Emma Thompson took Gaia out of 'sausage factory' private school

Emma Thompson took Gaia out of 'sausage factory' private school
During last year?s awards season, Emma Thompson kept bringing her teenage daughter Gaia as her date to various events. That?s why we have so many current-ish photos of Gaia. Gaia is currently 15 years old and she looks SO much like her mom. But I also see some of her dad, Greg Wise, in there too. Anyway, I always assumed that Gaia was and is as clever and cool as Emma, because how could she not be? Emma and Greg raised Gaia in England, and Gaia has been educated at private schools (or as the Brits call it, public schools). But no more. Greg announced a few days ago that they were taking Gaia out of private school and she?s going to be homeschooled from now on. Ruh roh.

Emma Thompson’s daughter has been withdrawn from her 6,000-a-term school so she can be taught in her back garden after deciding main-stream learning ‘wasn’t for her’. Fifteen-year-old Gaia is being educated at home, her father, the actor Greg Wise, revealed today. Wise said she made the decision just before she started her GCSEs, leading them to build a classroom in the garden of their West Hampstead home.

‘School isn’t for everyone,’ he told The Times Magazine. ‘She loves learning and she’s terribly focused and hardworking, but she didn’t like the sausage factory of formal education.’

Wise said he would not be teaching Gaia – but pointed out as many as 60 per cent of today’s youngsters would end up doing jobs which were yet to be invented.

‘So what are we teaching them?’ he wondered. ‘I think really we should just teach Latin and free-form dance.’

Thompson has previously revealed she hoped her daughter would do her A-levels at Camden School for Girls, the state secondary where she herself was taught.

[From The Daily Mail]

Do I think this is going to be the same kind of ?homeschooling? that Kendall and Kylie Jenner received? Absolutely not. But it does make me nervous. I?m the daughter of a public school teacher, and I had a great public school education myself (I still can?t spell worth a damn, but that?s not my school?s fault). I believe that kids should go to a real school because I believe in the process. I think Gaia?s private homeschooling will probably be thorough and Greg and Emma can obviously afford it, but it bugs me. Every teenager is disaffected and distracted, and it feels like the answer of ?Eh, they?ll grow out of it? doesn?t apply to some special snowflakes.

Emma Thompson: 'You can't be a great mum and keep working all the time'

Emma Thompson: 'You can't be a great mum and keep working all the time'
Emma Thompson did the awards circuit earlier this year when she got some nominations for her work in Saving Mr. Banks. These are some pics of Emma and her family at the BAFTAs ? that?s her teenage daughter Gaia, and that?s Emma and Greg Wise?s adopted son Tindyebwa Agaba, who is 26 years old now. Emma considers herself Tindyebwa?s mother/guardian/friend since they adopted him when he was a teenage refugee. I?ve always been pretty jealous of Gaia and Tindyebwa because I always imagined that Emma as a mom is probably pretty amazing. In the past, Emma has swatted away the idea that women can have or should want to ?have it all? ? but in a new interview, Emma does say that she gave herself an unconventional birthday present: a year away from work, where she was ?just a mum.?

Emma Thompson has urged parents to take a year off work to spend more time with their children, saying: ?You can?t be a great mum and keep working all the time.?

The actress recently put her Hollywood career on hold of 12 months to look after her children?… but with a wealth estimated at about 30?million, she is better placed than most to be able to afford the time off.

The 55-year-old said: ?I wanted to spend more time with my family. A year off was my birthday present to myself. I didn?t actually act or write. I was just a mum. I taught drama at my daughter?s school, cooked meals and had fun. I highly recommend others to do the same if they can afford it.?

The Love Actually actress ? who has a 14-year-old daughter, Gaia, and a 26-year-old adopted son, Tindyebwa Agaba ? said she had come to the conclusion that it wasn?t always possible to juggle parenthood and a career.

She said: ?Sometimes in life you?ll have some things, at other times you will have other things. You don?t need it all at once, it?s not good for you. Motherhood is a full-time job. The only way I could have continued working would have been by delegating the running of the home to other people. I never wanted to do this as I find motherhood profoundly enjoyable.?

The star who recently played Mary Poppins creator P.L. Travers in Saving Mr Banks, also described her husband Greg Wise as ?a great aesthetic pleasure?.

