There?s not really anything wrong with Elle UK?s February cover, but it still annoys me. Sure, Natalie Portman looks gorgeous, per usual. I can?t think of any time where I haven?t stopped dead in my tracks and thought ?there?s no possible way to take a bad picture of her.? So, that?s fine. I guess it?s the outfit that annoys me. She?s pantless and wearing a puffy shirt or wrap or something. It?s not cute. The Jezebel girls called this cover ?Natalie Portman?s Elle UK Cover Ushers In a New Decade of Sexyface? and they point out that ?While nobody knows what this decade may bring, fashion-wise, I think it’s safe to say that the February 2010 cover of Elle UK proves that two trends of the 00s?sexyface and no-pants?haven’t died just yet.? Maybe I would like the cover better if her mouth was closed. It would be an improvement, right?
Anyhoodle, the interview from Elle UK hasn?t been released yet. I?m assuming Natalie is promoting Brothers in the interview, and I?m also assuming Natalie will continue to whine about Hollywood being a bully, and how eating meat is equivalent to rape, or talking about how she signed the Roman Polanski petition. Meh.
While I was looking for the interview online, I did find one very interesting rumor that swirling around. Apparently Natalie, Kristen Stewart and Ellen Page are all vying to play the lead (opposite George Clooney) in the American remake of the Swedish film (based on the Stieg Larsson Millennium book trilogy) The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. If you?d like to know more about the author or the trilogy, Newsweek had a really excellent piece that works as an introduction to the series. Apparently, the role Portman, Page and Stewart are vying for is Lisbeth Salander, a young, brilliant computer hacker. Clooney would be playing the cop investigating the Swedish criminal underbelly.
Now here’s a role that Kristen Stewart can really sink her teeth into. Or at least bite her lip over.
The New Moon beauty is rumored to be up for he part of hacker Lisbeth Salander in an upcoming adaptation of the Swedish film trilogy Millennium. What’s more, the top contender for the male lead in the movie is none other than George Clooney. How interesting would it to be to see those two act opposite each other?
In the original Millennium trilogy?which was adapted from Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s books?the role of Salander, a highly intelligent but antisocial and violence-prone computer hacker, was portrayed by Noomi Rapace. Sony Pictures is currently negotiating to adapt the film series.
K-Stew could have some heavy competition for the part, however; Natalie Portman and Ellen Page have both expressed interest in the role. Do you think Stewart would be a good fit for the role?

Kristen looks the most like the Swedish actress Noomi Rapace, but if Oscar nominees Ellen Page and Natalie Portman are vying for the role, I think Kristen might lose out. Bless her lip-biting heart. I?m actually going with Ellen Page on this one - I think she?s got the acting chops to do the role.

OK! Magazine UK has a weird interview with Natalie Portman where she?s talking a lot about her family. Natalie rarely talks about her family and OK only identifies the interview they?re pulling quotes from as ?a German magazine?. Which sounds fishy to me, but whatever - other sites are picking them up, so maybe they?re from a press conference Brothers. Anyway, Natalie talks about how grateful she is for being an only child, and how it meant her parents could focus only on her and her career as a child actor. She also says, in regards to Hollywood, ?One day you are celebrated, the next day they just bully you. That?s quite exhausting for the psyche!” Um, what?
Natalie Portman says her family and friends keep her grounded in the mad world of Hollywood.
Brothers actress Natalie Portman has revealed she couldn’t have become a Hollywood actress if she hadn’t had the support of her family.
The notoriously private star - who landed her first major screen role in thriller Leon aged 13 - said it helped being an only child as her parents could devote their time to taking her to auditions.
The 28-year-old revealed: “I had the sole attention of my parents. And you know what? If I had had brothers or sisters I would have never become an actress.
“My mother has accompanied me to every audition and every acting class. With more children that would have never been possible. They would have been jealous of me.?
Natalie insists the unwavering support of her mother Shelley and father Avner meant she wouldn?t go off the rails when she achieved Hollywood success.
She added to a German magazine: “Family and friends have always been there for me - this is very important because in Hollywood it goes up and down.
“One day you are celebrated, the next day they just bully you. That?s quite exhausting for the psyche!”
Natalie also believes her time at Harvard College has helped her become a better actress.
The ?Brothers? star ? who studied at the prestigious university while she was shooting the ?Star Wars? prequels - said: “It simply was the best acting school!
“I learned to observe people, assess situations ? since I?ve been there I can do it a lot better. You learn excellent skills to put yourself in a film character.?

