Michelle Dockery revealed her Prada-clad baby bump at the 'Downton' premiere
I?ve accidentally been doing a Downton Abbey rewatch in recent months and remembering which storylines I enjoyed. I guess I?m preparing myself for the final film: Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. This seems to be the real goodbye to the franchise which started fourteen years ago. The big scandal of this latest movie is that Black Widow Mary didn?t kill off another lover: she let her second husband leave by divorce. She is now a divorced woman, looking after a grand estate in what is surely the 1930s by now??

Anyway, there was a big premiere in London last night! I was so happy to see Michelle Dockery revealing a big baby bump. Michelle lost one of her great loves, her fiance John Dineen, to cancer in 2015. Years later, she married Jasper Waller-Bridge in 2023. She?s now expecting their first child at the age of 43! Good for her. Her premiere look was Prada, btw. The dress is fine, but her hair is kind of terrible!

I?m including more premiere photos Allen Leech (Tom Branson, always one of my favorites), Joanne Froggert (in Cong Tri), and Laura Carmichael in Harris Reid. Laura?s dress is not great, but she looks good overall. Also, Joely Richardson looked magnificent in a regal red gown. She?s playing some new character in the movie.

Scandal: Prince George, Charlotte & Louis all use 'Wales' as a surname at school

Scandal: Prince George, Charlotte & Louis all use 'Wales' as a surname at school
For most of this year, there?s been an endless amount of discourse about the Duchess of Sussex?s surname. Within With Love, Meghan, she told Mindy Kaling that ?I?m Sussex now? when Mindy referred to her as ?Meghan Markle.? Meghan told People Mag that she and her family (including Archie and Lili) use Sussex as their surname and they consider it their shared family name. Palace insiders and protocol police have been ripping out their hair and wailing like banshees for months. Even in Meghan?s interview with Emily Chang last week, Chang once again asked Meghan to clarify the Sussex surname situation. Everyone acted as if it was completely unheard-of for a royal or titled family to use their ducal/earldom/whatever title as a surname. Well, as part of People Magazine?s ?no sh-t, Sherlock? royal coverage, they slipped in a fun little story about what names Prince George, Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte use at school. You?re not going to believe this, you guys.

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are off to a new school year, but they wont be using their royal titles in the classroom. Prince William and Kate Middletons three children are known to their teachers and friends at school as George Wales, Charlotte Wales and Louis Wales, with the surname taken from their parents titles as the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Though the children all received prince or princess titles and His or Her Royal Highness styling at birth, going by their first name and the surname of Wales is a more informal address that allows them to blend in with the student body.

When a last name is necessary, its tradition within the royal family for children to use their parents titles as the basis for their last name. Prince William and Prince Harry were similarly called William Wales and Harry Wales while at school and in the military, as their father, the future King Charles, was then the Prince of Wales.

However, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, didnt always go by the last name of Wales in the classroom. Queen Elizabeth made William and Kate the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge when they wed in 2011, and the couples children were previously called George Cambridge, Charlotte Cambridge and Louis Cambridge at school. When Prince George started school at Thomas?s Battersea in September 2017, a close look at the name tag on his backpack showed said George Cambridge.

Last names are a bit tricky within the British royal family, and in 1960, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip decided that their direct descendants would have the last name of Mountbatten-Windsor. The royal couple tacked Mountbatten onto the British royal familys official surname of Windsor, which was adopted by King George V in 1917.

However, it became a custom within the family for later generations of children with royal titles to use their parents titles as the inspiration for their surname. As Prince William was called William Wales, his cousins, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, used York as their last name as their father, Prince Andrew, is the Duke of York.

[From People]

I already knew this, as did anyone with even a passing interest in British royalty. Harry and William both used ?Wales? as a surname when they were in school and in the military. Beatrice and Eugenie both used York as a surname. When QEII died, there were stories updating the titles of the Wales kids and specifying that they were no longer ?of Cambridge? but now ?of Wales.? And yet, it was a five-alarm fire when Meghan called herself Meg Sussex, and said that her children use Sussex as a surname. Gee, I wonder why? In any case, I certainly hope that we get at least twenty huffy Daily Mail columns about how using ?Wales? as a surname is a slap in the face to QEII, and how NO ONE would ever dream of using their title as a last name OR a married name.

