| Cate Blanchett in pale pink Armani Prive at the NYFF: gorgeous or unflattering? | Added 11 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Here are some photos of the always lovely and pale Cate Blanchett at last night?s NY Film Festival. She flew into NYC from London especially for this ? a gala tribute in her honor, a tribute for her decades and a half of extraordinary work. It doesn?t hurt that many people feel she?s the ?one to beat? for this year?s Best Actress Oscar race. Cate wore this pale Pink Armani Prive dress and Roger Vivier heels. I could do without the nude heels, quite honestly. Duchess Kate has ruined nude heels for me, although Kate isn?t the only one who over-works the nude heel (Angelina Jolie is another one). As for pale girls wearing pale colors? imagine how stunning this dress would have been in red or even gold. Yes, this washes her out but then again, she?s Cate Blanchett and she can do whatever she wants.
Alec Baldwin toasted his Blue Jasmine costar at the gala tribute and Woody Allen sent in a video praising her talents. I know many of you loathe Woody but when it comes to Cate?s Oscar race, I find it fascinating that Woody seems to be going above and beyond to support Cate?s chances. Usually, Woody wouldn?t be bothered to support his actors, but he?s putting some effort into Cate?s Oscar race. She also did a Q&A which went something like this:
Reflecting on her work at the Q&A, Blanchett was generally self-deprecating and funny in response to questions from soft-spoken Jones. They discussed, among other things, theater versus film acting (“I never expected to make a movie,” she said); her big-screen debut, at the age of 18, as an extra in an Egyptian film for which she was offered a small amount of money and falafel (“The falafel never came, so I left”); the pressure of playing Hollywood legend Hepburn (“Well, she died and she couldn’t play that role, and I was the schmuck who got that job”); and the biggest hits of which she was a part (“I didn’t know how to be an elf before I arrived in New Zealand” for The Lord of the Rings trilogy) — even if her son recently asked her, “Mom, when are you gonna make a blockbuster?”
The cineastes in the audience were particularly interested to hear about Blanchett’s experience working with mysterious Terrence Malick on the recently-wrapped Knight of Cups. “It was a cross between cinema, philosophy, poetry and a quasi religious experience,” she said. “It was certainly an extraordinary experience.” She continued, “He kept saying he wanted ‘to catch life on the wing,’” adding, “You weren’t so much playing characters as you were states of being.”
When audience members were eventually invited to ask questions of Blanchett, one asked her to name her favorite acting experience. She was initially reluctant, but said, “gun to my head,” that Gross und Klein, a German play in which she appeared in 2012, was her favorite in the theater, and that Blue Jasmine was her favorite on a film. Of the latter she said, “It felt like it was a culmination of my work in theater and my work in film, so it was satisfying on a number of different levels.”
[From THR]
“Mom, when are you gonna make a blockbuster?” That?s so funny. She does do these artsy little projects that usually don?t make money, but she?s been in some big movies too! She did LOTR and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Her cinematic taste isn?t JUST little art films, is what I?m saying.

Heading out to accept a special honor, Cate Blanchett arrived at the Gala Tribute to her at the New York Film Festival at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center on Wednesday (October 2).
The "Elizabeth" star looked gorgeous in a pale peach lacy dress that seemed to match her skin tone as she posed for photos outside.
In a statement the Film Society said that she and Ralph Fiennes, who will also accept an honor on October 9th, are among the artists "who have made significant artistic contributions to film culture in the past and will continue to do so in the future."
Currently, there's Oscar buzz around Cate for her role in "Blue Jasmine," a Woody Allen film about a troubled New York socialite who arrives in San Francisco to stay with her sister.

| Cate Blanchett in a weirdly caped Givenchy at UK premiere: lovely or budget? | Added 11 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Yay! I get so giddy whenever I get to write about Cate Blanchett. I?m just excited to see her, and there?s so much pleasurable anticipation for months of Blanchett photo-ops ahead of us. She will get an Oscar nomination for Blue Jasmine, I?m sure. Whether she will win, that?s still up in the air. But won?t it be fun to see her campaign? We haven?t had a good Blanchett fashion show/Oscar campaign in several years now. She hasn?t had any major nominations since 2008, maybe a little into 2009 with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Yay!
Anyway, these are some photos of Blanchett at last night? UK premiere of Blue Jasmine. As you can see, Cate wore this completely? odd… Givenchy. It?s Givenchy Fall 2012, so it?s a few seasons old already, yet I don?t remember seeing this on anyone before now. Think of it this way ? this would look terrible on every one of the girls who wear Givenchy these days (Kim Kardashian, Beyonce). But on Cate? it sort of works? It has some kind of weird, built-in cape that seems bejeweled. Cate?s shoulders are beautiful. And her face is exquisite.
While she was promoting Blue Jasmine in London, Cate discussed the state of politics, specifically women in politics and the politicization of women:
Cate Blanchett has told Sky News she has ruled out going into politics, although she is concerned that a “wave of conservatism sweeping the globe” is affecting the role of women in society.
The Australian is in London to promote her new film, Blue Jasmine, directed by Woody Allen. He is famous for making muses of his leading ladies but Blanchett, who describes herself as a feminist, believes equality for women has yet to be achieved.
“I’m reading a book by Ann Summers called The Misogyny Factor, and I feel that all of the steps forward that we’ve made … a lot of those have been rescinded,” she said. “Conservatism is affecting the way women perceive who they are in the world.”
When asked about the sexism scandal involving Australia’s former prime minister Julia Gillard, the actress said: “Whether you admire her as a politician or not, as a woman and out of respect for the office of the Prime Minister, how she was treated was quite shocking.”
[From Sky News]
Has a ?wave of conservatism? really swept the globe? Eh. With issues of feminism, it often feels like one step forward, two steps back, but is the world more radically conservation and/or radically anti-woman right at this moment than, say, five years ago? Ten years ago? There are cracks in the glass ceiling and I?m hopeful. That being said, now I kind of want to read The Misogyny Factor. Maybe that will be our second Celebitchy Book Club Selection after we finish reading A Visit From the Goon Squad? (By the way, we?ll be reviewing and discussing our first selection on October 6th.)
Here’s a photo of Cate in Tom Ford, leaving the Tom Ford show during London Fashion Week a few days ago.

