I?m not sure what Cate Blanchett is promoting in this new Marie Claire interview. She doesn?t have a film coming out in the immediate future, although she will have some new releases in the fall/winter. Perhaps she?s promoting her endorsement deal with Armani? That could be it. That?s the new thing for celebrities ? they promote their modeling contracts like they promote their films. The pay is probably about the same too, and it?s much less work. Anyway, La Blanchett?s ?20 Questions? with Marie Claire is charming. Up to a point. She crosses a line into utter grossness though when describing her favorite food.
1. What brings you the greatest joy? Watching my children sleep.
2. What brings you the greatest satisfaction? Surviving opening night.
3. What is the best gift you’ve ever received? A painting by Mavis Ngallametta.
4. What charities do you support? The Australian Wildlife Conservancy, the Australian Conservation Foundation, Sydney Children’s Hospital, and Biennale of Sydney.
5. What is your greatest indulgence? Fragrance.
6. What is on your perennial to-do list? Tackle the mess in our attic.
7. What is on your bucket list? Take up figure drawing; visit the Antarctic and Greenland.
8. What is on your bookshelf? Anne Summers’ The Misogyny Factor and Roland Barthes’ A Lover’s Discourse: Fragments.
9. Who is on the guest list for your ideal dinner party? Amy Poehler, Julian Schnabel, Steven Soderbergh, Tim Flannery, Hillary Clinton, Christine Lagarde, and Elaine Stritch.
10. What makes you laugh? This question.
11. What makes you cry? The missing schoolgirls in Nigeria.
12. What item in your closet do you wear the most? My Acne boots.
13. What is your beauty secret? Sunscreen.
14. What splurge is well worth it? A kayak.
15. What do you never leave home without? Lipstick and wet wipes.
16. What is your favorite food? Cheese and Vegemite on toast.
17. What movie has the greatest ending? Brief Encounter.
18. What song instantly puts you in a good mood? “Proof” by I Am Kloot.
19. How did you make your first dollar? Working in the kitchen of an old-age home in high school.
20. What is the best advice you’ve ever been given? Follow your nose.
[From Marie Claire]
Cheese and Vegemite on toast? NOOoooo. That sounds so gross. I guess that?s where Cate gets her Aussie cred though ? Aussies love their Vegemite. Is that a controversial statement? Is it bad form to make some kind of sweeping generalization about what one nationality likes to eat? Italians love pasta. The Brits love fish & chips (and Indian food). The Swiss love chocolate. The French love croissants. And Aussies love Vegemite. I feel like the Aussies got the short end of the stick, national-food-wise.
I do love her answer about ideal dinner party guests ? who knew she was a fan of Amy Poehler? Hollywood needs to make that happen ? a buddy film with Cate and Amy.

| Cate Blanchett to star in a movie about George W. Bush's National Guard records | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

