Uma Thurman, 39, has a new interview in Parade Magazine in which she’s promoting Motherhood, which is out in the US in limited release. Uma discusses life as a working mom, dealing with fame and gossip, and how a bad film choice (The Avengers) helped her make the decision to have her first child. She also talks candidly about the media scrutiny of her split with then-husband Ethan Hawke. Uma says we shouldn’t feel bad for her because the tabloids cover her personal life and that other people have worse gossip to deal with. I really admire her attitude and it sounds like she’s in a good place now.
A bad film.
“Sometimes the film you’re in, that really wasn’t good while it was going on, is the thing that pushes you to take some positive action which you never would have done if you had an easy day. It was The Avengers that brought my first baby into the world. I came home from making that movie and I started rethinking my life. I said to myself, ‘I’m going to have a baby,’ because I felt like I’d gotten to a spot where I wasn’t sure what I was acting for. Was I running from myself going from location to location? Was I hurting myself? I wanted something different that would change me.”
Coming to terms with fame.
“I was surrounded with so much hype before I was even 20. It’s like a hurdle you have to climb over. You have to prove to people that you’re not any of that list of cliches they think you are. I remember a great quote by Bill Murray who said when somebody told him they wanted to become rich and famous ? ‘Try rich first and see if that doesn’t cover it.’”
Losing her privacy.
“Katherine Hepburn once said, ‘I never care about anything that’s written about me as long as it’s not true.’ I’ll second that. But I don’t want to be a celebrity whiner. People can suffer as much from gossip in a small town as I can from a tabloid story, maybe more. So I don’t expect too much sympathy.”
And that includes the furor surrounding her split with Ethan Hawke.
“For celebrities to say that it’s tougher for them to have a lover or be married than it is for anybody in the real world is pushing the envelope a bit. I’m so sick and tired of talking about the difficult times. It’s just so boring. I mean, everyone gets divorced in this country, practically. We all just have to get over it. My marriage to Ethan just fell apart in an unfortunate and public way. I got to the point where I was going, ‘If I see one more headline about it, I’m going to gag me with a spoon.’ This is now a great time for me. I’m moving into a great time.”

Parade has more with Uma, including her thoughts on being a working mom, “every working mom is kind of a superhero,” and confirmation that she’s working on Kill Bill 3. I wasn’t aware that a Kill Bill sequel was already confirmed, but I found that Tarantino talked about Kill Bill 3 on an Italian talk show earlier this month.
Uma is currently engaged to Swiss financier Arpad Busson and is a mom to daughter Maya, 11, and son Levon, 7, with her ex, Ethan Hawke. She said having kids is “is the best-kept secret,” but that she’s conflicted about being a working mom and wants to make sure she’s taking worthy projects. Motherhood isn’t faring well with critics, though and only has a 24% aggregate rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Actress and former face of Lancome cosmetics Uma Thurman attempts “bordello sexy” in a spread for next months’ W magazine. The Daily Mail says
The 39-year-old smoulders on a couch clad in a feathered stole, and black stockings and suspenders in a photoshoot for W magazine.
The 39-year-old looks like a tragic actress on the way down the greasy pole of celebrity.
“Greasy pole of celebrity?” Funny, I always just called him “Mickey Rourke.” To each his own, I guess.