Don?t get me wrong, I understand how Hollywood chews up and spits out young women (and men) every day, but it?s weird for Natalie to act like she?s been a victim of it too, right? I mean, she?s always been a golden girl in Hollywood, ever since her role in The Professional (which is identified as Leon in the article). She went from critical acclaim to box office success to blockbusters to awards. Just when has she been bullied? When she compared eating meat to rape? Or maybe when she signed the Free Polanski petition?

Enduring another chilly day in Manhattan, Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis were spotted on the set of “Black Swan” this morning (December 10).
The “V for Vendetta” actress and the “The 70s Show” babe both looked cold as they meandered around in between takes, trying to keep themselves warm.
In a recent interview, Natalie told press that she took the “Black Swan” gig in an effort to explore a more adult acting genre.
“I’m trying to find roles that demand more adulthood from me because you can get stuck in a very awful cute cycle as a woman in film, especially being such a small person. I’m a really late bloomer. In my own life, it’s only been the last couple of years where I’m like, I’m an adult.”

Now that she’s finished up promoting her recently released movie “Brothers,” Natalie Portman has moved on to yet another new project called “Black Swan”.
The “Star Wars” actress was spotted at the Lincoln Center in Manhattan on Monday morning (December 7), getting to work alongside co-star Vincent Cassel and director Darren Aronofsky.
“Black Swan” also stars “That 70’s Show” sweetheart Mila Kunis, as well as “Girl, Interrupted” actress Winona Ryder.
Due out sometime next year, the movie is described as “a thriller that hones in on the relationship between a veteran ballet dancer and a rival.”

Tobey Maguire has a new interview in Parade, and he just seems like such a serious, grown up guy. He touches on a lot of issues that parents are familiar with, like balancing home and family life, trying to prioritize your time, and just being present for your children. The part that made me laugh is where he admits that he often gets mistaken for other actors, like Jake Gyllenhaal and Elijah Wood, and that he’ll just say “thank you” and sign the other person’s name. Maguire also mused about the responsibilities that come with fame and the fact that he doesn’t want to be a celebrity. Maybe that’s why he’s often mistaken for other actors - he’s been in some blockbusters but he’s in no way overexposed or even covered much in the celebrity press.
Re-editing his own life.
“It’s just all a time issue. Recently, I’ve been putting my life down on paper, listing what I spend my time doing because I’m trying to edit some things out in order to make more time for the things that are important to me. It’s kind of a process of self-reflection on how I’m living and spending time with my wife and children, which is a number one priority. But, I love my work as well, so that’s very important too.”
Searching for quality time.
“A lot of times I’ll work out of home. But, it can get in the way of being a dad. The kids pop in and I’m in the middle of things so I stop, but I’m not as present as I want to be. Now, I’m thinking I’ve got to put everything away, the computers, phones, BlackBerrys, people bothering you about whatever, and just be like, ‘OK, I’m just a daddy right now. I’m going to eat breakfast with my children, I’m going to play with blocks or toys whatever and just totally be with them.’”
Analyzing his success.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to be a pretty successful person, but I’ve realized that it doesn’t bring fulfillment. Success, of course, has a lot of fun stuff about it, but ultimately, if you’re the kind of person who lives in desire and constantly wants more, you’ll never be satisfied. So I’ve had a certain amount of success and I’m reaching for more and I have ambition, but I go, ‘Wait a second, this doesn’t make me happy, this isn’t really what fulfillment is.’”
Keeping his celebrity in perspective.
“I think I have about the right idea of how cool I am. I’m not trying to be a celebrity. Some people who get famous make bad choices — it depends on what you want out of life and who you want to be as a person. I like feeling good about myself as a human being, so if I make a choice that doesn’t support that, I stop pretty quickly. It’s really self-correcting.”
Getting older, but maybe not wiser.
“I’m always amazed at how, like when I was a kid, I definitely thought I was fairly intelligent about things and then you get a few years out and you look back and I’m always amazed at how little I knew. You go, ‘Wow, I had no clue.’ Now, it’s finally caught up to me, the point where I realize I just don’t know much at all, period.”
He was not in Brokeback Mountain.
“I’ve been mistaken for so many different actors, it’s just wild. I’ve gotten Jake Gyllenhaal a few times like, ‘Loved you in Brokeback Mountain.’ I’ve had that. I can’t remember all of them, but Wes Bentley, tons of times, and Elijah Wood. When people ask me for my autograph and say, ‘Oh, you were so great in such and such,’ which I wasn’t in, then I usually just sign the other actor’s name and say, ‘Thank you very much.’”

