Back in the day, Russell Crowe was hot stuff. Gladiator-era, although I always thought he was absolutely gorgeous in LA Confidential. Late-?90s and early-?00s Russell Crowe was SO attractive, and the youths probably don?t know that. It started going off the rails for him, looks-wise, in the mid-to-late ?00s. Of course, his personality was never all that great, even back when he was beautiful. There were thrown phones and tantrums and terrible behavior in those years. And in recent years, he often comes across as a boorish, sexist ahole.
Now, all that being said, looks-wise, I approve of Meaty Crowe. I?ve never had a problem with Rusty when he?s a bit portly. The man clearly loves food and God bless, I won?t judge him for having a big appetite. His weight fluctuates wildly, depending on the roles he takes and, frankly, whether or not he?s fighting his natural ?thick? body. He shouldn?t be ashamed of it, in my opinion. But he?s apparently worried:
Adele isn?t the only star undergoing an inspiring physical transformation. Sources exclusively tell Page Six that Russell Crowe ? the onetime hunk of ?Gladiator,? who was more recently photographed looking nearly unrecognizable after bulking up for a movie role ? has been keeping a low profile while he sheds pounds and gets in shape.
An insider told us: ?The reason no one has seen Russell in a while is he?s dieting. He wants to emerge after his body looks better.? Crowe?s been known to physically transform for film roles ? and there was some speculation he packed on the pounds for his upcoming road-rage thriller, ?Unhinged.? He?s also starring in another thriller, ?The Georgetown Project,? and he?d also bulked up to play Roger Ailes in last year?s miniseries ?The Loudest Voice.?
But a source said of the Oscar winner: ?He was embarrassed by those photos of him with his belly out ? He likes to eat. He eats a lot of steaks and junk food. It?s tough for him to switch gears into a healthier lifestyle.?

LOL, does he ?gain weight? for certain roles, or does he just take roles where he won?t have to lose weight? Anyway, again this is where I find Russell Crowe at his most relatable as a celebrity. He?s not eating an organic diet and he doesn?t exist to post thirst-trap muscle selfies on the ?gram. He?s an Orson Welles-type who puts on weight easily and finds it hard to take it off. Even Oscar winners let themselves go and it?s fine. Body diversity is fine. I feel like he should just own it.

Walk the Line isn?t one of my all-time favorite films, but I enjoy it. I enjoy Joaquin Phoenix?s performance as Johnny Cash, and I enjoy Reese Witherspoon?s performance as June Carter (Cash). Joaquin and Reese had a lot of chemistry, and that helped sell the movie and their individual performances as those two iconic country stars. Even though neither of them was a ?perfect fit? for those roles, it really worked, and both were nominated for awards across the board, with Reese even taking home the Best Actress Oscar. My point is that even though the film is far from perfect, I like it just as it is and I couldn?t imagine anyone else doing a better job in those roles. But according to Russell Crowe, he was offered the role of Johnny Cash before Joaquin, and he turned it down for reasons, and then he was sick about it once he saw the film:
Russell Crowe turned down the opportunity to star in a major Hollywood biopic. Speaking to Nova FMs Fitzy and Wippa on Sunday, the actor revealed he was offered his dream role to play musician Johnny Cash in 2005 movie Walk The Line. Russell explained that he decided against going ahead with the role because he felt that taking it would have led to him receiving praise he didnt think he had earned.
During his chat with the radio hosts, Russell was asked if there was a role hed been offered throughout his stellar movie career that he now regrets turning down.
The only one I have a tinge of regret about, really, and possibly do regret is turning down the Johnny Cash biopic, he confessed. It was one of those things of internal morality. It was like, This is a dream job for me! Id been playing, singing Johnny Cash songs since I was a little boy, but I felt that I would be then getting stuff that I hadnt earned.
Russell explained that he felt like hed be climbing on Johnny Cashs back to get Grammy nominations and said: It just felt wrong to me.
Although, he did admit that as soon as he saw the film, he was left questioning his decision. From the very first notes, when the camera is pushing through the prison, the knife jabs in the heart began, he said. Sharing his thoughts at the time, Russell added: Not only did I want to do the movie, but it was the exact kind of movie I wanted to do.

I think it?s fine for an actor to have regrets about turning down a role which later became another actor?s iconic performance. I even think it?s fine to talk about those regrets publicly as long as there?s some kind of context. But this came across as a bit rude towards Joaquin, right? I mean, Russell is praising the film and saying it turned out better than he could have imagined, but it also feels like Crowe is saying that looking back on it, he should have done it because maybe he could have done it better? Maybe I?m reaching with that, I know, but that?s why most actors don?t talk about which films they passed on, because it?s rude. Joaquin did a great job as Cash, and I believe Joaquin did a better job than Russell ever would have.
Just a reminder of what Russell looked like around that time. He really was one of the hottest actors out there, so it makes sense that he was offered the role. But still. Joaquin did it better.