She said: ?He is the only luxury I can?t imagine ever being able to give up. Because he can cook, wash up, clean, entertain children, understand maths homework, put up shelves, take them down and put them up elsewhere and repair the little holes left behind, garden with a purpose, drive sensibly but very fast on motorways and let me get on with my life.

[From The Daily Mail]

I hate to ask this (especially about Emma), but is there a little judgy-motherhood in this interview? I mean, she throws in the appropriate caveats (?if they can afford it?), but it does seem sort of out-of-touch with the real struggles of working mothers who, for the most part, work because they have to, because their families need the income. I didn?t enjoy this blanket statement: ?You can?t be a great mum and keep working all the time.? Emma just stepped into one of the most fiery of all of the Motherhood Industrial Complex?s flame wars. Think of it this way: what would we be saying if it was Gwyneth Paltrow who said this?

Meryl Streep sent Emma Thompson a 'long, heartfelt email' after Emma's Oscar snub

Meryl Streep sent Emma Thompson a 'long, heartfelt email' after Emma's Oscar snub
It?s weird to think of Meryl Streep sitting in front of a laptop and checking her email, right? I bet her spam is fancier than any spam I get. I bet her spam does flawless accent work and has glowing, youthful skin. Do you think that Meryl and I both get Emily?s List email alerts? Does her bank send her too many promotional emails? And who does Meryl email? Does she have a long list of A-list contacts? Does she send off pithy, funny little emails or is she more of an email-as-long-form-letter type of person? So many questions.

Anyway, Meryl appeared on The Ellen Show last Friday (I think?), and she talked about one particular email she sent to Emma Thompson following last week?s Oscar nominations announcements. As you know, Meryl was nominated for her 18th (!!!) career nomination for her role in August: Osage County. Emma Thompson was one of the biggest snubs though ? even though Emma had gotten all of the big nominations (SAG, Golden Globe, Critics Choice) and a few critics? awards, Emma?s performance in Saving Mr. Banks was somehow deemed unworthy of recognition. So Meryl wrote up an email to her friend. Meryl said: “I was really shocked. And I wrote her a long, heartfelt email saying how bad I felt. And she wrote me back and said, ‘Good.’” HA! Here?s the

Emma Thomspson's gay relatives were the reason she 'rejected Christianity'

Emma Thomspson's gay relatives were the reason she 'rejected Christianity'
Emma Thompson is just a goddess. Is there anyone who really has strong feelings against her? No. Even if Emma isn?t your particular cup of Earl Grey, surely you can admit that she?s much cooler and more interesting than the average movie star. Anyway, Emma has a wonderful new interview in The Advocate to promote Saving Mr. Banks. I?ve never thought of Emma as particular active in gay rights work, but as it turns out, she feels very strongly about it. You can read the full Advocate piece here and here are some highlights:

On not wanting to shake PL Travers? snippy attitude: ?Oh, I didn?t try to shake it, darling. It was so much fun I thought I?d adopt it for the rest of my life. You can be honest about everything and say, ?No, I don?t want to come to your f–king party ? and I?m not sending you a bloody Christmas card either!? It?s bliss.?

Travers may have been bisexual, but that wasn?t included in the film: ?Sure. She was what I would call a real searcher. I don?t know whether they were lovers or not, but she did live with Madge for a long, long time, and she certainly had very complex, passionate relationships with both women and men. She was an explorer of her own condition, and very possibly her own sexuality? You can?t fit everything about a person?s life into two hours. Like when we made Carrington, which did address homosexuality, we didn?t include stuff about Dora Carrington?s relationships with women because it would?ve looked like she?d literally gone bed-hopping her entire life. Besides, Saving Mr. Banks is about a woman?s creative, artistic life. It?s a relief, quite frankly, because when is a movie about a woman not about her love life??

The Crone Period: ?At this particular moment in time, the last thing on Mrs. Travers?s mind is her erotic life, but she did divide the life of women into three main parts: nymph, mother, and crone. When she went to Los Angeles to meet with Walt Disney, she was definitely in the crone period, which she felt was the best patch because you were free to do what you liked and still had energy to do it. She was actually older than I played her ? we all had long conversations about it, because I could?ve easily played her more elderly with prosthetics and padding ? but I was interested in making sure the audience realized that this woman did have an erotic life, and that it could still be a part of her life, but she had chosen to live alone. It didn?t occur to her to find someone to pay for her house or her bills. She was completely independent, and it was her independence that, in the end, forced her to give up her character, Mary Poppins, for adaptation.?

