Emma Watson covers the December issue of Elle UK, which is incidentally the same issue/month with the special Benedict Cumberbatch supplement (Elle UK released more of their Bendy story, which you can read here). This is Emma?s first major interview since she became the face of the United Nations HeForShe campaign, promoting feminism and gender equality. Emma?s UN speech contained nothing particularly groundbreaking, but it still went viral and started a massive dialogue about feminism in celebrity and non-celebrity circles. Emma talked more about her new UN mission and feminism with Elle UK. Some highlights:
Giving the UN speech: “I was very nervous. It wasn?t an easy thing for me to do. It felt like: ‘Am I going to have lunch with these people, or am I going to be eaten? Am I the lunch?’”
On fame: “Fame is not something I have always felt comfortable with; I have really grappled with it emotionally. And, in a funny way, doing this is my way of making sense of the fame, of using it. I have found a way to channel it towards something else, which makes it so much more manageable for me. And this is something I really believe in.?
Believing all people should embrace feminism: “Feminism is not here to dictate to you. It?s not prescriptive, it?s not dogmatic. All we are here to do is give you a choice. If you want to run for President, you can. If you don?t, that?s wonderful, too.” It’s an attitude she learned as a young girl. “I?m lucky I was raised to believe that my opinion at the dinner table was valuable. My mum and I spoke as loudly as my brothers.”

Okay. I don?t see anything wrong with Emma?s words here, nor did I have a problem with her UN speech. I never really understood why any of it was so groundbreaking. Feminism needs to be a big tent with more diversity of opinion, diversity in agendas and diversity in solutions. Now, that being said? I think feminism could be here to dictate to some people. Like, I?d like to see feminists dictate the crap out of equal pay and reproductive choice and quality health care and ending violence against women. DICTATE!! We?re 53% of the voting population. Surely we can dictate some of the agenda?

“Feminism is not here to dictate to you,” Watson said of her fight for gender equality. “It?s not prescriptive, it?s not dogmatic. All we are here to do is give you a choice. If you want to run for president, you can. If you don?t, that?s wonderful, too.”

The first on-set photos of Emma Watson from her new movie, the period piece Colonia, were released online. The images featuring the Harry Potter actress in costume, taken this past Friday in Luxembourg.
Principal photography is about to begin on the thriller that has Emma Watson opposite Bruhl in a tale inspired by true events. They play a young couple who become entangled in the Chilean military coup of 1973. Daniel (Bruhl) is abducted by Pinochet?s secret police and Lena (Watson) tracks him to a sealed-off area in the south of the country called Colonia Dignidad. The Colonia presents itself as a charitable mission run by a lay preacher, but is in fact a place from which no one has ever escaped. In order to find her beloved, Lena decides to join the cult.

Following her impassioned speech at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City on Saturday (September 20), Emma Watson has been on the receiving end of all kinds of encouragement from her famous friends.
The ?Perks of Being a Wallflower? babe introduced her new #HeForShe campaign at the event after she recently "realized that fighting for women's rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop."
"We want to end gender inequality, and to do this, we need everyone involved...We want to try to galvanize as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change and we don't just want to talk about it. We want to try and make sure that it's tangible,? she added.
From there, celebrities took to Twitter to voice their support. Douglas Booth wrote, I am a passionate supporter of gender equality. @EmWatson @HeForShe @UN_Women.
Meanwhile, Joseph Gordon-Levitt weighed in- I consider myself a Feminist & I wanna know what #Feminism means to you. Watch+Contribute,? and James Van Der Beek tweeted, ?Emma Watson really got it right. Gender equality isn't about taking sides, it's about human dignity for all. Now THAT's what I call evolution. Real men support gender equality. ?#?HeForShe.?