Paving the way for international box office success, Cate Blanchett attended the UK premiere of "Blue Jasmine" at the Odeon West End in London on Tuesday (September 17).
The "Elizabeth" star looked gorgeous in a long black gown with sparkling bronze decoration as she bared her shoulders for photos.
Currently in theaters in the States, the film follows a New York socialite, deeply troubled and in denial, who arrives in San Francisco to impose upon her sister.
Written and directed by Woody Allen, the dramedy co-stars Alec Baldwin, Sally Hawkins, Max Rutherford, and Andrew Dice Clay.

| Cate Blanchett goes without eyebrows for AnOther Mag: enchanting or terrible? | Added 11 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

OH NOES. What happened to Cate Blanchett?! These are photos from Cate?s AnOther Magazine editorial, and I guess some stylist/makeup artist/photographer thought it would be cool or avant-garde to photograph Cate looking like some animal chewed off most of her eyebrows. Cate usually has some of the most amazing skin ever, so I?m at a loss to explain why she looks so corpsey and? not good. This shoot is horrible, right? I mean, I?m all for getting actors to step out of their comfort zone for an interesting photo shoot, but there is NOTHING attractive in these pics. That being said, they could have been so much worse, I suppose. Oh, I guess I should note that these photos are an homage to ?1920s androgynous cabaret performer Anita Berber.? Sure.
Cate is promoting Blue Jasmine, which will probably earn her a second Oscar this year. She really threw down the gauntlet for actresses this awards season. Meryl Streep will be likely be challenging her, and maybe Amy Adams too?? But right now I think it might be all about Cate. Here are some highlights from her AnOther interview:
Cate said: ?I have this thing on film where I do die quite a lot. And I suddenly realised, I was always dying on my birthday.
?I played an Irish journalist, Veronica Guerin, in a film that about two and a half people saw ? usually two to three people see the films that I make ? and I was sitting on a highway doing this scene where she got shot and it was my birthday. Then I got beaten up in another experience on film the next year on my birthday. And later I made a film with David Fincher called The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and I died then too, on my birthday, on a hospital bed ? and that was a relief.?
Blanchett, about to appear in Woody Allen?s new comedy drama Blue Jasmine, would like to double the size of her brood to six, despite her home life being ?chaos?. She and her playwright husband Andrew Upton have three sons ? Dashiell, 11, Roman, nine, and five-year-old Ignatius. She said: ?I?d have three more. It?s the chaos of it. I love it. I am so unhappy being away from them. They are so funny and wicked.?
[From The Standard]
I like how blas she is about how under-watched some of her films are. I?ll admit it, I never say Veronica Guerin, although I do remember that she received good reviews for that one. As for her desire to expand her brood? she wants six kids just like Brad and Angelina? Maybe she?s longing for at least one girl in a family of boys? She should adopt!
Here?s AnOther?s behind-the-scenes video. Hilariously, this sounds like p0rn music, right?

| Cate Blanchett in a Christian Dior tent dress in Deauville: amazing or awful? | Added 11 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

OMG. Seriously. Cate Blanchett walked the red carpet at the Deauville Film Festival for the premiere of Blue Jasmine and THIS was what she wore. Not to be confused with the Armani Prive dress she wore to Venice opening ceremony/event, which had problems of course, but nothing like this. Again, I would have a total hate-on for this Dior gown if it was anyone other than Cate. On Cate, it?s? interesting? It?s an intellectual look. As in, you have to really think about whether you like it, whether this is ?good?, whether this is fashionable. It?s basically a maternity-style tent dress, only done in a hand-worked couture way. The top of the gown fits her perfectly. But she has such a great figure, and I don?t get why she wanted to do this. Maybe she likes being an intellectual fashionista. One thing’s for sure: La Blanchett will be the most interesting woman to watch this awards season.
More photos from Deauville? Dakota Fanning in Elie Saab (the blue gown) and Alexander McQueen (the beige minidress). I hate both looks on Dakota for different reasons. For the McQueen, it would have been cute on Dakota if it was another color. She really should stay away from beiges, whites, creams and the like. As for the Elie Saab? on another woman, it would have been a boring but inoffensive look. But I hate it on Dakota! She didn?t style it correctly ? she looks like a 12-year-old wearing her mother?s stuffy gown. Is Dakota even wearing makeup?!
Michael Douglas is in Deauville to promote Beyond the Candelabra, and the critics LOVED it. Michael was also wearing his wedding ring, so the press is making a big deal about that.
And Dame Judi Dench, just because I love her.

