Mischa Barton talked to Time Out New York about her recent breakdown and involuntary psychiatric hold, better known as a 5150. She named a multitude of events that compounded to give her a nervous breakdown, but mainly, she blamed the removal of her four wisdom teeth.

Here?s what happened: Before the show started, I was traveling abroad for contract stuff and I went through a terrible surgery?a wisdom tooth surgery, all four removed. It was a nightmare. I?ve never had surgery before?it all went wrong and I had to have a second surgery and it almost delayed shooting because it was a nightmare to me, because I couldn?t deal with the thought of not getting there on time. So with the travel, and surgery and prep for the show?it was hell.
Is this when you were checked into Cedars?
Yeah, I went through a tough spot where everything compounded on me, and it was like a perfect storm, like everything was happening to me at once. The show, travel and then this fairly routine surgery that went wrong?it?s still just healing. But I had to get through it without proper painkillers because I couldn?t take those during work. So it?s been a nightmare.
I know people who had four wisdom teeth pulled out without anesthesia or painkillers afterward because it was too expensive. They didn’t suffer a nervous breakdown and have to be forced into an institution. They even went to work in a day or two. Even if Mischa couldn’t take Vicodin, she could have taken Aspirin or one of those Tylenol Vicodins or do what I do when I find myself in a lot of pain. Imagine a threesome with Rosie O’Donnell and Star Jones. Much like having someone punch you in the arm when you stub your toe, a new pain takes your mind off the other.

Mischa Barton has spoken for the first time about her psychiatric hospitalization earlier this summer. She’s a smart woman, and her explanation sounds like she’s trying to be purposefully vague and not admit much. Mischa says that it all happened due to the intense pain she was in after having four wisdom teeth removed at once. She suffered terrible migraines and was under a lot of pressure from work. Barton doesn’t admit that she was on any painkillers, just that she couldn’t take them when she was working and that she suffering a lot a pain. She also says it wasn’t a breakdown exactly but won’t say if she was hospitalized due to drugs:

How did you end up in a psychiatric hospital?
I was down in the dumps about everything there for a while. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom about things and have to get the most stressed-out just to feel better again. I got completely stressed-out and couldn?t handle everything, and now I feel really in control.
Was it an official nervous breakdown? Drugs?
I don?t know. I don?t know. I had a friend who had a quasi?nervous breakdown, but I?m not sure it?s the same thing. I?m not sure I?m capable of a full-on nervous breakdown, but it was pretty bad. It didn?t last that long. It was more about the pain. I have a newfound respect for people who have chronic pain. I started getting migraines.
How long were you in Cedars?
They don?t keep you in the hospital. I wasn?t there very long.

I’ve only had a couple wisdom teeth removed at once and it wasn’t that bad. I understand that if the teeth are compacted it can be incredibly painful, though. It probably was as awful as she’s saying, but the cause of her incident was most likely the drugs she was on, prescription or not, coupled with the pain. She’s not revealing much here, and I guess I don’t blame her. The press has moved on, and Mischa didn’t get much mileage out of this. As cynical as it sounds, you can understand why she’s talking about her hospitalization again now. Maybe if she was a little more open about it she would be getting more coverage.
The National Enquirer reports this week that Mischa loves to sing and play guitar and that she’s planning some sort of folk music CD. They write that “the 23-year-old actress has thrown herself into songwriting and hopes to release a CD of original folk-rock songs next year.” We’ll see if Mischa has any talent, but even if she doesn’t she’s sure to get some opportunities in the music industry given her name recognition.

The actress says her problems began after 'terrible' oral surgery.

