I think the only movie I?ve ever seen with Amber Heard is Magic Mike: XXL. Is that enough to judge her acting skills? Probably not, but I still think she?s a charisma vacuum. Maybe she?s different in person, and I think it?s very possible she?s even more beautiful in person. But she has the on-screen presence of a damp dishrag. It?s no surprise to me that her career is sort of in a holding pattern of fifth-credited leads and whatever Johnny Depp can get her. So how is that Amber Heard deserves the December cover of Marie Claire? That?s a great question. She?s the like the fourth credited person in The Danish Girl! That?s why she?s on the cover. It should be noted that Alicia Vikander is the co-lead, along with Eddie Redmayne, and that most critics believe Alicia will be nominated for an Oscar. Still, here?s Amber on the cover of Marie Claire.
On her life: ?I?ve been on the road or on the run since I was 16?. A horse became a bike, a bike became a car, a car became a plane,” Heard explains. And now, when I ask her if she likes flying, she looks puzzled. “It’s like walking, I guess,” she says. “It’s just how I get around.”
On rumors of her separation from Depp: ?I try not to react to the horrible misrepresentation of our lives, but it is strange, and hard.?
On being a stepmother: ?[It is] an honor and the greatest, most surprising gift I have ever received in my life … I feel new flavors that I didn?t know existed. New colors that I didn?t know existed have been added to my life. I?m so happy.?
On being limited by her looks: “I wish I didn’t have to pick between being seen as sexually viable and something more substantial.”
On gay rights: “No matter what people want to label me as, I still fight for equality, and I think popular opinion will catch up. I think it already has, actually. I think our generation sees themselves as part of a larger global community, and therefore, it’s harder to enact basic tribalistic prejudices based on ignorance and hate.”
On her strong work ethic: “You respect what it takes to earn it [money], and it also gives you a certain resilience, because it minimizes this false notion that that’s what matters. I know that to not be true, and I know I’m fine without it. That’s why maybe I’m so independent. I never expect anyone to give me anything?the notion of someone supporting me would be absurd to me.”

?I wish I didn’t have to pick between being seen as sexually viable and something more substantial?? Don?t get me wrong, I get it. I think that?s a problem so many actresses face. But again, she has the on-screen presence of a dishrag. Producers aren?t breaking down her door with quality scripts for a reason! Why hire Amber Heard when you could hire Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, Alicia Vikander, etc? Also, I love that she?s so insistent that she?s not with Johnny Depp because he?s rich. I sort of believe that. She?s with Scarfy so he?ll help her career.

The ?Rum Diary? dame shares what it?s like playing stepmom to husband Johnny Depp?s teenage children- ?"[It's] an honor and the greatest, most surprising gift I have ever received in my life ... I feel new flavors that I didn't know existed. New colors that I didn't know existed have been added to my life. I'm so happy."

Here are some photos of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard at last night?s BFI London Film Festival premiere of Black Mass. Amber wore her hair in curls (looks nice) and she got all decked out in this lingerie-looking Dolce & Gabbana. I don?t really think this is dressy enough for the outing, but she looks fine. I mean, compared to Depp? she looks fine. If you can get past Depp?s three diamond hoop earrings, vest, three necklaces, lifts (seriously, look at those shoes) and what I think is an old-fashioned pocket watch with a chain, then maybe you?ll notice that he?s still looking kind of bloated.
You know what surprises me a little bit? That Amber hasn?t gotten pregnant. I know she thought that marrying him would be great for her career (she was wrong), and she really thought she would be working non-stop, but I thought she would get pregnant sooner rather than later. Guess I was wrong! Anyway, Depp has a new interview with The Telegraph ? you can read the full piece here. He chats about Whitey Bulger, his relationship with Vanessa Paradis and some weirdness with some of his real estate holdings.
Depp wanted to meet Bulger: “I made a request through his attorney to sit down with him to attempt to sponge some mannerisms and voice and take as much as I could from him. I wasn’t interested in asking him about his crimes or anything like that, I just wanted some personal idiosyncrasies. But I got the message back to say Jimmy had declined my visit because of his dislike for the book and especially his dislike for the two Boston Globe reporters who had nagged him for 20 years.”
He sees the humanity in Bulger: “What attracted me to Jimmy Bulger were the various facets of his personality and his humanity because I felt that the only way I could approach playing a character like him was to find his human side first and then map that out to see where it took the turn. He was a very complicated man. I think there’s a very sensitive side to him and he could be a caring, lovely family man who worshipped his brother and was very loyal to the community. There was something poetic about what he was able to do, being a proud Irish immigrant, loyal to his neighbourhood, a great caregiver to his mother and very close to his brother. But his business was violence. He would take old ladies’ groceries to their house and 10 minutes later he would crush someone’s skull. So I walked the tightrope to show a very dark side but at the same time a human, caring side.”
His relationship with Paradis: ?Vanessa and I get along wonderfully. There?s no weirdness at all and no hostility. Life happens and we spent 14 great years together and have raised a couple of kids who we are both incredibly proud of.”
His daughter Lily-Rose becoming a celebrity/model/actress at 15: “What is happening with Lily-Rose is something I didn’t expect this early, for sure. But things happen when they happen. Her becoming an actress was never my hope or dream for her but that’s what she enjoys doing. So I am very proud of her because she is super together and a sharp, sharp kid. She tells me everything and if she needs any advice I am there. But yeah, it’s happening pretty fast and when I see her with all that make-up and stuff, it’s disturbing.”
The huge property he owns in France: “I don’t know why it was ever put up for sale. It was never my idea, so I had it pulled off the market. The place has been very good to me and I watched my babies grow up there. I don’t believe I could ever let it go, because when I become smoke I would love for them to have their kids there.”
He?s still a rock star, man: “Music is still part of my life. But I hate the idea of people coming to see me play the guitar because they’ve seen me in movies. You want people who are listening to be only interested in the music.”
He just wants simplicity: “Simplicity, that’s what I want. It’s been a rare commodity for me for a number of years, but I enjoy being able to hang out with my girl, read the newspaper and sit back and start to read a book by someone I admire like Lawrence Krauss or Christopher Hitchens. And that’s it ? simplicity, where the game of Hollywood doesn’t exist.”

