Earlier this month, Gawker published a really interesting essay called ?Why Is South Sudan a Hellhole? Blame George Clooney?. The point of the essay was not that Clooney is a terrible person or anything, but that the Darfur genocide was a complicated geopolitical catastrophe which was made infinitely worse when Darfur became a cause clbre and South Sudan was partitioned and given ?independence.? The point of the essay was also that West should know by now that whenever we jump into these complicated situations without really understanding the facts on the ground, we make it worse. I?m not going to pretend I completely followed everything in the essay, because pretending I understand would be the same kind of mistake the world made.
Which brings me to Clooney?s latest. George cowrote (with John Prendergast and Akshaya Kumar) a New York Times op-ed about how the situation in Darfur/South Sudan ? you can read it here. Summary: Darfur is still a hellhole. Sudan continues to attack the people of Darfur through literal scorched earth campaigns (burning villages to the ground, etc) and mass rape and torture. The point of the piece is ?don?t forget about Darfur, it?s still terrible.?
While I think it?s noble for Clooney to still be committed to the people of Darfur ? he?s paid for satellites to monitor?s Sudan?s activities for years ? I also wonder if there?s a slightly superficial urge at work here. George is desperate to be taken seriously, of course, which is why he ended up married to Amal. George wants to be a bigger political player. So is it any surprise that the National Enquirer reports this week that George is looking for ways to ?cement? his political credentials? A source claims: ?George has big ambitions and aims to get into politics imminently. He wants to do more humanitarian work and hopes to join the Democrats? 2016 election campaign.? The problem? A lot of people still see George as a boozy womanizer. The source also says, ?Surprisingly, it?s an even money bet on what George likes better ? alcohol or sex.? Yeah? that?s not a problem for a Democrat, you know?

This is one of the stupidest tabloid stories of the week, but the gossip is running dry and we need something fun/silly. This story involves George Clooney, otherwise known as America?s Bachelor-Turned-Husband-of-the-Year, and his runaway bride Amal. Two weekends ago, Amal finally ended her lengthy winter holiday on the west coast and flew out to France, where she appeared at a human rights court. It was big news and the paparazzi were there, of course. Since then, we haven?t heard much about Amal. Sources told Life & Style that Amal went back to London and that she?ll probably be there until March. George is probably going to be LA this month, so it?s a scandal because a married couple is spending five weeks apart!!
According to Life & Style, the newlyweds are on their own and happy about it. George is filming a movie in Los Angeles while Amal is working out of London, and ?the couple actually welcomed the break,? alleges the tabloid. A so-called ?insider? tells the magazine, ?They?re really happy right now being on their own.?
That?s because the Clooneys ?sure weren?t happy together.? The outlet claims they?ve been fighting about whether to start a family, and that George?s close friends are allegedly fed up with Amal?s seriousness and hoping ?the distance is the first step on the road to divorce.?
[From Gossip Cop]
Have we gotten to a ?where there?s smoke, there?s fire? point in this Alamooney gossip yet? For what it?s worth, Gossip Cop also has a ?source close to the situation? who denies this story by saying George and Amal are ?incredibly happy.? Which isn?t a denial that they?re spending five weeks (or more) apart and that they were actually eager to take a break from each other. Because they got married too quickly and possibly for the wrong reasons and they don?t really know each other that well?
Now, all that being said, of course it?s no big deal when a couple spends time apart. I?m side-eyeing it because they?ve literally only been married less than five months and it?s a little bit funny that they ALREADY need a break from each other, but whatever. They?re adults and they both have jobs. I?m sure all of this was covered in the contract.

Conspiracy theory: what if George Clooney just married Amal Alamuddin as some kind of overblown viral marketing for his Casamigos Tequila?! *adjusts tin foil hat*
Anyway, these are the first new photos we?ve had of newly married Clooney back on American soil. He was in NYC yesterday to make a ?surprise appearance? at Comic-Con (Comic-Con is happening in NYC right now?) to promote his film Tomorrowland. Tomorrowland is a Disney film and George plays a ?mysterious failed inventor.? It won?t be out until May 2015. There really was no reason for George to drop in to promote it now, I?m just saying. Unless he was kind of tired of his honeymoon? While at Comic-Con (??), George made jokes.
“It’s not lost on me that I’m spending my honeymoon at Comic-Con,” George Clooney cracked. “My wife was as confused about what Comic-Con was as you are,” he added of his lawyer love Amal Alamuddin.
After declaring it his first Comic-Con, the actor joked about his less-than-celebrated foray into the comic universe as Batman in 1997?S Batman & Robin: Since my Batman I?d been disinvited from Comic-Con for about 15 years ? sorry about the nipples on the suit. I see the comment sections on all you guys.”
[From People & Us Weekly]
Ah, George. The prankster who grew up and got married and it was a fairytale. Sort of. Disney should have worked with George on that whole storyline. Oh, and Disney did release the first teaser trailer for the film ? there?s only a glimpse of George?s character.
As for Mrs. Clooney? do you guys remember how George Clooney ended up giving like twenty interviews about the Elgin Marbles/Parthenon Marbles earlier this year? I tend to believe he made an off-hand comment about stolen antiquities and it got blown up into something else entirely. Well, funny story ? Amal Alamuddin is now going to advise Greece about the Parthenon Marbles in an attempt to get the British Museum to return them to their home.
PS… His wedding ring! I never thought I’d see the day. You changed, bro.