Tobey can be a real sourpuss with fans and with paparazzi, but he seems to have a good head on his shoulders. I did a quick review of our archives on him as I remembered that he had a rough childhood but I couldn’t recall the details. I found this older interview with Parade he did in 2007 in which he talked about the fact that his parents split when he was three and that he was shuffled around to different family members. He said “I realized at a young age that I was responsible for myself… I had plenty of difficult, emotional and scary times as a kid, but I don?t dwell on it.” Tobey went on to explain that his difficult upbring influenced his decision to do well in life “Growing up the way I did, I had a very serious ambition to make some money, to have some security and comfort in my life.”
Tobey is promoting Brothers, out tomorrow in the US and also starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman. There were some stories of minor diva antics on set between Jake and Tobey, particularly the two insisting on having their own personal makeup artists while the studio wanted to save money by having them share. I bet they got along fine.
Spiderman 4 is coming out in 2011, and may have been slightly delayed by Maguire’s insistence on having nights and mornings off to play with his kids. He has daughter Ruby Sweetheart, 3, and son Otis Tobias, 7 months, with wife Jennifer Meyer.

I used to really like Natalie Portman. I saw her as this smart Yale graduate with a commitment to activism and vegetarianism. Then she wrote that obnoxious piece for the Huffington Post that arguably - arguably - compared eating meat to rape. Maybe she didn’t mean it that way, but that’s how it read to a lot of people. She could have easily issued a clarification or a follow-up statement explaining that she was misinterpreted, but she never did.
Portman also signed the petition calling for Roman Polanski’s release. After that, I kind of soured on her and she became a well-intentioned holier-than-thou character to me. If she continues to be noncontroversial for a while or does something particularly nice I might change my mind.
Portman is doing a lot of publicity for her film Brothers, which is out this Friday. It’s about a woman whose husband (Tobey Maguire) goes away to the war in Iraq and is reported killed in action. She falls into the arms of his brother (Jake Gyllenhaal) and then her husband miraculously returns, only to throw her whole world askew. It looks like a bummer, frankly, and I don’t think it will do that well at the box office. Brothers is probably gunning for awards, though, and I bet Maguire and Gyllenhaal turn in very solid performances that could earn nominations. As for Portman, she just doesn’t do it for me, but many people think she’s a fabulous actress so we’ll see.
In an interview with Harpers Bazaar, only part of which is available online, Portman reminds us that she’s not a complete goody-goody by saying that she did smoke pot, but that she was in her 20s. She didn’t drink until she was in college, though:
Portman says she was “definitely working at a young age, but there’s a whole growth in that.” She got to spend three months in France when she was 11, shooting The Professional, and on her days off her mother would take her to Monet’s house in Giverny and encourage her to come home and paint a version of what she’d seen. When she traveled to Japan for the premiere of The Professional, her parents insisted on a week off to explore the country. Portman shrugs: “OK, so I didn’t really go to high school parties,” she says, “and yeah, I didn’t touch pot till I was in my 20s. I didn’t get flat-out drunk until I went to college. But I think that’s a good thing in many ways.”