Little more than a month after returning to the Manhattan set of her new TV show, "The Beautiful Life," following her much-publicized hospitalization in mid-July, Mischa Barton has spoken out for the first time about the incident.
"I went through a tough spot where everything compounded on me, and it was like a perfect storm, like everything was happening to me at once," she told Time Out New York. The former "O.C." star was removed from her home last month, due to what the Los Angeles Police Department characterized as "medical issues."
"Ms. Barton was safely transferred to medical treatment for which she remains hospitalized, as per the recommendation of her doctor," her rep told MTV News in a statement last month, amid rumors of an involuntary psychiatric hold at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Barton told Time Out that her troubles started before she was scheduled to begin filming the series. She was traveling abroad and had a "terrible" wisdom-tooth removal from which she's still just recovering. "I had to get through it without proper painkillers because I couldn't take those during work," she said of the procedure. "So it's been a nightmare."
Preparing for her television return while suffering physical pain was too much for Barton. "I was down in the dumps about everything there for a while," she said. "Sometimes, you have to hit rock bottom about things and have to get the most stressed out just to feel better again. I got completely stressed out and couldn't handle everything, and now I feel really in control."
Barton said she did not experience a nervous breakdown, but admitted that her ordeal "was pretty bad." She claimed the media made a mountain out of a molehill with their inaccurate reports. "The funny thing is, if all this happened in New York, no one would care," she said. "New York lets you be who you are, and people aren't as judgmental. I'm so glad to be back here."
At the time of her hospitalization, a friend told People.com that Barton had been "dealing with a lot of personal issues" and suggested that she picked up "some of the bad habits that had gotten out of control a couple years back."

She’s always up for a fun evening out, and last night (August 20) Mischa Barton was spotted at the I “Heart” Ronson soiree in New York City.
The “Oh in Ohio” actress looked to be enjoying herself as she meandered around The Lighthosue at Chelsea Piers in a floral print dress with black and Pink heels.
As for the rumors that she was being kicked off of her new gig on “The Beautiful Life,” Barton’s spokesperson says it’s all rubbish.
Addressing why her client wasn’t in the initial promo photo for the show, the rep said, “She didn’t participate in that shoot. It didn’t work out timing-wise for her. (The photo shoot took place) a while ago when she was in London.”
A CW source corroborated the story, saying, “This is just one element of the network’s marketing campaign and not every cast member is in each piece of creative.”

Continuing about with life in the Big Apple, Mischa Barton was spotted out hailing a cab in New York City on Wednesday afternoon (August 19).
The former “OC” star puffed away on a cigarette as she waited for her transport, enjoying a little time away from the set of her new CW show, “The Beautiful Life”.

Taking some time off of her filming schedule, Mischa Barton was spotted walking her dog with friends in New York City yesterday afternoon (August 17).
The “O.C.” cutie was sporting the au natural look on her stroll, going sans makeup and forgetting to wear a bra, much to the delight of the paparazzi.
Miss Barton recently narrowly escaped a full-fledged fall out of her trailer on the set of her new gig “The Beautiful Life” while talking to press.
As she tried to casually step down the stairs, one of her heels apparently slipped out from under her, but she luckily caught herself, avoiding any injury.

The one benefit of being Mischa Barton and wearing no bra under a see-through shirt is that people no longer question your judgment. They just chalk it up to you being bat-shit crazy. It’s like when the mentally handicapped dress themselves. You don’t make fun of their leather jacket with sweats outfit because you’re just glad they decided to put on pants today. Similarly, you’re just happy Mischa isn’t taking a dump in the street.

Looking at these pictures of Mischa Barton on the set of The Beautiful Life you wouldn’t know she went crazy, possibly tried to kill herself and was institutionalized for a while. The glow on her face really throws us off.
No wonder they hired Mischa to play a model. When I look at her, I can’t tell whether she’s just an actor playing a model or a real model or whether she woke up hung-over in a dumpster somewhere. It’s really hard to tell with such a beautiful and talented actress.

When I saw these pictures of Mischa Barton arriving to the set of “The Beautiful Life,” my heart instantly leapt into my throat and choked me up. Ha ha, I’m kidding. It was actually vomit, not my heart. But they still feel a lot alike this early in the morning!

Doing her best to get her career back in order, Mischa Barton has been busily working away on her new CW show “The Beautiful Life”.
And when she’s not busy shooting scenes on the New York City set, sources tell that the former “OC” star has spending time getting into shape with a personal trainer at Equinox gym.
“Mischa is really focused on getting into shape,” a source told People magazine. “Mischa has been doing a lot of conditioning with weights as well as cardio on the treadmill, and some kickboxing.”
The insider adds, “She’s been very consistent and she seems focused. She has big self-esteem issues. She hates her legs. She isn’t comfortable with her body. It’s been a big source of stress and self-hate.”
