Olivia Wilde recently tweeted about an incident that so many parents can relate to. She wrote that her son, Otis, five, was having a meltdown at a restaurant. She had bags in her hands and had her two-year-old daughter, Daisy, with her and felt overwhelmed. Two people asked if they could help and she let them put the bags in her car and help put Daisy in her carseat which made all the difference. [via People]
The place was packed and we were very much on display. I was in way over my head. I stayed calm but I was kind of crumbling inside. In the midst of the madness, 2 strangers, a young man and woman, approached and asked if they could help.

There?s a lot of positive buzz about Booksmart, the coming of age movie which marks Olivia Wilde?s directorial debut. It has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and audiences love it too. Some reports are focusing on its poor performance at the box office, but it didn?t get much promotion by its distributor and it wasnt a bug budget film. I haven?t seen it in theaters yet but I plan to. The Guardian has an interview with Olivia which I found interesting and wanted to talk about. I especially liked what she said about how they?re not making the same kind of movies for teens that we had growing up. (Although she?s a decade younger than me.)
You?ve said you want Booksmart to be a generational anthem. What does that mean in 2019?
Well, the greatest generational anthems in my film-watching experience, specifically The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller?s Day Off, were a real celebration of the exciting independence of youth. There?s something punk rock about it: ?We?re in charge, our voices matter and we know more than the grown-ups.? And that represents this young generation to me now. They?re like: ?You?ve put us in a fucked-up political situation, the Earth is dying, there are maniacs in power, you?ve created this binary way of thinking about gender and sexuality, which we don?t accept. We?d actually like to shift this paradigm ? you?re done!?
There were a lot of high-school comedies in the 1980s and 90s, but fewer recently. Why did they stop getting made?
I think they became more patronising: it became about poking fun at the ineptitude of young boys in terms of sexuality. Think of American Pie: there?s a lot of truly funny performances, but it seemed to lose touch with the deeply emotional crises that you see in those John Hughes movies. Being young is the most painful and the most hilarious experience.
Your mother ran (unsuccessfully) for Congress. What was it like?
I?ve been interested in politics for a long time. I worked very hard for Obama in 2008 and 2012, but local politics, congressional races are unique. I?ve seen my mom do incredible things: she?s worked in war zones as a journalist, she?s spoken truth to power in different ways, she?s also just my kick-ass mom, but seeing her in this position was unbelievable. The energy it takes to run for office, I could never do it. It?s so vulnerable and it?s so exhausting because the campaign finance system in electoral politics is so corrupt that, in order to stay afloat as a candidate, you are constantly raising money. It?s really unfortunate, but there are bright spots on the horizon ? you see people such as AOC [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] who no one thought had a chance.
Who would you like to see as the Democratic nominee for 2020?
I don?t know yet. We have to keep our eye on Congress as well as the presidential election; we have to remember there are so many seats we have to maintain. If we lose Congress, we are so fucked! But there are so many Democratic candidates at this point that now we need to start debating and see who can survive. But I really like Elizabeth Warren.
[From The Guardian]
I didn?t get to vote for Olivia Wilde?s mom but I have friends in her district who did and expected her to win. Olivia and her fiance Jason Sudeikis campaigned for her and it must have been tough to see her lose. It definitely was for her potential constituents. As for her thoughts on young adult movies, while I loved the John Hughes films growing up, I cringe when I rewatch them. They are problematic, they are very male-centric and they do not hold up at all. I have higher hopes for Booksmart and given the reviews I think they?ll be met. I also think we?ll be seeing more of Wilde as a director, which I look forward to.