Last December, Russell Crowe gave an interview to an Australian outlet and he ended up causing a controversy. His male privilege leaked out all over the place when he chatted about how actresses over the age of 35 just need to accept their age and stop trying to play the ingenue, and that it?s a total myth that actresses have problems finding parts beyond a certain age. He was widely criticized, as he should have been. Well, Rusty has a new film ? The Water Diviner ? and he?s on a big press tour. He sat down with The Guardian for a wide-ranging (and actually pretty entertaining) interview ? you can read the full piece here. Towards the end of the interview, he was asked about those December comments, and he tries to clarify. Some highlights from The Guardian piece:
He doesn?t believe actors should do endorsements/ads: ?Look, there will possibly come a time when I start doing commercials and you?ll know then that I?ve just given up. Other people can do whatever they want. It?s just my thing. But it?s just reaping, you know? We?re supposed to play different characters. We?re not supposed to lock ourselves and become an icon. I have a ? A certain opinion about that level of vanity.?
His life after his Oscar win: ?Even walking down the street was a pain in the arse. People want a piece of you. And something else happens, man. You build all these friendships and then you hit a certain level within the business and those people need you now, if you?re connected to their thing, their thing gets done, their life is enriched, and friendships get damaged because you say no. Suddenly I was destroying people?s hopes and dreams if I said no to something. It was rather intense.?
He never wanted to live in LA or London: ?It?s not healthy as me for an individual, to sleep in the office. There?s an ease that I have living in Australia. The best things about Sydney are free: the sunshine?s free and the harbour?s free and the beach is free. Some cities, and this place [London] is one example, there?s all these clubs and you need membership and, you know, six people to tick your name and all that. F–k all that, man.?
His comments about actresses and aging: ?It doesn?t matter what age you are, right? But what I said about knowing 40-year-old women who are absolutely certain that because they eat the right things, they do yoga, look after their bodies ? they look sensational, but that still doesn?t mean they look 21. In their eyes, there?s not the ingenue kind of innocence. I can?t be the gladiator any more. I don?t have that kind of physicality. Look the thing that people are talking about in terms of ageism or sexism or whatever, that?s prevalent everywhere and it?s male and female. When my dad was 45, he was suddenly unemployable. He?d always been the boss, always been in control, but now, in the job he was doing, there was a 25 year old who could do it for half the money. So that?s life. But the examples I used ? Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep ? there?s a dozen women, Maggie Smith and whatever ?I?m just saying: be comfortable in your own skin. Sure, you know, if you?re lucky enough you get to be the ingenue, but then at a certain point, you?re the dowager. But enjoy playing that role too.?

Rusty still doesn?t get it, does he? ?If you?re lucky enough you get to be the ingenue, but then at a certain point, you?re the dowager?? Yes, Rusty, that?s exactly the problem. It?s not that actresses are complaining about playing dowagers, it?s that the only roles for women in most Hollywood films are the ingnue or the hard-scrabble mom or grandmother. The issue is not with the state of mind with any particular actress, the issue is with the system that devalues female characters and the breadth of experiences of women at every age. And the fact that Russell Crowe is still considered a leading man and a go-to guy for studios at his age (50) is proof positive that the system isn?t working for actresses.

Bedhead & I didn?t coordinate stories, I swear! Earlier today, Bedhead covered the Isabella Rossellini interview where she literally said ?I really don?t work any more as an actress. I am old, and there are no roles for older people.? And now Russell Crowe is saying that the lack of work for actresses over the age of 35 is a flat-out myth. Crowe spoke to an Australia publication and he was asked about the complaints from some actresses about how little work there is for middle-aged or older actresses. His response was just to dismiss it out of hand. Oh, Rusty. You idiot.
Oscar winner Russell Crowe says Hollywood’s’ leading ladies need to act their age if they want career longevity in the notoriously ageist industry. In an interview with The Australia Women’s Weekly on Monday the forthright 50-year-old, who’s directorial dbut The Water Diviner hits screens on Boxing Day, gave his take on the issue.
‘I think you’ll find that the woman who is saying that [the roles have dried up] is the woman who at 40, 45, 48, still wants to play the ingnue, and can’t understand why she’s not being cast as the 21 year-old,’ he said.
The Gladiator star, whose showbiz career has spanned 44 years, says success is possible for men and women- at any age- and the belief that it’s harder for older women is a myth.
‘Meryl Streep will give you 10,000 examples and arguments as to why that’s bulls***,’ he says. ‘So will Helen Mirren, or whoever it happens to be. If you are willing to live in your own skin, you can work as an actor. If you are trying to pretend that you’re still the young buck when you’re my age, it just doesn’t work.’
But for father of two Crowe his new role as a director marks a change in his perspective as he hopes if the movieis a box office hit he’ll be able to film again in his home country Australia – and spend more his sons Charlie, 10 and Tennyson, eight.
‘Even through the largest periods of success in my life, my principle aim ? when I finish the job ? has always been to get home,’ he told The Guardian on Monday. ‘To go to the bush and, more recently, to be with my kids.’

