| Are Chelsea Handler & Stephen Colbert the top choices to replace Letterman? | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

As Bedhead discussed last week, David Letterman announced his retirement last Thursday. Letterman is kind of leaving things open-ended, to the point where I really think he?s going to work with CBS to figure out who will replace him. Dave won?t be leaving until 2015, and he and CBS will probably spend a lot of time figuring this out, you know? The names being thrown around in the immediate wake of the retirement announcement probably won?t be the shortlist six months from now, is what I?m saying. Still, let?s talk about the names that have popped up right away.
Last Friday, Sarah at LaineyGossip made her case for why it will probably be Jimmy Kimmel, and I think Kimmel is probably one of the early ?big contenders? that they?ll be speaking to. Here?s one that I hope gets pushed aside really quickly: Chelsea Handler. I?m suspicious of the fact that Chelsea announced her retirement from E! just days before Letterman, and The Wrap says there?s good reason for my suspicion:
Chelsea Handler is in talks with CBS for a late-night talk show, an individual close to the producer and E! talk show host told TheWrap. CBS contacted Handler to discuss the potential of hosting a syndicated show in the wake of her announcing this week that she’s leaving E! when her contract expires at the end of the year. But Handler has told CBS that she isn’t interested in that option. As a result, CBS then expressed interest in considering Handler for Craig Ferguson’s 12:30 a.m. slot.
She will be meeting with CBS Corp.’s chairman and CEO Les Moonves in the next few weeks to continue the discussions of joining CBS’s late-night lineup, the individual said. But, Letterman’s retirement announcement on Thursday has changed the landscape for her. Handler now has her eye on Letterman’s ?Late Show? spot instead. Either timeslot would make her the first woman to host a late-night broadcast show since Cynthia Garrett hosted NBC’s ?Later? from 2000-2001. CBS declined comment to TheWrap.
Of course, she’ll have to prove to CBS that she can break out of her niche audience and appeal to a more general audience for CBS to consider her for the spot. A role with CBS is just one of the projects that Handler has been considering. Ideally, she wanted a weekly radio show on Sirius XM with a taped version of the show on Netflix, the latter of which she’s already in talks with, according to the individual. (Netflix told TheWrap that Handler had not been in talks with the company about a show.)
The insider said that she has also been approached by Jeff Zucker for CNN or HLN and by FX. But, again, the Letterman spot has changed things for her. It is now No. 1 on her list. The CBS-Handler talks would also suggest that the network was at the very least entertaining a replacement for Craig Ferguson at 12:30 a.m. The ?Late, Late Show? host reportedly has right of first refusal for Letterman’s spot, although CBS may not want to give it to him.
[From The Wrap]
My take: it would be sacrilegious to have Chelsea Handler take the reins at The Late Show, and it?s making my skin crawl just thinking about Handler being mentioned in the same breath as David Letterman. She is not network TV material. Full-stop. I would argue that she?s not even cable material, but whatever.
There are also lots of people saying it should be Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert, who basically run little fiefdoms over on Comedy Central. Whenever Stewart or Colbert negotiate their contracts, Viacom basically throws money at them and gives them whatever they want. Both Colbert and Stewart are extremely popular in the key demos that CBS would want for late-night shows and I could see Letterman pushing either man as his replacement. Mashable has a lengthy article (you can read it here) about why it?s totally going to be Colbert. The basics? Jon Stewart probably isn?t interested in going network because he?s working on lots of side-projects (like directing his feature debut, Rosewater) and doesn?t want to be tied down with a network contract. As for Colbert, sources say that he would have to drop ?the character? he plays on The Colbert Report and he would have to do less politics and do more celebrity interviews, and it?s not clear he would want to do that.
Other names in the mix: Neil Patrick Harris (a CBS/Viacom company man, they love him over there), Tina Fey (she?s more of an NBC woman, but she could travel) and Aisha Tyler (she?s on CBS?s The Talk, so she?s in-house). I think it would a SIN to approach Chelsea Handler like she?s the only woman who could possibly do the show ? if Chelsea?s in the mix, then BY GOD Tina and Aisha need to take meetings too. But I think it will probably be a dude, and that dude will be Colbert, Stewart, Kimmel or? yeah, Neil Patrick Harris. I think grooming NPH for that job would actually be inspired. He’s likable, he has broad appeal, he loves to dress up, he loves to sing and dance… it could work.