| George Clooney bought Amal a huge English mansion & they?re there now | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

I think The Daily Mail was the first outlet to report this ? apparently, George Clooney has bought a ?multi-million-pound riverside home for his new bride Amal Alamuddin? in England. According to the Mail?s sources, Amal and George are currently staying at this new Oxfordshire mansion and have been there since their Venice wedding ended. O RLY? Don?t get me wrong, I actually believe that George bought a huge English mansion for Amal, but I doubt that they are currently staying there. Still, Us Weekly says it?s true:
Newlyweds George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin have skipped the traditional far-flung honeymoon destination, opting to take their two-week break in England instead! The happy couple, who became husband and wife during a lavish, weekend-long wedding celebration in Venice, Italy on Saturday, Sept. 27, bought their new home in the British county of Berkshire, two months ago. And rather than jet off for some honeymoon luxury, the newly married couple have chosen to hole themselves away in their new English mansion, and spend two weeks together in complete isolation.
“They wanted a simple break,” a source told Us Weekly, “Just somewhere to enjoy time together with no interruptions.”
And their new home proved the perfect option. Set back from the road, in the remote British countryside, their house is said to be luxurious, well decorated and super-private. It’s located close to a train station so lawyer Alamuddin can commute easily into her office for work, which she plans to continue as soon as her honeymoon is over.
“It?s just George and Amal at the house at the moment,” the source continued, adding that even Alamuddin’s family haven’t been to visit. And the duo haven’t yet hired a live-in chef, although they’re not going as far as cooking for themselves.
“A small private catering company delivers their meals every day,” the source said. The couple are expected to return to work, and normal life, next week.
[From Us Weekly]
So maybe it?s true? Maybe they?re in seclusion in the English countryside, just like Duchess Kate and Prince William? The Mail also said that the mansion includes a fancy spa and a home theatre. A source told The Mail: ?It was Amal who first set eyes on the place. It?s her dream location. She was torn between Oxfordshire and Kent but ultimately chose Oxfordshire because she felt most at home there. She first fell in love with it during her days there at university.? George Clooney? English country squire? Or here?s one even better? George Clooney: International Man of the World and Nobel Peace Prize Winner?
He’s won Oscars and nabbed Golden Globes. Heck, he’s even taken home the MTV Movie Award for best breakthrough performance in 1996 for From Dusk Till Dawn. So what accolades are up next for George Clooney? Perhaps a Nobel Peace Prize.
At least that’s what his close friend John Lambros predicted, maybe only half-jokingly, for the actor ? and his barrister bride, Amal Alamuddin ? during a heartfelt speech at the couple’s Sept. 27 wedding ceremony.
Given their common passion for human rights causes, Lambros said, “Okay, I am projecting, but I am also making that call public tonight ? perhaps the first husband-and-wife team to win the [Nobel] Prize for Peace.”
Lambros, who joined three others in delivering speeches during the moving ceremony, also underscored how crucial friendship is to the deeply loyal Clooney. Despite his success and global celebrity, “the friend we have known as George for years has not changed as a friend one bit,” said Lambros, who joked that the actor is so loyal that 20 years “affords me the friend status of rookie. It is more a function of how deeply, how honestly and how genuinely George both cares for and enjoys the people in his life, and how much he values friendship.”
Toward the end of his speech, Lambros turned to Alamuddin and expressed his gratitude.
“To say we, George’s friends, have been waiting for you, Amal, for a while is another enormous understatement,” he said, before quoting from a George Eliot passage. ” ‘And when a man has seen a woman whom he would have chosen if he had intended to marry speedily, his remaining a bachelor will always depend on her resolution rather than his.’ ”
“Amal,” said Lambros, “we all thank you for your resolution.”
[From People]
Sure, it was a ?joke?. Personally, I don?t see how Amal helps Clooney run for governor of California or a Senate seat or anything like that, but I can see how Amal helps boost Clooney?s credibility as a citizen of the world/international man of mystery. I could see George going for some kind of UN appointment (even though he recently resigned his Messenger of Peace role for the UN). But Peace Prize? Nope. That won?t happen.