Another day, another poorly styled magazine cover. This is Uma Thurman on October?s W Magazine, to promote her independent film, Motherhood. Here?s a question - how friggin? difficult is it to make Uma Thurman look like crap? She?s this gorgeous, unique, striking bombshell, and they?ve made her look all pale and ghoulish. The dress is whacked too. It would be righteous without the shoulder cutouts.
Uma is promoting Motherhood, a film about a ?New York mother of two and blogger as she prepares for her daughter?s birthday party, enters a writing contest, navigates playground politics and clashes with her best friend (played by Minnie Driver).? In the full interview, Uma talks about her fiance Arpad Busson and her fast-approaching 40th birthday. Huffington Post has excerpts:
On possible wedding plans with fiance Busson, and if she’ll move to London or stay in NY: “I’m happily engaged, but we haven’t set a wedding up. I’m not in a rush to do anything. One day we’ll do it, when we’re ready… We can’t live anywhere else because my childrens’ father lives here. We’ll figure that out.”
On approaching 40: “I can’t say my 30s were the easiest time. And I had thought my 20s were hard! … You know, that’s the worst mistake a woman can make, to think, Oh, I’m 32 and I’ve had two kids and I’ve worked since I was 16 and now it’s going to get easier. Because as soon as you think that, you’re doomed! You’re absolutely doomed!
On regrets: “I feel like I lived my life backwards. Like Bob Dylan said, ‘I was so much older then; I’m younger than that now.’ Getting older has been a process of realizing that I wasn’t as grown up as I had thought. When I was a teenager people often referred to me as jaded or knowing. It’s a classic teen illusion to think you know it all, but I’ve certainly learned I don’t. I’ve certainly learned the hard way.
On how her career isn’t where it could be, because she stays in NY: “When my son turned seven, I felt myself stand upright and realize that I wasn’t going to be bending over so much. I realized I had been kind of in this position for years! It’s nice to think that everybody’s getting more independent and now I can kind of maybe, slightly selfishly, think about work again…You know, I do care about my work, and it is part of me. And I am a mother, but I need to do what I’m good at doing. You really can’t let go of all of yourself…. Even your kids need you to be who you are… I’ve been living at home for work for a long time. If I don’t leave soon, I’m going to literally choke my career to death.”

I love some Uma, and it pains me to think of her career post-Kill Bill. It?s kind of sucked. She?s a really talented actress, and I wish she would work more and pick better projects. But obviously, she?s had other priorities, like being a mom, so probably just takes what fits in her mom-schedule. Uma needs a comeback. She needs to work with Quentin Tarantino again. That?s the ticket!

Brad Pitt is still making some news on his promotional tour for Inglorious Basterds, although he?s sort of disappeared. I?m pretty sure Brad and his family are in France now, and Brad didn?t even show up to the New York premiere of Basterds earlier this week. Fox News 411 has an exclusive clip of the movie, and it?s just added to my excitement. This movie looks like a lot of fun - of course, I?m a Tarantino fan, so I know what to expect. Lots of blood. Lots of humor that?s right on the knife?s edge of creepy.
The second part of his interview with Ann Curry aired yesterday. There?s wasn?t much in the second part, though. Not like Brad?s confession in the first part, about how ?the greater the love, the greater the loss?. Brad talked about Basterds, and how he?s signed on for voice work in a new Dreamworks animated film, Oobermind. HuffPo has the rundown:
Brad Pitt plays a Nazi-scalping lieutenant from the Tennessee mountains in ‘Inglourious Basterds,’ Quentin Tarantino’s WWII epic/Nazi revenge fantasy that opens Friday.
“People lose some hair,” he told Ann Curry Tuesday on the Today Show. “I lead a renegade group who takes scalps.”
Probably not something he and Angelina Jolie will take their kids to see, but Pitt revealed another, less grisly project that will be family friendly.
“I’m doing a voice for an animation film. With Robert Downey Jr., Tina Fey. A superhero who wants out,” he said. “He doesn’t want to be a superhero anymore.”
“Is this autobiographical?” Curry asked.
“It’s not,” said Pitt. “But that sounded like an angle.”
Reports indicate the movie, due to hit theaters in November 2010, is called ‘Oobermind’ and that Will Ferrell has replaced Downey Jr. as the star. Pitt said his kids inspired him to take on the role. “It’s something they’ll enjoy, think dad’s cool,” he said.