She?s never played a “proper” lesbian: ?Nobody?s come up with a really interesting one for me yet, but I?m sure they will? I don?t take jobs to alter public perception about myself, which seems to me a high road to nothing ? and rather unattractively self-involved. I?m interested in doing work that?s well written, fascinating, and true??

Feeling a connection to the LGBT community: ?I always have, perhaps because I?ve always felt like an outsider. I believe that actors and anyone in the arts should be outsiders, so that we can say whatever we want and hold a mirror up, as Shakespeare says, to what?s really going on in the world. We shouldn?t be within the pale of polite society. It?s a disaster that actors have become so respectable.?

Her gay influences, a gay uncle and two gay godfathers: ?Yes, I was brought up, partially, by these remarkable, intelligent, wonderful men, and they made me consider and question all moral systems from a very young age. They were the reason I rejected Christianity outright, because it said that homosexuality wasn?t allowed. I thought, That?s ridiculous! It?s perfectly normal, so what do you mean it isn?t allowed??

Her loyal gay following: ?Oh, and I love it. It?s a source of great pride and happiness. That support is very supportive, and my support in return is so profound and real.?

On Hugh Grant describing her as a ?bloke?: ?Well, I find that terrifically difficult stuff. Look, in a sense, he was trying to express approval, but what?s wrong with being feminine? What is he actually saying? The problem is that men have extreme difficulty with powerful women, who will immediately be dubbed masculine. I don?t accept that. Yes, I?m a powerful woman, but I don?t think I?m like a man at all. I don?t want to be a man. It?s not something that any person of my gender would wish, whether lesbian or straight. We?re women. I want to be allowed to be a powerful woman without being told that means I?m like a man.?

Fantasy lady hookups: ?After full-on snogging Meryl Streep in Angels in America, where do you go from there? We practically had sex, for God?s sake. [Laughs] Oh, there are so many beautiful women… Well, I met Sandy Bullock at an awards thing a couple years ago, and she said to me, ?If I were gay, you?d be the one.? I said, ?I?m there!??

[From The Advocate]

I find her answer about being called a ?bloke? to be very interesting, mostly because that?s something people say about me too ? I?ve been told I have a dude?s sense of humor, that I write, talk and think like a man. I don?t really think much of it ? like, it?s not a compliment or an insult, I guess people just think my soul is rather butch. I consider myself feminine and I don?t actually want to be a man either, like Emma.

Also, I had no idea she ?rejected Christianity outright.? Emma is such an interesting person.

Emma Thompson: 'It's not as if I?ve got the same choices as Brad Pitt in filmmaking'
Holy crap, how incredible is this Parade cover? Emma Thompson looks like she?s about 29 years old here. She should always be photographed this way, like a photographer just chanced upon her in a meadow. Anyway, Emma is having a great week ? she?s just received two huge nominations at the Golden Globes and SAGs, both for lead actress for her performance in Saving Mr. Banks. Emma also picked up Best Actress at the LA Film Critics Awards AND the National Board of Review. Which means that Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep might need to take a seat because Emma is about to win her THIRD Oscar? How incredible would that be? Anyway, Emma has a charming new interview with Parade because everything that comes out of her mouth is charming. I love her.

On her prim and proper 60s look in Saving Mr. Banks, which required her to get her hair permed.

?It was a nightmare! People would bleat in the streets as I went by. I didn?t have sex for six months!?

On working with Tom Hanks.

??for a long time we?d looked for something to do together. [After reading the script] I rang Tom and said, ?This is great, because it?s not a romance. It?s about a battle that they both win and lose. It?s perfect.??

On her anger and depression when her first marriage to Kenneth Branagh ended in divorce.

?I don?t feel anger or depression about it now. I think we place a lot of pressure on ourselves and our relationships.?Yes, it was very painful, but it was also something that happens between people a lot. Sometimes things go wrong and it doesn?t last, and that seems to me perfectly reasonable.?

On her dowdy appearance when she first started acting.

?I marched onto the Johnny Carson show [doing publicity for Howards End] wearing a shapeless dress and flat shoes. I looked like a geography teacher. In my 20s, I eschewed everything overtly female. I didn?t have a handbag; I?d carry a plastic bag? It?s only recently that I?ve even bothered with glamour because it seemed like a fun idea.?