| Chelsea Handler is leaving E! after her contract is up this year: bad news or yay? | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

I?m getting a funny feeling about this story. And when I say ?funny? I mean ?delightful schadenfreude.? According to an exclusive with The Hollywood Reporter, Chelsea Handler is going to finish up her contract with E! (she has nine months left) and then she?s going to leave the network to pursue other opportunities. Is this Chelsea?s choice? Or was she pushed? That?s the question. Over the past few months, there were a handful of stories about E! finally going hard on Chelsea and telling her to STFU about Angelina Jolie and to stop with all of the racist crap. Of course, there she was on Oscar night, tweeting racist crap for HuffPo. So, are the powers that be at E! finally sick of her vodka-soaked shenanigans or does Chelsea think she?s outgrown E!?
Chelsea Handler plans to leave the E! channel when her contract expires at the end of the year, bringing a close to her Chelsea Lately talk show after eight years, according to her manager, Irving Azoff. Handler has long been vocal about her dissatisfaction with the network though such complaints could be perceived as part of a negotiation. In this case, Azoff tells The Hollywood Reporter, “Chelsea intends to leave when her contract expires. She hired me to figure out her life after E! We have at least seven suitors and many ideas.? He adds that plans for Handler could include a radio presence and a possible nightly or weekly late-night show on another network or digital service.
An E! spokesperson stated to THR: “Chelsea has nine months left on her contract and E! will not comment on the future of Chelsea Lately at this time.”
Handler is said to feel that she is at the top of her game with a new book, Uganda be Kidding Me — her first to sit at No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list for more than a week. She is in the midst of a tour of more than 30 markets, “a massive piece of business” that also will include dates overseas, according to Geof Wills, president of Live Nation Comedy. She will shoot her first stand-up special at the Harris Theatre in Chicago in June to air on cable in October.
Handler’s reps at CAA have been setting meetings with companies including Sony Television and Lionsgate as well as FX to discuss her future. The extent of interest in her in those quarters is not clear. ?I don?t know if anybody?s going to pay her as much as E!,? says a source at one company that has been contacted.
Handler is said to be making about $9 million a year while delivering average viewership of 572,000 a night — a decline from 839,000 in 2010. Ad revenue also has dipped more than 15 percent in recent years to $134.5 million, according to Kantar Media.
Handler has been open about her frustration with programming at E! In a March 5 appearance on Howard Stern?s radio show, she described E! as ?a sad, sad place to live,? adding, ?They don?t know what they?re doing. They have no ideas. It?s a failure.?
While comics such as Jay Leno long have slung mud at their television homes, it?s hard to imagine that NBCUniversal cable entertainment chairman Bonnie Hammer was amused by Handler?s appraisal of her strategy to rebrand E! over the past few years as a more ?aspirational? network. A source at one company on the list to meet with Handler says those public remarks might make potential suitors think twice.
?When you see talent go after a network like that, you think one day it could be me,? this person says. Handler said on Stern?s show that she?d like a forum like Netflix. Broadcast networks probably are out, given Handler?s raunchy brand of humor.
[From THR]
I laughed at the viewership and advertising data ? it doesn?t seem like Chelsea?s popularity is on the upswing at all, does it? Her manager tried to spin the data and make it sound like Chelsea is still ?winning? even though her viewership has taken a major hit over the past few years (mostly as people have wised up to her nasty, racist shtick), and I guess it?s worth noting that Chelsea is still selling books and she?s still an in-demand stand-up comedienne.
All that being said, do you think Chelsea will be able to relaunch herself on another cable platform or even ? gasp! ? network TV? I have my doubts. In addition to bad-mouthing E!, Chelsea has also bad-mouthed her own limited abilities to, you know, gossip about celebrities. Cheslea sees herself as the second coming of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. That?s what she really wants to do ? gossip about the news. And please, remember how she got the job at E! in the first place: she was banging her married boss. Will she be able to pull that same move somewhere else?

