Salma Hayek was chosen as one of the Duchess of Sussex?s ?impactful? people for the British Vogue cover and cover profile. Sidenote: I hate the rise of ?impactful? to describe sh-t these days, it?s one of those dumb buzzwords used by people like Gwyneth Paltrow. Anyway, Salma is no stranger to magazine covers, but she was honored to be chosen by Meghan all the same. Salma does a lot of charity work and advocacy work, and that seems to be why Meghan chose Salma, although Salma makes it sound like Meghan didnt have a specific idea about which organization Salma should promote. Salma chatted with CNN about the project and more:
Edward Enninful called her and told he was about to patch her through to someone: I was in the car and he said, Listen, Im going to put somebody on the phone. Are you in the car with people? I said Yes. He told me you cannot say the name of the person Im calling. Frankly, I thought it was a joke. And we are also very good friends with Naomi Campbell. And I thought, theyre pulling my leg or something, you know? I said, Oh, shes in London and hes gonna pass me to her. But then it took a while for the other person to get on the phone. Then she got on the phone and introduced herself.
Speaking to Meghan over the phone: She introduced herself and was very kind and loving and easy going, Hayek says, adding that Markle started to explain a future project in support of women she was working on. Hayek says because shes worked with womens charities for 25 years, she was expecting Markle to inquire about teaming up for a specific organization she had in mind. (Hayek is on the board of the Kering Foundation, which combats violence against women, and helped with Chime for Change, a campaign for Gucci to promote womens rights worldwide. She is also an advocate for refugees.)
Salma on how it was explained to her: I got excited. Im thinking and Im trying to find the logic to this strange day. She explained her passion for women and whats happening currently. And then she said shes doing this with British Vogue. She said, you know, she was the guest editor of British Vogue, and Im thinking maybe its going to be an article on what were doing, you know, with Kering and women, and she said no, Im [doing a cover], Im not going to be the cover, Im putting my favorite women on the cover. And youre definitely one of them. You one of the first ones. I was like completely shocked. I did not see it coming that way. She started talking about how shes been watching me and why me.
Salma couldn?t tell her husband, daughter, or publicist. I couldnt talk about it and I didnt. I felt very honored when we did this photo shoot. No one else knew what it was for. Only me and the photographer, Peter Lindbergh, knew. And all the girls were getting their picture taken for the cover and they didnt know that Meghan was how they got there.
Salma on Meghan?s idea of guest-editing: I loved that she didnt want to be on the cover. She used her light to put it upon others, the ones who inspired her.
Whether she plans to meet Meghan in person: Maybe. Maybe its not something youre gonna see. I think we had a connection before we even talked to each other. The shock is that this person had been watching me and I had no idea. Its really beautiful and I really do think that we have a special connection.

I get that Salma was and is honored to be included, but I find the details of the phone call to be slightly off-putting? It?s not like Meghan?s idea of a multi-person Inspo Lady cover was so groundbreaking or never-before-seen. Most magazines have done some version of that in the past. And I also find it weird that Meghan didn?t seem to choose Salma for the express purpose of promoting one particular charity or the Kering Foundation. Isn?t that the point? To draw attention to the work these cover subjects are doing? I don?t know, maybe Salma is explaining it the wrong way.

The BAFTAs felt somewhat low-key last night, probably because they fell yet again on the same night as the Grammys for all of us Americans. We have to make a choice about what to watch live, and most of us choose the Grammys. Salma Hayek attended the awards show as a presenter, and to represent Mexican filmmaking and Roma specifically. She ended up presenting her friend Alfonso Cuaron with his Best Director BAFTA. Salma wore one of the labels owned by her husband, Gucci, and I actually don?t hate the gown. It?s quite beautiful, really. What I don?t like is the headband and her hair. What awful styling choices for such a pretty gown.
Glenn Close still feels like a sure thing for the Best Actress Oscar, but she lost the BAFTA last night the Best Actress award went to Olivia Colman, as The Favourite picked up tons of awards. Still, Glenn looked regal in this Alexander McQueen dress.
Here?s Michelle Yeoh in Elie Saab Haute Couture. I?ve enjoyed seeing Michelle at every awards show this year! She looks amazing.
Letitia Wright won the BAFTA Rising Star award. She wore a fantastic Stella McCartney suit!
Rami Malek also wore white, and he picked up the Best Actor award for Bohemian Rhapsody. I still feel like? something might happen in this category at the Oscars.

