Cate Blanchett vs. Lupita Nyong?o: who looked better at the pre-Globes events?

Cate Blanchett vs. Lupita Nyong?o: who looked better at the pre-Globes events?
There were about 20 million pre-Golden Globes events in LA this weekend, and as such, at many events there were only one or two significant people attending. This is just a fashion post for those people. Cate Blanchett attended several events, which is surprising to me because I don?t see her as much of a partier or schmoozer, but maybe she?s running a quiet Oscar campaign this year. Maybe she really does want that lead actress Oscar for Blue Jasmine. Whatever?s happening, I?m glad we?re seeing more of her. This navy gown is Michael Kors ? these pics are from the AACTA International Awards on Friday.

And here?s Cate at the 2014 G?DAY USA Los Angeles Black Tie Gala last night. She wore Prabal Gurung ? Gurung does a lot of these larger prints, and it can be really hit-or-miss. If I had seen this on someone else, I probably would have hated it. Even now, I think it?s sort of beneath Blanchett. But she comes close to pulling it off.

Here?s Lupita Nyong?o at a Saturday brunch for the 2014 Film Independent Filmmaker Grant And Spirit Awards Nominees. Since it was brunch, I?ll forgive the ?dress shorts?. The whole ensemble is Peter Pilotto Resort 2014 ? not my favorite look for Lupita, but damn, she can really wear ANYTHING, can?t she?

And here?s Lupita later Saturday at the LA Film Critics Association Awards. She wore Altuzarra?s ?Marlene? dress from the Pre-Fall 2014 collection. The dress is sort of Kardashian, but I love Lupita in lighter colors ? they really pop off her skin and she looks like a goddess.

Bonus Jared Leto from the LAFCAs ? I like his outfit! I like the beard too.

And finally, we have Naomi Watts wearing a sad Marchesa pageant dress at the G?Day event. STOP WEARING MARCHESA.

Cate Blanchett Wins Big for
Enjoying the glitz and glamor of awards season, Cate Blanchett attended the AACTA International Awards in West Hollywood on Friday (January 10).

The "Blue Jasmine" star posed for pics on the red carpet in a long-sleeved, semi-sheer navy blue dress with gold-embellished heels.

At the event, the 44-year-old actress accepted the Best International Lead Actress award for her role in the film.

Taking the stage, Cate joked, "I'm Australian, so I guess it was a done deal. All I had to do was show up."

Cate Blanchett: Australians 'don't pay attention to social class'

Cate Blanchett: Australians 'don't pay attention to social class'
Cate Blanchett covers the February issue of Vogue Australia, and everyone is hoping that the real Vogue images aren?t this? orange. Maybe we just got some bad scans or something. Cate is beautiful and pale ? there?s absolutely no reason to make her look like John Boehner. Anyway, as you can imagine, Cate is still campaigning for Best Actress for her work in Blue Jasmine. A few months ago, I thought Cate was definitely going to be telling Meryl Streep to take a seat, but nowadays? I don?t know. Meryl will be some big competition, and I suspect Sandra Bullock, Judi Dench and Amy Adams will be around too. We?ll see how this plays out. Here are some highlights from the Vogue interview and a Marie Claire interview:

Cate ?isn?t scared? of growing old: ?Should I be? What for? Who would want a face that hasn’t seen or lived properly, hasn’t got any wrinkles that come with age, experience and laughter? Not me, anyway. We’re all travelling in the same direction.”

Her sons Roman, Ignatius and Dashiell: ”They are magnificent boys? If they know how to cut wood, light a fire, ride horses and will always help an old lady cross the road, then we won’t have done too badly as parents.”

Aussie pride: ”I don’t think Australians are any less pretentious than other people. But it’s true that we’re generally good company and we don’t pay attention to social class.”

Whether she brought Jasmine French home with her: “I have three sons who need me to feed them, help them with homework and chase them into bed. They are an instant reality check. They would simply not allow Jasmine French to read them a bedtime story.”

[From Contact Music & the Herald Sun]

Something about seeing the names of her sons all together makes me wonder just how down-to-earth Cate really is. I know that?s a Blanchett heresy, but seriously? Dashiell, Roman AND Ignatius?! I do like Dashiell though. Dash Upton is a great name, very English-y. That being said, Dash, Iggy and Roman have been primarily raised in England and Australia and they?re barely seen or heard of within The Celebrity Baby Industrial Complex, so chances are, they will turn out okay.

