Hot damn! Late Tuesday the first trailer for Ridley Scott?s version of Robin Hood was released, and it’s pretty awesome. The film has been broiling in controversy for the better part of the year because of behind-the scenes drama, but you can?t see any of that in this minute-and-a-half clip. This thing is so awesome, I had to look up the cast just to make sure some of these dirty, sexy people were who I thought. In addition to Russell Crowe as Robin Hood, and Cate Blanchett as Maid Marion, the film also has Mark Strong (nice, he?s in Sherlock Holmes too), Danny Huston, Max Von Sydow, William Hurt (!!) and finally, as the Sheriff of Nottingham, one of my big crushes, Matthew MacFadyen. He was Mr. Darcy in the Keira Knightley version of Pride & Prejudice, and his voice literally kills me. I love him!
Anyway, this trailer makes it seem like this version is going to be very, very dark. I mean, except for the part where Robin Hood is riding a horse on the beach. Which, you know, Robin Hood did?? Oh, and I?m loving Cate Blanchett?s dark wig. But you can do anything to her hair, you really can, and it still works.
I?m so happy this film looks good! I was worried. There was so much scandal during the production, from the alleged feud between Russell and Ridley, to Russell?s alleged weight gain, to Sienna Miller?s dismissal from the film (or, as she put it, she was too thin and beautiful for the role), to Cate Blanchett?s brilliant casting. My only qualm is that the film looks a lot like Gladiator. I mean, that?s Ridley Scott?s style and everything, but did Russell really need the same haircut? Whatever. My Crowe crush is returning!

Russell Crowe threatened challenged Aussie reporter Annette Sharp to a 20 K “bicycle duel” after she made fun of his, uh, “fitness regime” in one of her articles in the local paper. The NY Daily News says
Crowe was apparently none too pleased by a column on Tuesday entitled ?Smokes and fatty foods the fitness regime for Rusty.? The paper mocked Crowe after he was photographed pausing during a recent bike ride with his personal trainer to puff on a cigarette and chow down on three tacos and a soft drink.
Crowe’s spokesman called up gossip columnist Annette Sharp the next day and said, ?Get on your bike. Russell wants you to go riding with him. Are you ready to die??
Then he added, “If you find yourself alone, riding in the green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium, and you’re already dead! Mwah ha ha ha hah!”

For most of the year, we?ve been treated to reports here and there about how Russell Crowe is totally chubbing out - and not in the good way. I think the reports started when Sienna Miller abruptly pulled out of/was fired from Nottingham, which was filming earlier this year. Sienna left a trail of bitchy criticisms in her wake - namely that Russell was too fat and old, and that it would gross and ridiculous for someone as young, thin and gorgeous as Sienna to play his love interest. In case you think I?m giving Sienna a hard time for no reason - the initial reports came out in January, and by April, Sienna was still saying the same crap about how she was too young and gorgeous.
Here?s the thing - the pictures of Russell from the beginning of the year do show a pretty chubby guy, but Russell seemed to lose some weight and he was back to looking pretty hot in the still released from Nottingham. But some people weren?t placated - namely, an Australian gossip columnist who saw recent pictures of Russell pigging out and smoking. The columnist called the piece ?Smokes and fatty foods the fitness regime for Rusty.? Oh, noes! So Russell responded with a challenge? a 12-mile bike ride/duel. Russell is quoted as asking the columnist, ?Are you ready to die?? Damn.
An Australian newspaper mocked Russell Crowe for smoking and shoveling down a fatty meal during a recent bike ride, so the notoriously salty actor set out to prove he is still in gladiator shape ? by challenging the paper’s gossip columnist to a duel by bicycle.
Crowe, who has been photographed looking slimmer in recent months, was apparently none too pleased by a column published in Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday entitled “Smokes and fatty foods the fitness regime for Rusty.” The paper mocked Crowe after he was photographed pausing during a recent bike ride with his personal trainer to puff on a cigarette and chow down on three tacos and a soft drink.
In a story published Friday, the paper said Crowe’s spokesman called up gossip columnist Annette Sharp the next day and said, “Get on your bike. Russell wants you to go riding with him. Are you ready to die?”
Sharp accepted the challenge and the pair met a dawn for a 12-mile (20-kilometer) ride through the city. Video of the race shows Sharp struggling to keep up while Crowe zooms along unfazed. At one point, Sharp fell off her bike.
Still, Crowe gave Sharp some credit, telling her she was a better biker than Australian director Baz Luhrmann. “You’re twice the man Baz is,” he said.
Crowe’s manager Grant Vandenberg had no comment. “I think everything’s been said in the paper,” he said.

