In my coverage of Michelle Williams welcoming a new baby, I mentioned that I would be spending the weekend watching her new eight-part Hulu show. I lied. I didn?t spend the weekend watching Dying for Sex? because I watched the whole thing in one sitting the Friday night it premiered. It is SO GOOD. (And the episodes are only 30 minutes each.) The show is based on a true story about Molly Kochan, Michelle?s character, who sets out to explore her sexuality after getting a terminal cancer diagnosis. Heavy stuff, but the show is actually quite hilarious. It?s also refreshingly honest and matter-of-fact in the way the characters discuss their sexual desires, preferences, and disappointments. Michelle just spoke with The Hollywood Reporter to hype the series, and she had some really great answers when asked about filming all the sexual scenarios. Note: there are no spoilers excerpted below, but if you click the link the full interview has many.
There are so many sex scenes in this show. When you were first reading the script, which scene intimidated you most? Which one were you excited about and did that change when you were filming?
The scripts kept rolling in as we were filming, so we would be in the middle of an episode and then we would get a script for the next one. To be honest, at this point, I had watched the first two and then maybe three scripts roll in, and I had felt so enlivened after reading them. While maybe in my schooled brain, or I don?t know I would term it? it?s like the way you were habituated to think or maybe what you were taught or told as a child or an adolescent. The things that you?ve tried to free yourself from as a grown woman and also as a parent of a daughter, in my attempt to untangle myself from these ideas that were given to me so that I could break from that tradition and pass something different onto my own daughter.
Perhaps I heard a tiny little alarm bell twinkling in the back of my brain, saying, ?Oh, that might be embarrassing, or somebody might be upset with you, or what will so-and-so think?? But then my next thought was, ?Fantastic! This is exactly what I set out to do. I want to disconnect pleasure and shame.? That?s really one of the journeys that the character goes on, so can she experience something that?s meant for her that is pleasurable without feeling bad for it, or something that?s going to befall her because of it. So I really leapt wholeheartedly into these scenarios, whether they be in masturbatory sequences or partnered with these people that she meets along the way. I relish the written words and situations that Liz [Meriwether, showrunner] had laid out in front of us.

Michelle Williams always strikes me as so thoughtful and eloquent, and paring down her core emotional attraction to the show to ?I want to disconnect pleasure and shame,? is just splendidly concise. And profound. I mean, that?s it! That?s the whole game! Dying for Sex is definitely not Fifty Shades of Grey, nor is it maudlin, even as they don?t back down from presenting a candid portrait of dying (full confession: I sobbed for the entirety of the final episode). So with all that, it?s hard to convey just how funny and joyous the show is ? Michelle doesn?t get enough comedic roles, her timing and expressions were inspired! It?s also some of the best work I?ve ever seen Jenny Slate do, in the co-leading role of Molly?s best friend, Nikki, who Molly asks to be her primary caregiver. Or as Molly puts it in the first episode, ?I want to die with you.? (?And you?re sticking to that claim that it?s a funny show, Kismet?? ?Yes, yes I am!?) Anyway, enough of me trying to sell it. It feels like we haven?t seen a lot of Michelle Williams over the last few years. For one thing, I think she?s been a lot choosier about projects ever since Fosse/Verdon, the FX series where she won all the awards for her portrayal of Gwen Verdon. Since then she?s done, what? A contractually-obligated appearance in Venom 2, The Fabelmans, brilliantly narrated Britney Spears? memoir, and another FX series that?s out today on Hulu. Of course the other big reason why she?s been working less, is that she met her husband, Thomas Kail, on Fosse/Verdon. They got engaged, married, and pregnant in a whirlwind, with their first son Hart arriving in June 2020, followed by a second baby in the fall of 2022. And Michelle has 19-year-old daughter (yes, she really is all grown up!) Matilda from her relationship with Heath Ledger. But wait, there?s more! Fresh off of a flurry of promotion for her new show Dying For Sex, People Mag got the exclusive that Michelle and Thomas just welcomed their third baby via surrogate six weeks ago. Mazel Tov!
Michelle Williams has grown her family by one more.
The actress, 44, welcomed her fourth baby, her third with her director husband Thomas Kail, PEOPLE has learned. The family of six has been spotted around their New York neighborhood, and a source tells PEOPLE they welcomed their little one via surrogate six weeks ago.
?They couldn?t be happier to expand their family, and Matilda has been doting on her younger siblings,? the source says.
A rep for Williams could not be reached for comment.
The star, who took a brief work hiatus after the success of her last film The Fabelmans, is now flexing her comedic muscles and winning rave reviews for her new limited series Dying for Sex, which launches on Hulu on Friday, April 4.
Williams is already mom to daughter Matilda, 19, whom she shares with Heath Ledger. She also shares son Hart, 4, and a third baby born in 2022 with Kail.
In January 2023, Williams opened up to Entertainment Weekly about taking on one of her biggest roles in The Fabelmans after welcoming her third baby.
?My heart obviously belongs to my children; they tug at it the most,? she said. ?But I really want to be able to have both. And I think that it requires deep thought and learning and the support of other women to figure out how to get through it.?

