Marvel?s Doctor Strange project has been the subject of rumors and rumor-mongering for what feels like FOREVER. We?ve heard so many names associated with the role: Benedict Cumberbatch, Johnny Depp, Tom Hardy, Jack Huston and as of late, Joaquin Phoenix. It?s looking more and more like Joaquin scored the role too. Collider had an exclusive yesterday about Joaquin being in final talks for the role:
Given the cloud of secrecy that surrounds each and every Marvel Studios property while in development, there are bound to be unconfirmed rumors about almost every major aspect of their upcoming films?particularly in the casting department. The studio is currently filling out its Phase Three slate, and while Ant-Man is the first film out of the gate in July 2015 followed by Captain America 3 in May 2016, we then have the Doctor Strange movie on July 8, 2016. Marvel recently signed Scott Derrickson to direct the mystical comics adaptation, and in keeping with the rumor tradition, speculation has run rampant as to who will fill the title role.
After rounds of shortlists and cryptic comments with regards to who will inhabit the character, the trades reported in mid-July that Joaquin Phoenix was finally in negotiations to star in the film. It?s been over a month since that time and there still hasn?t been confirmation from Marvel?s end, so the speculation machine kicked up again recently with word going around that Jack Huston is now ?under consideration? for the part. However, we?re hearing there?s absolutely no truth to that rumor, as Phoenix?s deal is currently being finalized.
Despite rumors to the contrary, we?re hearing that Phoenix is absolutely still in line to play Doctor Strange in the Marvel adaptation, with our source telling us that his contract is essentially at the 1 yard line, about to pass into the endzone. Though some believed the length of time it?s taken for Phoenix to finalized his deal was a sign that things might have gone south, it makes sense that an actor of Phoenix?s caliber and temperament would want to ensure that his Marvel contract doesn?t restrict his creative freedom to take on other projects outside the MCU.

Collider goes on to note that Marvel signs actors to multi-picture deals but the number of films varies per actor. Samuel L. Jackson signed a nine-picture deal while Chris Evans only signed a six-picture deal. Which brings up a point I?ve made before: is Joaquin really going to be a company man? Marvel demands that of their actors, that they come to play. Actors have to carve out significant time to promote, to shill and to travel around the world to sell their movies. Joaquin rarely (if ever) plays that game. He?s a curmudgeon in interviews and he barely participates in the premiere hoopla, even when it?s a film he loves and supports.
My theory is that Marvel sort of wanted Benedict Cumberbatch or Tom Hardy but their schedules were a mess and both actors are scheduled with back-to-back projects for the next two years. While Joaquin is an amazing actor who could rock pretty much any role, I kind of doubt he was their first choice.

Well, there?s bad news for all of us hoping that Benedict Cumberbatch would be able to find time in his schedule to play Doctor Strange in Marvel?s latest superhero movie. But this is god news for people who were like ?Ugh, please say Doctor Strange isn?t going to be Scarfy Depp.? The last time we had any kind of major reporting on this casting, the trade papers claimed it was between Tom Hardy and Cumberbatch. Now the trade papers are saying it?s probably going to be Joaquin Phoenix. Joaquin as a character named ?Doctor Strange?? It fits.
Joaquin Phoenix is in early talks to star in Marvel?s ?Doctor Strange,? sources confirm.
Deal is far from complete but insiders confirm that Phoenix is strongly considering the superhero role, which had previously been linked to Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy.
Scott Derrickson is directing with Jon Spaihts currently rewriting the script. The pic will be produced by Marvel chief Kevin Feige and could be featured at Saturday?s Comic-Con presentation in San Diego, which is already expected to include the cast of ?The Avengers.?
The comicbook follows a former neurosurgeon who serves as the ?Sorcerer Supreme? ? the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Strange made his first appearance in the 1963 comicbook series ?Strange Tales? and would go on to have his own comicbook series and would appear in several other comicbooks that included ?The Fantastic Four,? ?Spider-Man? and ?Nick Fury.?
Marvel has teased Doctor Strange in several pics including ?Thor? and ?Captain America: The Winter Soldier.? Phoenix can be seen next in Paul Thomas Anderson?s ?Inherent Vice.? He is repped by WME.

