When I think of Jennifer Lopez’s sense of style, the image isn’t really a negative one. In my mind, JLo is a risk taker, and she isn’t afraid to wear body-conscious ensembles that are fierce and flamboyant while (usually) managing to flatter her figure. Make no mistake, Jennifer possesses a fantastic body, and she must work awfully hard to maintain it, but it must also be a challenge to tailor clothing to her assets that probably aren’t easily flattered by off-the-rack items. Whatever the case, I certainly do not think of Jennifer in terms of classic fashion (except for her recent wrinkly turn in Christian Dior on the Walk of Fame), but she seems to think that descriptor fits her. In fact, JLo insists that her style is very obviously a blend of Jackie O, Ava Gardner, and vintage, 1980s Madonna. Now I can sort of see the latter, but as far as Jackie and Ava are concerned? Bitch, please:

The 43-year-old singer – who has her own fashion range for Kohl’s – revealed she takes inspiration from the three very different style icons.
She said: “If you mix Jackie O with Madonna in the ’80s and Ava Gardner, that would be kind of like my style.”
Like Madonna, 54, Jennifer is known for her provocative stage outfits, but she is regularly commended for her red carpet style – much like former US First Lady, Jackie, and Old Hollywood actress, Ava, were.
No matter what she wears, the singer-and-actress insists it’s important to carry every outfit off with confidence.
She explained: “You just have to decide what you feel most confident in, because confidence is what makes people sexy. You have to be you but don’t get stuck.”

Okay, Jennifer has a point about carrying her various fashion forays off with confidence. She always wears her outfits — they do not wear her at all. But I still unavoidably laugh at JLo thinking people will readily tie her fashion sense to Jackie O and Ava Gardner. She seems to think that she can just put that out there, and eventually people will believe it, which is ridiculous … especially when Jennifer’s most important accessory of the past couple years has been a young piece named Casper Smart. Madonna would totally go (and has gone) there though.

A Human Rights Watch report has called Turkmenistan “one of the world’s most repressive” regimes. Internet traffic is monitored and reporters being jailed is the norm. Says HRW, “Media and religious freedoms are subject to draconian restrictions, and human rights defenders and other activists face the constant threat of government reprisal. The authorities continue to use imprisonment as a tool for political retaliation and to restrict peoples’ right to travel freely.”
So it’s no surprise that when Turkmenistan leaderGurbanguly Berdymukhamedov celebrated his 56th birthday on Sunday, it was with a special performance from Jennifer Lopez. How else was she going to get people to clap for her if not through fear and intimidation.
Reports say Lopez was paid $1 million plus expenses for the performance. She dressed in a traditional Turkmen dress to sing Happy Birthday to the president and performed a few of her other hits. Thus instilling more sadness into this country than Gurbanguly ever could.
Lopez’s publicist says the event was vetted by staff and had they known of any human rights issues, they would not have attended. Her publicist also told The AP that the event was hosted by the China National Petroleum Corp. and wasn’t a political event. That totally explains why she sang happy birthday to the Turkmenistan leader.