On the importance of her costume while playing Sybill in the Harry Potter films.

?I had great fun doing Sybill. The genius of that costume?the wig and the glasses?I mean, Barack Obama could have played her. I did a silly voice, but really it was that costume.?

On why so many of her films touch on the subject of love.

?Partly because it?s one of the major areas in which women are allowed to take part. It?s not as if I?ve got the same kind of choices as Brad Pitt in filmmaking. But also because love is the only thing that matters. Not just romantic love?there?s affection, Eros, family love?it?s exactly what we?re designed to do.?

[From Parade]

Emma?s talked about her early, strident-feminist days and I believe her when she talks about eschewing glamour when she was younger. I would say that it?s more of a British thing than a feminist thing, though ? it?s just something I?ve noticed about so many of the younger English actresses ? it?s like they don?t want to be seen as ?giving in? to glamour. They?d rather be ?quirky? individuals, and it?s only in their 30s and 40s that they really put some effort into doing the glamour thing.

I love this ? ?It?s not as if I?ve got the same kind of choices as Brad Pitt in filmmaking?? Truth. And how sad is that? This quote made me tingly for another viewing of Love Actually though: ??because love is the only thing that matters.? I need to watch Love Actually again.

As for the stuff about her marriage to Branagh ? she?s so classy. She would just hate it if anyone ever saw her as a victim. Bless her.

Emma Thompson was 'fierce' in her 20s: 'I?ve always been a card-carrying feminist'
Here are some lovely new photos of Emma Thompson outside of her BAFTA ?A Life In Pictures? event last night. I can?t say I love her hair here, but otherwise, she looks awesome. Decent LBD, great coat, great attitude? lord, I just love her so much. She?s riding a particular kind of high these days because of Saving Mr. Banks, the film where she plays PL Travers to Tom Hanks? Walt Disney. Many say Emma is looking more and more like ?the favorite? to get a Best Actress nomination and if nominated, she?ll probably be against Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep for sure. Which should be awesome!!! Also wonderful? The fact that Emma is doing a lot of press for this film, which means so many new quotes. Emma recently spoke to The Telegraph about feminism, body image and motherhood:

Being a 54-year-old actress: ?Well, at this stage of life, you?re glad to be working at all. And then the best role I?ve ever played comes along. It was one of those where you read the first page of the script and you think, ‘yes, I?m in. I?ll do it.? All of us, at my age, are like, ‘there are no roles for us at all?. So I?m happy to be offered acting work.?

Actresses in their 20s: ?It seems young actresses are under pressure to look a particular way. They look the same, that?s the thing. And they?re all being photoshopped in adverts for all sorts of (products), so maybe that?s difficult as well ? because you?ve got pictures of yourself looking perfect. They have to be this specific model size, and if they get on to the red carpet, they?re all having to walk like models and dress like models. I think the pressure is terrible.?

She blames the handlers for making women conform: ?If you?re invited to re-invent yourself, in the language in which that conversation is couched, it?s difficult to resist: ‘You?ve got to be thinner.? ‘You?ve got to be prettier. Because we need to sell you, and we won?t be able to sell you if you don?t look like this.? It?s not about acting. They don?t care if you can act or not. I can only imagine what the pressures must be like.?

What would have happened if someone said that to her in her 20s: ?I?d have told them where to shove it. I?ve always been a card-carrying feminist. But in those days, I was fierce, fierce, very angry. So I wouldn?t have put up with a single bloody minute of that.?

Social media: ?Children, it seems to me, get reviewed every day. Whatever they do, they post something, then people make comments about it, and critique your life. That seems to be enormous pressure to put yourself under.?

Kids? films: ?Kids will think movies are just those things in which things blow up, and they?re loud and relentless and ultimately empty. They?re cynical. They?re all about greed in the film industry. Children really do deserve better.?

[From The Telegraph]

I?ve actively ignored the claims by such women as Courtney Stodden and Miley Cyrus that they are somehow ?feminists,? not because I think ?feminism? has such narrow parameters within which only an elite few can fit. I ignore them because they are idiots. You don?t have to read the complete works of Andrea Dworkin to call yourself a feminist, but you do have to be able to define it beyond ?I like taking off my clothes for money, yay feminism!? While I?m happy that there are some idiot celebrities who at least do a better job of paying lip service to feminism than, say, Taylor Swift, I prefer my celebrity feminists to be more like the magnificent Emma Thompson. When she talks about how ?fierce? she was in her 20s, you better believe it.