Here are some photos of Salma Hayek at this year?s Cannes Film Festival. She was there to attend premieres, walk in the Women?s March, and talk about the need for changes in the industry so that the Harvey Weinsteins of the world would never be able to prey on victims so thoroughly for years. Salma wrote a New York Times essay about Weinstein and what he did to her over the course of years, how he harassed her and bullied her and more. Weinstein actually released a statement directly about Salma?s accusations, just like he did when Lupita Nyong?o told her story about Weinstein. Salma noticed the pattern.
On Sunday at the Cannes Film Festival, Salma Hayek alleged that Harvey Weinstein, who hadn?t responded to other actresses? claims, denied her and Nyong?o?s accounts because they were both women of color.
?We are the easiest to get discredited,? she told Variety?s Ramin Setoodeh at the Women In Motion panel. ?It is a well-known fact. So he went back, attacking the two women of color, in hopes that if he could discredit us.?
Hayek was one of 82 women, led by jury president Cate Blanchett, who protested Cannes? gender imbalance on Saturday night. The figure symbolized the small fraction of women, 82, who have directed one of the 1,645 films to screen at the festival since 1947. Hayek called the moment profound and beautiful, but warned the industry not to be too complacent.

True or false: Harvey Weinstein released statements about both Salma and Lupita because they are women of color? Or was it because they are both so powerful and well-respected? I think it?s both the essay from Lupita was startling because she exists in the zeitgeist as such a beloved fashion-princess and Oscar-winner, and to hear her describe being victimized and harassed by Weinstein brought home the fact that literally NO ONE was safe. Same with Salma Hayek, quite honestly. But yes, I do think Salma is right: Weinstein denied her story and Lupita?s story specifically because of they are women of color.
Salma also called on male stars to take pay cuts so that women can make more. That?s probably not going to happen, but it?s a good jumping-off point for a larger conversation about how we get to equal pay across the board.

Salma Hayek, you may recall, wore one of the crazier Oscar gowns last night. It had a skirt of many ruffled lilac sequin layers, the bodice had crystals dripping across the front and sides and it was just blinding on camera. Kaiser floated the idea that Salma did not GAF and that she found it pretty. I’m leaning more to her not giving AF with her Vanity Fair Oscar Party look, which was like stiff fancy pajamas. We’ve seen plenty of pajamas as outwear looks recently. This was a cropped jacket with puffy bell sleeves over a floor length skirt.
The back of the jacket says “Dapper Dan.” I only know that as George Clooney’s character’s pomade of choice in O Brother, Where Art Thou? but it’s a brand that is collaborating with Gucci. Dapper Dan is a Harlem-based couturier, Daniel Day, who is known for pioneering hip hop fashion in the 80s and 90s. He was sued by major fashion labels back then and is making a comeback, with Gucci in particular acknowledging his contributions. (Apparently they were called out for copying some of his designs, so they decided to work with him.) I just learned about this fashion icon thanks to Salma’s outfit. Let’s listen to one of my favorite songs of all time, “Paid in Full” by Eric B & Rakim, whom Dan used to dress. Now that I’m listening to golden era rap I f-king love this outfit.
Emma Stone was in Louis Vuitton, whom she represents. I really liked her Oscars jacket and pants combo with the contrasting sash. This dress is a little short for my taste, I would like it to be longer with a tuxedo jacket on top, but I like the details like the leather straps, the buttons across the front and the color blocking. This is modern and fresh.
Newly single Alicia Silverstone looked amazing in hot a Pink sleeveless mock neck gown. She’s got a new show coming out in June, based on the life of Kyle Richards from the RHOBH. It sounds bizarre but it might be decent.
Amy Adams was in a navy mermaid Christian Siriano gown with awesome 80s details like puff sleeves and an asymmetric neckline. I would wear this with the flimsiest of excuses, this is gorgeous. Check out her impressive hoop earrings too. Why wasn’t she at the Oscars proper? I want to see more of Amy, she’s still waiting for her g-damn Oscar.
Laura Dern continued the white theme in a Gabriela Hearst suit over a La Perla bustier. She paired it with a red clutch. QUEEN.