Over the weekend, Emma Watson launched the new United Nations program HeForShe. The program is about feminism and bringing men into the fold of equality. Emma gave a powerful speech at the UN and the video of the speech has gone viral:
The crux of Emma?s speech is barely controversial: that every woman should consider herself a feminist, that feminism is about equality, and that men can and should find feminism beneficial. Well, it wasn?t controversial to me. And it wasn?t controversial to most people. But the trolls on 4chan have been ?threatening? Emma ever since.
Members of 4chan?s b board lost their very minds over this, and embarked on a campaign against Emma Watson almost immediately. So far, this has included a threat to release hacked nude pictures of her in the manner that other celebrity photos have been leaked over the past two months?complete with a sad little countdown website titled Emma You Are Next. Although this is almost definitely a hoax, it is an incredibly sick one.
In addition to this, b board members are attempting to get #RIPEmmaWatson trending on Twitter, along with incredibly disturbing fake news website pictures announcing that the actress was found dead in a hotel room. The frightening thing is that, like most of their other campaigns against women, they truly see themselves as just warriors fighting for what?s right. They believe that this is what Emma Watson has coming to her for daring to speak up or identify as a feminist.
This is primarily because they firmly believe that any woman who speaks up on women?s issues is completely disingenuous and only doing it for the purposes of crass, self-serving, self-promotion, and that any man who does is looking to get laid, because they actually cannot possibly imagine a scenario in which someone would genuinely give a sh-t about women.

That Death & Taxes link also includes some foul comments about Emma which? I mean, half the stuff doesn?t even make sense. Maybe my mind has been affected by all of that butter, but I really don?t understand how ?Emma Watson gives a speech about feminism? means that Emma is obviously a fraud because someone hacked into her iPhone and got her photos. How does that logically follow? No, I?m really asking. Death & Taxes associates these trolls with the ?Men?s Rights activists,? so maybe the better hashtag would be #NotAll4ChanTrolls (like #NotAllMen).

Though she?s best known as a wizarding woman, Emma Watson is making quite a name for herself with her humanitarian efforts.
The ?Harry Potter? actress, who became a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador this year, showed up at the UN to kick off her new HeForShe campaign.
Emma declared, "My recent research has shown me that 'feminism' has become an unpopular word. Women are choosing not to identify as feminists ... Why has the word become such an unpopular one?"
"I think it is right I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men."
Watson also shared, "Men, I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue, too. I've seen young men suffering from illness, unable to ask for help for fear it will make them less of a man ... I've seen men fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men don't have the benefits of equality, either. We don't often talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes but I can see that they are."
As she concluded, Emma noted, "In my nervousness for this speech and my moment of doubt, I told myself firmly: If not me, who? If not now, when? ... I invite you to step forward, to be seen and ask yourself: If not me, who? If not now, when?"

Here are some photos of Emma Watson at the United Nations in NYC on Saturday night. Emma was recently appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador of UN Women, formerly UNIFEM. Emma just took her first trip on behalf of UN Women ? she went to Uruguay to highlight women?s participation in political processes, from voter turnout to actually electing women to public office. In NYC, she helped launch a new UN initiative called HeForShe, a program aiming to include more men as ?allies? in gender equality. Today we are launching a campaign HeForShe. I am reaching out to you because we need your help. We must try to mobilize as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change. We don?t just want to talk about it. We want to try and make sure it?s tangible. I was appointed as Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women 6 months ago.
The more I spoke about feminism, the more I realized that fighting for women?s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain is that this has to stop. For the record, feminism by definition is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of political, economic and social equality of the sexes.
When I was 8, I was called bossy because I wanted to direct a play for our parents. At 15, my girlfriends didn?t want to join sports teams because they didn?t want to appear masculine. At 18, my male friends were unable to express their feelings. I decided that I was a feminist. This seemed uncomplicated to me. But my recent research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word. Women are choosing not to identify as feminists. Apparently, [women?s expression is] seen as too strong, too aggressive, anti-men, unattractive.
Why has the word become such an unpopular one? I think it is right I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men. But sadly, I can say that there is no one country in the world where all women can expect to see these rights. No country in the world can yet say that they achieved gender equality. These rights are considered to be human rights but I am one of the lucky ones.
How can we effect change in the world when only half of it is invited to participate in the conversation? Men, I would like to give this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue, too. To date, I?ve seen my father?s role as a parent being valued less by society. I?ve seen young men suffering from illness, unable to ask for help for fear it will make them less of a man. I?ve seen men fragile and insecure by what constitutes male success. Men don?t have the benefits of equality, either.