What a happy surprise! And congrats again to Michelle and Thomas. I remember when Matilda was born, Michelle and Heath said they wanted five or six kids. And then as a single mom, Michelle got candid about wanting Matilda to have a sibling. So I?m happy for Michelle that she?s enjoying the family dynamic she?d been envisioning for years. Even if it means seeing her in fewer projects! But that makes the ones Michelle does say yes to all the meatier. And holy cow, Dying For Sex looks like it really packs a punch. Based on a 2020 Wondery podcast of the same name, it?s the true story of a woman, Molly Kochan, who embarks on a quest of sexual exploration and awakening after getting a terminal cancer diagnosis. (Note to all my breast friends: Molly reported a small lump to her doctor who dismissed it, saying she was ?too young to worry about cancer.? Six years later the lump had grown and the cancer had spread. Listen to your bodies and don?t suffer lousy doctors!) Vulture had a great article about the real life story and making of the series, and it sounds like a real celebration of friendship, taking risks for your own personal benefit, and honoring death. Honestly, it sounds like a lot! High comedy and intense emotion. I?ll be watching all eight episodes over the weekend. Is it weird that I might be more intrigued by how they tackle the dying part, as opposed to all the sex? (Dont answer that.)

Michelle Williams and Busy Philipps are an odd couple, yes? I don?t know them personally, obviously, but Michelle comes across as the quiet introvert who reads poetry, whereas Busy is the loud extrovert who reads People. Both are valid! You just kind of wonder what sparked the connection. Oh wait, I think I can start to answer my own question: they both share a tough, hustler core, from starting their respective showbiz careers as teenagers. Michelle often gets painted with a delicate persona, but she did legally emancipate herself at 15 in order to get more acting work. That takes some grit! Anyway, Busy is out promoting a new collaboration ? with California Pizza Kitchen, where she worked as a teen before being cast in Freaks and Geeks ? and she took a moment to wax poetic on the blessing of having a friend who?s been through thick and thin with her for 25 years:
?We just know each other and get each other in such a deep, fundamental way at this point,? the ?Girls5eva? star tells Page Six exclusively in a new interview.
Philipps notes that the pair have grown up together and ?been there through so many different moments in each other?s lives,? from the ?really wonderful ones? to those they thought they ?might never, ever recover from.?
She adds, ?When you have a friend like that, you?re blessed. Thats all you can really ever hope for in this life.?
Philipps, 45, and Williams, 44, met as co-stars on the sudsy ?90s and ?00s teen drama ?Dawson?s Creek? and have been BFFs ever since.
In fact, the ?Cougar Town? star is often the Oscar nominee?s plus-one at industry events.
?It makes it fun,? Williams told us at the 2022 Gotham awards.
?These things can be a little ? I don?t know if you ever really get used to being on a red carpet. It?s a little overwhelming, but then all of a sudden, I look over and see this gal, and I know whatever happens, we?re going to have a great time and laugh.?
Long before the duo were regular fixtures at Hollywood events, though, Philipps worked as a hostess at California Pizza Kitchen from the age of 15 until she landed her starring role in ?Freaks and Geeks.?
The former ?Busy Tonight? host swears she never grew tired of scarfing down the chain?s food ? not even while flying to the ?Dawson?s Creek? set in North Carolina.
?There was a CPK in the airport in Charlotte, and I would get my BBQ chicken pizza and eat it there on my layover,? she tells Page Six. ?And then I would get two of the Thai crunch salads and take them to Wilmington, and me and Michelle would eat it for lunch the next day.?
And so, Philipps freaked out when she got a call about teaming up with CPK again in honor of its 40th anniversary this year.
?The ad agency couldn?t believe that I knew the names of the CPK founders off the top of my head,? she shares with a laugh. ?I was like, ?Guys, I worked here for years!??

