Here are some assorted photos of Cate Blanchett from the Giorgio Armani 40th Anniversary party in Milan on April 30 (the white Armani suit), plus some photos of Cate opening the new Australian pavilion in Venice on May 5th (the green dress). We haven?t talked about Cate since I went HAM on her a month ago when she pissed me off about the #AskHerMore crap. Is all forgiven and forgotten? Not really. But I am looking forward to seeing her at this year?s Cannes Film Festival. Cate will be promoting Carol, a film by Todd Haynes. It?s about a lesbian relationship (between Cate and Rooney Mara) in the 1950s. It?s actually in competition this year, which means Cate could conceivably win a Best Actress award. So, Cate was an obvious choice for the cover of Variety this week, which serves as a preview of Cannes (starting today). Some highlights from Cate?s profile:
Women have to help women: ?We have to push forward. What industry has parity pay for women? None. Why would we expect this industry to be any different??
The dominance of men?s stories: ?It?s not serving the audience. People want to see good films. We should have equal access to the multiplexes.?
The difficulty in making Carol: ?It was so hard. Midrange films with women at the center are tricky to finance. There are a lot of people laboring under the misapprehension that people don?t want to see them, which isn?t true.?
Cate?s lesbian relationships: ?On film ? or in real life?? she asks coyly. Pressed for details about whether she?s had past relationships with women, she responds: ?Yes. Many times,? but doesn?t elaborate. Like Carol, who never ?comes out? as a lesbian, Blanchett doesn?t necessarily rely on labels for sexual orientation.
She?ll never join Twitter: ?I think I?d end up in rehab. That stuff is addictive.?
People need to know too much: ?We need to get into people?s private lives now. If they are hiding something, they are dishonest.?
Carol?s sex scenes: ?It?s not ?Blue Is the Warmest Color.? That?s not the ambition of the film.?
Her craziest visit to Cannes, with Harrison Ford in 2008: ?I?d never seen so many people. It was like Harrison was the pope.?
[From Variety]
Most of the Variety story focuses on how Carol was made and financed and the struggle to get it financed, cast, made and released. It took well over a decade and many, many directors came and left the project. Which is weird, because it seems like Todd Hayes would have been the obvious choice from the start, right? Rooney Mara said no to her part at first, and she only came on board after Mia Wasikowska signed on and then dropped out of the role. Anyway? I?m looking forward to the Cannes photos of Cate? and even Rooney.

I?m in love. WITH THIS COAT. This coat is amazing, right? It?s Armani. It looks like Game of Thrones-meets-Star Trek. I don?t even want to look up the price. Don?t even tell me, I?m sure it?s thousands of dollars. Anyway, Cate Blanchett covers the new issue of Harper?s Bazaar Australia. It?s a great cover because A) Cate actually looks like herself and not some Elizabeth Banks fem-bot, B) the coat and C) Cate looks sassy. In the Bazaar interview, Cate talks a bit about the #AskHerMore campaign, which was introduced during this past awards season. I?ll rant about it after we read Cate?s thoughts:
Cate on the way the red carpet has changed: “Since I’ve been struttin’ the red carpet, things have changed a lot. The way women are asked about those red-carpet moments. Oh my God. It’s just a dress! People forget the fact that women are up there [at the Academy Awards] because they’ve given extraordinary performances. It’s a wonderful excuse to dress up and have F.U.N. But let’s not forget the work.?
On E!?s now-defunct mani-cam: ?Next it will be, ‘What brand tampon are you wearing? How much more intimate can they get? ‘Show us your knickers’? There is a line.”
[From Bazaar Australia via TooFab]
I ranted about #AskHerMore during the Oscars recap this year and I?ll do it again here. I think it?s fine for a woman on the red carpet to refuse to answer certain questions or to hit back and say ?Are you asking the men the same thing?? Do some red carpet interviewers cross the line into sexism? Sure. It?s not acceptable to ask an actress to ?twirl?. But having watched the red carpet shows recreationally and professionally for years, I tend to think most of the red carpet interviewers are just trying to create interesting, watchable moments in between ID-ing the dresses. Most will just get the dress ID out of the way quickly (and believe me, the actresses are trained at this point to list all of their IDs at the top of the interview) and then ask some fun questions.
I also think that the Oscars are a HUGE international deal that can make or break designers, and millions of dollars are on the line every time an actress walks on a red carpet that significant. Most of those actresses are wearing borrowed clothes and borrowed jewelry too ? part of the now-standard give-and-take system, where the celebrities get to keep or borrow thousands of dollars? worth of clothes and jewelry because it?s worth millions? in advertising for the designers/jewelers when the actress says ?This dress is Armani, the jewels are Neil Lane.? If you don?t want to be part of that, fine. No one is forcing you to walk the red carpet!
Oh, and having watched hundreds of hours of red carpet coverage, let me tell you: there?s nothing that ruins a fun night more than an actor who wants to give a ten-minute lecture on their ?process? in the middle of the red carpet. The red carpet is not Inside the Actor?s Studio. Lighten up and have some fun. But I take Cate?s point. The next time she comes onto the red carpet and says her gown is Galliano (like at the Oscars this year), ask her about Galliano?s hate speech conviction and whether wearing his clothing is her way of implicitly aligning herself with anti-Semitic hate speech. Then ask her about Woody Allen and the accusations made by Dylan Farrow. I mean, she wants to talk about something deeper, so let?s go deeper.