|
Back in 2004, CBS News anchor Dan Rather was already known as something as a wild card. But his decades of journalistic integrity got turned around within the span of a week when he and CBS News producer Mary Mapes did a story on then-first-term president George W. Bush?s National Guard records. The scandal was known by many names ? ?The Killian Documents Controversy? or ?Rather-gate.? The crux of the scandal was that Rather used some old documents from the early 1970s to show that Bush?s National Guard records were less than stellar, that his father had used his political influence to keep Dubya out of Vietnam and that Dubya had been very close to getting kicked out of the National Guard for insubordination, going MIA, failure to report for duty and on and on.
Conservative blogs and many mainstream outlets questioned the authenticity of the documentation used by CBS. Many said the documents looked forged and there was a lot of Twihard-proofing (before Twihard-proofing was a thing) of the whole situation. Mary Mapes ended up being fired by CBS and Rather?s career took a major hit. But, for what it?s worth, Rather stood by the story for the most part, and over the past years, he?s even double-downed on the reporting, save for the questionable documentation. Long-term, Rather and Mapes might have been (mostly) correct too. So, why this trip down memory lane? Because they?re making a movie about this whole situation. Starring Cate Blanchett as Mapes and Robert Redford as Rather. YES TAKE MY MONEY NOW.
Robert Redford is attached to play CBS News icon Dan Rather and Cate Blanchett is attached to play his producer Mary Mapes in Truth, a film that will mark the directorial debut of James Vanderbilt, the A-list screenwriter behind the first two installments of The Amazing Spider-Man. The film will explore the scandal that erupted after Rather reported on 60 Minutes II that George W. Bush had gotten preferential treatment that put him in the National Guard to avoid the Vietnam War draft. The ensuing scandal during Bush?s reelection campaign left Mapes fired and Rather?s storied reputation in tatters.
Vanderbilt is adapting Mapes? 2005 memoir Truth And Duty: The Press, The President, And The Privilege Of Power. They are eyeing a fall start, so this is all moving on a fast track. The project has not yet been set at a studio, but I expect it will not take long.
Shortly after they uncovered evidence of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib, CBS News producer Mapes and former CBS News anchor Rather thought they found the story of their careers as Bush?s reelection campaign was getting underway and he was facing competition from Democratic candidate and Vietnam vet John Kerry. The story, based on documents purportedly from the files of Bush?s deceased National Guard commanding officer, alleged that the president?s powerful father, then an ambassador and future president, made calls to put him atop the list for the Texas Air National Guard. The aim was to keep his son from having to fight in Vietnam after he graduated from Yale in 1968. The docs came from a retired lieutenant colonel with the Texas Army National Guard. The story prompted an outcry of criticism from Conservative corners and the pressure spurred an internal CBS investigation into whether the documents were forgeries.
Mapes, who?d worked in TV news 25 years and won the Peabody Award, was subsequently fired for what the network called lapses in judgment. Strangely, the Bush campaign actually benefited from the scandal. His campaign exploited Kerry?s military service by getting some of his former soldiers to speak against him?a move now called ?Swiftboating? in campaign circles?and it helped Bush win reelection. Mapes maintained her belief that the documents were real, and that she and Rather were done in by a right-wing internet smear campaign that put the focus on ?Rathergate? instead of the issue of whether the president benefited from his father?s powerful relationships to avoid service in Vietnam.
[From Deadline]
Putting aside the politics for a moment, can I just say? damn, this sounds like a great movie? Robert Redford as Dan Rather is a brilliant stroke of stunt-casting and Cate Blanchett as a tough and maligned news producer? YES. She?ll be doing an American accent again. Just like she did for the roles that got her two Oscars. Perhaps I?ll be the first to say it: Cate Blanchett is totally going to get an Oscar nomination for this.
Incidentally, this whole thing reminds me of another great movie about CBS?s newsroom culture ? The Insider. That?s another great movie with another great actor playing an iconic CBS newsman: Christopher Plummer as Mike Wallace. Perfection. And, oh yeah, Pacino and Crowe, both of whom act their asses off.

While Cate Blanchett?s costars were premiering How To Train Your Dragon 2 in LA yesterday, Cate was in Australia to premiere the film at the Sydney Film Festival. She was the only one there! But it was nice. All you need in this world in La Blanchett. For the life of me, I cannot find the designer ID on this rather matronly dress. Update: It’s Chanel, thanks you guys. I dislike it ? the sleeves are weird and that button detail on the skirt is awful. Not even the Duchess of Buttons would not even wear this. What?s going on with Blanchett? Usually she knocks it out of the park. Her face looks beautiful though ? and I believe that she hasn?t had anything done. Ever. That?s her real, untouched face.
Cate is very pleased with the film though ? this is the first time she?s ever done voice work in an animate film, and she told reporters: ?It was an extraordinary process working for three years with the most extraordinary animators … it was very special? And I?m finally in 3D!?

| Cate Blanchett wears Givenchy, plays with a dragon in Cannes: perfect or blah? | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

