Emma Watson is really trying to appeal to directors and casting agents these days. Granted, she may really feel this way, but in interview after interview, she?s going out of her way to prove that she?s capable of more than just poorly written teen roles and the odd supporting part in dramas. She?s also slapping away this idea that she enjoys the whole red carpet/magazine photoshoot thing ? Emma tells The Guardian that the fashion industry projects a ?dangerously unhealthy? image for young girls and women:
Emma Watson has criticised the “dangerously unhealthy” image projected by the fashion industry and said the pressure to look perfect has taken its toll on her. The actor has also described her doomed attempts to merge into the background as a student at an American university, where she found herself being trailed everywhere by British photographers.
After the recent New York premiere of Noah, she tweeted a photograph of the array of cosmetics ? and a guardian angel pin ? that she said were essential aids to her flawless appearance, and another of herself in a backless dress captioned: “I did NOT wake up like this.”
The actress said she is better at taking criticism these days than she once was. “As a younger woman, that pressure got me down, but I’ve made my peace with it. With airbrushing and digital manipulation, fashion can project an unobtainable image that’s dangerously unhealthy. I’m excited about the ageing process. I’m more interested in women who aren’t perfect. They’re more compelling.”
Watson became famous playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies and has been constantly in work since. She is about to start filming a thriller, Regression, by Alejandro Amenbar and is also trying to complete her degree at Brown University, Rhode Island. She enrolled in 2009 for what would have been a four year course, but has taken several breaks for film work, and spent a year studying at Oxford.
“After Harry Potter, all that mattered was university,” she said, in an interview with the Sunday Times. “It wasn’t always easy to break down barriers, as having men from the British press following me with cameras didn’t help my mission to integrate.”
The American press, by contrast, “afforded me so much privacy”, but her fellow students recognised her at once. “On the first day, I walked into the canteen and everyone went completely silent and turned around to look at me. I had to say to myself ‘it’s OK, you can do this’. You just have to take a deep breath and gather your courage.”

I have a love-hate relationship with these kinds of quotes from anyone who has actively participated in and profited from the industry which they are now bad-mouthing. On one side, I like that someone so young is thinking about the long-term effects of this sort of Photoshop Culture. On the other hand… Emma has appeared in every magazine under the sun, even guest-editing some publications. She?s also had beauty contracts (for Lancome) and fashion contracts (Burberry). I don?t know ? it just strikes me as wanting her cake and eating it too. She?ll take the $$$ but she?ll complain about how those companies perpetuate unhealthy stereotypes. Then again? I do prefer Emma to some of the other 23-year-olds who act like they know everything about everything.

Did you know Paramount spent $125 million on Noah? And that?s just the production ? I would imagine the PR campaign is around $30-40 million as well. And I was sure that Noah was going to bomb like a Biblical Waterworld, but it ?won? the weekend box office (North American) with about $41 million in sales. Plus, they?re hustling this movie big-time overseas too. Which brings me to these photos ? these are pics from the big London premiere last night.
Emma Watson wore this Ralph Lauren gown for the premiere. Sigh? I like it. I know some of you are going to say it?s bridal, and maybe it is? but I really like it. I like it so much more than the oversized DRAMA gown she wore to the NYC premiere last week. The cut is beautiful on her figure, I love her hair (so much better here than in NYC as well) and I actually think the side-slit is what saves this gown from looking too bridal. Plus, her jewelry helps too. PS? is the guy in the grey suit her boyfriend?
I?m also including photos of Jennifer Connelly in a very odd Alexander McQueen gown. I understand the desire to wear McQueen in England, but this just looks too goth/wintery for this premiere. I tend to think J-Con is pretty overrated as a Fashion Girl though. She rarely pulls off the looks she?s attempting. I?m also including a photo of Russell Crowe and his date (???) Hugh Jackman. Remember, they did Les Mis together. I guess they?re BFFs now.