That report was published before the Marvel panel at Comic-Con, which did not include any specific announcements about Doctor Strange. So, they?re still working on it. I?m taking these reports at face value ? Joaquin is showing some interest and Marvel is talking to him. While I think Joaquin could totally play any character if his heart was in it, I do think he would probably have some issues signing away a big chunk of the next five or six years to become a Marvel company-man. That?s just not who Joaquin is ? he?s not ?corporate.? He doesn?t seem interested in all of that. Plus, there?s always the chance that he?ll go rogue even if he does sign on.

Joaquin Phoenix has been flying under the radar for the past few months. He’s still 39 years old, and he’s still dating Allie Teilz, his 19-year-old DJ girlfriend. Yes, it is still a creepy spectacle. Joaquin’s been filming Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, and he spends his spare time at karate class. He and Allie go together, so I guess that’s one thing they have in common. The paps have caught them working on their forms together. He’s a brown belt, one level before black, and she has a white belt, which is the starter color. Joaquin goes barefoot in the parking lot after class, which is about as gross as dating someone half his age.
Joaquin’s professional life has also taken a turn for the gross. I think Joaquin is one of the most talented actors of his generation, and he’s a tortured soul. He’s now officially signed on for a lead role in Woody Allen’s next (mystery) project. Here’s the scoop from Deadline:
Joaquin Phoenix has finalized a deal to star in the next film directed by Woody Allen, which I?m hearing is going to begin shooting in July. As per usual there?s not much known Allen?s projects before they really get going, but his past few have included gangbusters Midnight In Paris and Blue Jasmine, the latter landing its star Cate Blanchett the Best Actress Oscar this year. The writer-director?s next pic in his seemingly endless pipeline is romantic comedy Magic In The Moonlight, about an Englishman brought in to help unmask a possible swindle in the south of France in the 1920s against a backdrop of wealthy mansions, the Cote d?Azur, jazz joints and fashionable spots for the wealthy of the Jazz Age.
Phoenix is coming off Spike Jonze?s Oscar-nommed Her, which earned the actor a Golden Globe nom, and he just finished Inherent Vice for Paul Thomas Anderson. He his repped by WME and attorney David Weber.

Magic In The Moonlight is Woody’s upcoming October release that stars Emma Stone and Colin Firth. Joaquin’s project with Woody remains a mystery. It will probably be a comedy, which is typical for Woody but highly unusual for Joaquin. Blue Jasmine was heavier than Woody’s usual fare, but Joaquin generally goes for the really dark stuff. I won’t be watching this collaboration in the theater, which is sad because I usually catch everything that Joaquin does as soon as possible. Not this time. I guess Scarlett Johansson was correct. Dylan Farrow’s NYT essay won’t stop actors from signing on to work with Woody Allen.

These are photos of Joaquin Phoenix leaving an LA karate class (with a brown belt?). They’re not particularly exciting pictures except that Joaquin looked generally unkempt and weird. He walked around in bare feet and visited an ATM without putting on shoes. That’s pretty gross. I wanted to talk about Joaquin because we haven’t checked in with him lately. I wonder if he’s still dating that 19-year-old DJ. I’ll never be able to get over that weirdness.
Joaquin, 39, seems too young for a mid-life crisis, right? I worry about him. He really has looked tired and unwell for about the last year, and he’s always wrestled with personal demons. Those same demons help him give great performances. He gave a heartbreaking one in Her that was so crushing and real. To deliver that depth must take a lot out of a person.
Anyway, I am wondering if Joaquin will be at the Oscars on Sunday. Her received five nominations including Best Picture and Original Screenplay. Joaquin was nominated for a Golden Globe but was passed over for an Oscar nod. He’s probably relieved at his lack of nomination because of his contempt for the Oscars as “utter bullsh-t.” It would be unprofessional if he didn’t show up to the year’s most important awards ceremony to support a movie where he was the lead actor. He should show up to support Spike Jonze at least. So I hope Joaquin shaves and wears his Chucks on the red carpet this weekend.

