Emma Thompson shades actors who think they are 'above' promoting their work
Just know that I almost made this into a ?Who would you rather?? post between Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson. But the truth is, I would totally bang Emma. Emma is one of my favorite people in the world. Emma and Pierce were at TIFF to promote their new film, The Love Punch. I don?t know much about the movie other than they play ?a divorced couple undertaking a crime caper to right financial wrongs done to them in their retirement fund.? Sounds entertaining. Am I the only one who kind of wishes Emma would do more costume dramas? She?s really great in costume dramas. Sigh. LOVE HER. Anyway, Emma was in full movie-shilling mode at TIFF, because she believes that actors should always promote the hell out of their movies. She explained her reasoning to The Telegraph:

Actress Emma Thompson has given a younger generation a masterclass in selling their films, as she claims some of the new generation are ?a bit snobby? about putting in the hard work of publicity. Thompson, who appeared at the premiere of The Love Punch at the Toronto Film Festival last night, said she believed actors ought to ?bang the drum? for their own films and encourage audiences to pay to see them.

Saying some younger actors nowadays felt they are ?above this?, she went on to give a masterclass in larking about for the camera. Posing happily with fans, the 54-year-old actress adopted a range of outlandish poses as she signed autographs and gave interviews. At one point, she was photographed swigging from what appeared to be a Grey Goose vodka bottle along with co-star Piers Brosnan. The good-natured actress went on to dance her way down the red carpet before appearing at a press conference to share the secret of her success.

When asked why she felt so comfortable in front of the camera, Thompson told an audience she believed the relationship between actors and the press was ?important”. Saying she believed some young actors are ?a bit snobby about doing press? and thought they were ?above it?, she advocated her peers to publicly get behind their own films.

She added she would always tell young actors to imagine their Hollywood blockbuster was their first performance at the Edinburgh festival.

?You go up the Royal Mile with a drum and you bang that drum and you say, ?I?m in this show,? she said. ?It?s really good, come and see it.? That?s what you do. And if you don?t do that, no one will come and see your show because there are a million shows and there are a lot of people who are better than you. So you better get out on that street with that drum.?

She added: ?Explain why you love your show. Say why you think it?s good. Be behind it . . . And if you can’t be behind it,. don’t do work you don’t believe in. This is a job. Make it fun. Make it fun for other people, make it fun for yourself.? She added she felt “passionate” and “very strongly” about the issue.

[From The Telegraph]

She SO right. I get so tired of reading celebrity interviews where actors just seem so grumpy promoting their work. Granted, we the public now expect actors to give more of their private lives away to promote their movies, but there IS a way to balance the personal issues with the movie promotion. Look at Channing Tatum, for the love of God. Emma also told the Toronto Sun that she loved her movie because it had a happy ending:

“It was so much fun? I’m fascinated by the fact that, at the moment, we don’t seem to make films that are designed to make us happy from the beginning to the end,” Thompson said.

She cited the TIFF line-up, with “lots of very, very dark films,” as an example of the trend. “We always have to go on some journey or other,” Thompson continued. “In the ‘olden days’ we didn’t have to do that. Sometimes actors were required to entertain and make people happy for the sake of that. And it’s something that we’ve slightly lost.”

Thompson feels slightly guilty that she got paid to co-star with her friend Brosnan in The Love Punch, which was filmed entirely in France. “It was the best summer ever for us,” Thompson enthused.

The locations included Coye-la-Foret in Oise north of Paris. Coincidentally, part of the 1957 Hollywood movie Funny Face, starring Audrey Hepburn, was also filmed in Oise. In another coincidence, [director] Hopkins happened to compare Thompson’s charming comedy chops to that of the late but legendary Hepburn. That, in turn led to a Thompson quips: “I could probably fit her inside one of my bra cups,” she said of the waif-like Hepburn.

One thing Hepburn always needed was on-screen chemistry with co-stars. For Thompson in The Love Punch, that chemistry was instant with Brosnan. It helps, of course, that he had been eager for years to work with her.

“I absolutely adore Emma,” Brosnan said Thursday. “She makes me feel happy and she makes me feel like a great actor in her presence. She is so generous as a woman, as an actor, and she just bedazzles!”

Do not, however, mention the word “retirement” to either actor in real life. On Thursday — with The Love Punch amusing audiences at TIFF — Thompson and Brosnan told a festival press conference that neither has plans for an end to acting — ever.