As for Cate?s continued insistence that she hasn?t had any work done? I still believe her, but I also think she might need to stop talking about it because people might think the lady doth protest too much.

Cate Blanchett's Vogue pictorial: were they trying to make her look bland'
As I previewed yesterday, Cate Blanchett covers the new issue of Vogue Mag, the January issue. I saw some sites complaining about how ?boring? it was for Vogue to give Cate her FIFTH cover, but I like that she?s gotten another one. She?s had a good year and she?s definitely going to get an Oscar nomination for Blue Jasmine, so this cover makes sense. Plus, she?s promoting her supporting role in The Monuments Men, with her buddy George Clooney.

Now, all that being said, I?ve been looking at these Craig McDean photos for a while and? I?m not really feeling this editorial. Cate is flawless ? she looks good in nearly anything, she?s aging beautifully and she?s just an awesome person. She?s also one of the most photogenic women in the world. So? is it just me or is this photoshoot really blah? It?s like they were trying to challenge themselves with ?Let?s see how boring we can make her look and see if she still pops!? Or maybe I?m overthinking it. Or maybe Vogue needed to think more about it.

You can read the cover story preview here ? all I?m getting is that Cate is not good with math or time and that her go-to name of affection is not ?honey? or ?sweetie? but ?Ace?. LOVE IT.

One more thing ? Cate is still supposed to do John Hillcoat?s new film, Triple Nine, only the dude actors in the film have changed up. It?s possible that Cate?s next film will star? Christoph Waltz (!), Chiwetel Ejiofor (!!), Michael B. Jordan (!!!) and Casey Affleck. That sounds super-interesting. Chiwetel and Cate? I want to go there.

Cate Blanchett 'having it all' as a woman: 'No one, male or female, can 'have it all?'

Cate Blanchett 'having it all' as a woman: 'No one, male or female, can 'have it all?'
Here?s a preview of the January cover of Vogue Mag ? Cate Blanchett in Celine. Eh. I mean, she?s flawless and you could put her in a burlap sack and she would be enchanting, but this cover image just seems like a let-down for Cate. It?s Vogue and it?s Blanchett! Go out on a limb and put her in something from the Alexander McQueen archives or something. Give her a hat. Sex her up. Something!

Cate also covers the January issue of Elle Canada, and that photoshoot is a lot better, at least from what I can see. The cover is sexy and dark and there?s leather. Good. You can read the full Elle Q&A here, and here are some highlights:

Elle: What is your everyday life like?

?My daily life is a movable feast. But, generally speaking, I find retreating into domestic life incredibly calming. I like the simplicity of what some people might find mundane: school lunches, cooking, walking the dog. I have ceased running the Sydney Theatre Company [her husband, Andrew Upton, is now the sole artistic director], so it?s wonderful to do just one thing at a time.?

Is it hard for you to find interesting roles?

?I?ve been very lucky to play iconic roles like Blanche DuBois, Lotte Kotte and Hedda Gabler onstage, but cinema is a different beast. You are not always able to influence the final results in the same way as you can in the theatre. So I?m not always interested in large roles onscreen. I?m more interested in making the space to keep experimenting as an actor. What?s important when you?re working on a film is that you want to work with a director who is going to collaborate with you or who is interested in what you can offer.?

What drew you to the character of Jasmine in Woody?s Blue Jasmine?

?Post-financial crisis, so many men and women have had their worlds shattered and they have fallen from grace. And, like Jasmine, they have had to look at themselves directly in the mirror and reinvent themselves and find out who they are without their social standing, without economic security. I think this story is very current. The unique thing about Jasmine, however, is that she has been a fantasist and has never had a firm grip on who she is or on reality.?

What do you find in theatre that you don?t in cinema?

?In theatre, you are directly engaged with your audience. You know whether a performance has connected with them or not, as you can feel their concentration ebbing and flowing, and that immediately influences the performances. In cinema, the only reference you have is the numbers. Success at the box office can be misleading, artistically speaking. Just because people show up, initially, doesn?t mean they necessarily leave the cinema having been thrilled by what they?ve experienced. You just don?t know how it?s played.?

How do you find the balance between work and family life?

?Like for any working parents, it?s a juggle. The wheels fall off frequently! But I think with children and career, you have to fully appreciate what you have: You can?t always achieve everything and do everything in the way you?d hoped because you?re pulled in a lot of opposing directions. I?m incredibly lucky to have a supportive, engaged partner.?

Can a woman ?have it all??