Lainey at LaineyGossip was right! George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin did not give/sell their first wedding photos to Vogue. Sources told Lainey that George and Amal negotiated some kind of Brangelina-like deal with People Magazine and Hello to publish the official photos. And here we are! People and Hello released their covers early this morning – People chose the photo of George and Amal looking at each other and Hello chose the photo of them looking at the camera for their cover. Brangelina got something like $3-5 million for their wedding photos. I wonder how much George and Amal got? FOR CHARITY! I will donate $5 to their charity if they name it The Alamooney Foundation. Here’s some of People’s write-up:
After George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin exchanged traditional vows, platinum bands and, yes, a lengthy kiss at their 30-minute wedding ceremony on Sept. 27 in Venice, Italy, the newlyweds turned to their family and friends. And the place went wild. Cheers and applause filled the gilded hall at Italy’s historic Aman Canal Grande Venice as around 100 guests, many with tears in their eyes, celebrated the much-anticipated union of the Oscar winner and his barrister bride. The intimate wedding ? including 25 exclusive photos of the emotional ceremony, star-studded parties and all the sweet candid moments ? is featured in this week’s issue of PEOPLE, in conjunction with Hello! magazine internationally.
Marriage, Clooney, 53, tells PEOPLE, “feels pretty damn great.”
“George and Amal radiated love all night,” Alamuddin’s mother Baria tells PEOPLE. “The wedding was so unbelievably special, it was legendary. These three days ? the friends, the families, the atmosphere, everything ? will stay with me all the rest of my life.”
One of four loved ones to deliver heartfelt speeches during the short ceremony, Baria, an editor at the Arabic newspaper Al-Hayat, addressed Clooney at one point. “I said, ‘George, we love you truly, deeply and sincerely. We enjoy your charm, your wit, intelligent conversation and generosity. You are simply perfect.’ ”
His tux wasn’t so bad either. Created by Giorgio Armani as part of his Made to Measure collection, the black tuxedo in ultra-fine wool/cashmere was paired with a white shirt, black bow tie and oxfords in smooth, brushed black leather. (To finish off his look, Clooney wore customized cufflinks, a gift from his bride, with “George” inscribed in Arabic.)
“It is a privilege and a pleasure for me to dress him for this occasion, in which he stars in the most important role: that of the groom,” Armani tells PEOPLE.
“[Giorgio is] the class act of all class acts,” the actor says. “He’s been a good friend for many years and the night wouldn’t be complete without him.”
Of course nothing could upstage the bride, stunning in a custom Oscar de la Renta French lace wedding gown, hand-embroidered with pearls and diamant accents, featuring an off-the-shoulder neckline and a full circular train.
“He’s such an elegant designer and such an elegant man,” Alamuddin, 36, tells PEOPLE.
With three days of parties followed by a civil ceremony, the festivities took center stage in Venice, which the actor calls “the most romantic city in the world” and a natural choice for their wedding locale. “We met in Italy,” says Clooney, who has long owned an estate on Lake Como. “We have a home there. We knew that was where we wanted to get married.”
While the guest list included famous pals like Matt Damon and Bono, the couple kept the celebration intimate and sentimental. They tapped Nora Sagal, the daughter of friends, to sing the Irving Berlin standard Always at the ceremony ? which happened to be the song Clooney’s parents, Nick and Nina, danced to at their wedding ? and Cole Porter’s “Why Shouldn’t I?” for their first dance at the reception.
As Nick Clooney said in his speech during the ceremony, “George and Amal present us with … belief that in this place and at this moment, love is alive and well.”
The bride’s close friend Jae Kim couldn’t agree more. “I had never seen her smile like that,” Kim said sweetly during the ceremony of witnessing her Alamuddin find the love of her life. “She has had that smile now for almost a year straight!”
Besides the afterglow of an unforgettable weekend, did the guests take anything home? “Other than a hangover? Yes,” cracks Clooney, whose favors included iPods loaded with a playlist chosen by the couple. And what’s next for the newlyweds after a brief honeymoon? Quite simply, Clooney tells PEOPLE, “We’re looking forward to everything.”
[From People]
Yes, it’s all pretty over-the-top. Thoughts on Amal’s dress? I don’t hate it. It’s a classic, lovely, traditional wedding gown and it looks very pretty on her. I’m glad she wore her amazing hair gown.
Other random details, from other sources… Page Six says the wedding probably cost about $13 million, which is pretty interesting considering Amal’s parents supposedly paid. I didn?t know Amal came from that kind of wealth. I mean, I figured her family was probably upper-middle-class, more like an academic family rather than a wealthy family. Oh, and sources claim that George and Amal went from Venice to Marrakech for their honeymoon. That?s really cool! I?ve always wanted to go to Marrakech.