Ok Natalie, we get it. You did smoke pot and drink but you waited so it’s not a big deal. This is just like the story that you cut yourself, but it’s ok because you only did it once. It’s like you’re just like us, but better.
Portman also has an interview in Parade, and she gives at least one interesting anecdote about how strict security is on set in the digital age. She also says she’d like to have kids but that she can’t plan for it:
A role she’s been waiting for.
“It was such a fantastic opportunity because so many parts written for females my age are just, like, the cute, girlish love interest. To get to play a real woman who’s really strong and a good mother was really a great opportunity. It was not that challenging to be mother-ish because I have the most maternal mom in the world. So I’ve had a role model for my entire life.”
Maybe she’s getting closer to a family of her own.
“I feel like I’m coming into my womanhood, and I’m less afraid or maybe I’m just getting old. I think about having kids, but I think you can’t plan for that sort of thing. It’s not like you can work at it.”
But she wouldn’t send her kids to war.
“I could not do it myself. But, I also think that in the world we live in, in certain countries, you can’t not have an army. Obviously, I’m referring specifically to Israel. I think if Israel didn’t have an army, it wouldn’t exist. That’s a hypothesis I really wouldn’t want to test, like the Israelis going, ‘OK, let’s just try it out and not have an army and see what happens.’”
Keeping her role in Thor, the next Marvel comics blockbuster, under wraps.
“I think everyone has gotten more secretive just because of the preponderance of technology that can scam just about anything. It’s like you don’t get a script anymore that doesn’t have watermarks that would identify you if you ever tried to leak anything. The Thor script is hard to read because it’s on some weird colored paper and they have your name in huge letters across every page. And any time you get a phone call from Marvel, it doesn’t come up as a normal number, it’s like a five digit code. I’ve never seen that before. I’ve had phone calls from people in the government and they don’t have that. Marvel’s like some like crazy underground world.”

At least we don’t hear a lot about Portman when she’s not promoting something. I know technically I should admire her because she seems relatively normal, smart and scandal-free, but I don’t have strong feelings either way. A commenter on the Huffington Post compared her to Anne Hathaway because they both have this kind of superior pseudo-intellectual way about them. Hathaway definitely annoys me, but Portman only sort-of grates on my nerves, like a sluggish fly you open the window for hoping it will find its way out on its own.

Actress Natalie Portman goes green in a photo shoot for next month’s Marie Claire magazine. Not green as in “eco-friendly”; green as in “she’s in the middle of the damn woods in a stupid pork-pie hat.” All she’s missing is the bow and arrow and a band of merry men.

Unlike most teenage Hollywood stars, Natalie Portman admits she was a bit of a late bloomer.
In the new issue of Marie Claire, the 28-year-old brunette beauty tells, “OK, so I didn’t really go to any high school parties.”
When asked about marijuana, Portman simply replied, “And yeah, I didn’t touch pot til I was in my 20s.”
The “Star Wars” actress also divulged that she didn’t really touch alcohol until she began attending Harvard University. She admits, “I didn’t get flat-out drunk until I went to college.”

Stepping out for a night on the red carpet, Natalie Portman was looking lovely at IFP’s 19th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards at Cipriani, Wall Street in New York City on Monday (November 30).
The “My Blueberry Nights” babe mingled with fellow attendees before her podium duties, smiling as she posed for pictures alongside Stanley Tucci.
The awards show outing comes as Miss Portman has been getting into promotional mode for her new movie “Brothers,” which hits theaters this Friday (December 4).
Co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire, the Jim Sheridan directed flick is about “a young man who comforts his older brother’s wife and children after he goes missing in Afghanistan.”