?No one, male or female, can ?have it all.? There just isn?t enough time. I think the concept puts an incredible pressure on people.?

You have three sons. Do you raise them differently?

?You mean differently to girls? Their gender is one thing, but their personalities are another thing entirely. I try to engage with who they are first and foremost, but, generally, we hope to raise them with a sense of humanity, compassion and giving back. It?s a very introspective, self-involved world in which we all live.

Are you very fashion conscious?

?I love new ideas and the restless rhythm of fashion, but I?m by no means ruled by it. My style has evolved over time, but, in the end, I think it?s probably still that same love of great tailoring. That?s why I also love Armani?s creations so much.?

Can you remember your first fashion splurge?

?My first big purchase goes back to when I was a teenager and I was coveting all those exquisitely tailored men?s suits. When I emerged from drama school with my very first paycheque, I bought an Armani suit, which I still have?and still wear! Because I think where I relate to Armani, the Armani universe really, is the timelessness of it. It?s simultaneously modern and effortless but also timeless and classic and eminently chic. I feel like I?ve always aspired to the grace, simplicity and timelessness that his designs embody.?

Do you enjoy being ?Cate Blanchett? or is it something of a poisoned chalice for you?

?I?m ?CB? most of the time, or ?Sweetheart? or ?Cate? or ?Mom.? I guess I?m only ?Cate Blanchett? in a public remote sense or when I have to sign something official. Fame can be a fairly limiting, hollow achievement unless it?s backed up by ability and substance.?

[From Elle Canada]

First of all, I had no idea she went by ?CB?. Is that a sign that Cate Blanchett belongs here at Celebitchy? Perhaps. I?ve always thought of her as, like, ?Queen Cate? or ?La Blanchett? or ?Great Cate?. But I?ll totally call her CB.

Secondly, I love ?No one, male or female, can ?have it all.?? I like that she?s not only acknowledging how impossible it is for women, but she?s painting men with the same brush too. It?s impossible to have it all. Full stop. That includes men and women.

Cate Blanchett does not want to be 'stroked & massaged like a little guinea pig'

Cate Blanchett does not want to be 'stroked & massaged like a little guinea pig'
Cate Blanchett covers the December issue of Harper?s Bazaar UK. What do you think of the cover? I love Cate, and my default setting is ?whatever Cate is doing, I will love it.? So? I think the cover is very striking and, as always, Cate looks so effortlessly chic. That being said, the cover sort of looks like Cate is standing in front of Georgina Chapman?s RUFFLEBOARD at the Marchesa studio. I?m sure Cate is wearing, like, Chanel or something, but the background just looks so budget and Marchesa. Which brings me to an interesting question: is Cate Blanchett?s inherent style and chicness so all-encompassing that she would be the one woman in the world who could pull off a Marchesa gown? It?s not that we really need to contemplate this because of course she would never. RIGHT?!

As for this Bazaar UK interview, the UK site already published a lengthy excerpt ? you can read it here. It?s actually a conversation between Cate, the Bazaar interviewer and Woody Allen. I?m reminded once again of something rather strange ? Woody Allen really wants Cate to get nominated for everything for Blue Jasmine. Woody rarely does any press for his films, much less press for the actors in his films. He must really adore Cate. It?s actually a difficult piece to try to excerpt from, so it?s best to just read the whole thing ? Woody plays the curmudgeon and Cate plays the enigma/diva. It?s actually kind of cool piece.

Cate on Woody?s social awkwardness: ?It is funny because I often feel the only way to have something to talk about with someone is to work together. Then at least you?ve got something to discuss?. Well, when you cast me, I was lucky because I lived so far away and we could keep it brief on the phone. We didn?t even have to see one another.?

Cate on Woody?s directing style: ?What I really welcomed was that if you didn?t like something, you?d say it. What happens a lot in film, though not so much in the theatre, is that you get stroked and sort of massaged, like a little guinea pig. Whereas you?re very clear. I don?t know whether it?s your history in stand-up; it works or it doesn?t work, it?s interesting or it?s boring. Is that easier when you?re acting in a film, because you can feel it from the inside??

Woody didn?t realize how the costume designer got all of those amazing clothes: ?I was shocked to learn by reading in The New York Times that the costume designer on Blue Jasmine, Suzy Benzinger, had a budget of only $35,000 for every costume in the film. I knew the budget was limited, but I had no idea.?