Emma Thompson didn't wear a wig for 'saving Mr. Banks?, she really got a perm
I?ve had a long week of writing about Kardashians and Kanye West, so this post is just intended as a brief respite, a chance to write about someone I love and adore. Emma Thompson covers the new issue of Variety to promote her film Saving Mr. Banks. Many people believe that Emma will be nominated for an Oscar for this role, which means? the awards season is going to be like Christmas for me. Emma waging an Oscar campaign? Come on, that?s just the best thing ever! Here?s what I love too: Emma will actually campaign. Here she is on Variety, which will probably be the first of many magazine covers. She?ll give tons of interviews. She?ll say witty, amazing things. I?m looking forward to it! So honk (or comment!) if you love Emma. Anyway, you can read the full Variety piece here, and here are some highlights – including the admission that Emma got a terrible perm for the role.

She doesn?t want to direct: ?My dad always thought I would be a director because I was so bossy,? says Thompson, who suffered a devastating blow when she lost her father, Eric Thompson, when he was just 53. She briefly considered directing, but realized she had no interest. ?Why would you?? she asks, in an erudite voice that sounds like a college literature professor?s. ?It?s a horrible job. It?s so hard directing. My father was a director and I was married to a director (Kenneth Branagh).?

Why she agreed to Saving Mr. Banks: ?I hadn?t worked for a while, and I said to my agent, ?I?ve got to earn some money,? ? says the 54-year-old thesp. ?I got offered, in quick succession, a very old lady in a wheelchair; Bradley Cooper?s mother (in ?Silver Linings Playbook?); and Mother Teresa. And I thought people must assume I still look like Nanny McPhee,? in which she plays a British caretaker with a single scraggly tooth and a wart on her chin.

Relating to PL Travers: ?I think when my father died, I swallowed him whole, and I think she did too. She swallowed a lot of pain, which she spent the rest of her life metabolizing.?

Emma got a perm for the role: An unforeseen battle in the making of ?Saving Mr. Banks? had to do with Thompson?s hair for the role. In real life, Travers had a simple bubble cut with frilly curls. The hairdo matched her steely personality, and was a crucial foothold into the character. But Thompson is wig averse: ?I think a lot of energy comes off the top of your head when you?re acting,? she says, ?and a wig really puts the lid on it.? So she visited a salon to get the Travers cut. ?I went in willingly like the proverbial woolly lamb to the slaughter and I came out looking like a baby woolly mammoth,? Thompson says. She wasn?t expecting her hair to feel so tight after her perm. She tried to unspool the curls, even going as far as rubbing olive oil on her scalp, but it was no use. ?I did everything I could,? Thompson says. ?I rolled around. I pulled at it. I think the spirit of P.L. Travers was going, ?If you?re going to play me, I?m going to make you suffer ? you?re not going to have sex for months on end.? ?

Being able to act without dialogue: ?I was doing a mime course in Paris with a great French clown who I learned a lot from,? says Thompson, who was 24 at the time. ?At bottom, I am a clown.?

Bill Clinton hated her role in Primary Colors: ?He said, ?We feel so much the same about so many things, but you did that horrible movie.? And I?d completely forgotten. I said, ?Which horrible movie?? I thought he?d seen something that he hated.? She tried to get the president to understand what she had been doing. ?I said, ?Bill, did you ever see it?? He said, ?Of course not.? I said, ?Listen, the movie was about the press.??

She doesn?t want to live in LA, but she likes to visit: ?I love coming to California and I love coming to Hollywood,? she says. ?I?ve always been so warmly welcomed.? Thompson recalls winning her first Oscar, a leading actress statue for ?Howards End,? at age 33. While she called receiving the award onstage ?extraordinary,? she enjoyed the aftermath backstage even more ? ?that feeling all the crew were so lovely to me because I was a foreign lady they never heard of.?

Her two Oscars: Thompson keeps her two Oscars in the downstairs bathroom in her London home so that guests can see them. ?I had them redipped,? she says. ?I sent them over to America, and they came back all sparkly.?

