I watched Mike Flanagan?s The Fall of the House of Usher on Netflix last week and really liked it. It was my first Flanagan show. If you haven?t watched Usher yet, it takes its name and lead characters from the Edgar Allan Poe short story and incorporates many of his other storylines and characters from his stories and poems to make one big Poe Universe. Flanagan packs a lot of Easter eggs into those eight episodes. The show follows the Usher family?s rise and downfall through two different timelines, as told by patriarch Roderick. It?s graphic, but compelling and really well-acted.
I know that Flanagan works with a lot of the same actors over and over again, just like Ryan Murphy does. His wife, Kate Siegel, is one of those actors. In Usher,? she plays public relations guru Camille, who also happens to be one of Roderick?s daughters. Camille is smart, ruthless, and a bitch. Turns out, the inspiration for Camille comes from an unlikely source: Pixar?s The Incredibles!
The Fall of the House of Usher star Kate Siegel has revealed the unlikely source of inspiration behind her character Camille LEspanaye. In a video clip shared to Twitter by Mike Flanagan Source, Siegel admits that her character was based on the duplicitous character Mirage from Pixar?s The Incredibles. Initially suggesting that when she was a young girl she thought Mirage ?was the most beautiful woman I could imagine?, she went on to jokingly admit that once audiences see the resemblance between the two characters, it can?t be unseen.
?Camille is entirely based on a character named Mirage from The Incredibles. When I was a little girl, she was like my Jessica Rabbit. Like I thought she was the most beautiful woman I could imagine. She is the one that tricks Mr. Incredible into coming and being kidnapped. Once you?ve seen it, you can?t unsee it. So sorry to spoil all of your childhood dreams, but Camille is just Mirage.?
While Siegel is quick to credit the animated femme fatale who served as the assistant to Syndrome in The Incredibles for her character?s basis, creator Flanagan also mined the depths of Edgar Allan Poe?s massive catalog of written works to help give the Usher character form. Where Siegel?s Camille may owe her own trademark silver hair and cool demeanor to Mirage, the original character itself is drawn from Poe?s 1841 short story The Murders in the Rue Morgue.
[From Screenrant]
I think it?s hilarious that Siegel based Camille on a Pixar character, but hey, we can?t help where we get inspiration from! When the moment strikes, you gotta go where it?s going to take you. It?s been a few years since I?ve seen The Incredibles, so I watched a compilation of her best moments on YouTube and I can see how Siegel drew her inspiration from Mirage. I never would have guessed it, though, even if you had given me a multiple choice.
I thought the entire cast did a great job with such complicated, tragic, and for some, evil characters. Bruce Greenwood is particularly outstanding as Roderick, despite taking over for Frank Langella mid-way through filming (#lemon). Willa Fitzgerald is mesmerizing as young Madeline and Carla Gugino kills it (pun intended) as Verna, which is an anagram for Raven. I?m definitely going to check out more of Flangan?s shows. I?ve heard good things about Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House, so I guess I?ll start with those.

| Carla Gugino: Robert Rodriguez had me play a mother to preteens when I was 28 | Added 3 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

This interview with Carla Gugino has been out for a couple of weeks but I just saw it covered on Just Jared and wanted to talk about it. Carla, 49, is promoting Gunpowder Milkshake, also with Angela Bassett, Lena Headey and Michelle Yeoh. I tried watching it and it was too stylized for me so I didnt finish it. I know Carla from The Haunting of Hill House and the excellent Geralds Game. She was also in the Spy Kids movies, which started 20 years ago and were directed by Robert Rodriguez. Carla was just 28 when she played the mother to children who were 10 and 12. When she asked Rodriguez about it, he said it was fine because his mom had ten kids.
She got injured on her day off earlier this year
?I went on this amazing hike and I was coming down a hill and I broke my wrist really badly,? Gugino tells me from her home in New York City. ?I broke all the bones all the way across and then had a bunch of complications because I had to have a bonesetter on. It made me look like RoboCop, but it was a massive metal thing that was literally drilled into my bones that I had to have on for seven weeks. Then it didn?t heal because the bone was pulled too far apart, so I had to have a second surgery seven weeks ago. I now am bionic.?
She was playing a mom to preteens when she was 28
This year marks the 20th anniversary of ?Spy Kids,? the first film in Robert Rodriguez?s four-movie family-friendly franchise. Gugino and Antonio Banderas played retired spies raising their kids (Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara) when they?d asked to go on another mission. ?What?s particularly strange about the ?Spy Kids? of it all is I was so young when I did it,? Gugino says. ?I was at least ten years too young for the role because I was supposed to have been a spy for ten years, then had two children who were now 10 and 12. I was 28 years old. But Robert kind of said, ?My mom had ten kids and if we play this right, no one will ever question it.? I think it only hurt me a little because people did think I was older than I was for a period of time. But I would never have given up that experience. It was such an extraordinary time. It was just this little tiny movie we made alone in Austin and it became a phenomenon that continues.?
Gugino doesn?t think a fifth movie will be made anytime soon. ?You know, I think Robert has moved on. I actually just saw him recently and we always want to collaborate. I think he did four of them and that was sort of right,? she says.