Meanwhile, Quentin Tarantino has been making some major publicity rounds, giving all sorts of interviews. Tarantino told the New York Daily News that he?s already writing a prequel to Basterds, and he claimed, ?A lot of the actors would really like to do it. If the movie proves to be very popular, then we’ll do it.? Eli Roth says the prequel is about his character and ?Brad’s character in Italy. We’ve already signed up - we told Quentin we absolutely want to do it. On set, we’d be like, ‘Do a prequel!’ and Brad would be yelling ‘Prequel!’ in between takes.” It sounds interesting. I?ve always wondered why there haven?t been more Hollywood films about the Italian front of WWII - a lot of stuff happened in Italy, and soldiers on all sides fought bitterly.
Lastly, we have Tarantino?s appearance on David Letterman on Monday night. The part everyone is talking about is where Quentin talks about Brad, and how Brad would always fall asleep in the set of Basterds. Here?s the transcribed version:
Letterman: Honestly, we?re glad that you?re here. We would rather have Brad Pitt but?
Tarantino: [laughs]
Letterman: Getting back to Brad Pitt? there has to be some incumbent pressure, having a star of his magnatude under you control.
Tarantino: No, no, no! He?s a blast. There is that old adage: You treat actors like stars and you treat stars like actors. And it actually works out really good that way. But one of the things that?s kind of funny is we try to? usually, discourage sleeping on the set, alright, it can happen from time to time?
Letterman: [laughing] We do that in our audience, but it never works.
Tarantino: But? because Brad has a big family at home?sleeping on the set is the only time he gets to sleep.

CB wants me to point out that it seems like Quentin ?forgot? that whenever someone falls asleep in one of his sets, he photographs them with a giant purple dildo. I don?t even want to think about all the stuff I was photographed with when I used to pass out in college, so I?ll just skip over that part. I will say this - I do think Brad and Quentin got along really well, and it wouldn?t surprise me at all if they did more films together. Brad could become Quentin?s new muse, like Uma Thurman!

Some gossipmongers are asking if Uma Thurman got married over the weekend, and the answer is a definitive ?uh…maybe… actually, maybe not?. Allegedly, Uma could have married fiance Arpad Busson during a little Bahamian mini-break. Several sources reported that Uma and Arpad had obtained a marriage license on the island of Eleuthura on Saturday. But her representative Steven Huvane denied the elopement report before it was even out there for a few days. E! is reporting Huvane?s denial as: ?Uma did not get married.? But Huvane has lied before!
To go along with the rumors of an elopement, OK! Magazine is reporting that during Uma?s appearance at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, she was smiling, happy, flipping her hair, and ?favoring her right hand?. Gasp! Someone get the smelling salts! Before I get to the right hand business, let me just ask this - isn?t Uma usually a very pleasant, happy person? She always seems kind of bubbly and energetic, but not in a Drew Barrymore way, like it?s an affectation. Uma just seems cool and nice.
While rumors swirl that Uma Thurman married Arpad Busson in the Bahamas over the weekend, the stunning star isn’t giving anything away.
At the Tribeca Film Festival Opening Press Conference held [Tuesday] in NYC, she seemed to be in a sunny mood, dressed down in jeans and a blue jacket over black suit and white blouse. She smiled often, flipping her hair and jumping about a bit. She also quite notably seemed to be favoring her right hand while gesturing and talking, leaving her left hand conspicuously at her side for most of the event.
And although there seemed to be a bit of a sparkle on that hand’s ring finger, it’s hard to tell if that bit of shiny gold is meant to be a wedding band or just a pretty bit of adornment.
If indeed she did wed, that was one short honeymoon ? she was back in town last night for a Cookie magazine event as well.

So, this ?favoring the right hand? business. As a right-handed person, I can only say that I favor my right hand to a ridiculous degree - I don?t even know why I have a left hand most days. E! has the scoop on the ring stuff, claiming that Uma was ?wearing bright baubles that were neither a wedding band nor the 8-carat engagement stunner she was reportedly given when Busson proposed last June… Instead of the big diamond, the star wore a topaz piece to an event for Cookie magazine Monday, and a shiny gold accoutrement to a press conference for the Tribeca Film Festival.?

Taking to Park City, Utah as the Sundance Film Festival winds down to its final days, Uma Thurman was all smiles during the premiere of her new movie “Motherhood” on Wednesday night (January 21).
The “Kill Bill” cutie posed alongside a batch of big red balloons, then heading off to greet her co-stars Minnie Driver and Anthony Edwards, as well as the film’s writer/director Katherine Dieckmann.
