Emma Watson?s most recent acting job was in Greta Gerwig?s Little Women, which came out in late 2019 (and filmed in early 2019, I believe). Since then, Emma hasn?t scheduled any acting jobs and we can go months without hearing from her or about her. She seems focused on her work on women?s issues, feminism and literature, and I said even back in 2019 that her heart didn?t seem like it was in acting anymore. In February, the Daily Mail?s Talk of the Town gossip column reported that Emma had ?gone dormant? with her acting career and she had basically retired from acting. Then her agent who was quoted in the DM column released a terse statement saying that Emma?s social media is dormant but her career is not. It was a lot! Especially since most people were like ?good for her, it?s wise to take some time off and/or switch careers when you find other passions.? In any case, three months after those ?retirement? stories, Emma has made a statement on her no-longer-dormant Twitter:
Dear Fans,
Rumours about whether I?m engaged or not, or whether my career is ?dormant or not? are ways to create clicks each time they are revealed to be true or untrue.
If I have news I promise I?ll share it with you.
In the mean time please assume no news from me just means I?m quietly spending the pandemic the way most people are failing to make sourdough bread (!), caring for my loved ones and doing my best not to spread a virus that is still affecting so many people.
I am sending so much love to you, hoping you?re ok and as well and happy as you can be in these strange times. And again, thank you to everyone working so hard to keep us safe and well.
E
Xx
[From Emma?s Twitter]
Nothing says ?I?ve checked out and IDGAF? like denying a story three months after the fact! I mean, I think Emma was aware of the ?retirement? story in February and that?s why her agent suddenly denied the story (which he had likely planted in the first place). So why this update? I honestly don?t know. I?m sure there were rumors on social media about an engagement or something, but that happens all the time with everyone. Emma does keep her personal life on lockdown, and I haven?t heard anything recently (then again, I don?t pay attention to Emma?s online fandom). In any case, Emma is fine and she?s still taking the pandemic seriously, as we all should be.

The last time Emma Watson was on-screen was 2019?s Little Women, a film I hated and a film which was poorly cast across the board. Emma barely turned up for any Little Women promotion, which I noted at the time. She did one magazine cover and one premiere, while the rest of the actresses (plus Timothee Chalamet) had to do a big promotional tour for several months. Emma has not signed on to any films after that, and there have been zero ?casting rumors? around her either. So this was an obvious piece of news in the Daily Mail?s Talk of the Town column:
I thought only woodland creatures hibernated for winter, but apparently petite actresses do too. Emma Watson has gone dormant according to her agent. That appears to be movie-speak for shes given up acting.
I can reveal the Harry Potter star, who has been famous since she was nine, has decided to step back from the limelight to spend time with rumoured fiance Leo Robinton, who shes been dating for 18 months. I understand that for several weeks until January, Emma, 30, and Leo ? who reportedly makes a fortune selling legal cannabis in LA ? secretly lived in Ibiza where she would spend mornings reading the papers over smoothies at a vegan cafe.
She is now in LA, where a picture was taken this month, but her publicist confirms her career is dormant and she is not taking on new commitments.
[From The Daily Mail]
I know Emma has a big fanbase and I like her too, as a person but this is not the worst thing in the world. Emma is not a great actress and even in the last few films she made, her heart did not seem into it at all. In recent years, she?s mostly used her fame and platform to talk about feminism, literature and self-education. Which is totally fine! Normalize that normalize actresses stepping away from their acting careers to pursue their real passions! I don?t even believe that Emma stepped away from acting just for a guy I think she?s been looking for a way out for a while, and this just happened to be good timing for her.

