Uma Thurman has written an op-ed in the Washington Post about abortion. The Texas law effectively banning abortion in the Lone Star state has not been on the books for one full month. There are already plans afoot to challenge the constitutionality of the law, and pro-choice advocates are already trying to force American women to understand what is at stake here. Uma?s op-ed is something we?ll likely see more of: celebrity women sharing their abortion stories, humanizing the issue and trying to make people understand why access to abortion is a human right. I started my acting career at 15, working in an environment where I was often the only kid in the room. In my late teens, I was accidentally impregnated by a much older man. I was living out of a suitcase in Europe, far from my family, and about to start a job. I struggled to figure out what to do. I wanted to keep the baby, but how?
I telephoned home. My mother was gravely ill in the hospital. My father went to her bedside to discuss my options. We had never spoken about sex before; this was the first time, and it was terrible for all of us. They asked me about the status of my relationship ? it was not viable ? and warned me how difficult it would be to raise a baby as a teen on my own. My childish fantasy of motherhood was soundly corrected as I weighed answers to their very precise questions. I was just starting out in my career and didn?t have the means to provide a stable home, even for myself. We decided as a family that I couldn?t go through with the pregnancy, and agreed that termination was the right choice. My heart was broken nonetheless.
An older female friend in Germany offered to help me. In her doctor?s office in Cologne, I was given a local anesthetic and had an abortion. I lay awake on the table while the doctor, who was a kind man, explained every step of the process as it happened. It hurt terribly, but I didn?t complain. I had internalized so much shame that I felt I deserved the pain.
My fingers were tightly locked across my chest, and when the procedure was done the doctor looked down at me said, ?You have beautiful hands ? you remind me of my daughter.? That single gesture of humanity is seared in my mind as one of the most compassionate moments I have ever experienced. In his eyes, I was a person, I was a daughter, I was still a girl.

She goes on to call her abortion ?my darkest secret until now,? and she reflects on how that early abortion allowed her to be ready for motherhood later in life, and that ?I have nothing to gain from this disclosure, and perhaps much to lose.? She hopes to reach ?women and girls who might feel a shame that they can?t protect themselves from and have no agency over.? It?s a really powerful piece. But I hate this I hate that women have to pour out their souls and fight and cry and beg for society to recognize us as human beings with agency and not merely state-owned uteruses. It fking sucks. Women my age have known OUR ENTIRE LIFETIMES that Roe is always just a hair?s breadth away from being overturned. Millions of us have always voted accordingly. But a minority of Americans wanted the orange Nazi to be president, so here we are.

Actress and Quentin Tarantino muse Uma Thurman broke some bones after being thrown from horse this week. Page Six reported that 46-year-old Uma, an avid equestrian, was seen being helped into a St. Barts restaurant by her kids. An eyewitness said she ?looked like she had hip surgery.? Uma?s people confirmed that Uma was in an equestrian accident, saying “She was training on a young thoroughbred who got spooked. She was thrown and broke a few bones.” I?m glad too hear it was just a minor accident. I don?t know about you, but I don?t think I can deal with losing anymore beloved entertainment figures this year.
Poor Uma?s had a rough go of it lately, not only getting ejected off of a horse, but suffering a sloppy, icky, boozy kiss at the hands of former Fiat CEO Lapo Elkann at last month?s Cannes Film Festival amfAR gala. But, looking at the positive, she does have some cute kids, especially her youngest, 3-year-old Rosalind. She posted a photo of her and her daughter decked out in their finest swim attire on Instagram a few months ago. What a cutie. She also recently sold her Gramercy Park, New York duplex for a reported $6.25 million. If you are a sucker for house p0rn, check out the pictures. I could just live in the bathroom.
And, speaking of Uma?s kids, her 17-year-old daughter Maya Hawke (Dad is Ethan) is gorgeous, and she definitely inherited her mother?s sense of style. She rocked a chic dress and slick bob haircut for her recent prom. I, on the other hand, went to prom in the 80s and had a gravity-defying updo and was enveloped in a billowing cloud of Pink taffeta. Maya is off to Juilliard in the fall. Smart cookie.
Oh, and I?d be remiss in not sharing the pain of the song that has now gotten itself wedged in my brain while writing this post. The minute I typed ?Uma Thurman? in Google, I got this video in my search results. Damn you, Fall Out Boy.

Honestly, this year?s Cannes Film Festival has been lacking in some serious glamour and some serious star wattage. Yes, Julia Roberts came out and yes, Kristen Stewart was the It Girl of the festival. But high-wattage moments were few and far between. So I had high hopes for this year?s Cannes amfAR gala, but the turnout was severely muted. Uma Thurman was quite literally one of the few ?bright spots? at amfAR. Uma chose this hot Pink Schiaparelli Couture gown which? looks amazing. It?s a great dress and she looks wonderful.
Melissa George also wore Schiaparelli Couture. This reminds me of? like, Prada circa 2003? The layered fabric also adds weight to her midsection in a really unflattering way.

Irina Shayk in Miu Miu. This is fine. It fits, it?s flirty, it?s pretty and it?s uncontroversial. I?m sure lots of women would love to own this dress. The only thing I have to ask is? are those bejeweled candy canes on the bodice?!
Helen Mirren wore this rather magical Temperley London gown. It?s such a joy to see her on the red carpet, and I always love to see what she?s chosen. This one is a little bit matronly, but the sheer parts help make it look somewhat hip.
Here?s doucheface Adrien Brody and his girlfriend Lara Lieto. Lara wore a surprisingly pretty Zuhair Murad gown in mint green. She still looks so, so young though.