I?ve completely blanked on the fact that there?s a movie called Life Itself and it?s designed to be a weepy movie for women. It?s from the creator of This Is Us, which I?m still not watching because I refuse to be emotionally manipulated by this BS. Anyway, Life Itself is getting terrible reviews, so I don?t feel so bad about blanking on it. Olivia Wilde is one of the stars of the movie, and she still has to get out there and promote it, crappy reviews or not. Which is why she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week and spent the entire time talking about her family rather than the movie. As it turns out, Olivia revealed something I never knew: Jason Sudeikis can?t smell. He doesn?t have a sense of smell, apparently? It?s some kind of medical condition and my mind is blown.
Olivia Wilde?s fianc Jason Sudeikis was born with an odd condition ? but their 4-year-old son, Otis Alexander, knows how to fix the problem! The Life Itself actress, 34, opened up to Jimmy Kimmel on Monday night about the fact that the Horrible Bosses star, 43, can?t smell or taste anything.
?Apparently it took quite a while for him to realize it,? Wilde told the Jimmy Kimmel Live host. ?I had weirdly heard it from our mutual friends, and it was an awkward thing I brought up on our first date. I was like, ?I heard you don?t smell so great.? When our kids were born, he had a real Forrest Gump moment where he was like, ?Is he normal? Can he smell?? And Otis can smell, which is lucky for him. [Otis is] convinced he?s gonna diagnose the problem and fix it. So he?s like, ?Dad, there is a Lego up your nose. You just have to breathe out really hard.? He tries to coach him. He holds his face. He?s like ?I?m gonna get it. Don?t worry.? ?
?The good thing is he thinks I am an incredible chef because he can?t taste anything,? Wilde said. ?It?s a pretty crazy thing. But I guess if you?re gonna lose a sense ? New York in the summer time, you don?t want your sense of smell.? When Kimmel asked the one thing the House alum wishes Sudeikis could sniff, she swiftly responded, ?Sauting onions. Garlic and onions. The beginning of a pasta.?
[From People]
I can?t even imagine what it?s like to live without taste or smell, or to live with someone who can?t taste or smell! It must be both delightful and disastrous. To be someone or with someone who can?t taste when something is too garlicky or too overseasoned. To not be able to smell autumn, or the rain, or the smell of a good whiskey or a pineapple or ANYTHING? I guess if Jason has never experienced it, he doesn?t know what he?s missing. But still? it must affect both of their lives in deep ways.

Above is a photo of Olivia Wilde, 32, speaking at a Martin Luther King event last month. She has dark longish brown hair with highlights, but this is actually shorter than her hair was before. Around December, after the orange one was elected, Wilde cut her hair a couple of inches and captioned her Instagram #nomoremelaniahair. As Kaiser wrote at the time, a lot of women have been getting haircuts following the election and we’re expressing our rage in new shorter styles and different colors.
This time Wilde has gone even more dramatic, getting a bob and dyeing her hair blonde with dark roots. Here’s her new ‘do from the side:
Oh what's up, BLONDE LIFE ?

October 11th was the International Day of the Girl, as recognized by the United Nations. It was also the birthday of Olivia Wilde?s second child, a little girl! Olivia and her partner Jason Sudeikis welcomed their first child, Otis, was born in April 2014, which makes him two-and-half right now (time flies, right?). And on October 11th, 2016, Olivia welcomed Daisy Josephine Sudeikis.
The question? Do ?Daisy? and ?Otis? fit together as sibling-names? I feel like Olivia and Jason have a little bit of the Sarah Palin-flair, in that they don?t mind giving dog-appropriate names to human children. I always thought Palin named her kids like puppies, I?m just saying! That being said, I don?t mind this name in particular. Daisy feels pretty popular but it?s not hypersaturated like Madison or Isabella. And the ?Josephine? gives it some balance, some seriousness and weight. She?ll probably just go by Daisy, but there?s always a chance she could end up a Jo Sudeikis or Joey or JoJo Sudeikis. You never know. I also think that Olivia probably feels like it?s difficult to get a name that feels right with ?Sudeikis.? It?s a difficult last name.
Olivia was still riding the subway deep into her third trimester, even though people wouldn?t give up their seats for, as she said, ?a giant preggo.? She?s also been taking a lot about how she?s voting for Hillary Clinton and reproductive rights.
There goes the neighborhood. Daisy Josephine Sudeikis. Born, like a boss, on #internationaldayofthegirl. ??

Here are some photos of Olivia Wilde at TIFF almost a week ago. I was surprised when I saw these photos because I didn?t realize she was this far along in her second pregnancy. Olivia announced her pregnancy back in April, just as her son Otis Sudeikis was turning 2 years old. By my calculations, that means that?s probably? eight or nine months pregnant. Well into her third trimester, in any case, and really obviously and visibly, heavily pregnant. You would think that this would be the phase of pregnancy when the whole world would make way for a big ol? preggo lady. You would think that she would constantly get offers to sit down and take a load off, wherever she goes. You would be wrong. Apparently, when Olivia rides the subway, no one offers up their seat to the giant pregnant lady:
NBD, able-bodied ? riders who won't give your seat to a GIANT preggo. I'll just stand riiiiight next to your head and pray I go into labor.