The kind of simplicity one can only get from endless scarves, necklaces, chained pocket watches, vests, earrings, bracelets, rings, rat-chewed hats and more scarves. Amber Heard and Johnny Depp are still married, shockingly. They’ll stay married for a few years at least. Amber enjoys the status, and Johnny enjoys knowing he has a much younger wife. Johnny is in Australia finishing Pirates 5. He keeps visiting children’s hospitals, which may be his way of making us forget all about his embarrassing behavior. Johnny has a good heart, but I think he likes being Jack Sparrow because he never has to break out of character. Johnny can stagger around and act drunk, and no one will ever know if he’s actually wasted or simply acting. He’s probably also bored out of his mind.
Johnny can take comfort in this OK! report (via Radar) that says his lovely bride, Amber Heard, has changed her name to Amber Depp:
Over five months after she got hitched to Johnny Depp in a tropical paradise, Amber Heard is scrambling to repair their rocky relationship.
Her first order of business? The 29-year-old is proving her commitment to Depp, 52, by changing her last name.
“She?s keeping her maiden name professionally, but legally, she has changed it to Depp,” an insider tells OK!. “It?s her way of trying to prove to him that she?s in it for the long haul.”
So far, so good, notes the insider. “Things have calmed down — they?re not fighting and really seem happy!”

This report is probably accurate, although OK! didn’t even need a real source to confirm. Amber would love to be known as Mrs. Depp, but she’ll keep her own name professionally so she can feel like she wins roles on her own merits. Depp is an awesome last name even if it evokes mental images of scarfy closets.
Oh, this is funny. Amber was served with an Australian summons to appear in court over Terriergate. She’ll have to answer questions about why she smuggled Boo and Pistol into the country without following quarantine procedures. Perhaps Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce didn’t take kindly to how Amber called him a fame seeker.

Here’s Amber Heard at the UK premiere of Magic Mike XXL. Her dress is Emilio Pucci with ruffles to spare. The color is gorgeous, but the halter neck and all the fussy details make this dress look too fancy for a stripper movie. Amber wants the world to take her seriously, so she wore a serious dress. Johnny Depp didn’t make it to the premiere. He’s still pouting in Australia on the set of Pirate 5, where a capuchin monkey attacked his makeup artist.
Amber has a new interview with the Sunday Times. She talks about the reversed gender roles in this film and why she came out as bisexual:
“At that time I didn?t know of anyone else in my position who was a working female lead actress. I don?t want to have to deny my sexuality in order to be me. But I don?t want to have to be defined by it. I?m fundamentally opposed to trying to edit myself to be palatable or popular. I don?t give a f***. I fight, but I shouldn?t have to.”
Heard also admitted re-writing her lines for Magic Mike to suggest that her character was bisexual and enjoyed the film?s “reversed gender roles.”
“It?s a film about men seeking sexual attention,” she said. “It gives the power position to women. My character?s function has nothing to do with her sexuality.”