Emma Watson hasn?t been working that much as an actress in recent years. She barely promoted Little Women, and whenever she gives any kind of interview these days, she mostly talks about all of the feminist literature she?s been reading. She?s for-real committed to her ?second career? as a feminist activist and she studies what to say and how. I used to think her feminist activism was a bit basic, in that it just seemed ?deep as puddle,? complete with vague sentiments about equality and ?men should be feminists too, it?s in their interest!? But over the years, she?s grown into a something of a self-educated feminist scholar.
Why am I bringing this up? Because I think Emma, through her studies, understands that a lot of white women who identify as feminists have a huge blindspot when it comes to intersectionality. And this week, we?ve seen that Emma has that blind spot too. Emma?s name trended on Twitter for hours on Tuesday because she, like so many white celebrities who said nothing about Black Lives Matter in the days and weeks prior, decided to do the ?Tuesday Blackout? on social media. She posted black boxes (with white trim) on her Instagram with the hashtags #blackouttuesday, #theshowmustbepaused, #amplifymelanatedvoices, #amplifyblackvoices. Um? okay, but was she amplifying black voices?? So, Emma had to make a statement once her Blackout was over.
Still learning. Emma Watson responded after fans criticized her for matching her ?Blackout Tuesday? posts to her Instagram feed?s aesthetic. The Harry Potter actress, 30, faced backlash on Tuesday, June 2, for editing a white box around the black square that was being used to show solidarity for the Black Lives Matter movement on social media. Given Watson?s history of social activism, some fans were disappointed that she would change the universally recognized symbol of support for protestors and that she didn?t use her platform to share important resources for her followers in the wake of George Floyd?s death.
?There is so much racism, both in our past and present, that is not acknowledged nor accounted for,? Watson wrote in her statement on Tuesday night. ?White supremacy is one of the systems of hierarchy and dominance, of exploitation and oppression, that is tightly stitched into society. As a white person, I have benefited from this.?
?Whilst we might feel that, as individuals, we?re working hard internally to actively tackle the structural and institutional racism around us. I?m still learning about the many ways I unconsciously support and uphold a system that is structurally racist. Over the coming days, I?ll be using my bio link and Twitter to share links to resources I?ve found useful for my own researching, learning, listening. I see your anger, sadness and pain. I cannot know what this feels like for you but it doesn?t mean I won?t try to.?
[From Us Weekly]
I liked her statement? Yeah, she shouldn?t have done the Blackout without saying anything about the protests beforehand, and yes, she definitely shouldn?t have put the white border around the black box. But, she knows her own blind spots at least? The bar is low. But I?d rather see an ally make a mistake, own up to it completely and commit to trying to do better. She also used her IG Stories to post information about petitions and racial justice work being done in the UK, plus tips for non-performative allyship.