Emma goes on to say that the conversation about feminism and equality should not simply be a female-driven, female-only conversation and that men need to be invited to participate as well. It?s a very well-written speech and it does a good a job of being mature and serious, but also accessible to the younger girls who are already Emma?s fans. I?m very happy that Emma has taken this goodwill ambassador position and this new initiative sounds great. Good for Emma!
PS… Her coat-dress is Dior. This is the best look I’ve seen from Dior in YEARS.

Stepping out for a meet-up with a friend, Emma Watson showed up at a caf in Central London on Tuesday afternoon (July 29).
The always-stylish ?Perks of Being a Wallflower? babe donned a snazzy white blouse and black trousers as she scurried past a swarm of shutterbugs en route to her destination.
Earlier this month, Emma signed on to work with the United Nations as a Goodwill Ambassador and her first project is with the UN Women?s HeForShe Campaign.
She explained, ?Being asked to serve as UN Women's Goodwill Ambassador is truly humbling. The chance to make a real difference is not an opportunity that everyone is given and is one I have no intention of taking lightly. Women's rights are something so inextricably linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life that I can't imagine an opportunity more exciting. I still have so much to learn, but as I progress I hope to bring more of my individual knowledge, experience, and awareness to this role.?

This story totally got lost in the Independence Day shuffle, but I really wanted to cover it so? sorry that this is like a week old. Before Emma Watson graduated from Brown, she had homes in Rhode Island and England, from what I understand (maybe there?s a NYC apartment in the mix as well?). She?s been spending more time in NYC lately, and I guess she really liked her American housekeeper. Emma liked her so much that Emma brought the housekeeper to London to look after her place there as well. So, basically? Emma brought over an undocumented immigrant to work as a maid for her. And it?s a thing now.
Immigration officials are investigating claims that Emma Watson?s American housekeeper could have worked for her illegally in the UK. Reports suggest that the maid might have worked for the actress at her 2million London home while she held a tourist visa. Tourist visas bar foreign citizens from working in the UK.
The housekeeper, who is thought to have started working for Watson at her New York apartment at the start of 2013, was reportedly stopped by UK immigration staff, who questioned how she intended to fund her stay in Britain. Border Agency officials started the probe after they received a complaint that she was paid to aid the actress at her home in Islington and subsequently travelled to London on and off.
A source at the Home Office told The Independent that they “wouldn’t routinely comment on individual cases”. It is alleged that the housekeeper spent three months in Britain between September 2013 and February 2014. Her employment at Watson?s home is understood to have come to an end at the beginning of February.
Civil penalties of up to 10,000 per worker can be imposed by Home Office chiefs on bosses who are found to have breached immigration guidelines.
The Harry Potter star had been living in the United States as she studied for her degree in English Literature at Brown University in Rhode Island. Have recently obtained the qualification, she is now thought to be based in London.

Is this slightly amusing to anyone else? Don?t get me wrong, I?m sure there are tons of celebrities, wealthy and upper-middle class people in America who employ undocumented workers as maids, gardeners and the like. Emma managed to find an American housekeeper that she liked so much, Emma got her to clean all of her international properties. That must be one awesome maid. So awesome, in fact, that Emma never thought to simply hire an English maid for her English properties? Was Emma being loyal to someone she liked? Or was she being cheap?
Anyway, if Emma does get fined, it won?t be that big of a deal for her (she?s crazy rich already). I think it would be interesting to hear of other celebrities who employed undocumented workers. Maybe this will be the start.