Cate on the wardrobe: ?The Herms bag I was carrying was worth more than her whole budget, and there I was, throwing it on the sidewalk again and again. I felt her blood pressure go up every time it hit the pavement. We borrowed it. But the waiting list for those bags is decades. You?re in wheelchairs before they arrive. I think I borrowed the PR girl?s bag, but I didn?t find that out until I?d thrown it on the sidewalk for the seventh time.?

Cate on the hardest part of filmmaking: ?For me, publicity is the hardest. I was trying to explain to someone yesterday that the decisions you make as an actor have to be instinctual, it has to come alive between you and the other actors. Maybe because I am a goldfish, when a shoot ends I leave behind the reasons I?ve done what I have done. To come back six months later and dredge all that stuff up for publicity is difficult.?

Cate?s work choices: ?After I had children, I think by necessity I became a lot more economical in the way that I worked. My first question when my agent calls is: ?Who?s directing and when are they shooting?? I always ask: ?How long do they need me?? Which sounds banal, but it helps keep you rational. Like you were saying, you shoot in the school holidays. Of course, my children?s summer holidays are entirely different, as we live in the hemisphere that fills Woody with horror: that hot, faraway, long-haul hemisphere. Nothing fills Woody with more terror? But children are hilarious. My children were very impressed when I became a piece of Lego [for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull]. I warned them there wouldn?t be any merchandise from Blue Jasmine.?

[From Harper?s Bazaar UK]

There?s so much more at that link ? Woody talking about his kids with Soon-Yi, how he keeps his life compartmentalized, how one of Soon-Yi?s stories (about one of her friends) was the inspiration for Blue Jasmine. It?s clear that Woody and Cate really do have an interesting, friendly relationship. And he wants her to win the Oscar for his film. I wonder? does Woody?s vocal support mean much to Cate?s Oscar campaign? We?ll have to see how Meryl Streep?s campaign pans out.

Also – I love Cate’s imagery. “Stroked like a little guinea pig” and “because I’m such a goldfish” etc. I LOVE HER. I would stroke her like a guinea pig.

Cate Blanchett in pale pink Armani Prive at the NYFF: gorgeous or unflattering?
Here are some photos of the always lovely and pale Cate Blanchett at last night?s NY Film Festival. She flew into NYC from London especially for this ? a gala tribute in her honor, a tribute for her decades and a half of extraordinary work. It doesn?t hurt that many people feel she?s the ?one to beat? for this year?s Best Actress Oscar race. Cate wore this pale Pink Armani Prive dress and Roger Vivier heels. I could do without the nude heels, quite honestly. Duchess Kate has ruined nude heels for me, although Kate isn?t the only one who over-works the nude heel (Angelina Jolie is another one). As for pale girls wearing pale colors? imagine how stunning this dress would have been in red or even gold. Yes, this washes her out but then again, she?s Cate Blanchett and she can do whatever she wants.

Alec Baldwin toasted his Blue Jasmine costar at the gala tribute and Woody Allen sent in a video praising her talents. I know many of you loathe Woody but when it comes to Cate?s Oscar race, I find it fascinating that Woody seems to be going above and beyond to support Cate?s chances. Usually, Woody wouldn?t be bothered to support his actors, but he?s putting some effort into Cate?s Oscar race. She also did a Q&A which went something like this:

Reflecting on her work at the Q&A, Blanchett was generally self-deprecating and funny in response to questions from soft-spoken Jones. They discussed, among other things, theater versus film acting (“I never expected to make a movie,” she said); her big-screen debut, at the age of 18, as an extra in an Egyptian film for which she was offered a small amount of money and falafel (“The falafel never came, so I left”); the pressure of playing Hollywood legend Hepburn (“Well, she died and she couldn’t play that role, and I was the schmuck who got that job”); and the biggest hits of which she was a part (“I didn’t know how to be an elf before I arrived in New Zealand” for The Lord of the Rings trilogy) — even if her son recently asked her, “Mom, when are you gonna make a blockbuster?”

The cineastes in the audience were particularly interested to hear about Blanchett’s experience working with mysterious Terrence Malick on the recently-wrapped Knight of Cups. “It was a cross between cinema, philosophy, poetry and a quasi religious experience,” she said. “It was certainly an extraordinary experience.” She continued, “He kept saying he wanted ‘to catch life on the wing,’” adding, “You weren’t so much playing characters as you were states of being.”