Olivia Wilde recently shared some of her beauty secrets with People magazine and I can only hope if I follow them I will look as radiant as she does. Olivia used the interview to do a little shilling for Revlon, for which she is a spokesperson, but she does offer some pretty helpful tips. She says that Jason ?doesn?t love it? when she wears red lipstick to channel her inner Sophia Loren, but I?m sure he can look past that. It?s like a tiny scratch on a Bentley. Here are some highlights from the interview:
On men and makeup: ?All men are terrified of lipstick. But girls don?t get dressed up for guys; we get dressed up for girls. So I wear whatever I think looks best.?
On her beauty inspiration: ?I like to be bold on the red carpet, and the benefit of working with so many brilliant makeup artists is that I get to ask a lot of questions and say, ?okay so when I go out next week to that birthday party I am going to try my own version of this with my own tools.’?
On her day-to-day look: ?I don?t leave the house without a little foundation, concealer and mascara [on]. I think that for a lot of women it?s not about disguising yourself, it?s just about giving yourself a little bump in confidence.?
On the power of makeup: ?The older I get, the more I get to know what works best for me. Makeup is not about changing who you are, it?s about understanding your face and highlighting your best features.?
[From People]
I love Olivia, but I have to disagree on a few things. I did an informal poll of my Facebook friends and random Tinder connections and not one man told me he was ?terrified? of lipstick. Maybe Jason had some sort of traumatic experience with lipstick as a child. Also, the only woman I get dressed up for is myself. I have also been known to get dolled up to woo the opposite sex, so I think she may be barking up the wrong tree. She is right about using makeup to highlight your best features. She?s obviously a pro at that.
Sadly, it was announced on Wednesday that Olivia?s HBO series, Vinyl, was cancelled after only one season. The show, which followed the ups and (mostly) downs of a rock ?n? roll record label in the 1970s was produced by Martin Scorcese and Mick Jagger, and I thought it was pretty good. And, of course, there?s all kinds of unresolved storylines, damn it. I hope Mick?s son, James, who played a punk singer, shows up somewhere soon. He?s a hottie. I hope Olivia?s merkin stylist can get another gig somewhere as well.
Olivia took the news in stride, using Twitter to thank fans for their support. She tweeted, ?Thanks for all the kind words about Vinyl, my friends. We had a BLAST, and made something special. Party on.?

The CFDA Awards, short for Council of Fashion Designers of America, were held Monday in New York. You can see the list of winners here. Beyonce was honored as was Bowie, and there was a tribute to Bowie performed by Michael C. Hall (he starred in Bowie’s musical, “Lazarus”), with Tilda Swinton there to accept on Bowie’s behalf, which was fitting. There were a lot of models, a few celebrities and many fashion people there.
Like the Met Gala, the celebrities posed with the designers they were wearing, hence Olivia Wilde here with Rosie Assoulin. Assoulin looks like she’s wearing sparkly pajamas with wedges, but I like the fact that she put a very pregnant lady in a cutout dress, there’s something inspired about that. The cutouts look unfinished though, they have little ties around them and for some reason the sleeves have thumb holes. The sweater dress doesn’t look polished with the way it gathers around the cutouts. If someone put me in sparkly blue eyeshadow and then rimmed my eyes all over with black liner I would wipe it off and do it myself, but she still looks pretty somehow. I really like her mosaic jewelry, that’s unique and goes well with this dress. Olivia announced her pregnancy in April, meaning she should be about five or six months along by now but I bet she’s due sometime this summer.
America Ferrera was in Kate Spade and this is just a snooze of a gown. It’s got a line of rectangular brooches across the collar and waistline, her jewelry mirrors the embellishments on the gown down to the color and it’s all too conservative and formulaic. Spade’s fashion is preppy but can be whimsical so this is disappointing.
Olivia Culpo was also in Kate Spade, in a jacket and short feather skirt. I like how daring this combo is but I’d like to see a pop of color somewhere. Still, this is fun.
Here’s Selma Blair and Alicia Silverstone, both in Christian Siriano. Selma looks kind of wacky in that one sleeve tuxedo suit with the asymmetric vest train. She’s almost owning that look, I can’t quite decide. Alicia looks amazing in that red gown with the twisted straps and a high leg slit. The bodice fits her like a dream. She’s 39 and looks about 10 years younger. Whenever I see Alicia Silverstone or Heather Graham I’m tempted to go vegan.