Joaquin Phoenix sat down with the Daily Mail’s Event magazine to promote his role in Her. You’ve probably heard that Joaquin plays a sad sack who falls in love with an operating system voiced by Scarlett Johansson. The movie looks irresistable but really sad, so I’ll probably wait until it hits DVD to watch it. I hate crying in movie theaters!
Joaquin fares pretty well in this talk with the Mail because he usually gives a good interview. He’s a big thinker but doesn’t wave that trait in people’s faces. The total lack of pretention is very refreshing from an actor. He also isn’t afraid to talk smack about the Academy, but he does worry all the time about his ability as an actor. I mean, he really worries about it. Here’s more of the same and some new stuff too. Joaquin is no James Franco:
Don’t call him an artist: “No, I?m not an artist! I don?t even know what the f— that is. I?m just doing the job that I like and at the end I hope to get another job that I like. I can be addicted to the process of building a character, but if in the end it doesn?t work they are not going to ask me to do any more films. If a movie is successful then it means I can work again, and that?s a pretty powerful incentive. I?m very conscious that I really couldn?t do anything else, and I don?t think anything would satisfy me as much. I?ve never really yearned for anything else. I?ve always felt satisfied doing this.”
On fame: “Celebrity is so not a part of my life. If I?m walking around and somebody comes up with a camera, it terrifies me. I can imagine that if you are Johnny Depp, for years you?ve had such a level of fame that you are somewhat accustomed to it and you expect it when you go out. I?ve managed to avoid it to the extent where I sometimes get trapped in situations that I don?t know how to deal with. I feel overwhelmed. But I?d rather be overwhelmed in those moments and enjoy my life privately. I?ve been able to have the life that I want.”
Is he more normal than other actors? “Normal is subjective. Compared to other people in the business I do live a normal life. I can?t get off set and away from it fast enough. I leave and I don?t talk to anybody in the business at all for a couple of weeks. I hate the beach. I don?t like travelling. I?m not being evasive. I just don?t like the things that most people would like. I live in LA and nobody walks the streets in LA. People aren?t famous any more for their work. They are famous for other reasons — and I don?t think that I have the other reasons. There?s no reason for a photographer to follow me around, and, if they do, they?re not going to get a lot.”
What are his days off like? “Nothing exciting, believe me. It?s why I don?t tweet because I have nothing to say. My life is really simple. I have a group of six friends who always hang out together. I take my two dogs on walks, I listen to music, I hang out with my girlfriend [Los Angeles-based DJ Allie Teil, 20, who is 19 years his junior], and I go to dinner. Honestly, it?s really boring. I even bore myself. I think I?m going to start making up sh-t that sounds really cool… like I race hot rods in the desert or something. Seriously, my life is simple and I like it.”
About that cult: “My parents left the Children of God in the 70s, before the group really started derailing. And I was only two years old, so I have no memory of it. In the grand scheme of things, it?s a very small blip in my life.”
Does he wonder how River’s career would have done? “No, other people, outside our family, had that relationship with him, as an actor on screen, and so of course they would have wanted to see those things. But for me that?s not what I think about. I think about the brother I loved.”
He freaked while making Gladiator: “On my first scenes Ridley ran the camera and I found out later that he didn?t even have any film in it. Literally my entire body was shaking because I was so nervous. And then Russell and Richard sat me down and said ‘Calm the f-ck down. It?s not a big deal; it?s just a movie. Have a beer and relax!’ It worked.”
When he met Johnny Cash: “John was a fan of Gladiator and so he invited me to dinner in LA. It was a very straight, family-style affair. We were sitting in the living room and John pulled out his guitar and his hands were a little shaky and I remember feeling bad because I was concerned that he felt that he had to perform and I didn?t have that expectation at all. But what I learned was that he genuinely enjoyed it and the moment his hands touched the guitar they stopped shaking. He started playing a little bit and then stopped and said, ?I?m a little nervous, I need my partner.? And his wife June came in and they sang Banks Of The River Jordan, which is a beautiful song about dying and being on the other side. It was really one of those incredible moments that you don?t have to embellish. They looked into each other?s eyes when they were singing the song and I just felt so lucky to be a part of it.”
On falling in love with Siri in Her: “It?s a relationship movie but it makes you think about the subjectivity of love and reality and what that is. I like it when my character says to Amy, ‘Do you think I can handle a real relationship?’ And she says, ‘Isn?t this real to you?’ And it is real to him. I love that idea because I think there are a lot of relationships we can look at right now among humans where you might say, ?That?s not a real relationship?. It?s subjective and to Theodore this is real. Also, it deals with things that are specific to relationships that I think everybody can identify with, things that we?ve all experienced. He thinks he?s in love but then he doubts it and while he?s doubting it he gets jealous of Samantha. I read it and I was like ‘Wow, you don?t even see this stuff in relationship movies with humans!’”