Tending to some duties surrounding her latest film, Cate Blanchett was on hand for the premiere of ?Blue Jasmine? at the Deauville Film Festival on Saturday (August 31) in Deauville, France.
The Aussie stunner looked lovely in a patterned Dior Couture gown as she struck a pose for the shutterbugs camped out by the arrivals carpet.
Written and directed by Woody Allen, the drama is described as follows: a life crisis causes a vapid and narcissistic socialite to head to San Francisco, where she tries to reconnect with her sister.
?Blue Jasmine? also stars Alec Baldwin and Peter Sarsgaard. It is now playing in theaters nationwide.

| Cate Blanchett in creamy Armani Privé in Deauville: gorgeous or overworked? | Added 11 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Here are some new photos of Cate Blanchett at the Deauville Film Festival in France on Friday. She was at the opening ceremony in these photos, but I guess she?s at Deauville to premiere Woody Allen?s Blue Jasmine. Cate wore this creamy Armani Priv dress which? I?m not sure about. What is going on these days? First I disliked that Christopher Kane spiderweb dress (blah, it didn?t fit properly) and now I?m not feeling this Armani. I mean, don?t get me wrong, even when I?m not crazy about something Cate wears, it?s still pretty amazing. But this seems bulky (it?s a coatdress, according to RCF), overworked and the neck is too high. Plus, it washes her out. She?s so lovely and pale, but would it kill her to wear a bold color? Hopefully, this is as I theorized last week ? she?s building up for some spectacular fashion moments for the big awards shows. Hopefully.
Meanwhile, I recently heard that Cate is going to be working on some period film produced by Harvey Weinstein. The film is called Carol, and it?s one of Todd Haynes? passion projects (all of Haynes? films are passion projects). According to Deadline, the film is about ?a burgeoning relationship between two very different women in 1950s New York? Blanchett is playing a wife trapped in a loveless marriage who?s desperate to break free but fearful of losing her daughter in the process.? Mia Wasikowska was supposed to costar with Cate, but now Mia is out and Rooney Mara is in. I?m not sure if Mia/Rooney was supposed to play the lover or the daughter?? Mia would have been a great choice to play Cate Blanchett?s daughter.
And remember how I said that Blue Jasmine was full of a ridiculous and amazing amount of fashion and jewelry p0rn? Well, Forbes noticed it too and they put together a wonderful article about how all of these designers and jewelers loaned all of this stuff to Cate Blanchett and Woody Allen for the film. It?s really cool! Karl Lagerfeld even designed some custom pieces for Cate.

| Cate Blanchett in Christopher Kane at the Paris 'Jasmine' premiere: lovely or fug' | Added 11 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Here are some new photos from the Paris premiere of Blue Jasmine, the new Woody Allen film that critics are saying is one of his best. It?s such a good movie and Woody seems so proud of his leading lady, Cate Blanchett, that he?s even doing some public appearances to support the film (which is very unusual). Of course, maybe Woody and his wife Soon-Yi just fancied a trip to Paris (which is far more likely). Also in attendance at last night?s premiere: Roman Polanski and his wife Emmanuelle Seigner. Gross. You would think that Woody would not want the comparison.
Cate wore this spider-web Christopher Kane Resort 2014 gown. I?m actually not all that crazy about this gown, and I?m saying that as someone who thinks Blanchett could make a burlap sack look elegant and chic. The dress is a weird design, it doesn?t look like it was tailored properly, and it does nothing for her lovely figure. Plus, those beige-y nude colors are never my favorite on anyone. Still, I guess Cate is building up our expectations ? I definitely think she?s going to be Oscar-nominated for this role, and she needs to leave room to really wow us at the Globes, the SAGs, the BAFTAs and the Oscars, right? Right.
As I mentioned in a previous Alec Baldwin post, I went to see Blue Jasmine this past weekend and I really liked it. It?s very much like a modern retelling of Streetcar Named Desire (which happens to be the play Cate did in Sydney and Washington DC for more than a year). I would recommend the film to anyone, really ? it?s not a very ?Woody Allen film? at all. It feels like Cate?s film. She owns it and it seems like Woody is just going wherever she?s going. I also enjoyed the English actress Sally Hawkins ? who did a flawless American accent ? as her sister, and the supporting cast was pretty good too. There were supporting roles done by Bobby Cannavale, Louis CK, Peter Sarsgaard and of course Alec Baldwin.
Here?s another interesting little thing about Blue Jasmine ? it?s total fashion and jewelry p0rn. Cate?s jewelry is AMAZING. And she kept wearing this gorgeous Missoni cardigan that I was lusting after.