Thank God Salma Hayek was only wearing a wig! Salma ?went blonde? for the pre-BAFTA event at Kensington Palace on Saturday night and she looked so? odd. But she was back to black at the BAFTAs last night and now her face doesn?t look so ?worked on.? It?s so weird how a hair change can make someone?s face look so different all of a sudden. Anyway, Salma attended the BAFTAs with her husband Francois, the billionaire. She wore one of the labels he owns, Gucci. I don?t hate this? It?s flattering, it keeps with the red carpet blackout, and it?s still pretty interesting.
Letitia Wright (from Black Panther) also wore a black Gucci, and apparently Gucci is doing a lot with bejeweled bugs these days (Salma wore bejeweled bugs to the pre-BAFTA event). Again, I love the bejeweled bugs. And I love the simplicity of this gown.
Sally Hawkins in Ralph & Russo. I like this? I don?t think of Sally as a fashionista, but she?s been doing well this awards season. This is conservative and yet it?s got an edge to it with the sheer streaks running through the top.
I think very highly of Gugu Mbatha-Raw, both of her talent and her beauty. This Cardinali gown doesn?t really do her justice – it?s too conservative and stately, in my opinion. It?s not really a bad dress, I just wish it was on someone like Helen Mirren.

Here are more photos from the Palm Springs International Film Festival?s opening night gala. SO many celebrities came out for it, which is nice, until you remember that most of these celebrities probably just fancied a few relaxing days in Palm Springs, getting facials and massages and doing an hour-long Q&A session here and there. Salma Hayek was there, and she wore this bright Gucci gown. I actually like this a lot? Salma has access to so many interesting looks through her husband?s business, but she?s been choosing some of the worst gowns for the past few years. This Gucci dress is flattering and pretty.
Jessica Chastain wore a black lace Givenchy to the Palm Springs opening night. I?m meh on the dress – it looks like something the Duchess of Cambridge would wear. She made a speech too, about how change is coming, and how #NotAllMen are total douchebags.
Gal Gadot in Esteban Cortazar. You guys might remember that I have a thing about yellow and orange on red carpets. Like, I hate almost every yellow or orange gown ever, and I believe that they have no place on a red carpet. So? yeah, I?m not crazy about this gown. But I?ve come to believe, in the past year, that Gal Gadot really isn?t a fashionista. I don?t think she cares that much.
It cracks me up that Armie Hammer was, at one point, considered a shoo-in for Best Supporting Actor this year. His big mouth has really hampered his Oscar campaign, and it?s sort of funny.
Is Gary Oldman still a big contender for Best Actor for his Churchill movie? Hm.

If you haven?t read it already, you need to prepare yourself emotionally, because it is another gut-wrenching story about Harvey Weinstein. Salma talks at length about why she didn?t come forward sooner, and it?s a vivid portrait of how even one of the most famous and beautiful women in the world can still deal with the guilt and self-blaming that comes with being abused and being harassed. She acknowledges that her story isn?t better or worse than other stories about Harvey Weinstein, and acknowledges that her friendships and connections with powerful people in Weinstein?s orbit – people like Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino and George Clooney – probably ?saved? her from a worse fate. Salma Hayek took a page out of the Kylie Jenner playbook and conducted a hair experiment on Sunday night. The 50-year-old actress showed up at the Women in Motion event, held as part of the Cannes Film Festival, with Pink locks. The Pink hue matched the flower designs on her black Gucci gown. Salma walked the red carpet at the event with husband Franois-Henri Pinault, whose company, Kering, threw the shindig.
Salma showed off her new look on Instagram, giving props to her beauty squad, including celebrity hair colorist Aura Friedman, who was responsible for the color, and hairstylist Jennifer Yepez, who curled her hair into bombshell-worthy waves. Her posts from the event generated positive feedback from her fans.