Yay! The first married photos of Mr. and Mrs. George Clooney. George and Amal stepped out on Sunday, the day after their Venice wedding. They were leaving the Aman Canal Grande Hotel, which I guess is where they spent their first night together as a married couple. Amal?s gorgeous hair looks a little bit? well, she doesn?t look blow-out perfect, let?s say that. According to People Mag, Amal and George were headed to the Belmond Hotel Cipriani for a post-wedding brunch with guests.
My general vibe: Amal looks really happy. And George looks like his back hurts. So, it was a successful wedding night! I can?t say I love Amal?s married-lady style though. This dress is so short and stiff!! It looks like something Duchess Kate would pick out for herself so she could flash everybody. As for the wedding, there are some assorted details that we can discuss:
*The actual wedding had George and Amal standing on ?a podium in front of a large wall of white candles.?
*The venue was ?decorated with white flowers, including tiny roses, lilies and carnations as well as hundreds of additional hand-crafted flickering candles.? The music: disco and jazz ?from bands like Blondie, Jackson 5, Amy Winehouse, and Daft Punk.?
*Every guest got a ?bag of goodies? which ?included a wedding weekend itinerary, suggestions for what to do, and yes, rules for the big day.? No cell photos allowed. The guests all got an iPod and speaker with George and Amal?s personalized playlist.
*George and Amal arranged for drinks, piano entertainment and food for their guests at the Cipriani for Friday.
*The reception food: ? Guests then feasted on lobster, lemon risotto, and fried polenta with mushrooms.?
*As their guests prepared to leave Venice, ?Clooney and Alamuddin gifted everyone with a framed picture of themselves.? Each guest also received a short note/letter reading: ?We’re both so glad you’re here. You’ve come a long way so we’ll make it worth the trip. Thanks for being here. It means the world to us.”
[From Us Weekly & E! News]
I love the menu! I bet George and Amal had a real cake too (please, let the eat a real cake). I also love that the guests got a photo of George and Amal because that?s just cla$$y.

While we?re waiting on photos of the bride, I just thought you?d like to see this assortment of photos. I?m including a full-length photo of Amal Alamuddin in her black-and-white Dolce & Gabbana gown, arriving in Venice yesterday afternoon. I?m including photos of George Clooney in his black tux, about to head to the wedding venue just a short time ago. And I?m including some photos of George enjoying a low-key brunch with Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford this morning at the Cipriani.
Do you think that Amal and George decided to go with tradition/superstition and they didn?t see each other on their wedding day before the ceremony? Do you think George slept alone last night? I bet George was really, really drunk last night (it was his bachelor party, after all), but I have to say, in the brunch photos? he doesn?t look pained at all. He looks relaxed and healthy. I wouldn?t swear to it, but I think he?s had some fillers. Nothing major or anything, just a few little injections to look ?fresh?.
You can read some of People Magazine?s coverage here. Apparently, George rode in a water taxi to the wedding locale (the Aman, reportedly) with Amal?s parents, Amal?s brother Zak and some of his (George?s relatives).
PS? You know what?s a little bit funny to me? I don?t think any of George?s celebrity friends brought their kids along. No kids allowed at George?s wedding!

