There?s a wonderful episode of 30 Rock where, because of shenanigans, Liz Lemon has to pretend to be pregnant to cover for Jack?s wife. Liz Lemon got manipulated into doing a ?pregnancy photoshoot,? and the result was excellent comedy:
That?s what Halle Berry was doing over the weekend at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball. Halle made sure to pose like a pregnant lady, with her hands gently pulling our eyes down to her ?baby bump.? Except that after everyone was like, ?Damn, is she pregnant at the age of 50,? Halle sent her rep out to deny the pregnancy story flatly. So what?s really going on?
My guess is that Halle was just being weird and/or thirsty? Maybe she just wanted some attention. It could have been some kind of performance art, just to see if people would get hysterical if she did a ?pregnancy pose.? Or maybe she honestly didn?t know people pose like that while pregnant?? Also: as for the father of this phantom baby, TMZ?s sources say that Halle isn?t really dating anyone right now anyway. Hm.
Halle?s only comment was this Instagram:

Here are some photos of Halle Berry at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball over the weekend. I swear, I looked through these photos on Sunday and I thought, ?she looks nice in that color, maybe if it?s slow, I?ll write about her outfit.? I swear I really did look through the pics and I really didn?t notice anything other than the dress. But look at how Halle is positioning herself in several of these photos. Look at the way she?s ?cradling? her midsection. Look at the small but visible ?bump.? Halle seems to want us to see that bump. Halle Berry is 50 years old. And now some people are like, ?Damn, is she preggo????
To be fair, few of us really expected Halle to announce her pregnancy the last time, when she was pregnant with son Maceo. She was 46-47 during that pregnancy, which happens sometimes – some ladies will have a fertility spike pre-menopause, in their 40s. I always believed that was what happened with Maceo too – I didn?t think Halle had fertility treatments, and I don?t even believe that she and Olivier Martinez were trying to have a baby. So did that happen again?
It seems strange to be bump-watching a 50-year-old woman – although, let?s face it, people are still doing that sh-t to Jennifer Aniston – but to be clear, people are talking about it because of the way Halle was posing. If she hadn?t been like ?look at my little bump,? I think most people would have just gone with the ?Halle wore a silver dress to a charity event, looked great? angle.
As for who allegedly put a baby in there, your guess is as good as mine. _(?)_/
Update: Halle’s rep tells Extra that Halle is not knocked up. So why the pose? No one knows.

Yes, as I said yesterday, I?m very into Halle Berry?s Oscar hair. Maybe it?s a wig, maybe she just spent hours getting her hair to look like this, whatever it is, I don?t care. I love it. I love that she went big and crazy and I love the way it looks around her face. It?s amazing. Halle had the same hair at the Vanity Fair Oscar party, only she switched up her Versace dresses. I loved her Oscar Versace and I really like this fun little cocktail Versace. She?s really killing it these days.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley also wore Versace, and she walked the VF carpet with her man, Jason Statham, and a prominent baby bump. Rosie is glowing. So pretty!
Kate Hudson in Cavalli Couture. She?s done something different to her face, right? I?m not just imagining that? Anyway, I don?t have strong feelings about this Cavalli – it was beige/neutral and that was the trend this year. The design sucks though. It looks like she?s wearing an apron made out of pantyhose.
Scarlett Johansson wore another Azzedine Alaa dress for the VF party – this, to me, feels like her ?ScarJo: After Dark? look. I don?t like it.
Dakota Johnson in Gucci. Yet another example of someone saving the better dress for the after-parties. Dakota had no business in that sad Oscar dress – she should have worn this to the Oscars instead.

SHUT YOUR MOUTH, I LOVE THIS. I really do. Twitter blew up last night when Halle Berry arrived on the Oscar red carpet in this Versace and what looked like a backwards wig. First of all, the only thing wrong with the wig is that it distracted from what was actually one of the best gowns of the night! This Versace is really beautiful and flattering. Second of all, are we absolutely positive that this is a wig? Halle?s been growing out her hair for a few years, and I actually think the lopsided ?wig? effect is a genuine hairstyle designed to telegraph the fact that Halle has no f–ks to give. In any case, I love it, from lopsided curls down to the ground. She?s wearing everything like she?s having fun too.
After that entire controversy involving Karl Lagerfeld and accusations of cheapness, Meryl Streep didn?t even walk the Oscars red carpet to show off her custom Elie Saab! I guess I don?t blame her, really. She?s Meryl Streep, she got an Oscar nomination for a cheeseball performance and she got a standing ovation for just showing up, basically. As for this Elie Saab? it?s actually a pantsuit/gown hybrid. I would dislike this on someone else, but it sort of works on Meryl.

