully rebooted his entire career and become an Oscar-winner, Matthew has thoughts. Deep thoughts. About everything from the name ?Redskins? to his rom-com past to God to? everything. You can read the full interview here (prepare yourself for the McConauniverse). Some highlights:
His rom-com past, his early fame: ?I’ve never had fears that I was stuck in one thing. I’m sure we’re going to talk about the years when I was in romantic comedies and I was seen as the guy who was on the beach, running around shirtless. I did that. Damn right that was me. I wasn’t scared like, “Oh God, I’m going to be stuck here.” But I was like, I understand at some point that that is in italics now. [The italics part of my life] has two parts. One was the myth that was branded and created. Second, yeah, it’s me. I did Fool’s Gold in Australia, had a summer in Malibu, and made a surfer film?basically, when you edit those all together, it was one continuous ninety-degree day on the beach without a shirt. But also, I worked hard to live in Malibu, California. I’m going to the beach! I’m gonna go surfing! No, I don’t want to wear a shirt. I want to get a tan and feel the sun on my bones. And it’s Tuesday. You’re recording it? Good for you?. I’m not going to apologize for enjoying what I do.?
He?s proud of those rom-coms: ?Absolutely. These things aren’t easy. What’s hard is to make them look easy. Those kinds of movies are what they are. They get pooh-poohed by critics. They get pooh-poohed by actors themselves. And in a way I get it, but in other ways it’s completely unfair. There’s a buoyancy you need to make them work. I believe I gave them buoyancy. And some of the shoots were very difficult, with me trying to fight for the balls on the guy?Look, I’m happy if you think I “cruised through” those. I did my work.
Babies are his secret weapon: ?Never is a man more of a man than when he is the father of a newborn. Whatever decisions you make in the first six months of becoming a father, double down on them. I mean, you’re meeting the Courier. You’re meeting the Shepherd, the Future Prince. You immediately have something you don’t have to think about. You know what’s important. Bam! And the clarity of that is like, “Whew.” I definitely got more selfish. And at the same time, I think I got more compassionate, which don’t always go together, you know?
Being a lifelong Redskins fan, on whether they should change the name: ?Man, it’s twofold. What interests me is how quickly it got pushed into the social consciousness. We were all fine with it since the 1930s, and all of a sudden we go, “No, gotta change it”? It seems like when the first levee breaks, everybody gets on board. I know a lot of Native Americans don’t have a problem with it, but they’re not going to say, “No, we really want the name.” That’s not how they’re going to use their pulpit. It’s like my feeling about gun control: “I get it. You have the right to have guns. But look, let’s forget that right. Let’s forget the pleasure you get safely on your range, because it’s in the wrong hands in other places.”
Whether it would hurt to see the Redskins logo gone: ?It’s not going to hurt me. It’s just… I love the emblem. I dig it. It gives me a little fire and some oomph. But now that it’s in the court of public opinion, it’s going to change. I wish it wouldn’t, but it will.?
He goes to church every Sunday: ?Yeah. In Texas. It’s non-denominational. It’s based in the faith that Jesus is the son of God, that he died for our sins, but many different denominations come in.
[From GQ]
There?s so much more in that interview. I didn?t want to just give you the motherlode of McConaughquotes, but he talks a lot about going back to church after his kids were born, why he and Camilla decided to marry, how he feels about Lance Armstrong, and whether he thinks vanity is a good thing (spoiler: he believes in vanity). It?s a really fascinating interview and a lot of it is Classic McConaughey because he?s talking about space and time and the waves, bro. As for his stuff about the Washington Redskins? actually, I don?t think there are many Native Americans who are really A-OK with the name. The name needs to be changed. Bro.

He made millions of ladies swoon as a sexy veteran stripper in ?Magic Mike? but Matthew McConaughey may not be returning for round 2.
According to Gabriel Iglesias, the ?Dazed and Confused? hunk isn?t in the script that he?s seen, though he hasn?t received the final edit.
Iglesias told Dish Nation, "All they're telling me -- because they haven't shown me the whole script yet -- is that they're taking the show on the road?so something tells me it's not going to be shot in Florida like the last one."
Furthermore, "Word has it Matthew is probably not going to be involved in this one. Because he's worth a lot of money? that whole Oscar thing, the nerve right?"