“Retirement?” Thompson said. “I can’t afford to retire. It’s like asking a painter to stop painting. Why would you? So I would never dream of retiring. Look at Judi Dench. Judi is so brilliant and keeps working and she’s blind, actually. She’s extraordinary. She wouldn’t dreaming of retiring. It’s not in our genes.”

Brosnan, now 60 and almost a decade past playing James Bond, confirmed that has no plans to give up his career, either.

“I never think about it myself. What would I do? I’ve been an actor so many years and, God willing, I’ll continue to be an actor for years to come.”

That does not mean that things will always stay the same, however. Especially for Thompson, who threw the media a curve ball. While she usually plays sympathetic characters, that needs to stop, she said.

“I’d like to play a really bad person. Really evil! And I’d like to be in an action movie one day. You know, get really ripped and (put on) some tattoos. I’m not kidding, actually. I really would like to do that. Possibly, it’s a mid-life crisis. I don’t know.”

[From Toronto Sun]

God, I love them both. But does anyone else think that they wasted money making this movie when really they just should have made a documentary about Emma and Pierce hanging out in France for a summer? I would watch that.

Emma Thompson & her mum received honorary doctorates in Scotland: adorable?
I?m sure many of you won?t care about this, but these photos just make me happy. Emma Thompson and her mother, Phyllida Law, were both given honorary doctorates in drama from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow yesterday. Phyllida is beautiful, isn?t she? And Emma too. You can take all of the Kardashians, Bosworths, et al and just leave Emma for me. Emma is one of my favorite people in the world. She?s funny and talented and cool, and her graduate garb is lovely. Unfortunately, Emma?s new honorary doctorate just means that she feels like a fraud:

Emma Thompson has admited feeling like a fraud as she collected an honorary degree in Glasgow alongside her mother Phyllida Law. She said her son quizzed her on how many essays she had actually written for the degree and joked she will now demand to be addressed as doctor.

The acting duo were awarded honorary doctorates in drama from Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) in Glasgow and later posed for photos in their graduation robes and signed autographs for fans. Nanny McPhee star Thompson won an Oscar for her lead role in 1992?s Howards End and a second Academy Award in 1996 for best adapted screenplay for Sense And Sensibility.

The pair have starred in several films together, including The Winter Guest, but sharing a stage at the RCS graduation topped the bill.

Thompson said: “We’ve not received anything like this before and we both feel slightly fraudulent because when I told my son he asked ‘how many essays did you have to [write] to get that?’ So we feel really lucky that we now get to put ‘doctor’ in front of our names and pretend we’re important. We’ve both had so much work as actors and are still working so to get a degree for it is great. I suppose in a sense it’s a reward for hanging in there. So many actors fall by the wayside so maybe this is recognition because we’re still going.?

Law joked: “It’s certainly not for our looks. It’s a dreadful mistake to be born exquisitely beautiful because it wears off by 28. Thankfully we didn’t need to worry about that.”

Law, who was born in Glasgow and was married to actor Eric Thompson from 1957 until his death in 1982, has appeared in many documentaries and interviews concerning her late husband’s narration on The Magic Roundabout and was in the original London cast of La Cage Aux Folles at London Palladium. The 81-year-old will receive a second degree when she becomes honorary doctor of letters from Glasgow Caledonian University later in the week.

“It’s great fun to be able to do this together, much better than collecting it on your own. And to get it in Glasgow is great,” Law said. “It’s quite silly that I’m getting another one but it means I’ll have two and Emma will be in the audience this time to see me.”

Thompson is married to Royal Conservatoire alumnus Greg Wise and said she is delighted to keep up the family tradition, even if her husband is not.

“Greg graduated from here in the 80s or 90s and he’s fit to be dead and spitting feathers at home because he had to do so much work and exams to get his degree and we just had to turn up to become doctors.”

The honours for the mother and daughter see them join the likes of singer Annie Lennox, comedian Billy Connolly and actor Tilda Swinton, who have all received honorary doctorates from the Conservatoire, previously the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Also receiving honorary doctorates were opera singer Patricia MacMahon and Jenny Sealy, a producer for the London 2012 Paralympics opening ceremony.

[From The Telegraph]

Emma is so English! That interview was a study in how not to take yourself too seriously, which should be make the list of ?Very British Problems?. Anyway, I always forget that Emma?s husband Greg Wise is so Scotland-friendly. I believe he?s part Scottish, he went to school in Scotland, and when he and Emma married, he wore a traditional kilt. Sigh? I love them. I love Emma most of all.