Here is Emma Watson becoming the belle of the ball at the premiere of “Noah” in New York City. She looked delectable in an Oscar de la Renta dark backless long dress that she paired with Christian Louboutin shoes and a Roger Vivier bag.
The British movie starlet was joined on the red carpet at the Ziegfeld Theater by co-stars Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly who play Noah and his wife respectively. Crowe suited up with no tie, while Connelly dressed head to toe in Louis Vuitton.

Here are some photos from last night?s NYC premiere of Noah, starring Emma Watson, Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly. Is this the first time the three leads have been together for the promotional push? I think so. Anyway, Emma went a little bit overboard with her premiere look, so let?s talk about her first. Emma wore this dramatic Oscar de la Renta gown in black duchess satin. This is a beautiful gown. I would have put it on Helen Mirren for a major awards show, not an early-20s starlet for a premiere. The dress is better from behind, with that gorgeous train and the deep V-back. I kind of think Emma?s styling is off here ? her hair is too messy, her ?bold lip? color too orange. If you are going to do a sophisticated, mature look like this, commit to it. Do a real hairstyle and go with a dark red lip.
Also: Ian Somerhalder came to the premiere (for no reason). Am I the only thinking, ?Huh, maybe Ian should get with Emma?? She has a boyfriend, I guess, but for some reason, I think Ian and Emma would be sort of awesome together.
Jennifer Connelly wore Louis Vuitton ? I?m not wild about this look. At all. I don?t really hate it, I?m just what-if-ing it. What if Jennifer had done full-on leather? What if she hadn?t worn those fug booties? What if the leather bodice had fit correctly? Also: Jennifer came with her husband Paul Bettany, who is a Forever Dong (for me). I love him so much.
And Russell Crowe was there, of course. Russell looks pretty good here? I never mind when he?s got some chub though.

Here are some photos of Emma Watson outside of the Ed Sullivan Theater last night, on her way to appear on David Letterman?s show to promote Noah. I?ve been saying that Noah looks like a major bomb for a while now, but a new fear is growing inside me? what if people actually go to see it? What will it mean if Noah is a hit?! Will we see more bloated, Biblical epics with CGI God-wrath? Lord, I hope not. As for Emma? she looks great in these photos. I really like that she?s been doing so many androgynous/menswear-inspired looks lately. She looks sophisticated and beautiful.
Emma recently sat down with The Telegraph to talk about the film, and she was asked about her own religious beliefs. She gave the only kind of answer I would expect from a young person promoting a Biblical epic:
“I already, before I did the movie, had a sense that I was someone that was more spiritual, than specifically religious. I had a sense that I believed in a higher power, but that I was more of a Universalist, I see that there are these unifying tenets between so many religions.”

Well? she was trying to strike some kind of middle ground and encourage all people of all faiths to give the film a shot. But I think talking about religious universalism alienates Evangelical Christians, many of whom are being courted by the studio. Plus, universalism alienates Muslims, but most Islam-centric countries have already banned the movie.
Emma also spoke about getting typecast as ?good girls? and not bombshells with Elle Mag. She said:
?In my downtime, I don?t sex myself up much. Sometimes I have a hard time convincing directors that I can play more adult roles. I was being offered roles that I didn?t feel were very complicated. Women that were one dimensional. Roles that required me to be one thing, but real women never are.?

I think she?s probably correct that refusing to ?sex up? her image has hurt her with directors and casting agents. But! It does feel like there?s a sliver of Jessica Biel-ism here too. Biel thinks that casting directors can never see past her extreme beauty to hire her for the really good roles, which? is an adorable theory. Emma thinks that casting directors can?t see past her wholesome Disney image to cast her as interesting, challenging characters. Which, as I said, is the case sometimes. But why would a director hire Emma when they could hire? Jennifer Lawrence or Kristen Stewart?

The gorgeous actress wore her see-through metallic Vera Wang Collection dress to the Academy Awards… and actually flashed her thong at one point.
The Harry Potter star plays Noah’s adopted daughter in the biblical epic and we can’t wait to see her on our screens once again.