Well, that ended well. It?s always nice to hear that a gossip columnist fell off her bike. If it had been me, I would have passed out as soon as I saw Russell. I don?t really care how chubby the guy is, he still does it for me. It?s also nice to see Russell maturing - if the gossip columnist had said this ten years ago, I think Russell would have probably bashed her head in with a beer bottle. Well done, Russell!

Taking some time out of his busy schedule to spend with family, Russell Crowe was spotted out and about in Sydney, Australia today (August 14).
Joined by his wife Danielle Spencer and their son Tennyson, the “Gladiator” stud looked to be enjoying himself on the unseasonably warm winter day.
Always a playful father, Russell didn’t even seem to mind it when Tennyson kept flopping his stuffed animal puppy over his head, and happily carried him around the Darlinghurst district.
This family time is much-needed for everyone, as Russell has been spending all of his time on the new “Robin Hood” movie as of late.

Russell Crowe stood up for Brad Pitt last year, and ended up saving Brad from getting sued and having his professional reputation tarnished. It all started while State of Play was in pre-production. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton were signed on to play the two leads - reuniting them at long last since Fight Club. Unfortunately, the script still needed work (in Brad?s opinion) when the writers? strike happened.
Instead of going ahead with a film and a script he didn?t like, Brad pulled out, as did Edward Norton. The director and the producers scrambled, and quickly cast Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck. When Russell signed on, he made the producers promise that they would not seek a multi-million dollar lawsuit against Brad for breech of contract. According to sources, Crowe was adamant about this. What?s weird is that Russell and Brad aren?t even friends, and they?ve barely met in passing a few times. The Daily Mail has more:
Russell Crowe saved fellow star actor Brad Pitt from a multi-million dollar legal bloodbath after Angelina?s other half quit the movie State Of Play.
Crowe, not known publicly for such kindnesses, insisted that Pitt not be hit with a lawsuit.
Actors had been hired, sets had been built - but Pitt wasn’t happy with the script for State Of Play. It couldn’t be re-written because Hollywood’s screen writers were then on strike, so the actor fled.
Universal - the studio bankrolling the picture - was outraged, and in no mood to put up with an actor throwing his toys out of the pram because he took exception to a word or two in a script. Universal’s legal people let it be known they were considering suing Pitt.
Meanwhile, desperate to rescue his movie, the film’s director Kevin Macdonald flew to Australia to meet Russell Crowe.
The Oscar-winning actor told Macdonald he’d be happy to be in the movie but was emphatic about one thing: he told the film-maker and other executives that before any negotiations began he wanted an agreement that Universal and Working Title, the London-based powerhouse company producing the film, would not take any legal action against Pitt.
‘Russell’s view was that the film was going ahead anyway and to pursue Brad would have been punitive as he was always going to suffer the professional embarrassment over the way he left,’ a source close to the actor told me.
There seems to have been no particular reason why Crowe should have shown his benevolent side to Pitt. The two actors barely know each other and, what’s more, Pitt was never told about Crowe’s magnanimous gesture.
Even some at the studio weren’t aware of it. ‘He’s such a t****r,’ said one executive. ‘But sometimes he gets it, and can surprise you.’
As we now know, the movie turned out well, and has become the year’s most acclaimed thriller, with Crowe on good form and Helen Mirren clearly enjoying herself as his editor (and sneaking in a few choice British swear words).
As Helen told me (and I apologise for repeating it here, but it is quite funny): ‘Americans think twat is some form of endearment, so I got away with using that and a few others.’

?Pitt was never told about Crowe’s magnanimous gesture.? Well, he is now. I wonder why this information was released now? Now, after State of Play didn?t do that well at the box office? Could it be that Crowe just mentioned it to someone, and they repeated the story? Is it some kind of public relations strategy to make Russell look like a nice guy? In any case, it was a very magnanimous move on Russell?s part. He probably thought of it as just a professional courtesy amongst actors - one that he hopes comes back to him in some way.

He claims that they have been ?trivializing news for at least a couple of decades… The desire for new information, which we could use in a very healthy way, has been replaced by supplying trivia.? Amen, Russell! He?s right on about this one. The ?infotainment? part of mainstream journalism is something that?s gotten really frightening. Think of the way CNN covered Anna Nicole Smith?s death, or the breaking-news coverage of Paris Hilton getting out of jail. But Russell has more to say - and it could be interpreted as more fodder for LeAnn Rimes? oversized ego. Oh, no!
Russell Crowe has blasted journalists for “trivializing” news.
The New Zealand born actor plays an investigative reporter for his latest role in “State Of Play” and says he has serious grievances about the way news is now reported.
He said: “There is a crisis in serious journalism and it’s been created by journalists. We’ve been trivializing news for at least a couple of decades. The desire for new information, which we could use in a very healthy way, has been replaced by supplying trivia.?
“I mean really, who gives a shit about what’s in the handbag of LeAnn Rimes? Who gives a s**t about that?”
Crowe, 45, replaced Brad Pitt as main character Cal McAffrey in “State of Play” and said his being asked to take the part came as a shock.
He added: “I was not predisposed to do this film at all, I was back in Australia, looking forward to a very long summer at home and I got a call from the studio. They said Brad Pitt had gone and would I please look at this project.”
The film’s director, Kevin Macdonald, has said he felt Crowe was a better choice for the film, but admits he can be difficult to work with.
Macdonald said: “Russell is highly opinionated. He is very smart, and he has his own ideas a lot of the time about how his character should be. Sometimes that would be great.?
“It’s collaboration with Russell. He has ideas about how he’s going to do it, and it’s hard sometimes to get him off that. He can be tough.”