I feel like Salma Hayek is kind of over at this point, or maybe it’s just that I’m personally over her. She wears designs by her husband’s various labels and they it’s like they put her in the worst looks thinking she’s fashion-forward enough to pull them off and she just isn’t. That’s the case with this very plain black Balenciaga jersey(?) dress paired with Balenciaga boot pants. These boots retail for $1,395 at Neiman Marcus and they’re supposed to make this look, considering how boring that dress is. The boots make her look like she’s wearing half of one of those full body spandex fan suits. This is not in keeping with the theme and it just falls flat.
Lily Aldridge was in white Ralph Lauren, in a white silk cutout gown with a long train which fares much better than Salma’s dress at fitting the theme. She’s also wearing those Balenciaga boots (thanks Kaiser!) in red and she has on a Pink half veil, as if she didn’t want to too closely match the color of her veil and boots. I don’t really understand what she was going for here, but she’s trying to make it work and you can see the effort she’s putting into it.
Emily Ratajkowski had on a formfitting sequin Marc Jacobs gown which had nothing to do with the theme but was so pretty nonetheless. It looks like a homage to Van Gogh, and someone on twitter compared her to that rainbow fish children’s book. It’s a beautifully constructed gown that fits her like a glove and I love the black band under the bustline, but again it’s just not for this event.

Salma Hayek?s new movie, How to be a Latin Lover, looks really dumb. But that?s what she?s promoting these days, so we?re getting a fresh promotional tour from Salma. Instead of just talking endlessly about how she doesn?t believe in Botox, Salma has decided to use her position as Mexican-American woman to talk sh-t about Donald Trump. I?m here for it, honestly. During the campaign, Salma openly despised Trump to the point where she didn?t even want to say his name. Nowadays, she?s focused on Trump?s wishy-washy desire to build a bigly, beautiful border wall. She gave an exclusive interview to People Magazine about just that:
The border wall: ?It?s a dumb solution and proposition. Whether it gets built, whether it doesn?t get built, nobody has given you a real budget on it ? we do know it?s billions and billions of dollars. We?re talking about who?s going to pay for it and the wall is not the solution. How is this wall that is immense going to go through the many rivers? Are you going to build dams? Are you going to go up and down the mountains??
The real issue is immigration reform. ?Sometimes we talk about the wrong part of the issues. And that can be a trick, talking about the wrong part of the issue and not dealing with it, or talking about the wrong issues, which distract from other issues ? we have to be careful not to fall in that trap. We have to talk about smart reforms because it?s very necessary. There are smarter ways we can come up with to control immigration, and do immigration reform that is much more beneficial for America. For example, there?s a lot of work for farmers in this country and there are not enough farmers for all the work there is. A lot of the people that do not want to be involved in the drug industry of Mexico are very skilled farmers; they do not want to participate in that so some of them are here. The people that come, they don?t necessarily want to stay ? they would be happy to come and work at the time of the harvest and go back to their country. America can benefit from these expert workers and they can pay taxes that can benefit America.?

I mean, obviously I agree with what she?s saying, although I?m sort of confused by the idea of migrant workers who will happily leave the US when the harvest season is over. Perhaps I don?t fully understand the economics and reality of seasonal migrant work, but Salma seems to be oversimplifying? I wish she would also talk about the utter inhumanity and stupidity of the Attorney General?s war with sanctuary cities. Or she could talk about Ted Cruz?s El Chapo Act, wherein the US would use drug cartel money to build the border wall. Salma should give more political interviews, basically.
Also, have you seen the trailer for Beatriz at Dinner? I think this looks so good.