Woe are the beautiful women of Hollywood. No one understands how they suffer. When a beautiful woman comes into a casting call, every door shuts in her face. I know that because so many beautiful actresses complain about how difficult it is for them to be beautiful. Jessica Biel has complained, as has Charlize Theron. And now it?s Halle Berry?s turn! To be fair, the context of Halle?s comments does make this a little less egregious. Halle was profiled as one of the many October covers for W Magazine, and she starts out talking about her early years in the beauty pageant system (where she was eventually NOT crowned Miss USA). Then it goes from there. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:
How she got into the beauty pageant life: ?Actually, my boyfriend at the time wanted a beauty pageant girlfriend. So he entered me and I got this letter in the mail saying, “You are a finalist in the Miss Team Ohio,” and I thought “Uh, what is this?” And then he told me, “Oh, by the way, I sent your prom picture in and now you have to go.” So I took my prom dress–It was quite taffeta, hoop skirt, off the shoulders, almost like I was getting married–and I went to this contest, thought it was fun, and I ended up winning. And once you start winning these things it’s like a snowball. And you have to go to the next one and if you when there you go to the next one, and I kept winning all the way until the Miss USA pageant where I did not win. I was first runner up to Christy Fichtner. And that ended my beauty pageant career.
Beauty pageant talent: ?I had no talent. We didn’t have to have the talent. [In] Miss America you need a talent. Miss USA you’re talentless. You just show up. Thank god I didn’t have to sing.?
She never wanted to play ?the gorgeous girl?: ?Yeah. It was intentional to not play the gorgeous girl. I came from the world of beauty pageants and modeling and right away when people heard that I got discounted as an actor. So, I had the job of trying to eliminate that part of my persona, and Spike [Lee] gave me a chance to do that. And I took on roles early on that really didn’t rely on my physical self at all and that was a good way to sort of get some credibility within my industry.?
Beauty adversity: ?With Monsters Ball, Lee Daniels didn’t want to see me read. He was actually disgusted by the thought. He thought there’s no way and my argument to him was, just because someone looks a certain way doesn’t mean that they are spared adversity. Adversity does not discriminate. I thought, “My looks haven’t spared me one hardship or one hurt moment or one painful situation. So please, you know, give me a shot at this.” I said, “I often think it’s more interesting when you see someone that looks a certain way struggle in ways that you wouldn’t think they would be struggling with.” He ultimately gave me a chance and that sort of changed the course of my career in so many ways.

?Adversity does not discriminate.? I get what she?s saying. Someone beautiful can still have a terrible marriage and a sh-tty job. Someone beautiful can still be mistreated, assaulted or worse. We all have struggles, even beautiful people. But! So many of these beautiful women ? Halle, Charlize, Jessica Biel ? rarely understand that their lives have always been blessed in a different way because of their bubble of beauty privilege. Sure, Halle had to argue, beg and plead for a chance to audition for a role. But what about all of the (less attractive) women who never got in the door because they didn?t have the ?name? of an actress who get a film greenlighted? And why couldn?t those women make a name for themselves? Because they didn?t get the roles before that, because they were pretty enough, or compelling enough on screen, or watchable, or ?hot.?

Halle Berry was the first woman of color to ever win the Best Actress Oscar. She won in 2002 for Monster?s Ball. And Halle is still the only woman of color to ever win for Best Actress, although Gabourey Sidibe, Viola Davis and Quvenzhan Wallis have all been nominated for Best Actress in the years since Halle?s win, and many people (me) believed that Viola was robbed. In the past few weeks, Halle has been silent about #OscarsSoWhite, but she attended the Makers Conference this week and she did a Q&A session with Kevin Huvane. Here?s what she said:
?Honestly, that win almost 15 years ago was iconic,? she told CAA?s Kevin Huvane. ?It was important to me, but I had the knowing in the moment that it was bigger than me. I believed that in that moment, that when I said, ?The door tonight has been opened,? I believed that with every bone in my body, that this was going to incite change because this door, this barrier, had been broken. And to sit here almost 15 years later, and knowing that another woman of color has not walked through that door, is heartbreaking. It?s heartbreaking, because I thought that moment was bigger than me. It?s heartbreaking to start to think maybe it wasn?t bigger than me. Maybe it wasn?t. And I so desperately felt like it was.?
?It?s really about truth telling,? added Berry ?And as filmmakers and as actors, we have a responsibility to tell the truth. And the films, I think, that are coming out of Hollywood aren?t truthful. And the reason they?re not truthful, these days, is that they?re not really depicting the importance and the involvement and the participation of people of color in our American culture.?

Yeah, I?ll throw shade at Halle for a lot of things, but I think she?s completely on target here. In that moment, when she won, she really did believe that her win was a watershed moment for Hollywood diversity. She really believed that she was one part of breaking the glass ceiling for women of color. And I buy that her disappointment is genuine, that here in 2016, she really doesn?t want to be the only woman of color to ever win a Best Actress Oscar.
