When CB and I first saw the thumbnail of Jake Gyllenhaal?s May GQ cover, we were sort of overcome by how orange he looked. Now that we?ve seen the cover a bit closer, he only looks severely man-tanned, but not as orange as from a distance. Anyway, Jake is gearing up to promote the hell out of The Prince of Persia, the film in which he has a distractingly bad English (?) accent. The full interview hasn?t come online, but here are some highlights:
Jake Gyllenhaal has already proven his versatility by starring in films such as Brokeback Mountain and Jarhead. Now he stars in the upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, taking on his first action role and solidifying his status as a superstar. In an interview with GQ correspondent Chris Heath, Gyllenhaal opens up about his relationship with Heath Ledger, his parents? recent divorce (?I think it takes a lot of courage for my parents to make the decision that they made?), and his love for his family. As for his own life, Gyllenhaal explains, ?I?m trying not to keep things so neat. I think I?m realizing my strengths and my faults. I think I?m trying to see what is me?and what is not me.?
Jake Gyllenhaal on working with Heath Ledger: ?He was very sensitive. He didn?t always have a sense of performance in his everyday life. He knew who he was. I think actors very often, they know how to present something, and that?s part of their job. I think he was just really sensitive. We often used to do a lot of things together, because people were very interested in him and I think we felt safe together.?
?on how Ledger?s death affected him:?Even when we did Brokeback and stuff, it was like my work was the only thing that mattered to me. It was like I could only understand or define myself through doing that. Life, I didn?t totally understand. And I think I was afraid of life. And I had success in my work, enough success that you could keep going back there. But after that happened?I think I recognized that it was work. And I recognized that this is for real.?

Poor Jake. He still gets asked constantly about Heath, which is so weird to me. I get that they were friends and Jake was devastated and heartbroken, but it?s not like Jake doesn?t have a ton of other sh-t going on, you know? He?s made a ton of movies, he?s one of the best actors of his generation, he dates high-profile celebrity women? you?d think interviewers would stop bringing up Heath. Or Jake would find a better way to answer those questions without dragging Heath?s death into every interview.

Taking care of his responsibilities as an uncle, Jake Gyllenhaal was spotted out with his niece Ramona Sarsgaard in Hollywood yesterday (January 31).
The “Prince of Persia: Sands of Time” stud looked to be having a good time with his sis Maggie and her husband Peter Sarsgaard as they hit up Ammo Restaurant for some grub.
And of course, Jake was looking hunky as he strolled past the paparazzi in a black Henley top with distressed jeans and sunglasses.
Earlier in the week, the “Stranger Than Fiction” actress and her little girl headed over to the Melrose Flea Market to do some bargain shopping.

CB did pretty extensive coverage on the ?for reals this time? split between Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon earlier today, but Us Weekly just released a portion of their cover story, and I find it very interesting. Previously, CB reported that they were taking some time apart, and that Reese wasn?t ready to get married while Jake was. Us Weekly goes on to claim that it was really Reese who did the dumping, mainly because she worried about her children and that she was giving too much of herself to Jake. Which is weird, because the two of them have been spending quite a lot of time apart the past several months, so it?s not like Reese was ?giving? a lot of herself anyway.
After nearly three years together, Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal called it quits in early December. “It broke his heart,” an insider reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly.
A source close to Gyllenhaal, 29, explains that the once-golden couple “fought constantly in the past few months,” and that the relationship concluded over a series of phone calls.
Adds another source, “No one cheated. There was no drama.”
After the pair met on the set of the film Rendition, their romance began in March 2007 — when Witherspoon, now 33, was still smarting from her 2006 divorce from husband of seven years Ryan Phillippe, 35, with whom she has two children (Ava, 10, and Deacon, 6). Indeed, sources say that her divorce and her kids were the two driving factors in the split.
“She felt pressured to wed again but she wasn’t ready,” an insider says. “She couldn’t give Jake enough and she got cold feet. Jake wanted all of her.”
Although Gyllenhaal moved into her $5 million home in June 2008, Witherspoon struggled to quell her doubts about his suitability as a stepfather and long-term partner.
“She really worried that they didn’t have enough in common,” the pal says.
As a hands-on Mom, the “super-type A” actress also fretted over losing time with her kids to her boyfriend. “When she was giving all of her energy to Jake, she felt like she wasn’t giving her kids enough,” the source says.
Not that Gyllenhaal didn’t try with Ava and Deacon, the insider points out: “He was great with the kids, but she felt like he didn’t get the whole scope of what that entailed.”

So, here?s my question? why all the bullsh-t after the original People Magazine report? It sounds like they?ve been over for at least a month, and there was likely no turning back, no takesies-backsies, no makeup sex. So why not just get your publicist to issue a quiet confirmation and be done with it? Instead, they got their people to make People Magazine look dumb (bad idea) and turn this into some big month-long drama. For what?

