He?s no stranger to humanitarian efforts, and George Clooney is once again using his celebrity for a good cause.
The ?Ocean?s Eleven? stud gave an interview on the ?Today? show this morning in which he called for diplomacy efforts in Darfur to help prevent more genocide.
Clooney explained, ?I think it can be stopped. We stopped [the previous Darfur conflict] in 2005 with diplomacy. We didn?t stop it with soldiers. So, yes, if we get involved now, we have a shot.?
"It doesn't matter what I believe, because obviously I'm an actor. The Secretary of State said it's a ticking time bomb. The CIA said this is the next genocide if we're not careful ? it is the biggest risk. The president has said as much. Everyone acknowledges that this is what is going to take place if someone doesn't moderate and mediate. ? I'm just trying to say it as loud as possible."

George Clooney is in the midst of another trip to Sudan. He has been to the area? I believe this is his third trip? Clooney went with a team of people including NBC?s Ann Curry. They traveled not to the refugee camps in the western part of Sudan, where the Janjawid have carried out a systemic pattern of rape and genocide, but to Southern Sudan, where a vote determining the area?s independence is going to be held in several months. Southern Sudan has seen much of the same campaign of genocide, the genocide has become synonymous with ?Darfur? - the western-most province. These photos were tweeted by Ann Curry.
American actor George Clooney is visiting the little known region of Southern Sudan. The U.N. Security Council arrived to a raucous welcome on Wednesday, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum also made a recent trip here.
The high-level visits are putting the spotlight on the Texas-sized area of Sudan that is far less known to Americans than the western region of Darfur, where mass atrocities have been committed over the last decade. Southern Sudan is three months from a Jan. 9 independence vote that could see Africa’s largest country break in two. The vote — and the potential of a new north-south war because of it — are the reason behind the rash of visits.
“If you knew a tsunami, or Katrina or a Haiti earthquake was coming, what would you do to save people?” Clooney said, according to a blog post by Ann Curry, a reporter for NBC who is accompanying Clooney.
Clooney spent the past week traveling to remote, conflict-prone areas of Sudan’s south with John Prendergast, the founder of the Enough Project, an anti-genocide advocacy group. One photo posted by Curry showed Clooney pointing over a field that Curry wrote was the site of a mass grave from 2008. That was in Abyei, a town that was largely burned to the ground after southern and northern armies clashed there, prompting an estimated 60,000 people to flee. The U.N. reported at the time that at least 140 people died.
Clooney, who declined a request for comment, also visited the town of Malakal, where elements of Sudan’s northern and southern armies have clashed twice since the end of the 21-year north-south civil war in 2005.
The group of Americans also talked to villagers in Lul, an area where Human Rights Watch recently documented killings and rapes by southern soldiers against civilians who opposed the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement.
When the U.N. Security Council arrived Wednesday, school children lined the streets and hundreds of people at the airport chanted a greeting to America’s U.N. ambassador, Susan Rice. The group also chanted “Welcome, welcome ICC,” a reference to the International Criminal Court that has indicted Sudan’s president for war crimes in the western region of Darfur. Rice is known for her hardline views on how the U.S. should deal with the northern government, which is headed by President Omar al-Bashir.
The Security Council plans to meet with Southern Sudan President Salva Kiir but will not meet with al-Bashir. Members will also assess preparations for the Jan. 9 independence vote in Southern Sudan and a separate vote that day in the oil-rich region of Abyei.
Officials from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington spent two weeks in Southern Sudan to assess the likelihood that mass violence will break out following the January vote. Mike Abramowitz, the director of genocide prevention at the museum, said “the next year is a very dangerous time for the civilians in Sudan.”
“It is very hard to predict genocide. However, there are warning signs, many of which are present in Sudan,” Abramowitz told The Associated Press last weekend. “Today there is an opportunity to avoid calamity, with sufficient international focus and pressure brought to bear on both southern and — particularly — northern leaders.”
In a speech last week, Kiir said that he and his people have experienced “the anguish of war” and do not want to return to conflict.
[From The Associated Press via HuffPo]
You learn something new everyday - I was completely unaware of this issue. The issue of the vote, that is. I was very aware of the genocide. I also find it interesting that Clooney?s trip is being bracketed with the trip for the UN Security Council. Of course, I also find it interesting that Elisabetta Canalis didn?t come along. I?m a gossip, after all.