According to her manager, Irving Azoff,Chelsea Handler plans to leave E! after finishing the nine months left on her contract forChelsea Lately, her talk show which has been surprisingly running for 8 years. Wow. Those five people who watch it must have been vocal about keeping it around.
Rumors point to the departure as a result of her dissatisfaction with E!. She told Howard Stern in March that E! is “a sad, sad place to live,” adding, “They don’t know what they’re doing. They have no ideas. It’s a failure.” Clearly, she’s wrong. E! obviously knows what they’re doing. They have a 10 year plan of milking the Kardashians dry. Diversification to them is just putting a Kardashian in another city.
Handler’s reps have been setting up meetings with Sony, Lionsgate and FX to see if anyone will let her have her own show. The meetings probably go something like, “Hey, I know you’re in there. I saw you turn off the light.”

| Chelsea Handler bangs black guys so she's not a racist, just like Brandi Glanville | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

In years to come, we will refer to this as The Brandi Glanville Defense. When a celebrity is called out for doing or saying or tweeting something blatantly racist, that celebrity declares that they are not racist because ? wait for it ? they?ve banged black guys. It?s the new ?I have black friends? defense. It?s the defense for the 21st century racist.
So, obviously, we?re still talking about Chelsea Handler?s racist tweets during the Oscars. She loves this, incidentally. She loves that we?re talking about her. She interprets our scorn as interest, like she?s mega-controversial for being so bold and unconventional. She?s pretty much a garden-variety racist, only she has a public platform and no one seems willing to call her out on her BS. Case in point: Chelsea tweeted all of that racist crap when she took over the HuffPo feed. HuffPo still has the tweets up. They are unashamed to associate with her.
Here?s another example. Chelsea appeared on Good Morning America yesterday and George Stephanopoulos asked her about the racist tweets. And when I say he asked her about the tweets, I mean he asked her about how people reacted to the tweets, because hack journalism.
Chelsea says:
?People are mad at me all the time. If was worried about that then I would be spending a lot of time online. I?d rather be a little more productive. I?m not racist. I date a lot of black people, so that would be a difficult thing to explain to them.?
I don?t get the ?If was worried about that then I would be spending a lot of time online. I?d rather be a little more productive? thing. Is she saying that it?s only bloggers who think she?s racist and she?s so busy and important and famous, she doesn?t have time to worry about us? Er? this current controversy started because she was online? live-tweeting the Oscars. To promote her book, which she is promoting online. Lord, she?s dumb.
As for the whole ?I can?t be a racist because I bang black guys? defense ? it?s not a defense, just like the ?I have black friends? thing isn?t a defense. Just because you know, befriend and sleep with black people, those associations don?t inoculate a person from racism. I mean, Phil Robertson knows some black people too. And he thinks they were just fine when they couldn?t vote and there were lynchings every so often.
PS? Yes, I noticed how she looks like a Botox-monster in that video too.

| Chelsea Handler: 'I don't know that I could handle my own child, especially a girl' | Added 11 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