PS? You better comment on this post if you want more stories about Emma rather than the Kardashians!

Emma Thompson: 'Children' instinctively know that life is full of danger'

Emma Thompson: 'Children' instinctively know that life is full of danger'
Holla if you love some Emma Thompson! God, I love her so much. She?s one of my heroes, no joke. Smart, funny, interesting, a humanitarian, a writer and actress, all of that and she?s in a solid marriage (with Greg Wise, who is HOT). Plus, she just looks fantastic. She?s 53 years old, she loves a glass of wine and LOOK AT HER SKIN!! She has beautiful skin, and she?s not Botox-ing or filler-ing or anything. I love her.

These photos are from outside the ITV studios, where Emma was making an appearance on a UK show. I got excited for a second because I thought she might have a new movie coming out, but it seems that her latest project is something very, very different. She was contacted by a publisher to write a new Peter Rabbit/Beatrix Potter story. Here?s more:

In the summer of 2010, the Oscar-winning actress and writer Emma Thompson received an intriguing package in the post. Inside was a small cardboard box with a half-eaten radish leaf and a letter from Peter Rabbit. The letter said Thompson?s ?certain mischievous twinkle? in her eye made her the perfect person to write another adventure for the rabbit ? a sequel to Beatrix Potter?s beloved children?s story.

?It was such a witty invitation,? Thompson tells me, ?and it was very clever because in a sense I was completely tricked.? She laughs in that familiar warm and spontaneous way. If Frederick Warne,? ? the publisher of the Peter Rabbit stories ? ?had sent some official letter I would have said don?t be ridiculous, I can?t think of anything I want to do less than step into the footsteps of a genius like Potter.? But the publisher?s sweetly cunning ploy worked, and next week sees the publication of The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit by Emma Thompson, published for the 110th anniversary of the book?s original publication.

The story has a nice symmetry with the way in which Beatrix Potter first created her animal stories. In September 1893 Potter heard that Noel Moore, the young son of her ex-governess, was unwell. To cheer him up she sent him a letter with the story of Peter Rabbit who, unlike his goody-goody siblings Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail, disobeys his mother and breaks into Mr McGregor?s garden. Potter also included charming sketches that she later coloured-in for the 1902 published version. She honed her skills through drawing insects and mushrooms and had even submitted a scientific paper to the Linnean Society (it was rejected because she was a woman).

Thompson is attracted to the darkness in Potter?s stories. ?Some of them are profoundly unsettling,? Thompson tells me, ?and of course those were my favourites when I grew up.? When Mr McGregor chases Peter Rabbit there is the real danger he will share his father?s fate ? being baked in a pie for the farmer?s table.

?When I was doing Nanny McPhee,? says Thompson, referring to the two hugely successful films she wrote and starred in, ?people would say: but there?s death and there?s divorce and there?s disappointment. But children more than anyone instinctively know that life is full of danger.? She adds: ?I?m sure if you asked Jo Rowling, she?d say the same thing.?

In this respect (and others), Thompson takes inspiration from her father, Eric, who wrote and narrated The Magic Roundabout television series. ?He would say, ?please don?t say I?m writing for children?,? she recalls with passion. ?It?s patronising to write for children as though they came from another planet. Dad said he wrote to please himself.?

In the same way, she says, ?Potter didn?t write for children, she wrote for everyone.? She insists her Nanny McPhee films and The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit are not exclusively for children. ?This separation of us all out into camps according to our age or our sex is depressing. I don?t think it?s culturally healthy.?

Thompson?s father read her the Beatrix Potter books when she was a child, and her new book resonates with her childhood visits to Scotland. The Further Tale, like the original, finds Peter Rabbit squeezing under the gate into Mr McGregor?s garden.

He then hops into a basket covered with a tartan picnic cloth, eats the cheese and pickle sandwich inside, and promptly falls asleep. When he wakes up he finds that Mr and Mrs McGregor have taken him up the High Road. There he meets a huge black rabbit called Finlay McBurney who turns out to be his cousin.

?I thought that Potter had been so influenced by Scotland as a child,? says Thompson, ?so it seemed right that he should visit.? It?s also a homage to the Scottish side of her family and ? once more ? her father: Eric wrote a book based on The Magic Roundabout characters called Dougal?s Scottish Holiday.