I do buy most of what Joaquin is selling here. He’s very nervous about performing well for directors and not disappointing studios with lackluster ticket sales. He doesn’t simply collect his paychecks and expect that more will arrive without much effort. Outside of film sets, Joaquin’s a pretty low-key guy (especially on the red carpet) and doesn’t run with a Hollywood crowd. The only thing destroying this picture? The classic Hollywood formula of a 39-year-old dude dating a 20-year-old hottie. I still can’t get over that inconsistency.

Well, this is interesting. And disturbing too. According to Variety (the outlet which has gotten a lot of scoops about this film), Joaquin Phoenix is very close to signing on to a role in Batman Vs. Superman. The same Batman Vs. Superman with Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot (as Wonder Woman) and possibly Jason Momoa too. It?s interesting because Joaquin would probably be scene-chewingly evil and incredible as a comic book villain, bringing depth and pathos to whatever character they gave him (much like Heath Ledger?s Joker). It?s disturbing because I feel like director Zack Snyder is just throwing everything but the kitchen sink into this mess. Ugh.
After already reaping notice for his performance in ?Her,? Joaquin Phoenix could be working with Warner Bros. again on the studio?s biggest property.
Sources tell Variety that the studio wants the Oscar-nominated actor for a role in the upcoming untitled Batman-Superman pic. However, it?s very early in the process and even if Warners offers Phoenix a role, it?s not clear he would accept as the actor has steered clear of big-budget pics in the past few years, leaning towards movies with a more prestige feel.
Phoenix is also weighing an offer on the Gus Van Sant pic ?Sea of Trees? and is believed to still be considering that offer as well. WB and the actor?s reps had no comment.
Though sources couldn?t confirm what the role is, it?s believed to be for the main antagonist, which is likely to be Lex Luthor. Names like Jason Momoa and Callan Mulvey have been linked to the film but even if those actors are cast, sources are saying that they wouldn?t play the main villain, and that Warners has always wanted someone who would be a slam dunk in the role.
The pic, which opens July 17, 2015, stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Amy Adams with Zack Snyder returning as director.
Phoenix, who is repped by WME, stars in ?Her? which bows Wednesday.

Remember back in the 1990s when Joaquin was an indie darling doing small, important, interesting films? And then remember how he signed on to Ridley Scott?s Gladiator (and got his first Oscar nomination)? My point is that Joaquin doesn?t really have a problem working on big studio projects, but he?ll probably only sign on to something huge if A) the part is crazy-good or B) he really wants to work with certain people. I doubt Joaquin is just dying to work with Henry Cavill or Gal Gadot or Zack Snyder for that matter, but if they offer him Lex Luthor and really make Luthor an amazing villain, I could see how he might do it.
? And now I?m worried about Jason Momoa might be playing. He was rumored to be in talks to play Doomsday, an ?intergalactic killing machine? so? would they have Doomsday AND Luthor?