Emerald Fennell's 'Wuthering Heights' adaptation looks *terrible*
Emerald Fennell?s adaptation of Emily Bronte?s Wuthering Heights has been controversial ever since it was announced. People simply didn?t trust Fennell to adapt the classic novel, and they certainly weren?t happy with the casting choices for Cathy and Heathcliff: Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. When paparazzi snapped photos from the production, there were more waves of disappointment Fennell didn?t seem to care about accurate period details, and Margot simply looks way too old to play Catherine (who is supposed to be a teenager). There were also significant complaints about the ?whitewashing? of Heathcliff.

Well, about a month ago, Fennell and studio organized some of the first screenings for the film, and most of the audience fking despised this adaptation. World of Reel reported that ?The film, described by one attendee as aggressively provocative and tonally abrasive, leans hard into Fennell?s now-familiar brand of stylized depravity. It?s a deliberately unromantic take on Bront?s novel, stripped of emotional nuance and full of salacious detours that serve shock value.? I have no idea if those screenings convinced Fennell to re-edit or change anything, but it doesn?t look like it. The teaser for Wuthering Heights came out this week and it looks TERRIBLE.

Yeah, this just looks awful. In case you?re wondering, that?s new music by CharliXCX in the trailer. LMAO. Two of the nicer arguments being made: one, if Fennell wanted to do a big, sexy, BDSM-tinged period romance, she probably should have just written an original script and not claimed that it was an adaptation of one of the biggest classic novels in the English language; two, Elordi probably could have pulled this off, but Margot absolutely CANNOT. I love Margot and I think she?s an underrated actress (truly) but she can?t play EVERY character, you know?

Newsweek: Is 'With Love, Meghan' in danger of not being renewed for a third season'

Newsweek: Is 'With Love, Meghan' in danger of not being renewed for a third season'
When I watched the first season of With Love, Meghan, I thought that while the production ?looked expensive,? it was probably a relatively inexpensive show to produce. So I was surprised when the Duchess of Sussex spoke about WLM having an 80-person crew. Where? Why? I had to adjust my thoughts and expectations around the production. Originally, I thought that Netflix would support WLM indefinitely because hey, it was cheap to produce and they had the synergy of the As Ever line to support as well. But if WLM really has an 80-plus person crew, it?s really expensive to produce for what it is a homey cooking/lifestyle show with what looks like sagging ratings for the second season. I?m not saying that Meghan, Netflix or Sussex fans should hit any panic buttons, but it?s worth discussing the idea that if WLM gets a third and fourth season, some changes might need to be made.

Meghan Markles cooking show failed to make the top 10 on Netflix, and PR experts told Newsweek that the slump will likely rule out a third season. However, despite the negative sentiment, the shows first season did make the global, U.S. and U.K. top 10, with 2.6 million views. The second season, however, failed to make the list in all three regions with no decision yet made on whether to renew for Season 3.

With Love, Meghan debuted in March to scathing reviews in both Britain and America, alongside a wave of mocking parodies by influencers on TikTok. Eric Schiffer, chairman of Reputation Management Consultants, told Newsweek: When a royal brand cant crack the board, its likely an obituary for season 3. Even with Chrissy Teigen and Tan France glitter-bombing the set, the series hit the pavement. Given that its missed by a mile, where even hate watchers stayed home, Season 3 is unlikely.

Teigen was a guest in one episode and brought her husband, musician John Legend, briefly on set, while Queer Eye fashion expert France got Meghan talking about her relationship with Prince Harry during filming.

Nick Ede, a U.K. based brand and culture expert, agreed: I doubt it will be renewed because Netflix is all about algorithms, its all about viewers, its all about touch points that create zeitgeisty moments. The first season did that. The second season was panned. The guests werent particularly great, so that didnt elevate it. There wasnt particularly a PR push, apart from Meghan doing one interview. It felt like a side dish rather than a main dish.

With Love will return for a holiday special in December, but otherwise fans are still waiting to find out if it gets recommissioned for a third season. Schiffer said Meghan had been too risk averse in the first two seasons, but could try to pitch a slightly different concept for a third season that pushed the boundaries far more.

Can she turn it around? Of course, Schiffer said. Shes one big creative idea away from making it interesting. They could go back and pitch Season 3 as something that would shock everyone and create a lot of buzz, but a ruthless read from a PR war room would be that the shows cozy authenticity didnt get traction, it failed bad. The lifestyle lane is unforgiving. Unless you either have some repeatable utility or can shock hardcore then viewers are going to ghost you like an ex. Youre competing with influencers and YouTube and minds that are willing to take those risks.?