I gotta say, I was sorry E! gave up on Busy Tonight so fast. I think Busy is so well-suited to being an entertainment talk show host; she?s worked in the industry, knows how to laugh at herself and make others in the conversation comfortable, and she?s not afraid to dig into big topics. Also? Still knowing the founders names for CPK (or as we call the chain in my family, CaPiKi) 30 years later is crazy! As for her friendship with Michelle, they really have been through everything together. Marriages, babies, divorces, deaths, and attending Academy Awards. (Though Busy did get booted for Michelle?s recent nomination in 2023, when Michelle went with her husband instead.) For her part, Michelle should have ample opportunity to return the friend love to Busy, as she?s ramping up promotion for her new FX series, Dying For Sex, that comes out on Friday. I?m coming up on 20 years of friendship with my bestie, and yeah, there is no intimacy quite like it. Of course we?ve had plenty of fights, along with a few bouts of not speaking, but he?s still the first person I want to do things with, and he makes me laugh harder than anyone else. I?ve come to believe that finding your match in humor is really important.

Here are some photos of Michelle Williams at the Toronto International Film Festival, at the TIFF premiere of The Fabelmans. The Fabelmans is a barely-fictionalized account of Steven Spielberg?s childhood and family, and Michelle plays a version of Spielberg?s mother, who was musical, artistic and always encouraged him to follow his dreams of making movies. Michelle has spoken before about what an honor it was to be offered the role, to be directed by Spielberg as she played a version of his mother. Here?s the trailer for the movie:
It looks good and dare I say, very self-referential on Spielberg?s part. As in, he?s almost exclusively referencing his own oeuvre. Anyway, it?s clear that he still has a boyish idea of his parents as larger-than-life figures, and it?s also clear that Michelle is giving an awards-bait performance. The Fabelmans was produced under the Universal banner, and Universal was prepared to put a lot of money into Michelle?s Oscar campaign. But here?s the kicker: the studio wanted to submit Michelle for Best Supporting Actress. Now Michelle says that she?s submitting herself in the lead actress categories:
Not every race is what it seems, and so it goes with the first category decision of the season. Variety has confirmed Michelle Williams? work as the piano-playing mother in Steven Spielberg?s ?The Fabelmans? will be campaigned for the Oscars in best actress, instead of supporting as many pundits had speculated.
The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, won the prestigious People?s Choice Award and became the undisputed frontrunner in the early days of the awards season. One of the highlights of the cast was Williams? turn as Mitzi Fabelman, a lover of the arts who serves as an inspiration for her filmmaking son Sammy (played by newcomer Gabrielle LaBelle).
The acclaim for the semi-autobiographical story of Spielberg?s childhood was palpable in Toronto, with many seeing Williams? turn as a sure-fire ticket to her fifth career Oscar nomination, perhaps even a highly probable winner in supporting actress. The supporting actress field is now wide open for any of the cast from Sarah Polley?s ?Women Talking,? such as Jessie Buckley or Claire Foy.
Can Williams top the two presumed actress frontrunners, Michelle Yeoh, from ?Everything Everywhere All at Once? or Cate Blanchett from ?Tar??
It?s still up in the air whether Paul Dano, as Sammy?s father, will similarly campaign for leading attention. Co-star Judd Hirsch received the lion?s share of attention and could become the second-oldest performer ever nominated in supporting actor at 87.