I was totally and completely lost for this week’s headliner Hot Guy this week. And then it occurred to me - Motherf-ckin’ George Clooney! Not the Clooney that we’re forced to look at these days, the Clooney with the weird, oddly worked-on face, the strange toupee-looking hair, and the open relationships with (alleged) coke whores. No, I thought we’d do the Classic Cloon. The vintage Clooney, the one everyone loved because he didn’t know what a f-cking kinky, cheesy, escort-loving bastard he was yet. We thought he was cool. We thought he was hot. And he was! Remember Out of Sight? Still one of my favorite movies, and Clooney has never looked or been any better than that. So peruse the vintage section, at your leisure. Added bonus: Clooney has lots of hot guy friends!

| George Clooney Brad Pitt 'prank' each other with male prostitutes (update) | Added 14 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Any story with the words ?George Clooney,? ?Brad Pitt,? and ?male escort? is going to be good. This one comes via Life & Style?s ?Scene Queens? - they claim that Brad and George?s years-long prank-fest has gone to a whole new level. Allegedly, they?re paying male escorts in advance to ?show up? on their film sets:
One perk to being an A-lister is being able to pull pranks on your famous friends that mere mortals could never get away with.
Life & Style?s Scene Queens have learned that the prank wars between Brad Pitt and George Clooney have escalated to where both men are spending thousands to one up each other.
Their latest practical joke is downright naughty!
?Brad and George are sending each other an endless stream of male escorts while each is on set,? an insider tells the Scene Queens. ?They will pay them in advance on a credit card to make sure the escort shows up.?
The battle between the two of them has been ongoing for years.
?A few years ago Brad offered a $1,000 to people to get them to pee in the vents George Clooney?s car,? an insider tells the Scene Queens. ?George came right back and offered $5,000 to pepper spray Brad?s car and paint it orange.?
[From Life & Style]
??And that?s how Clooney met Canalis? - so the story goes. Brad paid Elisabetta by credit card, and Clooney fell in love. You know I?m right.
Honestly, though, I?ve always thought that Clooney was kind of in love with Brad. This is probably just Clooney?s way of broaching ?the subject? with Brad. Buy him a male hooker, see what happens.
Update: Clooney’s rep tells GossipCop that none of these pranks are accurate. He said “not one of those pranks is true.” He probably added “amateurs” under his breath. Their real pranks are probably much worse.

| George Clooney Eli's Sardinia trip turns into a happy photo op | Added 14 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Yesterday, I put up People Magazine?s story about George Clooney going to Sardinia to visit Elisabetta Canalis? parents. Some of you took issue with my designation of her ?cokewhore? status, and for that, I apologize. I mean, if the shoe fits, etc, but CB wants me to stop calling Eli that until we have confirmation both of her hooker status, and of her years of cocaine use, something more than Eli?s former hooker friends calling her a cokehead prostitute/escort to rich men, I guess. Anyway, we have some of the photos of Clooney and Eli out and about in Sardinia. Gee, I wonder how in the world the paparazzi knew to go to Sardinia? I wonder how they knew the exact location Clooney and Eli would be so that they could set up their cameras right in front of where they were walking?
Maybe I?m bothered by how happy they look. Fame Pictures notes: ?Clooney and Canalis were all smiles as they strolled hand in hand, and it appeared things were going very well as he met her family for the first time. The duo stayed in her family’s country home for the first few nights before sneaking off to the exclusive Hotel Villa Las Tronas for a romantic night.? Damn?Eli either really has the goods on Clooney (my theory about him killing a hobo still stands), or they are really happy together. WHY? I just don?t get it. What do they have to talk about? Or are they all coked up in these photos? I hate to admit it, but they just look happy and sober and like they?re enjoying their time together. That Eli certainly is playing it well. Damn her.