A few weeks ago, we discussed Cate Blanchett?s Vogue Australia cover and some early excerpts. The cover is? odd. I still think it?s weird. Cate doesn?t look like Cate. She looks like Elizabeth Banks to me, but some of you got Robin Wright vibes. Anyway, I didn?t think the interview was all that noteworthy, quite honestly. I expect more from Cate, although she?s not really famous for giving amazing interviews, preferring instead to keep some mystery about her life. But some new quotes came out, and Cate is talking about the female audience and the market is changing.
Cate Blanchett recently spoke to Vogue Australia about gender inequality in Hollywood, giving her opinion on how women’s roles are changing. Interviewer Anna Funder asked Blanchett, “Tina Fey wrote in Bossypants that any woman in Hollywood who’s no longer considered f–kable is ignored. In the era of Judi Dench and Meryl Streep and other actresses we love, can this really be true, or are they exceptions?”
“Female audiences are driving the change, I think,” responded Blanchett. “Women don’t stop consuming cultural product once they stop menstruating.”
Funder spoke with Blanchett about people being surprised to learn about the wage equality gap for women. “People were surprised?” said Blanchett, “There are countless industries around the world where women in top positions are not equally remunerated for equal work.”
[From Vogue Australia & THR]
I think that?s a good quip ? ?Women don’t stop consuming cultural product once they stop menstruating? ? but the problem is actually worse than that. Cate is right to a certain extent that young women (or girls, really) are being targeted by Hollywood with franchises like Twilight and The Hunger Games. But what about those young women on the cusp? Where are the quality films for a woman of 20, too old for Twilight and the like? The superhero films from Marvel and DC are so clearly aimed at guys aged 12 to 60. But what do the ladies have once they?ve outgrown the PG-13 rated films?
Oh, and Cate wants a part on Downton Abbey?s final season. She?s serious about it too ? she says that she?s spoken to some of the Downton people AND her agent about doing a guest role. My opinion: Paul Giamatti was so bizarrely cast, surely they can make room for La Blanchett.