| Oscars 2014: Matthew McConaughey wins best actor for 'Dallas Buyer's Club' | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Matthew McConaughey has taken home the best actor statue for his transformative portrayal of AIDS victim turned advocate entrepreneur Ron Woodruff in Dallas Buyer’s Club. McConaughey has swept the best actor category this year, taking home a SAG, Globe and Independent Spirit Award, so this win was expected for him. Of course we also expect McConaughey to give a colorful speech. At the SAGs he talked about taking a ride in a spaceship to Neptune and at last night’s Spirit Awards he gave a very long speech about the nature of independent film. Tonight he tried to rein it in a little, but he spoke quickly and remained highly entertaining. McConaughey really loves a good turn of phrase and he loves to tell a story. Here’s some of his speech, which had a rough kind of theme that seemed like he was fleshing out on the fly.
There’s about three things… that I need each day. One of them is something to look up to, another is something to look forward to, and another is something to chase. First off I want to thank God because that’s who I look up. He has graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand. He has shown me that it’s a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates. In the words of the late Charlie Laughton who said “When you’ve got God you’ve got a friend, and that friend is you…”
To my father who I know he’s up there right now with a big pot of gumbo, I know he’s in his underwear and he’s got a cold can of Miller Light and he’s dancing right now. To you dad, you taught me what it means to be a man… To my [family] you are the four people in my life that I want to make the most proud of me.
To my hero, that’s who I chase. When I was 15 years old I had a very important person in my life come to me and say ‘who’s your hero,’ and I said ‘I’m not going to think about that, give me a couple of weeks.’ I come back two weeks later this person comes up and says ‘who’s your hero’ and I thought about it… ‘it’s me in ten years.’ So I turn 25 ten years later and that same person comes back to me and says ‘are you a hero?’ and I was like ‘not even close. My hero’s me at 35…’ My hero’s always 10 years away. I’m never going to be a hero. I’m never going to obtain that, I know I’m not.
So to any of that, whatever it is we’re chasing… to that I say “alright, alright, alright.”
McConaughey was floundering in romcoms for a while, then he became a dad, took some time off and waited until some meatier roles came his way. He’ll tell you about it in his colorful way, and he won’t disrespect his earlier roles. Congratulations to Matthew, he really brought it for Dallas Buyer’s Club, and it was much more than extreme weight loss. He became that character in a incredible film that took 20 years to get made. And now he can add “Academy Award Winner” before his name.