When audience members were eventually invited to ask questions of Blanchett, one asked her to name her favorite acting experience. She was initially reluctant, but said, “gun to my head,” that Gross und Klein, a German play in which she appeared in 2012, was her favorite in the theater, and that Blue Jasmine was her favorite on a film. Of the latter she said, “It felt like it was a culmination of my work in theater and my work in film, so it was satisfying on a number of different levels.”

[From THR]

“Mom, when are you gonna make a blockbuster?” That?s so funny. She does do these artsy little projects that usually don?t make money, but she?s been in some big movies too! She did LOTR and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Her cinematic taste isn?t JUST little art films, is what I?m saying.

Cate Blanchett Honored with New York Film Festival Gala Tribute
Heading out to accept a special honor, Cate Blanchett arrived at the Gala Tribute to her at the New York Film Festival at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center on Wednesday (October 2).

The "Elizabeth" star looked gorgeous in a pale peach lacy dress that seemed to match her skin tone as she posed for photos outside.

In a statement the Film Society said that she and Ralph Fiennes, who will also accept an honor on October 9th, are among the artists "who have made significant artistic contributions to film culture in the past and will continue to do so in the future."

Currently, there's Oscar buzz around Cate for her role in "Blue Jasmine," a Woody Allen film about a troubled New York socialite who arrives in San Francisco to stay with her sister.

Cate Blanchett in a weirdly caped Givenchy at UK premiere: lovely or budget?
Yay! I get so giddy whenever I get to write about Cate Blanchett. I?m just excited to see her, and there?s so much pleasurable anticipation for months of Blanchett photo-ops ahead of us. She will get an Oscar nomination for Blue Jasmine, I?m sure. Whether she will win, that?s still up in the air. But won?t it be fun to see her campaign? We haven?t had a good Blanchett fashion show/Oscar campaign in several years now. She hasn?t had any major nominations since 2008, maybe a little into 2009 with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Yay!

Anyway, these are some photos of Blanchett at last night? UK premiere of Blue Jasmine. As you can see, Cate wore this completely? odd… Givenchy. It?s Givenchy Fall 2012, so it?s a few seasons old already, yet I don?t remember seeing this on anyone before now. Think of it this way ? this would look terrible on every one of the girls who wear Givenchy these days (Kim Kardashian, Beyonce). But on Cate? it sort of works? It has some kind of weird, built-in cape that seems bejeweled. Cate?s shoulders are beautiful. And her face is exquisite.

While she was promoting Blue Jasmine in London, Cate discussed the state of politics, specifically women in politics and the politicization of women:

Cate Blanchett has told Sky News she has ruled out going into politics, although she is concerned that a “wave of conservatism sweeping the globe” is affecting the role of women in society.

The Australian is in London to promote her new film, Blue Jasmine, directed by Woody Allen. He is famous for making muses of his leading ladies but Blanchett, who describes herself as a feminist, believes equality for women has yet to be achieved.

“I’m reading a book by Ann Summers called The Misogyny Factor, and I feel that all of the steps forward that we’ve made … a lot of those have been rescinded,” she said. “Conservatism is affecting the way women perceive who they are in the world.”

When asked about the sexism scandal involving Australia’s former prime minister Julia Gillard, the actress said: “Whether you admire her as a politician or not, as a woman and out of respect for the office of the Prime Minister, how she was treated was quite shocking.”

[From Sky News]

Has a ?wave of conservatism? really swept the globe? Eh. With issues of feminism, it often feels like one step forward, two steps back, but is the world more radically conservation and/or radically anti-woman right at this moment than, say, five years ago? Ten years ago? There are cracks in the glass ceiling and I?m hopeful. That being said, now I kind of want to read The Misogyny Factor. Maybe that will be our second Celebitchy Book Club Selection after we finish reading A Visit From the Goon Squad? (By the way, we?ll be reviewing and discussing our first selection on October 6th.)

Here’s a photo of Cate in Tom Ford, leaving the Tom Ford show during London Fashion Week a few days ago.

Cate Blanchett Brings
Paving the way for international box office success, Cate Blanchett attended the UK premiere of "Blue Jasmine" at the Odeon West End in London on Tuesday (September 17).

The "Elizabeth" star looked gorgeous in a long black gown with sparkling bronze decoration as she bared her shoulders for photos.

Currently in theaters in the States, the film follows a New York socialite, deeply troubled and in denial, who arrives in San Francisco to impose upon her sister.

Written and directed by Woody Allen, the dramedy co-stars Alec Baldwin, Sally Hawkins, Max Rutherford, and Andrew Dice Clay.