I could pretty much watch Cate Blanchett interacting with a giant dragon for the rest of my life. These are pics of Cate and the cast of How To Train Your Dragon 2 on the red carpet at Cannes. Cate is the only one who really posed with the giant dragon on the red carpet. She stroked him, she leaned on him, she rubbed his chin, she gazed admiringly at him, she flirted with him. Look at these photos and tell me La Blanchett doesn?t need a giant dragon on every red carpet from here on out.
Cate wore Givenchy. I have to wonder about her loyalty to the House of Givenchy even now that Kim Kardashian is wearing Givenchy on the reg. Does Cate even know what a ?Kim Kardashian? is? Or does Cate just wear whatever she wants and she doesn?t give an eff what anyone thinks? For the record, I like this? from the front. The back is not great (I loathe that illusion netting stuff). But the front part? those look like scales. Like, dragon scales. Hot.
While doing promotion in Cannes, Cate took a moment to bash the idea of women ?having it all? and the journalists who perpetuate that line of questioning. Cate said, in part:
?It’s certainly a question that’s never asked of men. The question is only ever directed towards of women. ?How do you balance? How do you have it all?? When anyone plays a mother on film, there is a whole raft of judgment in that a mother is a particular archetype or that every mother is the same. That’s complete rubbish. We did discuss a lot about that particular issue because of course there is a judgment on how women parent. The film actually deals with it really beautifully and deeply and emotionally.?
And Ms Blanchett criticised the constant fixation with a woman?s age or beauty, at the expense of more pertinent issues.
?We live in a world where there is still not equal pay for equal work. I still don’t understand in 2014 why that is the case. I’m not just talking about the industry in which we work, it’s every industry. I’m an actress at a film festival. I can cope with the questions, I’m a big girl. But it does surprise me that we’re still asking those questions.?
[From The Independent]
Word.
Meanwhile, Cate?s costar America Ferrera was ?pranked? by that douchebag Vitalii Sediuk, the Ukrainian ?journalist? who runs onto red carpets and accosts (re: assaults) celebrities. He was the guy who wouldn?t let go of Bradley Cooper and he was the guy who got slapped by Will Smith. On this red carpet, Sediuk got on the ground, lifted up America?s dress and stuck his head under it. What I like about the photos is that Cate seems extremely protective of America ? you can see Cate holding on tightly to America?s wrist, and it looks like Cate is comforting her.

Here are some photos from the Cannes Film Festival photocall for How To Train Your Dragon 2. You know what?s surprising? Gerard Butler is back to doing voice work for this film, yet he didn?t come to Cannes to promote it. Huh. I?m sure there?s a story there. In the meantime? Cate Blanchett. She has come to Cannes to save us from all the Blake Livelys and Zoe Saldanas of the world. At the photocall, Cate wore this straight-off-the-runway ensemble from Delpozo. Thoughts? La Blanchett can do anything. I like this for what it is ? a smart, interesting, business-casual look.
Cate was joined at the photocall by Jay Baruchel, Djimon Hounsou, America Ferrera and Kit Harington, all of whom do voice work for the animated film. Is this Kit?s first Cannes? I think it might be.
And here are some photos of Cate at last night?s Chopard event in Cannes. She wore Valentino. I?m not crazy about the high neck, but since it?s Blanchett? yeah, she pulls this off.

| Cate Blanchett in bejeweled Armani at the Oscars: gorgeous or too fussy? | Added 11 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

It?s been? how long? Twelve hours or so since I first saw Cate Blanchett in this Armani gown, and I still don?t know how I feel about it. I think? ??? On anyone else, I probably would have judged this gown harshly. But because it?s La Blanchett, I?m examining my feelings more closely because I don?t want to hate it. In motion, the effect was that Armani had simply glued jewels onto Cate?s naked body. But in still photos, you can make out more of the details. There are pearls and discs and crystals and beads, all attached to a nude netting.
I guess I like it?? I don?t love it, but I also don?t think it?s a ?bad? dress. I hoped for some huge dress drama from Cate, like the dress would be super-controversial and we would be fighting about it all day. I?ll say this: I think I like the top part much more than the skirt. Something about the skirt is throwing off the look, right? And I?ll give Cate credit for having flawless hair and makeup. I think this is the prettiest her hair is ever looked. PS? Cate?s jewelry is Chopard. Her huge earrings were opals set in white gold. Lupita wore opals too ? she had an opal ring.
And here?s Cate?s competition, Meryl Streep. Meryl wore Lanvin. Thoughts? I feel like Meryl has no f?ks to give and absolutely nothing to prove. She wore a dress that she thought would be flattering and comfortable, and that?s what we got. It?s not high-fashion. It wasn?t meant to be. I do love Meryl and her husband Don Gummer together though ? they?re such a handsome couple!

Maybe this is anticlimactic, but there was no way that Cate Blanchett was NOT going to win the Oscar tonight. I mean, there were a few weeks there where it looked like anyone associated with Woody Allen was going to be shunned, but it seems like Hollywood was happy enough to separate the Woody issue from Cate Blanchett. So, our queen was crowned once again. This is Cate?s second Oscar (she won supporting actress in 2005 for The Aviator) and her first lead-actress Oscar.
Cate got a great standing ovation (totally deserved it too) and she joked to the audience, “you’re too old to be standing.” She talked for a while but it went quickly. She said something about the award being “random and subjective” and she honored her fellow nominees with generosity (except for Julia Roberts – Cate told Julia to “suck it”). She uttered the name “Woody Allen” on stage and that got applause, surprisingly. My favorite part is her complete admonishment of the idea that films that center around women are somehow “niche” films that don’t make money. Well… she looked beautiful and the award was well-deserved and I’m happy for her. Congrats, Cate!