[From The Telegraph]

Well, Emma has gone a long way in explaining the frankly terrifying London Olympics Opening Ceremony, right? ?Children more than anyone instinctively know that life is full of danger.? I mean? I think that?s debatable. Obviously, when you?re talking about Beatrix Potter or JK Rowling, I think you?re talking about a certain level of scariness and thrills. But, as with everything, there are limits. You don?t want kids to see a lot of gore or anything truly terrifying. But! I did like this: ?This separation of us all out into camps according to our age or our sex is depressing. I don?t think it?s culturally healthy.? She?s amazing.

Emma Thompson walks the 'MIB III' carpet with adorable 12-year-old Gaia Wise
I?ve been ignoring most of the photos from the Men In Black III promotional tour. It?s always a slippery slope, and I?m often surprised by which celebrity stories get the most comments, and which celebrities you want to see more of. Mostly I feel like Josh Brolin isn?t worth his own post, and unless Will Smith is posing awkwardly with his wife or getting jiggy with some other man or woman, he?s not super-interesting either. But all this time, I had forgotten that my girl Emma Thompson is in MIB III. I LOVE HER. And she?s out there, promoting her supporting part in the film too – these are photos of Emma at yesterday?s UK premiere. Doesn?t she look great? For her, I mean. Emma is never really fashionable or anything, and this Maria Grachvogel suit looks like something out of Miami Vice. But her un-mangled, un-Botoxed face! Her hair! Her smile! I love her.

Emma brought her husband, Greg Wise, and her daughter Gaia to the premiere as well. Gaia usually doesn?t get photographed that much, and the last time I saw the 12-year-old, she had longer, ginger-ish hair. She?s now got this super-cute bob hair which is very matchy-matchy with her mom. I think the longer hair made her look more like a kid – this is a more ?mature? look for someone so young. Still, Gaia is a really beautiful young lady. Gaia is wearing a dress from Zara!

The Mail had a story with these photos, and they used some older quotes from Emma, talking about motherhood and work, and they just reminded me of how much I love her. Emma says:

?I don’t want your readers ever to think they have to have it all. I think that’s a revolting concept. It’s so false! Sometimes you’ll have some things, and sometimes you’ll have other things. And you do not need it all at once; it’s not good for you. You can’t be a great mum and work the whole time necessarily; those two things aren’t ideal. We have an awful lot to work on and to debate about in relation to our working lives, because it isn’t working for a lot of people, particularly for a lot of women. The only way you can have it all is by delegating all the running of the home to other people – which I don’t ever want to do… So you do it yourself, and it takes time and energy and effort. And if you give it the time, it’s profoundly enjoyable.?

[Via The Mail]

I?m also including photos of Will Smith and Josh Brolin. Is anyone else getting ?sad? vibes from Will? Like, I look at photos of him and I feel like he?s sad and he?s going through some stuff. As for Josh? I know he?s probably a total dirtbag in real life, but I would hit that so hard. I?m insanely attracted to him (and all dirtbags).

Emma Thompson: Audrey Hepburn couldn't sing, couldn't act was 'twee'
Yesterday, Emma Thompson finally got her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! Yay! Who knew that it takes two Oscars and, like, 20-some years of being a movie star to make it happen? Actually, I think celebrities have to pay for their own stars now, so it?s likely that whatever studio is promoting Nanny McPhee was all ?We?ll cough up the money for promotion.? Emma looked stunning (for her), and she brought along some friends for her big day: her Nanny McPhee costar Maggie Gyllenhaal, Emma?s ex-boyfriend and friend of 30-odd years, Hugh Laurie

Emma Thompson thinks 'having it all' is 'a revolting concept'

Emma Thompson thinks 'having it all' is 'a revolting concept'
Emma Thompson and Maggie Gyllenhaal were the cover girls for the August issue of Good Housekeeping. I saw the issue but I always forgot to check out the interview for some reason. I should have known better - Emma is always a great interview, and she always has sh-t to say. Emma and Maggie are doing promotion for the Nanny McPhee movie, in which Emma revives the character she adapted for the screen. By the way, did you know that both Ralph Fiennes and Ewan Mcgregor are in the second film? True story. Anyway, through the course of the Good Housekeeping interview, Emma basically blasts the concept of ?having it all? - a great family, motherhood, a great career, etc. But Emma is not Gisele. She?s not looking down her nose at us. Instead, she?s saying she?s one of us, and that she has lots of problems too:

She has long juggled her work as an actress with raising a family. But Emma Thompson believes that no woman can have the perfect career and be a faultless mother - at the same time.