This cover is crazy, right? This is supposed to be Cate Blanchett on the April cover of Vogue Australia. It looks nothing like her. Well? it looks like a hybrid of Cate, Elizabeth Banks and Patricia Arquette. Is it the hat? Is it the lighting? Is it Photoshop? Or has Cate had some work done? She looks consistently un-Cate-like in all of the photos from the shoot, so I don?t know what to tell you. I hope she hasn?t had work done. She looked normal enough when she was promoting Cinderella a few weeks ago, so I have to think it?s a combination of hat, Photoshop and lighting. As for the Vogue interview, there are a few highlights:
Being a mother: ?Children certainly teach one about compromise. I think before having children the idea of compromise rubbed shoulders with weakness or deception in some way. Children are spirited, passionate, political, demanding. They are also heartbreaking. They constantly extend parents and so parents are constantly confronted with their failures, don?t you think? I?d rather presently live life this way than not.?
Her love of the theater: ?Right before going on stage I stand on my toes [and] focus on finding a physical balance. I remember my first line and focus on the other actors. The rest is chance. That?s what?s exhilarating about it. You honestly risk not knowing which way it?s going to fall out there. I have a profound sense of audience: who is this for? Is it reaching them? Is it connecting or having any resonance? But when making a work I cannot, simply cannot, care what people think, or how the work will be perceived, if it will be considered ?good? or ?bad?.?
Her style rule: ?Listen: Don?t wear tie-dye. Ever.?
[From Vogue Australia via News.com.au]
Hm? ?don?t wear tie-dye? is a decent enough style rule. But I suspect Cate has many more rules to live by and she?s just keeping them to herself. What can we learn from Cate?s style? ?Never be afraid of bold jewelry.? And ?Take the time to properly tailor your clothes.?
As for her kids? as we learned more than a week ago, Cate and her husband Andrew Upton adopted a baby girl. They named her Edith Vivian Patricia Upton (I have to think those are family names). Cate just confirmed that Edith was actually adopted in America, not Australia. She was given a chance to speak out about Australia?s seemingly arcane adoption laws and regulations and she said, ?I think it is … well I haven’t been through it here. It was in the United States. There’s a lot of children out there that don’t have the good fortune of our biological children so it’s lovely to welcome a little girl. We’re besotted.? I love the word ?besotted?. Americans don?t use that word enough.

Cate Blanchett and her husband Andrew Upton have three sons, Dashiell, Roman and Ignatius. I always wondered if Cate and Andrew were trying for the girl at some point, just because Cate is such a fashionista and she seems like she would simply enjoy having a daughter. I guess Cate and Andrew did have some regrets, because word is that they have adopted a baby girl. They named her Vivienne!
Cate Blanchett and husband Andrew Upton have welcomed a beautiful baby girl into their family. Cate, 45 and Andrew, 49, have welcomed a baby girl into their family, their management confirmed today to The Australian Women?s Weekly.
The news came after Cate was seen arriving at her sons? school to pick them up with the newborn strapped close to her chest.
“She’s really excited and clearly besotted,” a parent at the school reportedly told The Weekly. The new bub is believed to be named Vivienne.
Cate and her theatre director husband Andrew are reported to be deliriously happy with their new addition. The couple already have three children together ? all boys. Dashiell, 13, Roman, 10 and Ignatius, six were all conceived naturally but choosing the adoption route is becoming a more common and viable option in Australia.
[From Woman?s Day]
As Andrew confirmed a week ago, he and Cate are actually going to be uprooting their family from Australia, where they?ve lived for a decade, so they can move to America for a while. It?s believed that they?ll be living in LA, although I wouldn?t think a move to NYC would be out of the question either. Andrew said Cate wanted to do more film and TV work, but I don?t see how she could stay away from theater work, you know? In any case, we?ll probably be seeing more of this family of? SIX!
As for the name Vivienne? I like it! I like it on Vivienne Jolie-Pitt too. It?s a cute name for a little girl, especially with ?Viv? and Vivy? as nicknames. Cate is actually quite friendly with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, so? I mean, I doubt anyone cares about a ?stolen? (!!) baby name.