Usually, category fraud goes in the other direction an actor will give a performance which is clearly more of a lead role, and they?ll put themselves up for supporting actor awards because they think it will be easier to win. A lot of cases of category fraud are not even the actors? calls though, it?s the studios making decisions about what kind of campaign they will pay for and how the film is promoted. This specific case, with Michelle, reads to me like the studio was on the fence and they were prepared to finance her supporting-actress campaign, but Michelle saw the film, saw her screen time and decided ?nope, I?m the lead.? It?s bold and it feels like she?s proudly gambling on herself. I?m proud of her for declaring herself the lead like that.

So many men think it is their god-given right to tell women what to do with their uteruses. Women arent having their BS. Such a man decided to come for Michelle Williams of Destinys Child after she posted a lighthearted video on Instagram discussing her upcoming book. This Instagram troll decided that he had had enough of Michelle Williams engaging with her fans. I guess he felt what she had to say was frivolous and that she needed to be pushing out babies. The following exchange is all women feeling frustrated with folks, mostly men, telling us we should offer our uteruses as a service to the world.
The Instagram troll began the exchange with:
Michelle I love you but you need some childrenu r 2 bored
Michelles clapback was quick indicating that she does not suffer fools lightly. Michelle wrote
You?re an idiot!!!! ??????
Not taking the hint to back off. The user responded to Michelles subtle warning by acting as if she hurt his feelings:
woooooooow that was uncalled for thank you ?
So Michelle, being the powerful woman that she is, schooled this fool-
No, what?s uncalled for is you telling a woman that she needs to have children. What if that woman CAN?T have children?? What if that woman DOESN?T WANT children. WATCH YOUR MOUTH and FINGERS.. Don?t you ever let that come out of your mouth or your fingers on a comment section again to ANYBODY. I would have ignored but too many people need tp stay out of a woman?s uterus!!! Now scram and be blessed!!!
Dude eventually apologized for his error and hopefully he learned a valuable lesson. However, what irks me about this exchange is how often it actually happens. I decided that I didnt want children at 21 and I have yet to change my mind about it at 44. But I had to constantly defend my decision to men and nosey old church women who thought I was being selfish by choosing not to bring children into the world. One guy even had the nerve to tell me it was my DUTY to carry on my race. Like really dude? I no longer apologize or explain my decision to anyone but wouldnt it have been ironic if I just COULDNT have children and not that I didnt WANT children? I have plenty of friends who have struggled for years to get pregnant. They are made to feel inadequate because they cannot have babies. That is why the recent stories of Meghan Markle and Chrissy Teigen having miscarriages are very important. It gives women the space and courage to openly discuss their struggles. I would also like to see more women talk about choosing NOT to have children and how their lives are fulfilled in other ways.
This policing of a womans body needs to stop. Like Michelle said, no one has the right to ever tell a woman what she should or should not do with her ovaries. Women have enough they need to deal with from day to day without having to deal with this antiquated ideal of feminine fulfillment being wrapped up in being a mother and a wife. That ideal must be deaded. Like 2020 deaded.
I am so glad my girl Michelle did not take any quarter with this loser. Let it be a warning to everyone who believes they have the right to tell a woman that she should have kids. Until women have the right to tell men what to do with their semen and penises, STFU and stay out of our uteruses.

Less than three months ago, we learned that Michelle Williams got herself a new man, and they were expecting a child. The announcement was completely out of character for Michelle she even did a ?photo shoot? exclusive with People Magazine to go along with the announcement. We soon learned why: Thomas Kail was likely the reason why Michelle?s marriage to Phil Elverum only lasted a matter of months, and Michelle was likely the reason why Thomas?s marriage fell apart last year as well. They had a torrid affair while working together on Fosse/Verdon, and Michelle got pregnant in September (?) of last year, several months after their thing started. Michelle also had a reason for announcing it when she did: she wanted to walk the awards show red carpets with Thomas, and she was visibly pregnant, etc.
Whatever happened, happened and Michelle ended up sweeping every major award for playing Gwen Verdon. She won the Emmy, the Golden Globe and the SAG Award and she made some brilliant speeches along the way. She also said that she hadn?t worked since Fosse/Verdon by choice, and there were stories that she really wanted to marry Kail before she had the baby. Well, it?s looks like it happened:

The pregnant Oscar nominee, 39, and the director, 43, sparked marriage speculation earlier this week when they were spotted wearing rings on their wedding fingers in photos obtained by the Daily Mail. Us confirmed in December 2019 that Williams and Kail were engaged after working together on FX?s Fosse/Verdon.