| George Clooney's lack of promotion for 'The American' won the box office | Added 14 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

|
|
|
These are some additional photos of George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis last Thursday. This paparazzi-friendly photo op was pretty much the only ?promotion? Clooney did as an actor to promote The American, which came out last Wednesday. He didn?t do any big interviews, no magazine profiles, no premieres, no film festivals. It was just some pap photos, an appearance at the Emmys to pick up the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, and lots of commercials for the film. That?s it. And he won the weekend box office! CB and I thought The American was going to tank, and I really though Machete would do much better (it came in second). However, according to Deadline Hollywood, it?s not all good news:
1. The American (Focus Features) NEW [2,823 Theaters] Opened Wed
Friday $3.8M, Saturday $4.9M, 3-Day Weekend $13.3M, Est 4-Day Holiday $16.1M, Est Cume $19.2M
This is the way a Clooney picture should be sold from now on. Even though early exits show that attendance was partly driven by the “George Clooney factor”, he just can’t muster wide domestic appeal even if he is still a big name on the international scene. Focus Features marketed Clooney’s The American to his core +35 adult audience as the more cerebral and sophisticated choice that was a counterprogramming alternative to the summer’s mindless crap. (Focus did the same with 2005’s The Constant Gardener.) Problem is, moviegoers didn’t like what they saw: the CinemaScore was a poor “D-”. Focus execs say Control helmer Anton Corbijn’s performance exceeded internal projections which undoubtedly it did. But a star of Clooney’s status should be able to muster a better 6-day opening than just $16.1M — and didn’t.
[From Deadline Hollywood]
I kind of think that an estimated 6-day opening of $19 million with absolutely no exertion is still kind of awesome - it speaks to Clooney?s die-hard fan base, and also the wisdom of the adult moviegoer. Of course, there are still questions: why did Clooney not do anything for the film? Lainey at LaineyGossip is wondering aloud if there?s some kind of story/gossip to go along with it, but there?s always the possibility that though reviewers didn?t hate the film, Clooney knew he made a dud and he wanted people to forget it.