My argument: it?s not that 40-year-old women are upset that they?re not being cast as the ingnue, it?s that the ONLY roles available to many actresses are the ingnue roles. It?s not a matter of ?actresses can?t accept their age? it?s a matter of poor quality parts for women of every age. I mean, of course there are examples to prove Crowe?s point as well, most notably? his good friend Nicole Kidman. Nicole has been stuck in this holding pattern of playing perpetually 33-year-old characters for the past decade and that?s partly on her and partly on the stupid casting directors who would rather deal with a 45-year-old Botox-face playing 33 than actually hiring a 33-year-old actress. Still, Russell is 50 years old and he?s still being cast as the lead in major studio films, year after year. He?s not playing the young buck? because he doesn?t have to. Because the roles get richer and the scripts are better for men past the age of 35. No one can say the same for women.

Here are some new photos of Russell Crowe at the Moscow photocall for Noah, his bloated, water-logged Biblical epic. Russell?s been relatively MIA from promotional duties thus far, which? considering he?s the lead, that does not bode well. As for these photos? even though I?m pretty sure he?s an angry wanker, I still have some residual affection for Russell. I think he looks chubby and cute here. The Daily Mail was making fun of his (obvious) dye job, but that might be for a film??
Anyway, one of the few ?promotional? things Crowe has done thus far is try to get some kind of Vatican screening for Noah. He?s been tweeting the Vatican (seriously!) and the studio has been trying to get Mr. Good Guy Pope Francis to say something, anything about the film. But it?s a no go.
Pope Francis has nixed a meeting with the creative team behind ?Noah,? including star Russell Crowe, director Darren Aronofsky and Paramount vice chair Rob Moore, which studio executives had been scrambling to schedule as a photo-op, Variety has learned.
The meeting was never fully confirmed, but tentatively on the calendar for Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. in the VIP section so the Pope could figuratively lend a blessing to the $125 million Biblical epic. The reason the Vatican cancelled it, according to a source, is over concerns word would leak, causing a spectacle as Crowe and Aronofsky landed in Rome.
When reached by Variety last week, Aronofsky said the meeting had been proposed, but it wouldn?t happen if anybody reported or Tweeted about it.
?Noah,? scheduled for U.S. release on March 28, has been criticized by some religious groups for taking too many liberties with the story of Noah?s Ark.
Even though the Pope doesn?t normally screen movies, he recently met with Philomena Lee, the subject of the Weinstein Co?s ?Philomena? at the height of Oscars season in February.

My guess is that the Pope heard some of the bad reviews as well. And the film has already been banned in several countries, including Qatar, Bahrain, and the UAE. Paramount is bracing for more bans across the Middle East. There?s also an outcry from American evangelicals too, because there are some derivations from the Biblical story. So, boycotts all over the place. Which might work to give the film some added ?danger? and some cool cach? if only the film was high art or something. But it?s not. It?s just a bloated Biblical mess. Stay away, Pope Francis!

I?m starting to wonder if Henry Cavill has Michael Fassbender Syndrome. In my way of thinking, ?Michael Fassbender Syndrome? is where a man is very attractive, even mind-blowing sexy, but in still photos and on red carpets, he can look rather odd. It?s not a simple issue of being ?photogenic? ? it?s how the man is being photographed. Henry Cavill in motion, on film = HOT. Michael Fassbender in motion, on film = HOT. Fassbender on a red carpet = hit or miss hotness. Cavill on a red carpet = almost always vanilla and overly groomed.
Anyway, these are some nice photos of Henry and Russell Crowe at the Madrid premiere of Man of Steel yesterday. Henry looks? um? not all that great. There has been some concern on Twitter that he?s wearing too much foundation on red carpets. I?m not sure if it?s that or if his skin is just really flawless and we?re not used to it? I?m trying to be nice. As for Rusty? God bless him. I know I?m a broken record about this, but I love him and I would still hit that. Henry was definitely hot as Superman, but Russell?s Jor-El was AMAZING.
Meanwhile, I thought you ladies would enjoy seeing this commercial that Henry made about his extensive physical training for MoS. I guess the commercial is, like, sponsored by the National Guard? That?s weird. It seems to be part of a series and this one is called ?Soldier of Steel?. There?s lots of sweaty Cavill and shirtless Cavill.
I just ignored the militaristic message at the end because I was still perturbed by the fact that Henry?s chest hair is so lacking in this video. In Man of Steel, he had chest fur and it was glorious. So? was he shaving his chest during training? Is that really weird or really common?