Amber came out in 2010. At the time, the internet acted like it was a huge scandal, but it shouldn’t have been a big deal. Media outlets still make a huge fuss out of it. Countless tabloid stories have referred to Amber as a “bisexual beauty” as if that’s the only way to describe her. The Independent even refers back to Jeremy Clarkson’s intro on Top Gear: “Yes, it?s true, nobody has ever heard of her, but she is bisexual and she likes guns and muscle cars.” He’s so rude.

Here are some candid photos of Amber Heard at LAX on Friday afternoon. She paused to sign some autographs for adoring fans, which isn’t surprising. She graciously dealt with an overzealous male fan outside her NYC hotel last week. Amber is gorgeous.
We sort-of poke fun at Amber for capitalizing on Johnny Depp’s fame while accusing others of doing the same. I think Amber may be fame hungry, but she’s also under a microscope. People question her affectionate selfies with others, but she swiftly manages miracle joint appearances with the hubby. Amber is defending her marriage. This is from her recent Elle interview (where she also claimed to repeatedly fall in love with Johnny). Some excerpts:
The marriage: “We have a fairly normal, um [relationship]. I guess, we do our best. He has his life, and I have mine, and our challenge is to be able to find time to be together. We’re very happy. Very.”
On tabloid rumors: “I’m already probably pregnant and divorced. It’s been a month, so clearly there’s some trouble. Clearly I’m pregnant, or clearly it’s great and we’re buying ponies.”
Amber won’t be distracted: “Ironically, the people with whom I choose to share my life or by whom I’m compelled just so happen to be unwitting proponents, like a distracting force. I’m in a very similar type of situation and have my career that I’ve been working hard for now, and yet I still am constantly confronted with these forces that can distract or deflect from where I see my real work.”

Amber makes solid points. It must be extremely difficult to maintain a marriage where both parties travel for work. Most working actors only spend a few weeks at home before jetting off to the next location. Matters grow more difficult when both parties work on opposite sides of the globe. I don’t envy Amber’s position. She’s in a lose-lose situation with the press, and Johnny may have a serious alcohol problem.
The newest issue of the Enquirer says Disney execs are fed up with Johnny’s behavior on the Pirates 5 production. He leaves the set for legit and sketchy reasons. Execs reportedly told Johnny to “get his act together” because “the movie is millions over budget and behind schedule. It’s becoming a fiasco!” The tabloid says Johnny hired a sober coach. If this story is true, Johnny needs to tell Amber to stop badmouthing Australia to the press too.

Amber Heard covers the July issue of Elle in a malliot swimsuit, 1980s hair combo that looks straight out of a Jane Fonda workout video. The editorial is much better. Amber’s promoting her role in Magic Mike XXL. She’s also promoting her marriage to Johnny Depp. I don’t mean that as shade. Amber talks about Johnny with Elle. Johnny used to sleepily interrupt her interviews, and Amber does leak gossip to her friends (to test them). But she has never discussed their relationship with a magazine until now.
Amber also spends a chunk of the interview complaining about fame and her career. She’s made no secret of wanting to be Action Jolie and disliking “hot” roles. Now Amber’s discussing all of the scripts she has to reject. It’s interesting:
On her marriage to Johnny: “I fall in love again and again. Nothing is a dramatic change. We’ve been together for a long time now, so it’s been a fairly organic process. I have a fiercely independent spirit.”
On the dearth of female roles: “I get a stack of scripts, like, once a month, and most of the time, you find these placeholder girls that are there to provide a bounce for the male character. So we know he’s funny because she’s serious and she’s mad at him. We know he’s strong because she needs saving. So really her job is to validate this personality trait of our hero or male. I mean we’re trying to imitate life, and it seems to me a deeply saddening injustice that we are so uncreative and uninterested in developing representations of female life.”
She hates being placed in a Barbie box: “I feel like I’m constantly fighting against my exterior, or this exterior presentation of myself because of how I look or perhaps because of who I’m with.”
Her fear of fame: “The thing that really scares me is the potential of losing my freedom. I never want for my life to lose the ability to transverse the world, with freedom and ease. The freedom and ease I have worked so hard to acquire for myself.”

Piles of scripts. That’s the part that throws Amber’s story off. Everyone knows that female roles in Hollywood are rarely as meaty as men’s roles But Amber tossed in a visual to represent how in demand she is as an actress. She’s promoting Magic Mike XXL, not high art. Maybe I’m reading too much into it. She’s pretty tough in a few movies (All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and Syrup) and has a sultry appeal, but Amber is not an amazing actress. She can turn on the charm or appear cold as ice. Those are her two onscreen modes.
I don’t know when the Elle interview happened, but it also feels like damage control. Amber’s never been open about her private life. Why now?