She went years without ever marrying any of those dudes she was with and then she marries two men in less than two years. It?s wild! But seriously, I was expecting Michelle and Thomas to slip away and get married, so this isn?t surprising. I doubt they did it during the pandemic either my guess is that they probably organized a quiet little wedding about a month ago, and the tabloids are only picking up on the wedding rings now.

Michelle Williams is pregnant and engaged to Thomas Kail, the primary director of Fosse/Verdon. They likely fell for each other during production, while they were both married. Michelle?s marriage to Phil Elverum fell apart soon after filming ended. We have no idea when Kail?s marriage ended, because Michelle?s PR team seems to be working overtime to whitewash everything across the board. Michelle?s team has been doing set-ups with People Magazine for the past week or so first it was the pregnancy announcement, complete with an exclusive photoshoot. Then they did a piece about her engagement ring, which is probably a pearl center stone (just like Emma Stone). Then Kail and Williams made their red carpet debut at the Golden Globes, so it?s time to put one big bow on all of this.
Michelle Williams has several reasons to look forward to 2020. The actress, 39, is fresh off her Golden Globe best actress in a mini-series win for Fosse/Verdon and will soon be expanding her family with fianc and Hamilton director Thomas Kail.
?Michelle fell in love,? a source tells PEOPLE in this week?s issue. ?She is happy and fulfilled and ready for another child.?
Williams and Kail, 42, worked together on the FX series Fosse/Verdon, in which the Tony Award winner directed the actress. The couple walked the Golden Globe Awards red carpet together where Williams kept her baby bump under wraps in a one-shoulder peach-colored Louis Vuitton gown. A source confirmed to PEOPLE in late December Williams was pregnant and engaged to Kail. Williams? daughter with the late Heath Ledger, Matilda, 14, played matchmaker, the source added.
Her new romance comes more than a year after Williams married indie musician Phil Elverum during the summer of 2018. The two quietly separated in early 2019.

Thank the lord that People finally got around to mentioning poor Phil! But my question is? how can Michelle be in a ?new romance? is she?s already pregnant enough to be showing? And how did Matilda set up her mom with Kail when Michelle and Kail were married to other people when they met? SO many questions, I guess we?ll never know! Props to Michelle?s team though, they?ve got it to the point where only gossip bloggers like me are grumbling about it. The official story isn?t being questioned or side-eyed at all by the public at large.

By the time Michelle Williams came onto the carpet, I had forgotten that I was actually waiting to see her. We knew that she announced her surprise pregnancy last week, ahead of the Golden Globes, because she didn?t want to suddenly debut her bump out of nowhere. But wow, what a rollout. Michelle walked the carpet with her (still-married?) lover Thomas Kail, who directed her in Fosse/Verdon. They were both married when they worked together. Her marriage fell apart soon after. We don?t know when his marriage fell apart. It does look like Michelle is about five months pregnant, I would say. So? the math is there. Hilariously, some Getty photos ID Thomas as ?Phil Elverum.? Nope. And for old time?s sake, Michelle brought Busy Philipps along as her second date too.
Michelle?s look here was Louis Vuitton and honestly? I don?t hate it. When she was single, she wandered around red carpets looking like a Civil War ghost and/or a retro widow, and now that she?s in love and knocked up, it?s all about soft, creamy orange? The message has been received.
People are still talking about Michelle?s Globes victory well-deserved for Fosse/Verdon and her speech, where she spoke about a woman?s right to choose.
CB tweeted that it felt like Michelle was making a convoluted argument that every woman has the right to make reproductive choices and/or slay as many married dudes as they want. Which? is true. Women should be 100% free to make all of those choices for themselves.
I feel like Lucy Boynton was trying to do a Michelle Williams thing and maybe Lucy pulled it off better than MW! She also wore Louis Vuitton? I mean, it?s just tin foil, but it sort of works. She?s an actress in her own right, but she attended as her boyfriend Rami Malek?s date.