The ?Les Misrables? star, who split from his wife, Danielle Spencer, in October after nine years of marriage, was spotted holed up with the pin-up gal at the Four Seasons Hotel in December, and they even got a romantic couple?s massage together at 6:30 a.m., says the source.
Crowe and Von Teese have been flirting with each other on Twitter for a while. Last year, Crowe retweeted her posting ?Dressage. Was measured for bespoke blk patent boots w/my name stamped on the heel . . . But under whose bed did I leave my Hermes riding crop??
Around the same time, he also retweeted her message: ?Giving airport security a lesson in garter belts this morning.?
Von Teese, who was previously married to Marilyn Manson, is not the first woman Crowe has been linked to since his split with his wife. A few days before he was with Von Teese, Crowe was spotted cozying up to Billy Joel?s ex-wife Katie Lee. Sources told Page Six the pair were seated in front of a romantic fireplace in the Drawing Room of the Greenwich Hotel at 3 a.m. and were involved in an ?intense flirtatious conversation.?
Crowe himself denied the story, telling his social media followers, ?As soon as I finish this job & can get home, my priority is to try to bring my family back together. These latest reports are false & cruel.? This message, sources said, came just before his rendezvous with Von Teese.
Days later, Crowe returned to Sydney, Australia, where he was spotted visiting his children, Tennyson and Charles.
According to reports, Crowe could be doling out $25 million to Spencer in the divorce. Some accounts stated they had signed a prenup stipulating Spencer would receive their $14 million home and a minimum of $15 million if they divorced any time after three years of marriage. Reps for Crowe and Von Teese did not respond to requests for comment.

Back in their home country, Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman showed up at the big Sydney, Australia premiere of their brand new flick ?Les Miserables? today (December 21).
The ?Gladiator? hunk and the ?X Men? star had a blast as they clowned around outside the State Theatre, gearing up for a sprint in their classic black tuxedos.
Hugh and Russell also showed some love to their director Tom Hooper before heading into the venue to have a look at their own on-screen handiwork.
?Les Miserables? has already received rave reviews the world over, and will hit theaters here in the States on Christmas Day.

Here are some photos of Russell Crowe at last night?s NYC premiere of Les Miserables. Is it just me or does Russell look pretty good? I don?t like his (lack of) hair, but the suit looks great on him, I?m glad he went without a tie, and he just seems? relaxed?? Like, Russell is usually so grumpy and he always seemed kind of arrogant and douchey. But for the Les Mis promotion, all of the other actors keep talking about how nice he is and how supportive he was of the cast, and he just seems to be a lot softer these days. Cuddly!
Maybe it has something to do with his split from Danielle Spencer? She (publicly) dumped him in October, and I?m surprised that Crowe hasn?t had much to say about it, and I?m surprised that he hasn?t already picked up some hot young blonde jumpoff. But now Page Six claims that Crowe was seen getting ?cuddly? with Billy Joel?s (William Joel!) ex-wife Katie Lee. Well, we know she likes old dudes.

Here are some new photos of Russell Crowe in costume on the Brookville, NY set of Noah. Yes, THAT Noah. Of Ark fame. The film is being directed by Darren Aronofsky, and it also stars Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins (as Methuselah), Ray Winstone, etc. So, this is Russell in period costume, with some kind of grizzly beard. Would you hit it now that it is single? GAH. I hate to say it, but I still would. I don?t want to marry it or anything, but I would roll around with it for a few nights. I think I just like the fact that Russell looks like a man who enjoys a good meal. In my pantalones.
Anyway, as we found out this week, Russell is single now. He and Danielle Spencer separated at some point, possibly as early as May or June. Danielle may or may not be boning some dude from the Australian version of Dancing With the Stars. I should note? all of the stories about the separation have pretty much come from Danielle?s side. Russell still hasn?t said anything about anything. And The Enquirer has a theory!

Russell seems like the kind of guy who would expect to act however he wanted, but when his perfect little wife wanted to have a drink with a friend, suddenly he was like ?OMG CHEATER I HATE YOU DIVORCE.? But God knows. I take it as a good sign on Russell?s part that he hasn?t issued any statements. It gives me hope that he?s dealing with this separation with some amount of grace, and he?s not going to go out and attack the mother of his children.