Cate Blanchett has been in LA for more than a week. She came to LA during Oscar weekend, attended a few events and presented at the Oscars. She stuck around to promote Cinderella, and I?m including some photos of Cate outside of the ABC Studios at the bottom of the post (in addition to the header pic, from Sunday night?s Cinderella premiere).
Here?s something interesting: Cate and her family are moving to LA permanently. Isn?t that weird? Cate and her family have never lived permanently in America. For a while, early in Cate?s film career, they lived in London. Then they moved to Australia and made Sydney their homebase. But Cate?s husband, Andrew Upton, told the Sydney Morning Herald that they will move to LA later this year, when their joint tenure at the Sydney Theatre Company comes to an end. He makes it sound like Cate wants to do more TV and film projects (and less theater) and he wants to do more freelance writing ? go here to read his interview.
Meanwhile, Cate was on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night. Here?s one part, where she talks about playing a wicked character and how fun it is:
And she finally sort of explains why she told Julia Roberts to ?Hashtag Suck It? at the 2014 Oscars:

| Cate Blanchett in John Galliano at the Oscars: perfection or too undone? | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

As the returning Best Actress winner, attending just to present Best Actor, Cate Blanchett was under no obligation to wow us. But still, she?s Cate Blanchett, a goddess walking among us. Of course we believed that she was going to look amazing. And I think she did! Cate wore this Maison Margiela by John Galliano. Galliano is one of her favorite designers, and she has a history of wearing Galliano?s designs to the Oscars in particular. Even after Galliano?s troubles several years ago, he?s kept the loyalty of several big-name fashionistas, and I have to say? this dress makes me miss Galliano?s designs. The gown is understated without being boring. It suits Cate perfectly. The details are interesting (the fringe at the shoulder!) and the cut is flawless.
Cate paired her simple black gown with a big turquoise statement necklace from Tiffany?s. That was it. That was her only piece of jewelry. I kind of like how undone it is, but I wouldn?t have minded seeing some earrings. The big necklace was a trend last night too, and I think Cate was one of the best examples of it. Also: she seemed almost tender and motherly with Eddie Redmayne. She gave him such a big hug when he won!
Meryl Streep wore this custom-made Lanvin which is kind of boring, but it?s Meryl and she?s done this literally fifty million times, so she probably just wanted to be comfortable. I?m sort of surprised that her husband Don came out!
This is going to sound rude but I honestly mean it as a compliment: I love Oprah when she?s bigger. Truly. I think she looks so beautiful these days. Oprah was one of the producers on Selma, so she got the Oscars invite and she came out in this petal-pink Vera Wang gown, custom-made. I think she looks great, right?

| Cate Blanchett in heart-covered Schiaparelli at the Spirit Awards: yay or nay? | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

God, I?ve missed Cate Blanchett so much during this awards season. I have actually had fashion pangs for Cate and for Lupita. We were so blessed last year!!! Anyway, Cate came out to the Independent Spirit Awards yesterday. Cate hasn?t been around at all during this awards season, which makes sense because she?d rather be in Australia, with her family. But she flew in to present at the Oscars (as the reigning Best Actress winner, she?ll present Best Actor this year) and I?m assuming she just stopped by the Spirit Awards for fun, to see her friends and hang out a bit. Cate wore this heart-covered Schiaparelli Couture dress. I would loathe this on anyone else. If Julianne Moore wore it, I would be SO MAD. If Lupita wore it, I would think she was insane. But on Cate, it looks sophisticated and lovely. How does she manage to do that?!
I think we should start calling Scarlett Johansson ?The Body.? If anything, she looks even better since giving birth. Yes, I?m not crazy about her stupid Miley hair and yes, this LBD by Bec & Bridge isn?t anything special. But she still looks pretty and glowing.
Carmen Ejogo in Roksanda. I hate this. But all I can see is a beautiful woman who got really unfortunate bangs, so that?s clouding what I think of the jumpsuit.
Ewan Mcgregor arrived at the Spirit Awards on a motorcycle. Because he?s dangerous (to your pants).
Matt Bomer is perfection. I?m not sure about his high-heel boots though. Did he borrow them from Tom Cruise or something?!