[From Newsweek]

Two things. One, I was surprised that Meghan didn?t do a bigger promotional push for the second season as well, and I do think that?s a factor with the second season?s ratings. I still don?t understand why Meghan and Harry are so averse to promoting their projects, and I thought that we had turned a new leaf when Meghan did a lot to promote WLM?s first season. Two, I also think that WLM could be shaken up conceptually. I?m not saying ?turn it into a cupcake death battle,? but figure out why the audience responded to certain episodes over other ones. As I?ve said before, the show is better when Meghan is the student, when she?s learning some new dish or skill. All of that and? maybe you don?t need an 80-person crew for a cooking show?

Times: Is Princess Kate 'allowed' to change up her hairstyle significantly'

Times: Is Princess Kate 'allowed' to change up her hairstyle significantly'
One of the great things about Princess Diana was that she was both a trendsetter and a trend-follower. She loved the ?more is more? ethos of 1980s fashion and styling, and then, right on trend, she went for a cleaner, more minimalist look in the 1990s. Diana switched up her hairstyles with frequency, and so many women copied her hair. Well, the inheritor of the Princess of Wales title is also known for her style and her hair, although the comparisons between Kate and Diana have always been strained, if not completely ridiculous. Well, Kate?s big appearance today in London has got people talking about her hair/wig and what it all means. Is Kate ?allowed? to change her hair color this dramatically? Is she the first brunette in her 40s to go with a lighter color? The Times of London had this piece:

On a visit to London?s Natural History Museum today, the Princess of Wales was elegantly put together as always but with one big difference. Kate has gone blonde. In truth, she?s been creeping this way for some time. At first it was ?bronde?, a gentle lightening of her dark brown hair; by the time of the French presidential visit in July, it was closer to caramel; now it looks to have edged towards honey blonde. Our first glimpse of her new look came last month, when she was seen with fairer-looking hair in the car on the way to church from Balmoral, though it wasn?t clear if it was just a trick of the light. But today?s pictures are confirmation that she has definitely lightened up.

Which may seem like no news at all. It?s usual to see celebrities reveal drastic makeovers: an extreme haircut for a new film role, expensive cosmetic surgery in time for red-carpet season. Kate having a few highlights shouldn?t be a shock. But our expectations of modern royals are anything but modern.

Queen Elizabeth II set the expectations for a royal woman ageing in the public eye: to be always and instantly recognisable to your public. Camilla hasn?t changed her hair in years ? it?s just a fraction lighter than it was 25 years ago, and I wouldn?t be surprised if she?s still using the same round brush to blow-dry those flicky-out ends. Perhaps it?s to ensure consistency on those commemorative plates. Kate was a brunette at her royal wedding, so brunette she must stay.

But she?s also part of a younger generation ? mine, actually ? though she may seem much more pulled together than most millennials. I was 12 when I first dyed my hair in the bathtub at home; 15 when I had blonde highlights. The temptation to go blonde is strong when pop culture and beauty ideals tell you that you?re missing something; that blondes have more fun, that gentlemen prefer them. I went blonde again in my late twenties, peroxide this time. And since the greys have started peppering my brunette hair, I?ve been discussing with my hairdresser a few honeyish streaks of my own, the better to blend in greys.

That warm, flattering, face-brightening honey shade is a go-to, almost a default, for white women in their forties, fifties and sixties, as much a hair milestone as the new-mum bob or the break-up big chop. With Jennifer Aniston as a poster girl, it?s a transition that many of Kate?s close friends will be making around her. Her mother, Carole, has slices of warm blonde in her bob.

Supporting British fashion houses boosts the economy, but it seems that public opinion deems it undignified for our royals to stray too far into vanity ? as if a hair transplant for a receding royal may weaken the empire. Where do we draw the line? Will the Wales children be allowed dodgy teenage hair? Emo side-sweeps, self-cut fringes ? not tattoos or piercings, surely? Where do we stand on traintrack braces ? and would they be allowed to choose any colour for their elastics, or is there a pre-approved palette?

[From The Times]

Here?s the thing no reasonable person actually *wanted* Kate to keep the same general hairstyle and color for the rest of her married life. When she brought out the doll-wig extensions in her first year of marriage, it?s like she got addicted to that particular look the sausage curls, the volume and the length. People who actually like Kate and want her to look her best have been begging her for years to ditch the wiglets and hairpieces and just get a cute shoulder-length bob. I wouldn?t even take issue with the color and I don?t consider this blonde, it?s caramel or bronde specifically because this is what so many women do as they deal with grey hair, they go lighter. But they also go shorter too, which Kate seems incapable of. And just to be clear, this was not Kate sitting at a hair salon for hours to achieve this color.