Doing her hand and footprint ceremony at Grauman?s Chinese Theater: She wasn?t sure what the ceremony would entail. ?Perhaps they?ll just throw me in the L.A. River afterwards, which won?t matter of course, because it?s just six inches deep,? she says. ?I?ll just lie there looking at the stars, thinking, ?At last, I?ve arrived.? ?

[From Variety]

In the Variety story, they speak to Richard Curtis, who says that he had dinner with the permed Emma and her husband Greg Wise, and that the dinner was simply, like, three hours of perm jokes and jokes about how Greg wouldn?t have sex with her when her hair was so horrible. God, I love them. I love HER. We should all be so lucky to have more Emma in our lives.

Emma Thompson no longer angry about Kenneth Branagh & Helena's affair
Before Eddie, LeAnn and Brandi, there was the Uncool Bermuda Triangle of Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. And before that Uncool Triangle, there was the epic scandal involving Helena Bonham Carter, Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson. All of them were friends. Kenneth and Emma were married, and frequent collaborators. Kenneth was being called the next Laurence Olivier. Emma Thompson won two Oscars within three years. Helena was considered The Corset Queen, the go-to girl for all English period films. And then disaster struck. Kenneth and Helena had an affair. Emma and Kenneth divorced, and she ended up with Greg Wise. Kenneth and Helena tried to make their relationship work for a few years, but she ended up leaving him for Tim Burton. And now Kenneth is remarried to someone else entirely.

This was all before internet gossip was a thing, but it was a HUGE deal back when it happened. Emma definitely came out the winner, but to my knowledge, she never played the ?wronged woman? card or tried to turn public sympathy into a career. She just got on with her life, married a great guy (seriously, I love Greg Wise), had a daughter and she?s still turning in amazing work. As Emma does her promotional rounds for Saving Mr. Banks (which might earn Emma yet another Oscar nomination), Emma spoke about the thing with Kenneth and Helena:

Emma Thompson has spoken for the first time about her then husband Kenneth Branagh?s affair with Helena Bonham Carter. The liaison ended Miss Thompson?s six-year marriage to Branagh, who she wed in 1989 just two years after they met while filming.

Miss Thompson said the break-up was ?all blood under the bridge?, adding: ?You can?t hold on to anything like that. It?s pointless. I haven?t got the energy for it. Helena and I made our peace years and years ago.?

The 54-year-old double Oscar winner has spoken candidly about the depression that she suffered following the end of her marriage in 1995.

Miss Bonham Carter is believed to have started an affair with Branagh in 1994 while she played his love interest in Branagh?s version of Mary Shelley?s Frankenstein. They had a five-year relationship. Miss Thompson said she channelled her feelings of betrayal into her portrayal of a wronged wife in Richard Curtis?s romantic comedy Love Actually.

?I?ve had so much bloody practice at crying in a bedroom, then having to go out and be cheerful, gathering up the pieces of my heart and putting them in a drawer,? she said.

Miss Thompson says there are similarities between her and Miss Bonham Carter, 47, which may have appealed to Branagh, 52: ?Being slightly mad and a bit fashion-challenged. Perhaps that?s why Ken loved us both. She?s a wonderful woman, Helena?.

Miss Thompson is married to Greg Wise, an actor and producer whom she met on the set of the 1995 version of Jane Austen?s Sense and Sensibility. The couple have one daughter, Gaia, 13, and a son, Tindyebwa Agaba, 26, a former child soldier from Rwanda whom they informally adopted when he was 16.

Miss Bonham Carter has two children, Billy, ten, and Nell, five, with her partner, film director Tim Burton. Miss Thompson has starred in two films with Miss Bonham Carter: Howard?s End in 1992 and the Harry Potter series from 2007.

In 2002, Miss Bonham Carter said her relationships had been misunderstood in the press, alluding to allegations of her affair with Branagh, and later, Burton.

?Yes. I?m a habitual, serial home breaker, apparently,? she said. ?It gets frustrating because I know the story and the truth of it. It is very hurtful and, frankly, some of the things I have been called are quite libelous. But it?s part of the price of being in the public eye.?

[From The Daily Mail]

This is why I will always be an Emma Thompson super-fan: ?Being slightly mad and a bit fashion-challenged. Perhaps that?s why Ken loved us both. She?s a wonderful woman, Helena.? How g?damn generous. How classy. How? smart. Seriously, it?s so smart of Emma to think of that situation in that way. It?s not a bitch-fight or a media war. Kenneth loved them both and it was a terrible situation, and Emma is over it. Bless her.