Cate Blanchett covers the new issue of Porter Magazine (it?s #6 for those of you who care). I?ve been DYING to see some Blanchett. I?m been missing her so much. I got spoiled last year, seeing her at so many events while she supported what turned out to be her Oscar-winning turn in Blue Jasmine. But since the Oscars, Cate went back underground. We?ve barely seen her in months! So, yes, let?s end our year with some Blanchett Love. As for the Porter photoshoot? it?s not great. I need to see more of her face! And that rose petal photo just looks weird. Some highlights from the interview:
She feels judged by the ‘mummy mafia’ in Sydney: ?You know there?s an extra judgment. You know they?re really observing how you parent. They don?t know that you cram everything in to make space for your kids like any working parent. Playing the lead in a film where you shoot for three months away from home is not an easy thing for me when my children are in school and my husband is running a theatre company. They assume you have a nanny and a driver and a chef. Who gives a sh-t whether I do or not? The fact is I don’t, but you know there is a certain circle of people – and we all get insecure – who then ask, ‘Why can’t she brush her hair?’ You just have to shrug that off.?
But she?s not a big tabloid target: ?We?re really boring. We?ve got three kids; I?m not married to an actor. No one?s interested in us, and that?s part of the reason why we live here ? because nobody gives a s–t.?
On Emma Watson?s UN speech about feminism: ?I was so f–king proud of Emma Watson’s speech at the UN. It was brilliant, such an incredible use of her airspace, and really passionate. It was fantastic.?
On the hacking of private photos: ?It’s horrendous. But there’s hope. There are a lot of things happening in an international sphere, and there are enough women with enough clout to make those shifts happen. Enough is enough. And I hope the Emma Watsons of this world are going to say, ?F?k it.??
Social media: “I’m really fascinated by what we accept and what we ignore and how we process the white noise being shoveled down our throats. It used to be you’d go to the hairdressers and pick up those evil magazines and feel dirty. It’s like watching too much p0rn, I guess.”
[From Porter via The Daily Mail]
Wow, Cate cursed up a storm in this interview. Even though she?s the picture of untouchable elegance on the red carpet, I?ve always sort of imagined that Cate is a fun person to be around. Like, she probably enjoys a good steak and a beer and she loves talking sh-t about people. I would assume that the Mummy Mafia of Sydney isn?t so much ?judging? Cate as worshipping her from a distance. Like, if I saw Cate with unkempt hair and dirty jeans, I would just assume that look was going to be HUGE in the coming months.
Oh, and Cate plays the evil stepmother in the new live-action Cinderella. This movie looks like such a mess, but Cate as the evil stepmother? Funny.

| Cate Blanchett's NYC street style involves drop-crotch pants: fab or fug' | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Cate Blanchett has been in NYC for several weeks, having brought the Sydney Theatre Company?s production of The Maids to Broadway. As such, the paparazzi have gotten lots of street-style photos of Cate entering the theater every day. Cate, as we all know, enjoys clothes. She enjoys high-fashion and she has a wonderful ability to make simple, inexpensive pieces look like haute couture.
Many theater actors just wear jeans to and from their jobs, but not Cate. Cate puts some thought into it. Take those drop-crotch pants Cate wore a few days ago. Lainey has been praising the drop-crotch for a while but I always associate (fairly or unfairly) the drop-crotch with Justin Bieber and his droopy drawers. I think the drop-crotch always looks ill-fitting and yes, sort of juvenile. Like you need extra room for a diaper or something. So, I?m kind of disappointed in Cate?s drop-crotch. But I am obsessed with her too-big tote. THAT is amazing.
As for Cate?s play, The Maids, every critic has praised the production and Cate specifically. Professionally speaking, Cate can do no wrong. She?s the Meryl Streep of her generation, able to hit it out of the park every time, in theatre, film or television (although Cate doesn?t do TV!). Cate just won the Helpmann Award for Best Female Actor this week for the play. And every single actress has made a pilgrimage to NYC to see Cate in the play. This is the list of women who have gone to see it: Meryl Streep, Marlo Thomas, Nicole Kidman, Taylor Schilling, Rachel Weisz, Anne Hathaway, Naomi Watts, Blythe Danner, Bernadette Peters? and I?m sure, so many more. Page Six says it will probably be adapted into a movie.