I was just struck by a weird thought ? do you think anyone ever refers to Cate Blanchett as ?Cat? or ?Catie?? No. Kitty-Cat? Never! She just Cate. Or Great Cate. Or La Blanchett. Or The Queen. Well, our Queen picked up her millionth Best Actress award last night at the Spirits. It really is a total wipeout ? I can?t think of any actress who has ruled the awards season so completely in recent memory. Cate?s fashion game is back on track too ? she wore this interesting Roksanda Ilincic dress which I can?t stop looking at. Is the gold belt part of the original design or was it (as I suspect) an addition by Cate? I like this look on Cate and I think it?s totally appropriate for the Spirit Awards. If I had to mess with anything, I think I would have made the whole dress that shade of brown/burgundy and turquoise and not have had any of the beige fabric. The dress works beautifully from the front, but it?s a snooze in the back. Queen Cate deserves better.
Here?s Elisabeth Moss in an Alexander McQueen dress with a Chloe blazer. I would have liked to see the dress without the blazer. The blazer is what ruins the look for me. But from the neck up, Lizzie Moss has never looked better. PS? she jammed her feet into those heels, didn?t she?
Angela Bassett looks incredible. Good God. I don?t have the designer ID, but this works.

| Cate Blanchett in fringed Valentino at the Rodeo Drive event: tablecloth chic? | Added 11 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

OH NOES. Here are some photos from last night?s event for ?The Rodeo Drive Committee Inducts Catherine Martin Into The Rodeo Drive Walk Of Style.? Yeah, I?m not sure what that means except that Cate Blanchett was there for her friend and fellow Aussie Catherine Martin. Catherine, like Cate, is up for an Oscar this year. Martin is nominated for The Great Gatsby ? she does the costumes on all of her husband?s movies (she?s married to Baz Luhrmann).
Anyway, for the event, La Blanchett wore this absolutely mind-bogglingly terrible Valentino gown. Can we even call this a ?gown?? Or is more of a re-worked tablecloth with FRINGE? Seriously, someone at Valentino was visiting their mom and they saw the mom?s tablecloth and they thought, ?OMG, fabulous.? I guess it?s supposed to have a southwest/prairie feel, but coming from Valentino, that just seems patronizing. I guess the good thing here is that it looks like Blanchett got her sparkle back. She had a bad few weeks but I?m glad she?s out and about and doing events for Oscar weekend.
I like Anne V?s dress more than her hair. She?s needs to do something different with the hair, for sure, but the dress is sort of like? bee-chic.
Here?s Georgina Chapman in one of her own Marchesa designs. Surprisingly, she doesn?t look too bad in this design. Of course, the dress does have that Marchesa cheapness look.
And here?s little Kiernan Shipka, always looking adorable and appropriate. She?s so stylish! I hope she got to meet Blanchett.

| Cate Blanchett in Alexander McQueen at the BAFTAs: gorgeous or not great? | Added 11 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

As I mentioned in the BAFTA wrap-up post, Cate Blanchett?s Best Actress reign is currently undeterred. She took home the BAFTA for her role in Blue Jasmine and she accepted her award without ever uttering the name ?Woody Allen?. Cate took a break from the campaign trail and the promotional trail for the last two weeks, so the BAFTAs were her big return to the spotlight. The official excuse was that she was grieving for Philip Seymour Hoffman, but Cate was also keeping a low profile with the Woody Allen/Dylan Farrow situation exploding on every news site and blog.
For her big return, Cate chose one of her favorite fashion houses, Alexander McQueen. This dress is simple and conservative (for Cate), and I really like it on her. It?s a great dress for the BAFTAs ? a nice cap sleeve gown in black, but enough pattern and styling steeze to make it interesting. Take a gander at her crazy necklace! PS? Bonus Tom Hardy.
Emma Thompson was also nominated and she attended the show AND presented. She wore this Maria Grachvogel dress which looks fantastic on her. I wouldn?t have thought to put her in such a classic red dress, but it works. I even like her Tilda Swinton-esque flyaway hair.