Emma Thompson talks feminism, infidelity: 'I do think that monogamy is an odd state'
Here are some photos of Emma Thompson promoting her new Peter Rabbit book (they gave her the franchise a few years ago) in London yesterday. This new book is called The Christmas Tale Of Peter Rabbit. I love Emma?s side-projects. It would be enough that she?s simply a wonderful actress, of course, but I love that she also has these delightful little side-projects like ?taking over the Peter Rabbit franchise? and ?advocating for refugees and the adoption of refugee children.? And now there?s a new layer for ?Emma is lovely, amazing?: Emma has given a new interview where she talks candidly about how ?monogamy is an odd state.?

Monogamy in the modern day is an ?odd state?, the Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson has said, as she argues it is too easy to be ?caught by the happy-ever-after ideal?.

Thompson, star of Howards End, The Remains of the Day and Love Actually, said there could be ?other models? for romantic happiness, as she admitted relationships are ?very hard work?. Speaking during a webchat for parenting website Mumsnet, the actress suggested there could be ?another model that is three relationships over the three stages of your life?.

Thompson, who separated from Kenneth Branagh in 1995 after drifting apart, is now married to actor and producer Greg Wise. The couple have one daughter and a son; an orphan and former child soldier informally adopted from Rwanda aged 16. The actress has now answered questions from members of Mumsnet about her latest book, The Christmas Tale of Peter Rabbit, how to foster a love of reading in children, feminism and her work on-screen.

When asked about her role in film Love Actually, where her character discovers her husband is having an emotional affair with a younger colleague, Thompson said: ?That’s hard for me to imagine ? being able to have a relationship like that whilst living at home. It seems odd to me.?

?However,? she added, ?I do think that monogamy is an odd state, and actually I think it’s an odd state for women. I think that we’re locked into certain ideas and certain romantic ideals that have shaped our thinking about relationships for some time. And I do sometimes wonder about whether there are alternatives, and about whether our fury and rage and disbelief and horror about infidelity is quite realistic. I, of course, have got the t-shirt, so I understand the feelings very well but I think as I get older and think about long-term relationships, I do see that they can change.?

Thompson said she had watch ?lots? of friends in changing relationships, adding: ?We all live so long now! I sometimes wonder whether, whilst there is of course a completely wonderful monogamous model, that we’d all love because it feels safe and secure and there’s probably less work, than say another model that is three relationships over the three stages of your life. Your young life, your middle life, and your late life.?

?All I’m suggesting is that there are other models and I’m also suggesting that we’d been a little bit caught by the happy-ever-after ideal. All the fairy stories end when people get married and go off into the sunset, there are very few stories that deal with the nuts and bolts and actualities of serious relationships.?

She added: ?I think that relationships are very hard work, that we can take our eyes off the ball very easily, I think that children can be a huge strain on relationships ? it depends on what kind of relationship you have.?

The actress also spoke about misogyny in the film industry and the lack of role models for young women in a ?cult of celebrity? and ?emptiness?.

Saying she now visited schools to speak to girls, she said she had been ?taken aback and saddened? to hear how difficult it was to find ?people who are speaking with any kind of muscular integrity and intelligence? in the media. She added there was still ?a lot of misogyny in the film industry?, with older women losing jobs once they hit the menopause.

?I tend to think if you’re going to do anything in this industry you just have to be so much better than the guys, and then even if you are, there’s resentment,? she said. ?Stories about women are so rare. Films about women are so rare. We just have to keep writing them, and we just have to keep trying, whilst remaining aware of the huge challenges. I’ve travelled around a lot and spoken to a lot of women in a lot of different places and lines of work, and it seems clear to me that the world is simply not woman-friendly at the moment, and there’s a great deal of work to be done on many fronts.?

[From The Telegraph]

God, I love her. What a role model. What a queen. What a mentor. I have, as she says, ?got the t-shirt? for Emma Thompson. I believe in Emma Thompson. I worship her. As for the particulars of what she?s saying ? it?s not like she?s advocating for a whole re-do of how we think of relationships or anything. She?s basically telling women and men to be more realistic about everything, that sometimes the person you love at the age of 20 is not the person you will love at the age of 45. And that all relationships take work and it?s not a fairy tale. And then the bit about feminism and all? she?s magnificent.