Emma Watson conducted an interview/conversation with Professor Valerie Hudson, author of Sex and World Peace, a data-driven examination of what happens when governments are male-dominated and toxic, and when women are driven out of any political power. I came into this transcript of their conversation simply hoping to grab a few juicy quotes from Watson, but the entire piece is GREAT. Emma is very well-read and well-versed on every subject they discuss and I really hope a lot of people take the time to read this, because the subject matter is so interesting. Some highlights (just from Emma?s quotes):
The unpaid labor of women: ?The data you collected is heart-stopping. Like the fact that the largest risk for poverty in old age is determined by whether or not one has ever given birth to a child. When you hear that if women?s caring labor were valued even at minimum wage, it would account for 40% of world production, it?s hard to hear that and remain unmoved.?
Silence & microaggression: ?I love that you say silence is the sturdy ally of gendered microaggression. I love the word microaggression. I?ve been doing therapy for years and think it?s the best thing ever, and we talk about telling the microscopic truth.
Figuring out a new language, as a woman, to describe your experience: ?I did an interview with Vogue magazine a couple of months ago, and I talked about how, in the run-up to my 30s, [I felt] this incredible, sudden anxiety and pressure that I had to be married or have a baby or [be] moving into a house. And there was no word for this kind of subliminal messaging and anxiety and pressure that I felt building up but couldn?t really name, so I used the word self-partnered. For me it wasn?t so much about coining a word; it was more that I needed to create a definition for something that I didn?t feel there was language for. And it was interesting because it really riled some people up! It was less for me about the word but more about what it meant ? just this idea that we need to reclaim language and space in order to express ourselves, because sometimes it?s really not there.?
On patriarchal societies: ?So, out of 4,000 mammals and 10 million or more other animal species, only chimps and humans live in patrilineal male-bonded communities. I found that fascinating, the fact that evolutionary theorists believe that patriarchy is not inevitable; I found that oddly hopeful. And there was a documentary Amanda Foreman, a British historian, did a television series called The Ascent of Women, which looked at other societies and cultures that were not organized in a patriarchal way, and there is something really hopeful about realizing [that] ? because I think that?s so much the answer isn?t it? [To] that, Well, there must be a reason why we do things this way, or This is always the way that things have been done, or We?ve clearly discovered the best way to do things, and that is why we continue to do them this way.
Kink culture: ?I feel that relationships that don?t necessarily follow traditional models do require more communication and consent. It requires an actual conversation and agreement about the delegation of tasks and labor and responsibilities that maybe you don?t feel you need to have or should have if you follow those traditional stereotypes.? The idea that relationships are supposed to be easy and it?s all supposed to be implicitly understood, and you?re just meant to get each other, it?s bullsh*t! It?s impossible! A lot of the healthiest relationships I?ve seen have been between same-sex couples because, I think, they have to sit down and agree [on] things. They agree [on] things between them as opposed to [accepting] certain sets of assumptions and expectations that are made. I?ve also kind of become slightly fascinated by kink culture because they are the best communicators ever. They know all about consent.
Feminism & environmentalism: ?My friend said something devastating the other day ? she said, Do you think if we started describing Earth as male, if we gave Earth a male pronoun, do you think that people would treat Earth better? If we give Earth a male pronoun, maybe we?ll stop pillaging and destroying and killing it.
[From Teen Vogue]
As I said, the conversation was fascinating and the back-and-forth was great. I came out of it really impressed by Emma. I really enjoy this aspect of Emma, and I hope she leans into it more, the bookish feminist thinker, the amplifier of women writers and women?s issues. If we started calling it Father Earth? would there really be a change? And would it even be possible to pay women for all of the unpaid labor childcare, caring for senior parents they do? I don?t know.

| Why has Emma Watson been largely M.I.A. during 'Little Women' promotion' | Added 4 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Believe it or not, but I always forget that Emma Watson has, like, diehard stans. True-believer stans who expect her to be front and center of every promotional tour, even when she?s just one part of an ensemble. So it is with Little Women I wasn?t expecting that much from Emma on the promotional trail, and my expectations were basically met. She attended the New York premiere (in an awful dress) and she covered the December issue of British Vogue. That?s it. She hasn?t gone to any of the other premieres or screenings. I think she maybe did one day of junket-ing. She plays Meg in Little Women, and Meg really isn?t the go-to character, you know? People have stronger feelings about Jo, Beth and even Amy. They have strong feelings about Laurie too. But Meg? Nah. So maybe Emma was aware of that and she decided to leave the promotional heavy lifting to Saoirse Ronan, Timothee Chalamet and Greta Gerwig (good luck getting Greta out of the spotlight for the promotion). And now Page Six is turning it into a thing:
Emma Watson refused to join the promo tour for ?Little Women,? Page Six can reveal. Watson?s been MIA, and we?ve been told that her reps informed Sony Pictures she would join co-stars Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Timothe Chalamet and her royal highness Meryl Streep only at the premiere at MoMA on Dec. 7.
While the rest of the cast has been hitting the promo circuit hard, with late-night appearances, morning-show spots and touring the globe, a movie source revealed: ?Emma?s reps told Sony that she would only do the premiere. We don?t really know what happened, if she wasn?t happy with the movie or fell out with the cast.?
However, a source insisted that Watson was thrilled with the film, pointing out that she had flooded her Instagram account ? she has 52.9 million followers, more than anyone else in the cast ? with photos of the movie, and said she?s also not a lead character. (She plays Meg ? 1 of the 4 little women.) Having such a massive social-media footprint means that she could easily skip the tour and have equal impact, the insider pointed out.
[From Page Six]
Given what (little) I know of Watson, I don?t think that she would just skip out on promotion because she wasn?t happy with the film? That doesn?t seem like her at all. It?s far more likely that it?s what I said she?s Meg, and there aren?t many Meg stans. And instead of trying to pull focus from Saoirse and Timmy, Emma just decided to sit it out. Why go all out when you?re just part of the ensemble? Why prepare a million outfits for the promotion when? you don?t have to? When you can just tell the studio ?nah, I don?t feel like it.?
Maybe another option is ?Laura Dern is Emma?s nemesis as well.? I hope so! More people need to get on the ?Laura Dern is THE WORST? bandwagon. Come on, there?s room!