Jennifer Lopez is at it again with her one-off gigs (not shown in these photos, which were taken in London last month) in former Soviet republics. This time, she earned $1.4 million on Saturday evening by performing at a birthday celebration for the president of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov. Berdymukhamedov presides over what Global Human Rights Watch describes as “one of the world’s most repressive countries.” In Turkmenistan, Internet use is severely restricted (with social media being completely outlawed), and all electronic and television communication is monitored. In addition, Turkmenistan does not allow freedom of thought or religion, homosexuality is punishable by law, and the authorities have been known to demolish homes and forcibly evict residents without any form of compensation.
Naturally, JLo claims that she knew nothing of the sort, and her publicist is insisting that she’d never have performed in Turkmenistan if she’d have known anything at all about the country’s human rights history. This situation is much like Hilary Swank getting $1.5 million for the Chechen dictator’s birthday party wherein she gushed about how Ramzan Kadyrov is such a wonderful leader and does so much for his people. Celebrities and their teams have access to the Internet, right? It’s like they don’t know how to Google anything (except themselves), and JLo looks pretty ridiculous right now:
The US pop star Jennifer Lopezhas added to her long history of performing for unsavoury characters with a birthday concert for the president of Turkmenistan — a man accused of committing widespread human rights abuses while ruling over the hermit nation.
Human rights activists criticised the star, also known as JLo, for singing at the flashy southern resort of Avaza on Saturday night to mark the 56th birthday of Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, attended by a select group of officials, diplomats and executives.
With a shout of “Turkmenistan!”, Lopez took to the stage to sing and dance her way through her biggest hits. At the end, she changed from a skimpy white dress into a long, traditional Turkmen outfit to sing Happy Birthday, Mr President. “It was our pleasure,” Lopez said from the stage. “And we wish you the very happiest birthday.”
Berdymukhamedov presides over a personality cult in the oil and gas-rich central Asian nation and brooks no dissent. Human Rights Watch calls Turkmenistan “one of the world’s most repressive countries.” Lopez is believed to be the first major star to visit and perform in Turkmenistan, a nation whose people live in poverty and are allowed little contact with the outside world.
Lopez’s entourage appeared unaware they were heading to a country where the internet is tightly controlled. Access to social media and websites run by independent media and human rights groups is banned. “I wonder where all my Turkmenistan followers are!? Hit me up!” tweeted her choreographer JR Taylor. The tweet was later deleted as reports of Lopez’s controversial performance began to spread.
Lopez’s publicist released a statement on Sunday saying that had the singer been aware of the country’s human rights issues, she would not have performed there. The statement said she was invited to perform for CNPC and “graciously obliged” their last-minute request to sing a birthday tune for Berdymukhamedov.
Lopez has also performed at the wedding of an Uzbek businessman in Ukraine, reportedly for $1m, as well as for the Azeri oligarch Telman Ismailov, reportedly for $1.4m.
Before two performances in Russia last year, Lopez declined to discuss the country’s human rights situation with fans during a phone-in. In response to a question about the jailed punk band Pussy Riot, she said: “I don’t like to talk politics, to be quite honest.”

LOL at JLo’s choreographer asking where all his Turkmenistan tweeps are, and double LOL at the deletion of said tweet. One would think that celebrities would require their teams to research any and all important matters of human rights record whenever visiting an unfamiliar foreign country. This should just be a part of the job, right? Of course, I’m not excusing JLo at all for not bothering to at least visit the main Wikipedia page for any unfamiliar country she visits. It seems as though each day a new celebrity is under fire for their actions, and now Jennifer Lopez is the latest to receive backlash for a performance she gave in Turkmenistan on Saturday (June 29).
JLo was on hand for the country?s leader Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov?s birthday celebration, where she did a set of her hits before singing ?Happy Birthday? to the man who is considered to be one of the most oppressive leaders in the world by Human Rights Watch.
A spokesperson for Ms. Lopez issued a statement saying that Jennifer never would have agreed to sing at the event had she known about Berdymukhamedov?s history of human rights violations.

?Jennifer Lopez and several other artists were invited and performed at a private corporate event for the China National Petroleum Corporation that was presented to their local executives in Turkmenistan.
This was not a government sponsored event or political in nature. The event was vetted by her representatives, had there been knowledge of human right issues of any kind, Jennifer would not have attended.
The China National Petroleum Corporation made a last minute ?birthday greeting? request prior to Jennifer taking the stage. This was not stipulated in her contract but she graciously obliged the China National Petroleum Corporation request.?

Taking care of her domestic duties, Jennifer Lopez did a little grocery shopping in Calabasas, California on Sunday afternoon (June 23).
Joined by her kiddos Max and Emme, the ?On the Floor? songstress put her hair up in a bun and headed back to her mommy mini-van after collecting plenty of healthy foods.
On Thursday (June 20) Jennifer was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and she couldn?t help but get emotional during the occasion.
Lopez told the crowd, ?I really am overwhelmed. This all feels, I don?t know, kind of surreal, but so real. It?s awesome.?
She continued, "I love you, thank you so much for going on this journey with me. This landmark moment inspires me to work harder and dream bigger for all that is the future. I hope you feel as I do that it was all worth it, and I hope that I have touched your hearts even in a small way."