Of course this new, extensive, exhaustive ?interview? with George Clooney has the reek of bullsh-t. Of course, that stench could be Elisabetta Canalis. Too much? Eh. Anyway, Clooney allegedly gave this interview to The Sun, and I?m pretty sure some of these quotes are from other interviews Clooney has given in the past few years. Either that of Clooney is just repeating himself endlessly, on a loop. Which isn?t the weirdest thought, honestly. I think Clooney has talking points that he goes to, which means that some of his interviews kind of sound the same. Other stars are like that too. Whatever. I did find some of the stuff interesting, though, and I do think some of it MIGHT be new. The full Sun piece is here, and here are the highlights:
On the circus aspect of celebrity: “It’s much easier for me to hang out with friends at a restaurant in Laglio or a lot of other small villages and towns without 50 photographers showing up in half an hour. My life over there takes me away from the circus aspects of being a celebrity and that’s a pleasant change for me.
On the ease of Italy: ?Unfortunately Laglio is turning into a bit of a tourist mecca now and so I have to be a little more careful whenever I’m there - either that, or I should just stand at the entrance to the village handing out tourist brochures. I don’t really worry about that though. Whenever I want, I can always stage a diversion and invite Brad and Angie and their 15 children to come over. Then I can sneak away to the other side of the lake by boat and do whatever I want.”
On his personal life faltering while he concentrated on his career: “I was working so hard on my film projects that for a time I basically didn’t even think very much about how my personal life was evolving. I didn’t care, in the sense that I didn’t have a family or children to look after and that I wasn’t involved in any long-term relationships.?
On buying a home in Laglio (another name for Lake Como): ?What changed my life in a very pleasant and unexpected way was buying the villa in Laglio. That was a pure investment decision - I thought maybe I would spend a few weeks vacationing there. But then I realised how beautiful life was in Italy and how it really helped calm me and not feel so pressured. I could also work very productively and bring my friends over to keep me company.”
On Darfur: “I’ve been honoured to be able to lend my celebrity to help wherever I can, especially on behalf of the United Nations. But in the case of Darfur it’s been the greatest failure of my life. With other people, we’ve been able to get a lot of attention focused on the terrible situation there and nothing has changed. It’s very frustrating.”
Learning politics from his old man: “My dad believed there’s a right way to live and a right way to run a government. So he has never shied away from speaking his mind on certain issues and being politically outspoken even if that cost him his job or made his life difficult. So I grew up appreciating the meaning of the notion of integrity and I owe that to my father.”
On not wanting to make blockbusters: “There was so much hype around my being Batman and then I nearly killed the franchise and my career along with it. I also didn’t want to do a lot of easy romantic comedies. I wanted to make films like Three Kings and Out Of Sight because those kinds of films are trying to push the envelope and have a chance to leave some kind of mark.”
Keeping work and pleasure separate: “You have to be willing to work hard to create your own sense of freedom and that’s where the real art of living comes in. I probably have as much fun as anyone but I’m extremely disciplined when it comes to dividing my time between work and play. I don’t even drink as much as I used to because I just can’t stand wasting the next day recovering from a hangover any more.”
On luck versus creativity: “I grew up around famous people. In the world I grew up in - Cincinnati, Ohio - my father was a big star as a TV news anchorman and my Aunt Rosemary was one of the most popular singers in America. But I learnt from how her career sank in the Sixties. I saw how little it has to do with you. It’s all about luck. The problem with famous people in general is that they actually think they’re geniuses. You get famous and you think, ‘Yes, of course I should be famous and I’ve earned it all’. You haven’t, though. You got lucky. I got lucky.”
On his future work plans: “I still feel I haven’t done my best work although I’ve at least put myself in the position where I can keep doing what I love and enjoy the process. That, for me, is what it’s all about. I’ve had a pretty good plan which I’ve been following for the last ten years or so in terms of becoming a director, developing my own projects and taking my work to the next level. I even have a bit of a personal life these days. I don’t want to make anyone sick, but things are going pretty well for me.”
[From The Sun]
Is it bullsh-tty or is it authentic? I don?t know. The last parts, about Darfur and about his future in the industry seem new. And I do think he probably said that bit about ?I even have a bit of a personal life these days. I don’t want to make anyone sick, but things are going pretty well for me? sometime in the last week. Because I think Elisabetta is still around, bless her heart. She?s putting in the time and effort, isn?t she? She must be just as kinky as him.
By the way, Rotten Tomatoes has The American at 59%. Not awesome, but not terrible. Roger Ebert liked it (review here), but I started to fall asleep just trying to read what the damn film was about, so my guess is that it?s very dark and slow and you?re supposed to think that it is intense, not boring.
Also: Clooney and Elisabetta were out in West Hollywood last night. I love this photo… Eli always knows where the camera is.

Ah, the Hot Men of The Emmys. Hot Guy Emmys? Hot Guy Awards: The Emmys Edition? Whatever you want to call it, there was a spectacular dearth of truly hot men at the Emmys. Sure, there were cute guys, and many very talented men. But panty-droppers and leg-crossing hotties? There were only a few. So let?s start it off with a classic, Mr. George Clooney. I thought he came across as a bit smug during his award presentation (for the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award), and his bronzing is reaching George Hamiliton proportions. But I still get hot for George sometimes. I mean, he knows how to wear the hell out of a tux, and you know he loves the kinkiest sh-t out there. Also - I can?t find any photos of Elisabetta Canalis anywhere, although most sources have her backstage at the Emmys. Clooney didn?t let her walk the red carpet and wouldn?t answer questions about her - which I think means she?s on the way out. So Clooney will be single soon, maybe.
Aaron Paul is adorable. Beautiful eyes. I would love to see more of him. And he won his first Emmy, bitches!

He?s been a prolific actor over the years, and earlier tonight (August 29) George Clooney received a great honor at the 2010 Primetime Emmy Awards.
Joined backstage by girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis, the ?Ocean?s Eleven? star was presented with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his active involvement in helping out with numerous philanthropic projects.
Clooney rallied Hollywood around special needs like ending genocide in Darfur, Sudan, as well as the ?Help for Haiti? telethon and fundraisers for Hurricane Katrina and 9/11 victims.
Bob Hope?s daughter Linda Hope told press, "Like my father, George is a person who looks beyond himself to use his celebrity ... to make a difference in the world and to inspire others to do the same."