A few weeks ago, Emma Watson, starring in the upcoming Little Women, said in a Vogue interview that she was ?self-partnered,? and the internet reacted. Emma recently said that she?s glad her comment resonated positively with so many folks, and that she hadn?t given it much thought to the remark when she said it:
Much to her surprise, this new term she coined sparked a conversation about what it means to be a single person in the modern age. She told The Rundown at the Little Women premiere, I literally said it as a throwaway comment thinking it would go no further. And then I woke up the next morning and my phones blowing up and I dont know why and its all my friends messaging me being like, self-partnered? This things gone crazy.
Nonetheless, shes glad her stressful moment is inspiring singles across the world. Im so happy people feel empowered, she shared.
But one doesnt have to be single to be self-partnered. Emma said that shes 100 percent committed to being self-partnered even when shes in a relationship. The 29-year-old explained, Its much more about your relationship with yourself and the feeling of not somehow deficient in some way cause youre not with someone.
[From E!]
I wondered whether Emma was going to get a lot of flak about this, so I?m glad that she?s heard from people who felt empowered by what she said, and had a new term to describe themselves (if they choose). I also really like that Emma stresses that she?s specifically referring to the relationship that she has with herself, regardless of whether she?s in a relationship with someone else: It?s not a word meant to describe just being single. I know so many people who have partners who devote so much of their time and energy to those people and sort of forget themselves in the process. Emmas comments are a great reminder that its important to pay attention to yourself regardless of whether you have a partner.

As Kaiser covered earlier, several celebrities donated to the UK Justice and Equality Fund after the “Dear Sisters” open letter was published in the Guardian this weekend. The letter, signed by over 200 female UK actors, demands an end to sexual harassment in all workplaces. One of the first, and largest, contributions was made by Emma Watson who donated one million pounds (about $1.4 million) to the cause.
Harry Potter pal Emma Watson just donated $1.4 million to a British fund established to battle sexual harassment and support its victims.
The announcement about Watson’s donation, along with contributions from several other celebrities, to the UK Justice and Equality Fund followed the publication of a “Dear Sisters” open letter in The Guardian on Saturday. The letter was signed by some 200 women in the British entertainment industry and called on people everywhere to stand in solidarity with Hollywood’s Times Up initiative to fight sexual harassment and inequality.
“It’s easy to dismiss harassment and abuse as being caused by ‘one or two … bad men,’ but the UK statistics point to a much bigger and more structural problem. The issue is systemic,” Watson told The Guardian.
[From Huffington Post]
Emma is currently working and was not able to attend the BAFTAs, which was hard for her because she wanted to support the Time’s Up movement in person. Earlier this year, she showed her support at the Golden Globes, to which she brought Marai Larasi, the executive director of Imkaan as her date. Since she couldn’t be at the BAFTA’s, she recorded this video for Twitter and called for awareness and donations:
We are bringing it home to the UK! @timesupnow