Jennifer Lopez wore a Christian Dior Pre-Fall 2013 dress with a rise-and-fall hemline to the unveiling of her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today. A lighter, strappier sandal or peep-toe would have worked a lot better than those clunky Brian Atwood ankle-strap pumps she’s wearing, but I love the dress. However, I don’t love it at two o’clock on a Thursday on Hollywood Boulevard. It’s completely inappropriate for the event. She looks ridiculous. Not to mention in desperate need of a hand-held steamer. It would seem couture ball gowns aren’t meant to be worn while lying on a sidewalk.

Making an impact in both the acting and music world, Jennifer Lopez was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday (June 20).
The "Live It Up" singer surrounded herself with family and her beau, Casper Smart, in a white sleeveless top and billowy peach skirt as she posed with her star.
Stoked for the award, the 43-year-old talent tweeted, "I wouldn't be where I am today w/o all of YOU and your infinite love & dedication. So excited for all of you to share this day with me!!! :)"
Nabbing the 2500th star, later J-Lo added, "The road that led to this day is paved with hard work, happiness & your amazing support! Excited to see u soon!!"

Ali Larter did a great summer take on the smoky eye at the Butterfly Ball earlier this week, going with a deep purple shadow instead of the traditional dark brown or gray. Does it seem like it’s been over two-and-a-half years since the dramatic rescue of the 33 Chilean miners from a San Jose mine after they were trapped for 69 days? Time really does fly, and I still freshly recall watching the live feed of all of the miners emerging, one at a time, from the bowels of the Earth to feel fresh air on their faces and find themselves ensconced within the arms of Chilean President Sebastian Pinera. From the very beginning of the end of the day-long rescue, there have been buzzings of this tale being brought to life on the big screen. Now that day has arrived (or at least, the pre-production phase is happening), and Jennifer Lopez has been tapped as part of the ensemble cast.
Last week, Lopez revealed that she was circling a small indie flick, and now it’s emerged that she has signed on to appear in The 33, which will tell the (supposedly) true story of what happened during the more than two months that these miners were trapped. What role will JLo play in the movie? IMDb provides no clues, but it can’t be a huge role. Maybe she plays one of the miners’ wives … or maybe one of the mistresses. There was also a nurse who spoke to many of the miners while they were trapped, and she said she got hit on a lot. That seems like a decent role for JLo, but I question whether she has the gravitas to treat this subject matter with dignity. Here’s a bit of good news though — Antonio Banderas is starring in the movie:
Jennifer Lopez has signed on to join Antonio Banderas in the Chilean miner film The 33.
Mike Medavoy is producing the drama, based on the true story of the 33 Chilean miners who were rescued after being trapped for 69 days in 2010.
The film will mark Lopez’s first big-screen role since starring opposite Jason Statham in this year’s action-thriller Parker.
Martin Sheen and Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro also have boarded the ensemble film, which was presented to foreign buyers at last month?s Cannes Film Festival. Good Universe is handling international sales.
Patricia Riggen (La Misma Luna) is directing from a screenplay written by Mikko Alanne and Jose Rivera, with production scheduled to begin in the fall in Chile.
In 2011, Medavoy nabbed the rights to the 33 miners, whose remarkable rescue from the San Jose Mine garnered headlines worldwide. The men were trapped half a mile beneath the Earth?s surface. Banderas is playing the role of Mario Sepulveda, the charismatic miner nicknamed “Super Mario.” Sheen will play a miner’s father, while Santoro is tackling the role of a trapped miner.

Mmm, Rodrigo Santoro. Dude does have a nice booty (as did Antonio in his Original Sin days), and this film will surely have plenty of eye candy because you know they’ll handsome-up the miners a great deal, but I still can’t get over the casting of Jennifer Lopez in this movie. Surely, there are plenty of other Latina actresses (albeit unknown ones) with a lot more acting cred than JLo, but it could’ve been worse … say, if Eva Mendes were cast. Still, it really sounds like JLo signed onto this film to try and rebuild her acting career, which hasn’t been worth anything more than cheesy romcoms since the days of U Turn and Out of Sight. I wish her luck, but JLo would be better off releasing mediocture dance club tunes than attempting to be a “serious” actress on the backs of these miners.