|
There?s one thing that I don?t flat-out hate about Chelsea Handler (generous of me, I know): I don?t hate her when she?s talking honestly about how she doesn?t want children, or how being a wife and mother was never her goal. In that one instance, I find her refreshingly honest. Maybe it?s because it?s one of the few times I relate to her and agree with her. Chelsea did an interview with Amanda de Cadenet (I have yet to see an episode of The Conversation) and the conversation turned to babies and? again, I give Chelsea credit for not spouting the standard ?Oh, I want babies, soon!? crap. Chelsea?s not into babies.
Chelsea Handler has said it before, and now she’s saying it again: “I definitely don’t want to have kids.” The 38-year-old Chelsea Lately host explained her decision to not have children during the Apr. 27 episode of The Conversation With Amanda de Cadenet.
“I don’t think I’d be a great mother,” the New Jersey native said. “I don’t want to have a kid and have it raised by a nanny. I don’t have the time to raise a child. Childhood was heartbreaking enough for anybody. I don’t know that I could handle my own child, especially if I had a girl, going through what I went through growing up. Not that it was so traumatic, but in many ways, it was in your own way.”
Handler, the youngest of five children, also opened up about her long-distance relationship with wealthy hotelier Andre Balazs, her on-and-off love since the spring of 2011. “My boyfriend is as busy as I am, so we both make time. I think if you want to be in a relationship with someone, you both make it happen, and we do,” the My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands author said of the divorced father of two, 56. “We’re fortunate enough to be able to have the wherewithal and the resources to kind of meet each other all over the place.”
The comedienne, whose exes include rapper 50 cent and animal trainer Dave Salmoni, said she actually prefers having a bicoastal relationship. (Handler resides primarily in L.A., while Balazs lives in New York City.)
“It’s always fun. It’s always exciting,” Handler revealed. “He’s very romantic. He’s very good for me and I’m very good for him. He’s pretentious and I’m not, so I take him down a notch and he brings me up a notch.”
Though the pair have broken up twice, they’ve since learned how to better understand each other’s needs. “We had some troubles in the beginning because we were both fighting who the other person was. Everything you like about somebody you end up detesting about them. . . Finally, we both calmed down and then we were able to come together in a much different way,” Handler said. “But I’m grateful to be in an adult relationship because I always figured, ‘Oh, I’ll just have sex with a bunch of guys and have my career.’”
[From Us Weekly]
I still don?t understand the Andre Balazs thing. Maybe I never will. I mean, I understand what she sees in him ? he?s rich, he?s powerful, he?s incredibly well-connected and he provides her with so much legitimacy as a celebrity or whatever. But what does she do for him? That?s what I don?t understand. Anyway, here you go. My one relatively nice Chelsea Handler post. I guess I do one of these a year.

| Chelsea Handler & Andre Balazs did break up, so was he with Pippa Middleton? | Added 12 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

|
I know, it?s not like so many of you cared about this story to begin with, but I have an update on the whole ?Is Pippa Middleton?s ass of lies trying to steal Chelsea Handler?s boyfriend?? situation. The update is two-fold: one, Chelsea (or her people) confirmed to Page Six this morning that Chelsea and Andre Balazs are OVER, which means that when Andre and Pippa Middleton were spending all of that time together a few weeks ago, it was actually ON. Like, Pippa and Andre might have been hooking up or dating or something. Anyway, here?s Page Six?s Chelsea story. I rolled my eyes a few times:
Chelsea Handler ? who?s known for writing about her drunken sexual exploits in best sellers including ?My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands? ? will riff on the kinky ?Fifty Shades of Grey? phenomenon with her latest, which we hear is called ?50 Shades of Chartreuse: This Time It?s Personal.?
Sources tell Page Six the ?Chelsea Lately? host signed a seven-figure deal for the book with a title poking fun at the E L James trilogy, at the same time she?s upgrading her studio for her E! show by moving into Universal?s digs for the failed ?The Tonight Show With Conan O?Brien? experiment.
Handler?s currently single, we?re told, after splitting with high-flying hotelier Andr Balazs. But it?s unclear whether her new book will catalog their on/off relationship.
The tome?s scheduled to hit bookshelves in October 2013. Handler?s rep declined to comment on the deal with Grand Central Publishing.
Handler?s also written the boozy books ?Are You There Vodka? It?s Me, Chelsea? and ?Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang.? A watered-down TV series based on ?Vodka,? called ?Are You There, Chelsea?? was canceled in May. Handler said, ?I can?t just throw my name on something and hope everybody gets it.?
Meanwhile, Handler?s moving her ?Lately? studio to better and larger digs on the Universal lot, and will broadcast her first show from the revamped studio Oct. 15.
The new studio, part of a $25 million deal signed in November to extend ?Chelsea Lately? on E! until 2014, will hold about 250 audience members, up from 75 at the previous studio, and house an adjoining space to film other Handler projects.
While Handler handles business, Balazs was heavily on the prowl in New York City last week during Fashion Week. At the opening of Chez Andr, Andr Saraiva?s pop-up club in the Standard East Village, Balazs was spotted ?flirting with every girl in the room,? says a spy. ?He was dancing with all the women and lost his balance and fell into another girl, at one point, who had to prop him up.?
[From Page Six]
I?ve heard a lot of gossip about Chelsea and Andre?s on-and-off relationship over the past few years, and from what I can see, they were both utter messes when they together. And Chelsea really, really loved being Andre?s girlfriend, she loved the status and legitimacy it gave her. So? I?ve got to wonder what happened there. I?m sure it was something fascinating, no joke.
As for Chelsea?s book plans? whatever. I think it?s kind of gross and weird that this ?50 Shades? crap is ?inspiring? so many knockoffs and cross-promotional gear, and by ?parodying? the 50 Shades franchise, Chelsea just seems cheap, like she?s going for low-hanging fruit, you know? But what else would we expect from a 37-year-old (LOL) party girl?