| Matthew McConaughey covers Variety, wants to snatch that Oscar from Leo D. | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Last week, Leonardo DiCaprio covered the new issue of Variety. This week it?s Matthew McConaughey. Leo gave a wonderfully personal, extensive interview about his craft, about his years in Hollywood, about what he?s learned. The message was pretty much ?this is my time, give me that Oscar.? Matthew?s Variety interview is strikingly similar, although Matthew?s career arc is different ? Matthew was a ?company man? doing rom-coms and big-budget nonsense for more than a decade. Then he took some time off, refocused and came back as an indie darling. As opposed to Leo, who has never sold out like Matthew, I suppose. It?s an interesting side-by-side comparison. You can read Matthew?s full cover story here, and here are some highlights:
Working in indie films: ?For the first time in my career, I lost money! No joke!?
His affection for rom-coms: ?It is a hard challenge to make it work, to tell a story you?ve seen time and time again that you know what the ending is going to be. You have to stay light, you have to keep it moving. You drop anchor in one of those movies, and the whole thing sinks.?
Taking a break for a few years: ?I went to my wife and my agent and said, ?I?m going to stop for a bit,? I?m going to sit back in the shadows. I?m getting into my 40s, a great time for a man. I?ve started a family. I want to take time to laugh and love and enjoy these adventures? We?re a team. I know it?s not easy on her, though she does it with aplomb.?
Learning how to say no: ?I just knew I was going to hold out for a while and things would dry out. I didn?t know how long they would dry out for, and that was scary. I would get sent things and the paychecks were great, and I would say no. Then, they quit sending them altogether. And then ? nothing. So the message got through.?
But then the big dogs came to the yard: ?All of a sudden, I became a good idea for people like William Friedkin and Steven Soderbergh ? people who hadn?t called before, who maybe wouldn?t have seen me as a good idea three years before? It wasn?t a conscious choice to go indie. It was just that my head was down, looking for great characters. And those are harder to find in the big movies. And when you have a role like that in a studio film, they aren?t coming to me. They?re talking to George Clooney.?
Losing weight for DBC: ?I ate well. Just very small amounts. Five ounces of fish, twice a day. Cup of vegetables, twice a day. The secret is, I gave myself four months.? During that time, he also immersed himself in Woodroof?s past, meeting with his family and studying his diaries, which were given to him by Woodroof?s sister and daughter. ?It was such an insight into this boyish mind, these small town wanderings,? McConaughey reveals. ?It was my secret weapon.?
Matthew knows Marty Scorsese too: ?I showed up [on the Wolf of Wall Street set] and had already lost like 25 pounds,? he laughs. ?Marty was like, ?Stop, I need you to stop!???
Talking about himself in the third person: ?I?ve got a saying: When faced with the inevitable, get relative. The inevitable was, I?m going to do this. I?ve got support from my family that insulates me. I surrounded myself with everything I needed to go on this adventure. And the focus was exciting. I said to myself, ?We?re taking a trip, McConaughey. This is a story you want to tell. Those adventures you talk about ? you?re on one now.???
Losing the weight made him hyper-aware: ?I went from being cranky to hyper aware,? he says. ?That clarity is hard on other people, because my bullshit meter was zero. I was like, ?Speak up. No adjectives or adverbs. Just nouns and verbs. Speak!??
He name-drops Christopher Nolan too: McConaughey had run into Nolan over the years, but it was at an event about two years ago he says the director first praised his work. ?He came up to me and said, ??Mud.? I love that movie,??? McConaughey recalls. He was later asked to fly to Los Angeles to meet with Nolan. ?I sat down with him for about 2 hours at his house,? he recalls. ?Not one word came up about ?Interstellar.? I walked out not sure what to think. I mean, he?s not a guy who takes general meetings.? Clearly Nolan liked what he saw; McConaughey was offered the role. ?Interstellar? might break McConaughey?s streak of independent films, but he does point out that Nolan, who began his career with small pics like ?Following? and ?Memento,? still brings an indie sensibility to big-budget movies. ?There?s no f–king around on set,? the actor notes. ?He?s a great problem solver. In that way, he?s very indie. Here?s a guy who could have whatever budget he wants ? and we finished shooting early.?
And in the end: ?For the next two months, I?m playing the character of Matthew McConaughey, an actor proud of the films he?s been in,? he says, before again opting for the third person. ?And if any of those films or his performances are in awards shows, he?s going to go, heart high and head up, and look them all in the eye and say, ?Damn right this is a great time in my career.? That?s the role I?m in now. I?ve got a lot to be thankful for.?
[From Variety]
The career stuff is what it is. I don?t begrudge Matthew the awards he?s received thus far (okay, I begrudge him the SAG Award a little), but I?m happy that Matthew has found his footing as a proper actor and I?m also happy that he?s not disrespecting the years he spent in an endless parade of rom-coms. He finds a nice balance between respecting the work then and loving the new path he?s on. But is it enough to get him an Oscar? I don?t know. Truly. I think his bizarro, druggy SAG speech hurt him, quite honestly. In a perfect world, I?d like to see Leo and Matthew cancel each other out and the Oscar would go to Chiwetel. But that probably won?t happen.
Also: I love that Matthew talks about his wife. That?s one thing that he genuinely has on Leo that works in MM?s favor: he has a loving, supporting wife (who isn?t in her early 20s) and he?s the father of three beautiful children. The Academy prefers that to Leo?s modelizing.

| Matthew McConaughey & Camila Alves: worst-dressed couple of the SAGs? | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

This post is devoted to the big couples of the SAG Awards, better known as ?the men are famous and they didn?t pose separately from their wives, so we might as well talk about the wives too.? Let?s start with Matthew McConaughey & Camila Alves. Camila wore vintage Donna Karan atelier. I?m sorry, but this color looks like baby poop/vomit. SHINY baby vomit. It?s a pretty enough design ? imagine it in a rich blue, purple or silver. As for Matthew, he wore D&G, like usual (he?s the face of D&G). He was also on something, I think. His speech was crazy and it made me feel queasy and uncomfortable. Dear Academy: please don?t give him an Oscar. PLEASE.
Speaking of hot messes, Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon were in attendance because Mariah has a small part in The Butler. She was falling all over the place, trying to make everything about MARIAH and it was a mess. Her Saint Laurent dress is blah too.
Matt Damon & Luciana. I think Matt has Transitions lenses. RIGHT? Lucy wore Pamella Roland, it?s like a wrinkled wedding gown.
Forest Whitaker and his wife Keisha. She?s so elegant in this Georges Chakra couture.
Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson. I don?t like Rita?s dress at all.
Rupert Friend & Aimee Mullins. Rupert needs to stop with that hair.