The 51-year-old Oscar winner, who has a ten-year-old daughter, said trying to ‘have it all’ rarely works well for anyone in a family. She argued that the only way to manage motherhood and a full-time job was by enlisting hired help, something she insists she won’t do.

Her intervention comes at a time when the idea of ‘having it all’ is under attack from working mothers who find themselves run into the ground as they chase an impossible dream. Even its most ardent cheerleaders such as novelist Fay Weldon are thinking again as they see the effects on family life.

A recent survey by Grazia magazine revealed that one in ten women who has had children wants to give up work completely. The debate was further fuelled by Samantha Cameron, who is expecting a child in September and quit her full time job as creative director of Smythson, where she has worked for 14 years, within days of her husband becoming Prime Minister.

Miss Thompson made the comments in the US edition of Good Housekeeping magazine with actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, with whom she stars in the forthcoming sequel to Nanny Mcphee.

The British actress is married to actor Greg Wise, 44, and in addition to ten-year-old Gaia they adopted a 16-year-old Rwandan refugee named Tindyebwa Agaba, who is now 23.

Speaking to Good Housekeeping, Miss Thompson said: ‘I don’t want your readers ever to think they have to have it all. I think that’s a revolting concept. It’s so false! Sometimes you’ll have some things, and sometimes you’ll have other things. And you do not need it all at once; it’s not good for you. You can’t be a great mum and work the whole time necessarily; those two things aren’t ideal.?

‘We have an awful lot to work on and to debate about in relation to our working lives, because it isn’t working for a lot of people, particularly for a lot of women. The only way you can have it all is by delegating all the running of the home to other people - which I don’t ever want to do… So you do it yourself, and it takes time and energy and effort. And if you give it the time, it’s profoundly enjoyable.’

Miss Thompson added that when she had Gaia at 41 she was still not a ‘grown up’ but the experience has forced her to mature very quickly.

She does not have a regular nanny and she and Wise take turns to work so one is always home with their daughter.

She added: ‘We’re all supposed to be happy all the time. What is that about? Why have we lost contact with the possibility of saying, “Do you know what? I can’t do that. Sorry, I can’t manage that as well.”‘

In the interview Miss Gyllenhaal, who is married to actor Peter Sarsgaard -with whom she has a three-year-old daughter, Romana, told how Miss Thompson had inspired her to put her husband first more in her life.

The 32-year-old said: ‘Emma, you kind of gave me the idea that a part of my life, a part of my mind, has to be devoted to my husband. My mother’s generation has been bucking against that. But I’ve just been finding so much pleasure in sacrificing sometimes for my husband - going to where he’s working and tidying up his trailer because he couldn’t manage to do it, and bringing him things that will make him feel better, and being a wife in a more classical way. It feels really right to me.’

[From The Daily Mail]

As much as I think to myself, ?Yeah, if I had Greg Wise at home waiting for me, I would never leave? I totally respect the realistic vision of family life Emma is presenting. I like when moms are honest. I like when anyone is honest, whether it?s Cameron Diaz not playing the ?I can?t wait to be have babies!? game and simply acknowledging that she doesn?t feel the need to be a mother, or when it?s Emma saying that the idea of ?having it all? is a trap. A trap we design for ourselves, for the most part.

Emma Thompson removes her name from the Roman Polanski petition
A few weeks ago, I mentioned in an Emma Thompson post that she was one of the many entertainment people who signed the Roman Polanski petition. I didn?t want it to be true, this cruel, cruel cut. The thought of Emma faltering after so many years of being awesome was just too difficult for me to face. Now it looks like I can love my Emma once again - because she?s asking to have her name removed from the petition. According to Jezebel (linked from LaineyGossip), when Emma gave a scheduled speech at Exeter University a few nights ago, she was challenged (politely) by a student named Caitlin. Caitlin was heartbroken, like many of us, that Emma had signed the petition, so she organized another petition, a ?take your name off that other petition, Ms. Thompson? petition. Caitlin got 410 signatures and numerous comments, all of which she brought to the meeting she had set with Emma. Here?s what happened next, according to Caitlin (via Jezebel):

Emma did not have much time between meetings, but she gave me all of the time that she had. I asked her why she had signed the petition, and she explained about how well she knows Polanski, how terrible his life has been, and how forgiving the survivor of the rape all those years ago now is.