I got the impression that Carla wanted to call out her old director but was trying to be gracious and diplomatic about it. It makes sense that his mom had kids young so he wouldnt think it was a big deal. She sounds like it bothered her at first but she shrugged it off and realized its part of the business. Women are asked to play grandmothers at 40 and love interests to men 20 years older and more. Thats just the consequence of having men run everything I guess, and hopefully its changing. Also, her story about breaking her wrist while hiking was a cautionary tale for me. Im around her age and also love hiking. One of my friends broke her ankle hiking and had to have surgery. It just takes one wrong move or a loose stone. Then again Brooke Shields broke her leg at the gym so we might as well do what we love.

| Carla Gugino's Hippie Mom Made Her Live in a Teepee | Added 12 years ago | Source: The Blemish |

When Carla Gugino was a kid, she had a “horrific kidney operation.” I’m not exactly sure what that means but her mom took her recovery into her own hands and made her live in a teepee in Northern California.
“I lived in a teepee with my mum and we lived next to these gold prospectors, who were very good friends of ours…
“It was amazing. We bathed in the river, we went into town once a week to get groceries and everything like that. We had two little twin beds and a fire pit. I was recovering from a really bad kidney operation as a very young kid and she wanted to take me into nature.
“It was kind of the most amazing thing that my mom could have done. It was pretty wild.” StarPulse
She didn’t say how long she was there for but I’d be pretty pissed having to live out there. Especially when those bears start stealing my picnic baskets. That’s a thing, right? I saw a documentary on it called Yogi…. something.

Carla Gugino, who looks even more boobtastic and attractive in real life, is in the October issue of Esquire. Topless. And bottomless. I’m not exactly sure what she’s promoting but I hope it’s for a new celebrity campaign called “Show Me Your Tits.”

| Carla Gugino's Georges Chakra dress: cute or budget' | Added 14 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

What?s the general opinion on Carla Gugino? I think she?s an extremely talented actress who never really got her breakout role, and that?s sad. I also think she?s very, very pretty, and I love that she isn?t messing with her face. She?s 39 years old, and she looks like a beautiful woman in her 30s. It?s refreshing. But as much as I like Carla, I do not love this dress. It?s a Georges Chakra Couture dress, and she wore it to last night?s premiere of Faster, that dumb-looking action film starring The Rock. The dress looks budget - but the hair and makeup look really good. Eh. It?s a wash.
Guess who else is in the movie? Billy Bob Thornton. And his new face and his new hair. He looks? not good. CB was going to devote a whole post about Billy Bob?s budget weave/lacefront and his facelift, but thankfully, she decided against it. The Daily Mail has more on the alleged facelift - which I don?t really see. I think he might have had Botox, and maybe some kind of neck lift, maybe. But his face looks? whatever. It?s the wig/plugs situation that is really bothering me. Oh, and whatever the hell that crap is on his chin.
Here?s a shot of the whole cast. The guy on the far left is Oliver Jackson-Cohen. Doesn?t he look like a budget Jake Gyllenhaal? Weird.

| S.S. Carla Gugino is a Sensualist | Added 15 years ago | Source: Yeeeah |

Carla Gugino is in the March ‘09 issue of Women’s Health Magazine. In the interview, she talks about a lot of boring crap like vitamins and embracing opportunity, but she also says she’s a sensualist and that she sees no reason to marry her boyfriend of 12 years because she likes that there’s nothing holding them but their desire to be together. Oh, and there’s also this:
Flipping through the movie previews on an airplane recently, she was amused to see that “in all the American movies, something is blowing up, while in the European ones are people having sex. Here you can see a nipple blown off, but you can’t see a woman walking to the bathroom after sex. It’s weird, because to me, sexuality is a big part of who we are as humans, the way we connect.”
Carla Gugino has been awesome and hot as hell ever since the spectacularly stupid Son in Law nearly 16 years ago. She’s also playing Silk Spectre in the upcoming Watchmen, so it appears she has no intention of ceasing either the hot or the awesome.