I?d go even further and say ?Who gives a sh-t about LeAnn Rimes, much less her purse?? Even though I agree with Russell?s statements in total, Big Russ has been coming off as such a curmudgeon lately. Perhaps he?s always been like that, and his hotness is no longer leaving me hypnotized. But would it kill him to say something nice?

Ridley Scott?s production of Nottingham hasn?t even started principal photography yet, and there?s already been several epic controversies for the film. Russell Crowe (who will be playing Robin Hood) and director Ridley Scott are fighting all of the time. Sienna Miller was originally slated to play Maid Marian, but was either fired or quit, and afterwards came a mountain of bad press for everyone involved in the incident. Then, they had to replace Sienna - Kate Winslet or Cate Blanchett. Blanchett ended up getting the role, so at least some good has come out of this mess.
There is some more news about the film, though. First, after growing out his hair for months to play Robin, Russell just decided to trim his locks so that Robin Hood doesn?t look ?like a rock star?. Uh, I think Russell meant to say, ?like a middle-aged man trying desperately to look like a rock star?. Russell also gave an interview to Extra, where he let down all of his fans hoping to see him in a great pair of green tights:

Excited to start filming the movie, Crowe declares, ?I think it’s an incredible opportunity to take an iconic story and make a fabulous contemporary action adventure romance movie. And that?s what we’re going to do…We have an incredible cast around us…We’ll try to rob from the rich and give to the poor and kick some ass on the way.”
When asked about his wife and two kids, Crowe was effusive, ?I’m away from them now since I’m working but they’ll be here in about four weeks and I’m just counting down the days. My oldest boy’s at school now…My other little boy is coming up on three [years old] so he’s clicked over from angel to some form of demon. It’s a wonderful thing. I couldn?t speak more highly. It has changed my life. It?s changed me. It’s made me a much better person.”
It?s no secret that Crowe knows how to sing but would he ever star in a musical? He responds, ?If the right thing came along…There is a film that I’m looking at next year based on a book from an Australian writer which has a character within the book that plays in a band so that’s something I’m looking at the moment.”

Leather pants and a cod piece? Robin Hood? What the…? It?s not the size of the cod piece, it?s the motion of the… leather pants? I have no idea. This film has ?disaster? written all over it, and it?s such a shame. Ridley Scott, Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett are so talented, they should be above this kind of career-ending nonsense.

Even after the phone-throwing incident, the bar fights, the Peter-Pan-like wish to be a rock star, and the unfortunate combination of receding hairline and weight gain, I still kind of like Russell Crowe. He used to be one of my biggest celebrity crushes, replaced with people like Clive Owen and Gerard Butler. So somewhere deep in my heart-ish place (it might be further south, come to think of it), I?ll still care about Russell.
Crowe gave an interview to Empire Magazine, and some of his quotes have come up via Gossip Rocks. In the interview, Russell claims that he always knew he was going to be a big star. He knew because he was ?willing to do the work? and he has ?that attitude?. I could argue that there a lot of not-so-famous but equally talented actors (if not more so) who also have the attitude and the work ethic, yet still struggle year after year. More from Gossip Rocks:

You know who else talks like this? The Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow. She?s giving several interviews where she?s claimed she always knew she was destined to be famous. Delusions of grandeur aside, maybe it?s just something these stars tell themselves as a way to explain why they get work and other people don?t. Because saying it?s fate is basically saying ?It?s in God?s hands,? despite some self-congratulatory stuff about work ethic and attitude.
It?s still a question mark for whether settling down with a wife and kids has really tamed the beast known as Russell Crowe. He?s had the reputation of a very difficult actor for years, and it?s the kind of constant, negative gossip stream I tend to believe. Despite what Russell says about his attitude, he might have to adjust his in the years to come.

Besides his uber-successful acting career, Russell Crowe has another role that he loves to play- the part of a doting father. And earlier today he was spotted enjoying some time with his family at Sydney, Australia’s Bondi Beach.
The “Gladiator” stud was joined by his wife Danielle Spencer and their two children Charlie and Tennyson as they all frolicked in the sand and splashed in the water.