Here are some brand new photos of George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin arriving in Venice just a short time ago. HER HAIR!! People, I have great hair (truly!) and Amal’s hair totally makes me jealous. She looks blow-out perfect every single time we see her. Anyway, as you can see… George and Amal want to be seen. They’re totally okay with their wedding being a spectacle. So here we go.
Just take this post as a preview of coming attractions. In all likelihood, George and Amal will be married in Venice tomorrow. This will be George?s second marriage and Amal?s first. Amal?s romantic history is a blank slate as far as gossip goes ? we have no idea who any of her previous boyfriends are or anything like that. All we know about Amal is what George?s press people want us to know. She?s a brilliant and high-powered barrister. She?s George?s ?equal.? She?s politically active.
As for the wedding plans? various outlets are all abuzz. Us Weekly has an exclusive photo of the interior of the Hotel Cipriani, which is the alleged locale of the post-wedding reception party, I guess? Amal arrived in Milan yesterday, and I guess she?s already in Venice. Amal?s family has been in Venice this week, taking care of some of the last-minute details.
Us Weekly says the game plan for the wedding events include: a big rehearsal dinner tonight at the Cipriani, then a lavish breakfast at the Cipriani as well. After breakfast, the wedding party will move to the Aman hotel for the wedding ceremony (they will have to use boats or gondolas), then they will stay at the Aman for the reception. The wedding feast will be a ?five course banquet created by Italian chef Riccardo de Pra, famous for his pairing European and Asian cuisines.? Then the party will return to the Cipriani for ?late-night drinks around the pool, and fireworks. Festivities will continue into Sunday, with another dinner planned at the Cipriani that evening, before the couple finish off their European wedding weekend with a civil ceremony on Monday.?
Amal?s dress is going to be either Sarah Burton for McQueen or Oscar de la Renta. Amal?s sister Tala will be her maid of honor, and we don?t know who Clooney is using as his Best Man. I suspect it?s Rande Gerber. Matt Damon is already there, but he’s the only big celebrity I’ve seen so far. But I?ll be doing coverage of everything tomorrow, IF it goes down (it will go down).

Allegedly, George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin are going to have a very small civil service today in London, which I suppose will be the ?legally binding? wedding ahead of the ?just for fun? wedding in Venice in a few weeks. If you believe the words coming out of George Clooney?s mouth, that is. Star Mag?s conspiracy (which is also a theory I mentioned on Monday) is that George said they would marry in Venice to throw people off the scent of a Como wedding. We?ll see. Speaking of George’s Sunday confessions, when George and Amal attended the Celebrity Fight Night event on Sunday, it was widely reported that he publicly declared his love to Amal from the stage. For the record, his exact words were: ?To my bride-to-be Amal, I love you very much and I can?t wait to be your husband.? NOW WITH

| Amal Alamuddin 'showed off her huge engagement ring' at an 'intimate' dinner | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

I?ve sort of come out on the other side on George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin?s engagement and the flurry of nonsensical reports about how loved-up they are. I used to just feel bewildered and disconcerted by how out of character all of this was. Now I?m just sitting back and enjoying it. It?s crazy and it will get even crazier if and when they finally do get hitched, which is maybe two weekends away. In the meantime, E! News reports that George and Amal had another lovey-dovey outing this week:
The love is definitely in the air for George Clooney and his bride-to-be Amal Alamuddin.
After gushing about his fiance at the Celebrity Fight Night Gala over the weekend, Clooney and his future wife went out for an “intimate” Italian dinner date at Harry’s Bar on Tuesday night.
An eyewitness tells E! News that the couple were “all smiles as they made their way inside the restaurant and looked very much in love” as they cozied up to each other at one point. “Amal showed off her huge engagement ring as the pair shared a romantic moment,” the insider added, noting that they were there for a couple of hours and that George frequents Harry’s often while in Italy.
The pair made their first red carpet appearance over the weekend, and their romantic evening out on the town was overflowing with PDA.
Clooney gushed about his lady while giving a speech at the event, telling the crowd, “I’ve met my bride-to-be in Italy and I will be married in Italy soon, in a couple of weeks. In Venice of all places! In closing, I guess what I would like to say is to my bride-to-be, Amal, that I love you very much and I can’t wait to be your husband.”
A guest told E! News, “She seemed so touched and overwhelmed and at that moment they looked right at each other and it was as if there was no one else in the room.”
[From E! News]
Who is providing these sappy quotes to media outlets? Is it George?s publicist? Or is it the gossip zeitgeist, that George ?has changed? and Amal is The One? And she adores her Sexiest Man Alive, The Forever Bachelor as well? ?it was as if there was no one else in the room.? Barf.
Also ? there are reports that George and Amal?s Venice wedding with just include about 60 people. 60 people plus Anna Wintour and the Vogue photographers, I?m hoping. Us Weekly says that they’ll do the civil ceremony this Friday in London, then on September 27th, they’ll do a bigger (but exclusive) wedding party at Venice’s Hotel Cipriani. So far the guest list does not include Brangelina, Matt Damon or Ben Affleck but does include Cindy Crawford, John Krasinski and Julianna Margulies.