Just like last year, this year?s pre-Golden Globes BAFTA tea party event was really well-attended. BAFTA LA puts together several events during the American awards season, and their tea party event – usually held in the late afternoon, so people can still go to parties later – has become one of the biggest events of the Golden Globes weekend. People don?t have to wear, like, full-on gowns and sh-t. Loads of British actors attend, but other people come out too. It seems like a lovely event.
Emma Watson is trying to debut a new look during Golden Globes weekend – she?s been growing out her hair for a few years, to mixed results (in my opinion), but she had been looking pretty good. But then she decided to get those f–king baby-bangs. The BAFTA tea party was the red carpet debut for her new bangs and I HATE THEM SO MUCH. (I actually kind of like her Osman suit though.)
Even though I?m sort of over Jessica Chastain right now, I absolutely love this Ralph Lauren dress on her. It?s really cute and unexpected, right? She rarely looks this cute and fashion-forward.
Maybe someday, we can all grow up to be as cool as Isabelle Huppert. God, I love everything about her!! This suit is Gucci. The color and cut are divine, just like the woman.
Diane Kruger in Chanel. This is almost too cute and too simple to be from Chanel.
Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton. Ugh. I?m really over this look from her – the too-short, too-blonde hair, the childlike style. I?ll say something nice: at least she doesn?t look a Civil War ghost.
Emilia Clarke in Michael Kors – it?s like she really dressed for a tea party, right? It?s very? ladies-who-lunch.
Mary J. Blige in Elizabeth Kennedy. I love Mary and I want her to do well this awards season and beyond. But I really haven?t liked anything she?s worn so far.

| Emma Watson and her boyfriend split earlier this year and she kept it quiet | Added 6 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

To be perfectly honest, I had entirely forgotten about Emma Watson and William ?Mack? Knight?s relationship. Remember when they first ?went public? after scoring tickets to Hamilton when no one else could, reminding me, once again, that I should have ticked the ?be a celebrity? box on my aptitude tests? So when I saw their photo on Twitter and suddenly remembered they were together, I thought, ?Oh, I wonder how they?re doing?? Guess that was the wrong question because it turns out, they?re dunzo. Not only are they broken up, they might have been broken up since May but we don?t know because Emma doesn?t discuss her relationships.
Emma Watson and boyfriend William ?Mack? Knight have split after dating for nearly two years, Us Weekly can exclusively confirm.
A source confirms to Us that the pair went their separate ways earlier this year and were last seen together on May 25. When asked, her rep told Us, ?I?m afraid I don?t comment on my client?s personal life.?
In February this year she told Vanity Fair that she no longer takes photos with fans, in order to avoid giving out ?tracking data? of where she is and what she?s wearing, and explained that keeping her private life under wraps is part of the way she deals with her worldwide fame.
?I want to be consistent: I can?t talk about my boyfriend in an interview and then expect people not to take paparazzi pictures of me walking around outside my home. You can?t have it both ways,? she said. ?I?ve noticed, in Hollywood, who you?re dating gets tied up into your film promotion and becomes part of the performance and the circus. I would hate anyone that I were with to feel like they were in any way part of a show or an act.?
[From Us]
Obviously I wasn?t too invested because I?d completely forgotten but now that I’m reminded of them, I?m a little bummed. I thought they were well matched. Plus, they seemed a little starry-eyed about each other, which is sweet. At least I think they did, that?s what the ?sources? said and since the couple themselves refused to speak on the subject, that?s all I have to go on.
Emma is still on her year sabbatical from acting so there is nothing new on her IMDb page. However, rumors are still swirling about a possible Beauty and the Beast 2. Nobody asked for my thoughts but – No! I get it, the movie made a heapload of money blah blah blah but seriously, how would that look? Would Cogsworth accidently give the wrong time to another witch and the castle gets transformed again? Only this time everyone is pissed off at Cogsworth instead of scared of the Beast, which wouldn?t work because everyone is always pissed off at Cogsworth anyway. But nobody?s asking me. Emma, however, said she?s, ?always thought that Belle would become a teacher and she would run the library in the castle, and open it up to the village.? Oh, well that sounds thrilling. B&B 2 is about school with a beautiful and caring teacher who sees the beauty in everyone. A lovely wish for reality but for the plot of a movie? Where?s the drama? Where?s the panic? Where?s the freakishly hot furry beast ? sorry, that last bit kind of slipped out.
Oh well, maybe Emma doesn?t need another hit franchise, she?s famous enough. So famous, in fact, that a sheep in Cambridge can recognize her face from other celebrities. You know you?ve made it when?