Chelsea Handler covers the new issue of something called ?Marie Claire @ Work?. I guess the magazine is trying to differentiate between the ?normal? celebrity profile and the profile of a working woman, with a focus on her business stuff. I guess Chelsea is a good enough choice for that kind of profile ? she?s developed a lucrative brand for herself, and she has a devoted fanbase of women who seem to enjoy her. But? you know how I feel about her. I think she’s awful. So I found this whole Marie Claire piece to be too cute by half, especially when they approach her by saying that Chelsea attracts, ?smart, young, ambitious women hungry for a witty straight shooter who tells it like it is–minus Leno’s yuk-yuks, Letterman’s smugness, and Jon Stewart’s smarty-pants editorializing. Handler has made a lucrative career as the best friend you’re desperate to have- gorgeous but not intimidating, always game for a night out, and loyal to the death, as evidenced by her numerous on-the-record critiques of Angelina Jolie, bte noire of her good pal Jennifer Aniston.? Gross. False. Upsetting.
Handler likes to drink: “I went out with a guy who once told me I didn’t need to drink to make myself more fun to be around,” she joked. “I told him, ‘I’m drinking so that you’re more fun to be around.’”
On the cancellation of ?her ratings-challenged, critically panned NBC sitcom Are You There, Chelsea??: ?Obviously I care about anything I do, but this was more of a pain in the ass after a while. Creatively, it was a really good lesson, and I knew I was due for one? I can’t just throw my name on something and hope everybody gets it. Everything I’ve done has been really fortuitous, but you don’t learn a lot when everything’s easy all the time.”
On boyfriend Andre Balazs: ?I’m definitely worried about maintaining my relevance and not wanting to go too far out of bounds to accommodate someone else”
On Joan Rivers saying that Chelsea “made it on her back, f–king” then-head of E! Ted Harbert: ?I so didn’t, and I so don’t care about you asking about it?I would come home from work, and Ted would be like, ‘Do you want to watch your show?’ and I’d be like, ‘No, I just came from my show. That’s the last thing I’d want to do.’ That was the reason it didn’t work out, ultimately. I think.”
Her career: “I don’t like to be that aggressive or ambitious,” she says. “I know it doesn’t seem like that, but I don’t feel like, ‘Oh God, I’ve got to do this, I’ve got to do that.’ I have severe ADD, and I’m constantly looking to amuse myself.”
Cheslea ?is careful about alienating fans with gratuitous licensing deals?: No fragrances, she insists, and on the heels of This Means War, in which she costarred with buddy Reese Witherspoon, no more supporting roles.
She wants to tackle more serious topics on Chelsea Lately: “There was a period of time when I started getting antsy and was like, ‘Ugh, I can’t sit here and gossip anymore,’” she says. “I want to talk more about politics and human-interest stories, like when somebody shoots somebody else at a drive-through over Chicken McNuggets–stupid stuff like that.”
What she?ll do after her contract (which goes to 2014) is up: ?I’m not a network kind of girl ? There’s no long-term goal. I just know I’m on a contract for two years and in the interim I’m gonna do whatever I can to make that as fruitful as possible, and try and get as much success as I can for the people around me.”
[From Marie Claire]
I found Chelsea?s response to the question about Are You There, Chelsea? cancellation question very interesting. Her first response ?Obviously I care about anything I do, but this was more of a pain in the ass after a while? ? is fascinating. Is she saying that making her particular brand of humor fit into network television was a ?pain in the ass? or that dealing with the mountain of criticism was a pain in the ass? But the second part is better ? ?Creatively, it was a really good lesson, and I knew I was due for one? I can’t just throw my name on something and hope everybody gets it. Everything I’ve done has been really fortuitous, but you don’t learn a lot when everything’s easy all the time.? Yeah? because nobody ?got it? with that show, it was so awful. And I?m really pleased that Chelsea isn?t going to be doing any more movies. YAY!