The leggy star could be seen perched on the side of a dock hanging on with both hands before plunging into the cool waters below.
The star is currently enjoying the benefits of dating hotelier Andre Balasz who owns the Standard group of hotels including the one she’s staying at in Miami.
Uma recently returned to television in the NBC series The Slap and the limited event show ended its run last week.

I?ve never gotten Botox or fillers, but it seems like it takes a few weeks for injectibles to ?wear off,? right? Like, at first your face will look puffy and frozen and slowly, the stuff wears off a little bit and everything sort of ?deflates? and you can move your eyebrows and cheeks a little bit. I?m wondering because of the ongoing debate about Uma Thurman?s face.
If you asked me on Tuesday if I was 100% sure that Uma had overdone the Botox and fillers, I would have said ?of course she did.? Then on Wednesday, we heard from Uma?s makeup artist, who claimed that Uma?s new look was simply the product of no eye makeup. While I thought he was full of it, I also have to admit that the lack of eye makeup really did throw off the look of her face. Then on Thursday, Uma appeared on the Today Show and she wore eye makeup and her hair is a little bit different, and she looks relatively normal. Did the Botox and fillers wear off quickly? Or was it all a makeup-induced optical illusion?

When asked about the comments about her Botox work, Uma laughed (or tried to laugh through the ?Tox) and said: ?Um, I don?t know. I guess nobody liked my makeup!… I mean, I?ve been doing this for years and years and years. People say things nice?and they say things mean. It?s just, like, whatever! You know, you take the good with the bad.?
So, she?s still sticking with the story that it was just makeup. Which, granted, I?m now saying that the makeup fail was a big part of this. But I paid close attention to how her face moved as she was speaking, and there?s certainly enough evidence to suggest that she has had injectibles. Her forehead is like granite! But the cheeks aren?t quite so puffy in this interview.

On Monday night, Uma Thurman stepped out on a red carpet in NYC and by Tuesday morning, the internet was ablaze with stories about how Uma had overdone the Botox and fillers ? we discussed it yesterday as well, go here to read. Several people pointed out that Uma?s makeup ? or lack thereof ? was significantly contributing to Uma?s seemingly ?new face.? I think it was a combination of no eye makeup plus Botox and fillers. She genuinely looked ?frozen? and her cheeks looked utterly unmoving. Well, Uma?s makeup artist was dispatched to People Magazine to give an explanation for Uma?s new look. Troy Surratt says it?s just makeup, obviously.
?Frankly, I?m quite surprised by the conversation,? Tony Surratt tells PEOPLE. ?By now I would have thought that we were all open to and knowledgeable of the role that makeup plays in the world of fashion and particularly celebrity, as a medium for creative self expression. I think that women should feel open and free to experiment with different beauty looks ? it?s only makeup, at the end of the day it all washes off.?
Surratt calls the look he created on Uma, ?effortless Parisienne chic,? focusing on her lips and complexion. (Note: No mascara was used at all!)
?I wanted to give Uma a statement lip balanced by a more feathered brow,? he shares. ?Uma and I discussed creating a look that was more editorial with soft natural lashes. As a makeup artist I?ve grown a bit tired of all of the lash-y looks and fake eyelashes that we?ve been seeing on the red carpet for some time now.? By going for bold lips, statement brows and barely-there eye makeup, ?the face is sectioned into three equal parts lending a visual balance and allowing the mouth to be the star of the face,? Surratt adds.

There?s more at People Magazine about what makeup he used, but it just read as an advertisement for certain products, so blah. Looking through these photos again, armed with the ?it?s just makeup? excuse? I can see why the no-eyemakeup look is throwing off how we see her face, but I?m also pretty sure that Uma recently underwent a major Botox and filler session. It can be BOTH, you know. It can be ?different makeup? AND ?injectibles.?

So far, the Venice Film Festival has been a snooze-fest as far as fashion goes. Most years, Venice gets some fashion girls, some bigger models and some bigger international stars on the red carpet? not so much this year. But here are some of the photos that I found interesting. Let?s start with Uma Thurman in this pleated Jenny Packham two-piece at the Chopard event over the weekend? how is it possible for such a naturally glamorous woman to look so? blah? I blame the dress. The dress is BAD. But the Chopard jewelry is fabulous. Finally! Some jewelry p0rn.
And here?s Uma at last night?s premiere of Nymphomaniac: Volume 2. I can?t find the designer ID. It?s not important. This dress sucks too.
Charlotte Gainsbourg is also in Venice to promote Nymphomaniac: Volume 2. Here are photos of CG at the photocall and premiere, plus one extra premiere from a few days ago. I think all of these outfits are Louis Vuitton. I know for sure that two of these outfits are LV, but I?m not sure about the leather boob-dress one. She?s really tight with LV?s current creative director Nicolas Ghesquire. He?s a long-time friend and she?s a long-time muse. The photocall outfit is cheap-looking but fine, I just hate those lace-up booties. UGH I HATE THEM. The leather boob dress is inappropriate but I like the beaded dress a lot.
And finally, here?s Catherine Deneuve in Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2014 Couture. I love Deneuve and she?s the fiercest grand dame of the French cinema. But this dress is a NOOOOooo. Luckily, Catherine was with her lovely daughter Chiara Mastroianni. Chiara wore Christian Dior Resort 2015 ? a cute little number. Chiara is beautiful, isn?t she? I remember when Chiara and Benicio del Toro were hot and heavy. That was a long time ago!