Joaquin Phoenix covers the December issue of Esquire UK to promote Her, which is his new movie with Rooney Mara. I love Joaquin, but the first thing I thought when catching a glimpse of this cover was, “He looks … unwell.” That’s the only the cover too. The editorial is somehow even worse, which is weird because Joaquin has developed a habit of appearing unkempt, but that’s not the case in this shoot. He looks clean cut but stressed out and beaten down. Could it be because so many outlets recently reminded us all of the 20th anniversary of River Phoenix’s passing? I don’t know. I hope Joaquin’s okay.
This interview is a bit of a mess too. Joaquin quite nearly goes full Chris Evans with the neuroses firing full blast. Joaquin is no spring chicken either. He’s been acting for three decades, yet he reveals that he completely freaks out while filming every movie. He does not paint a pretty picture at all. Is it real, or is it an act?
He’s terrified of acting: “I don?t know my craft! Every f—ing movie, I feel like it?s my first. I’m uncontrollably shaking, physically nervous [on every set]. No way am I like, ?Yeah, I got this?. Every time feels f—ing terrifying. They have to put f—ing pads in my armpits because I sweat so much that it drips down my wardrobe.”
Ohhh the angst: “These guys I?ve been working with, Spike and Paul [Directors Spike Jonze and Paul Thomas] I was thinking the other day: what happened? I don?t deserve to be here!”
He aims to please: “I like being an employee. My job is to please the director, that?s it. Because seriously, if you see cuts and dailies, it?s hard for any actor to take credit. Any performance in a movie is the complete work, and it?s the director that sews it all together. It matters so much to me to impress the director. I get crippled by my own thought process. I just want to make this person happy.”
He thinks he’s an idiot: “My taste is like a sophisticated four-year-old. I wish I could say I watch European movies and sh-t, but I don?t. I watch [2008?s] Step Brothers more than any other f—ing movie.”
No pretention, please: “Here?s what I worry about. When people are constantly adjusting your collar and your lapel and you just give in to it? It?s over. You?re no longer a human being. When you see an adult actor on set, they look infantilised. People are there to dress you. They bring you espressos and lattes and sh-t. It?s like arrested development. We?re all just little f—ing runt kids.”
The offers aren’t flowing after his Andy Kaufman routine: “I?m choosing one out of two movies, dude. It?s a pretty limited choice.”
Making I’m Still Here with Casey Affleck: “That experience was so exciting and rewarding, it was really hard after that to imagine ever making a conventional movie again.”

I think he’s being real here, don’t you? Joaquin was who I thought of yesterday when Julia Roberts was rambling about how every actor wants an Oscar. Well Joaquin doesn’t want one. Remember how he spouted, “I think it’s total, utter bullsh-t” last year? Then he got called out and admitted, “I guess I sound like a d-ck.” At the time, Joaquin also said an Oscar is “the antithesis of what you want to be as an actor. You’re always trying to free yourself of the artifice, which is really difficult. Especially when you suck, like me.” He really thinks he’s an awful actor. Amazing.

Joaquin Phoenix?s special brand of crazy really is an act, according to his friends. We?ve obviously heard that before, but they?ve told Fox News? Pop Tarts that Joaquin is so into his acting crazy shtick that he actually wanted to be mocked at the Academy Awards ? and he even knew about the parodies. They also claim Ben Stiller was going along with Joaquin?s joke and not actually making fun of him - at least not in a mean-spirited way.
In 2005, Joaquin Phoenix was an awards season favorite following his portrayal of Johnny Cash in Walk the Line, but fast-forward four years and he?s the newest object of unshaven mockery.
While presenting alongside Natalie Portman, Ben Stiller (donning an over-sized scruffy wig and fake beard) chomped loudly on his gum, prompting Portman (who was also in on the act) to chastise him. Stiller then pulled a Phoenix and stuck his gum on the podium.
So while we?re all laughing at these people pretending to be the actor-turned-rapper, it seems he is actually the one secretly laughing at all of us.
“Joaquin wanted this, of course he knew (about the parodies) because it?s all part of a very strategic plan,” said our inside source. “He is selling it all as a documentary not about his musical career but the whole issue of public persona. It?s all a big joke and he?s not pursuing rapping seriously no matter what he says.”
Phew - Ben Stiller can probably breathe a sigh of relief too.
“Ben (Stiller) was just going along with the joke that Joaquin started,” added our insider. “He wasn?t poking fun at him, there are no hard feelings.”

I?m not totally sure I buy this. There are a lot of arguments either way, in terms of Joaquin?s sanity. It seems like the general public is more concerned about Joaquin than his close friends are, which does lend credit to the idea that he?s just playing with us and doing some sort of experiment.
However Dr. Drew Pinsky (of ?Loveline? and ?Celebrity Rehab? fame) wrote a piece for Radar explaining his concerns about Joaquin in detail, and pointed out that several of his behaviors are symptomatic of severe mental illness and almost impossible to mimic, even by a trained actor.
Nonetheless, my money is on Joaquin pulling one over on the public. If so, he?s definitely provided some great comedic fodder.

On the heels of his uber-bizarre interview with David Letterman last week, Joaquin Phoenix was spotted out in Los Angeles yesterday shopping for lingerie.
The “Walk the Line” stud was joined by a mystery woman as he hit up the high-end boutique Kiki De Montparnasse on Melrose Avenue, though they tried to avoid being seen together as they left.