She said she thought the intentions of the judge were unclear, as were the intentions of those who arrested him recently. She told me that a lot of her friends had rung her up asking her to sign the petition, so there had been a certain amount of pressure. She said that she had already been thinking a lot about the petition, as others had expressed their dismay at her signing it.

I handed her our petition and the comments. She read them both through thoroughly, and came back to me. She said, while she supported Polanski as a friend, a crime is a crime. I don’t know whether she had realised the extent of Polanski’s crime, but she is now fully aware. She will remove her name from the petition ? in fact, she said she would call today and sort it out. Even though, she stressed, Polanski has had some truly terrible experiences in his lifetime, experiences that we couldn’t even imagine and which should not be taken out of the equation, she agreed that she could not put her name to a petition asking for his release.?

Assuming that she will be true to her word, her name will be removed in the very near future. Hopefully the press will pick up on it.

She left me with this, to pass on to everyone who has signed the petition/raised awareness of this issue: “Know that I will remove my name because of you, and all of the good work that you have been doing. I have read your petition. I have heard you. And I will listen.?

[From Jezebel]

While I totally applaud Emma for seeing the error of her ways, and changing her mind with thoughtful grace, I know I?m not really alone in thinking Emma?s reasons for initially signing the damn thing were a bit sketchy. Jezebel points that out too. They sum up celebrity reasoning as: ?he’s suffered, he’s charming, the victim wants it dropped, judicial shenanigans, all the cool kids are signing ? minus any thought of what he actually did to the victim in 1977, before fleeing the country.? While I think some of those reasons should be factored into what happens to Polanski once he comes back to America, they should not be a factor in people wanting his immediate release. Still, I?m going to give Emma credit - she listened to her critics, weighed her thoughts carefully, and changed her mind, acknowledging her error. That?s more than any other signer has done.

Emma Thompson agrees with Madonna: British men are 'emotionally retarded'
The always gracious, funny, amazing and talented Emma Thompson is adding some new jobs to her resume over the past few weeks. At the Golden Globes, she seemed like the head cheerleader, or den mother, to younger (mostly British) actresses. Now it appears she’s adding another title: Defender of Madonna. Thompson recently spoke out about Madonna?s immediate post-separation statement that Guy Ritchie was ?emotionally retarded?.

Actress Emma Thompson felt a rapport with Madonna when the pop superstar publicly referred to her ex-husband Guy Ritchie as “emotionally retarded”, because she thinks the same of her spouse, actor Greg Wise.

The Oscar winner admits she was stunned to hear Madonna’s comments on stage during her Sticky + Sweet world tour last October (08) just days after her separation from director Ritchie was announced.

But Thompson confesses the singer did have a point about many British males. She says, “I felt very badly for British men when she said that. I thought, ‘Well, it’s not across the board, but it is true that an awful lot of them are a bit kind of closed down.’”

And Thompson insists the problem lies with bad parenting. She adds, “I blame the class system, which resulted in two centuries of the most appalling parenting you could possibly imagine, with children being sent away to school at a very young age, which is a very odd habit when you think about it…I know that my father was quite reserved with his emotions. And so is my husband, too. I’ve been with him for 14 years now, and it’s sort of like living with a clam. I try and try and try to open the shell, and, yes, after all these years, I have managed to get it very slightly open - and then, sometimes, it shuts again and I have to start all over again.?

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m fine with it, and very happily married. But it is the way it is.”

You see, when she says it, it sounds great. But coming out Madonna?s mouth - well, let?s just say it didn?t seem this thoughtful or pleasant. It?s interesting to know that Greg Wise is a bit stuffy. That way, Emma gets to be the crazy-brilliant one. Awesome! But speaking of men who dated Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie (?House?) recently gave an interview to Playboy. He talks about how much fun he and Thompson had when they used to date.

Hugh Laurie looks back on his romance with ex-girlfriend Emma Thompson with fond memories. Laurie was Thompson’s first boyfriend at university.

And the House actor - who has been married to wife Jo Green since 1989 - enjoyed dating the Love Actually actress before they both became famous.

He tells Playboy, “Those were blissful days, I must say. We couldn’t even imagine a life in Hollywood back then. Hollywood was as distant and impossible as El Dorado.

“It was all about fun. Watching Emma was like watching the sun or wind or some other elemental force. Her talent even then was inescapable.”

[From Showbiz Spy]

Sigh. That?s how I imagine British men - romantic and lovely, not ?emotionally retarded?. I wonder why Emma and Hugh ever split up? They were probably very lovely together. I guess she has to make do with Willoughby.