These are photos from last night?s Time 100 event (Time Magazine?s party for their ?100 Most Influential People?). Chelsea Handler made the Time 100, remember? She?s ?influential?. And I think this is the first time Andre Balazs, her on-again hotelier boyfriend, has walked the red carpet with her for a significant event. So for Chelsea and Andre?s big public debut as a couple, couldn?t she have put a little more effort into her appearance? Chelsea didn?t even get her trashy roots done!
The theme of the rest of these photos is ?Ladies in White?. For some reason, a lot of women were wearing bridal styles at the Time 100 event. Here?s Georgina Chapman, in one of her own Marchesa designs. I didn?t even have to look that up! I know it?s Marchesa because it looks like a busted ice skater?s dress.
Several Sandra Lee photos were tagged ?Chelsea Handler?. Which is really depressing for Sandra Lee, because I think she?s a pretty woman who doesn?t look at all busted and ragged.
And here?s a wonderful palette cleanser for the Handler situation – Tilda Swinton, wearing what I suspect is a Haider Ackermann onesie. This is the most fabulous, most hardcore onesie you could ever dream of owning. TILDA!!!!!!!!!!!!

| Chelsea Handler hosts the Human Rights Campaign gala: bad choice? | Added 12 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

These are photos from last night?s Human Rights Campaign gala held in LA. Chelsea Handler was the hostess of the gala – for an organization that preaches tolerance and acceptance. FOR REAL? The Human Rights Campaign might want to rethink that one. Not only is Chelsea not the even close to the right ?face? of the HRC, this is what she wore. To a gala. Where she was the hostess. A beachy coverup dress and those biker boots. WTF? I sometimes feel like Chelsea is like the 50-something alcoholic mother of a teenager, and the mom is constantly trying to (drunkenly) seem younger, and “wear what the kids are wearing.” Also: for all of the Jolie-haters who constantly complain about The Vein – look at Chelsea?s forehead vein. That vein is trying to out-vein Angelina?s.
Also at the event: Joe Manganiello. It?s always nice to see a straight actor with a ?butch? image supporting the HRC. Joe?s also really tight with Matt Bomer. I think they went to school together… and now I’m thinking about what it would look like if Bomer and Manganiello were getting crazy on each other. HOT.
And here?s Charlize, fresh from WonderCon. She received the HRC?s Ally for Equality Award. I feel like Charlize wins a gay-rights award every other year – she?s a huge HRC and GLAAD supporter. As for her style in this black Acne dress – if Charlize hadn?t just adopted a baby, I would be suggesting that she?s pregnant. Seriously – this dress was made for pregnancy rumors. Maybe Fassbender?s the father. Or maybe Alexander Skarsgard. Or maybe BOTH!