After denying earlier reports that their relationship was over, Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal have confirmed their breakup. We first heard about Reese and Jake’s maybe split in People Magazine in late November. It sounded like a done deal since People is usually accurate, but their reps said they were still together. Then People ran a follow-up claiming that their relationship was on the rocks because Jake wanted to get married and “can be a little overbearing at times” while Reese was content with the way things were.
Then there were rumors that Jake and Reese were still together, and that Jake was about to formally propose over the holidays. Jake even referred to Reese as his “girlfriend” in a recent interview, and talked about how he’d “learned so much from the kids in [his] life,” further sparking engagement rumors. Alas, it looks like they’re never going to take that step. Sources are reporting to multiple outlets that Reese and Jake really did break up two weeks ago and that People’s original story was correct:
Sources confirm that the two decided to end their relationship about two weeks ago. People magazine actually reported the split back then, but reps for both stars insisted they were still very much in love.
Reps are not commenting this time around.
So what went down?…
“They needed time to figure it out and they were on different coasts,” a source says. “When they were finally together, they talked it out and decided they’re not going to be together anymore.”
One source insists it’s completely amicable. “There are no other people involved,” the source said. “The relationship just ended. It just fizzled. But they also wanted to be careful and private about it because of Reese’s kids.”
Our source also shot down recent reports claiming that Gyllenhaal was planning on popping the question. (FYI: Gyllenhaal seemed perfectly happy when we saw him just three days ago at Spike TV’s Video Game Awards in downtown L.A.)
Gyllenhaal, who will turn 29 on Saturday, and Witherspoon, 33, never talked publicly about their romance. Unless you count gushing over Jakey’s kitchen skills.
“Jake is a great cook,” the Oscar winner told InStyle magazine in October. “He does a lot. We spend the weekends outside L.A, in Ojai, where I have a farmhouse. We have chickens and we grow cucumbers and tomatoes. I love it.”

Popeater is also reporting that they’ve split and their source explains it in a matter of fact way. “The relationship was at the point where they either got engaged or broke up. There is no doubt that they love each other very much, but Reese wasn’t ready to say ‘I do.’ And if she wasn’t ready after two years of dating, Jake wondered if she ever would be.”
When did Jake call Reese his “girlfriend,” then? Was it right before they broke up or afterwards because he was holding out hope that it was a temporary split? I would assume it was before as it takes a while for interviews to go to press. I like Reese and although she’s definitely a type A personality (that’s the name of her production company after all) and a go-getter she strikes me as a decent person. There’s something about Reese that makes me root for her. She got married young and her husband cheated on her, so you can’t blame her for not wanting to marry the next guy she got in a serious relationship with.

Hello my little moppets, it’s Sarah. I hope you’re sitting down, because I’m about to blow your mind. Jake Gyllenhaal referred to Reese Witherspoon as his “girlfriend”. Oh my God, I like SO TOTALLY know, right? I had to sit down for a minute to catch my breath from all the excitement.

Amid reports of “are they or aren’t they still a couple,” Gyllenhaal, 28, used the buzz word of the week ? girlfriend ? shortly after arriving at a Beverly Hills Hotel suite Thursday for a press conference for his new film Brothers.
“I’ve learned so much from the kids in my life, and somehow they just become the center of your life and the way you look at things,” he told Grazia Australia, referring to his 3-year-old niece Ramona (daughter of Maggie Gyllenhaal) and possibly Witherspoon’s children, Ava, 10, and Deacon, 6. “Obviously I exist in my girlfriend’s world and my sister’s world in a different way, but it’s opened my heart and I feel much more grown up and want to be grown up as a result of it.
“As I get more famous, there is less that is just mine so I hope you understand I want to protect that as much as I can,” he says. “I understand the news cycle, I really do, but as we all know news cycles come and go and I don’t have to comment on them.”

People did something strange after that - they kind of double-downed on their initial report, saying that they had a source who claimed that Reese and Jake did break up, but got back together and were trying to work through their issues. They also said Jake wanted to get married to Reese immediately, and Reese was all ?no, I?m fine, thanks.?
After all of that drama, Reese headed off to England, solo, to do some work on behalf of Avon?s ending domestic violence campaign. So? yeah. Stories about how she?s all alone, and Jake isn?t with her, and don?t you know that a woman can?t go anywhere alone without everyone knowing that she can?t keep a man?!? Star Magazine has some drama about how Reese and Jake spent Thanksgiving apart:

Yeah, I?m kind of ?meh? on this version. Mostly because I don?t see Jake as the commitment-phobic guy, I really don?t. I think Jake has some faults, I think he?s vanilla and tightly-wound, and probably a little compulsive about getting his way, but I completely buy that he loves Reese and her kids and wants to be settled down. So? I guess I believe People Magazine?s version.
In Touch Weekly agrees with People - they?re claiming that Jake is ?very serious about marriage and children? he wants a family and to make things official, but Reese never gives in.? Apparently, Reese is sort of ambivalent about having more kids. Meanwhile, Jake?s sister Maggie is getting all up in their business, and she?s ?been acting as the go-between and has been telling Jake that Reese is perfect for him.? Damn, hell must be freezing over, because I can see how an In Touch Weekly story could be true. Damn it!

Tobey Maguire has a new interview in Parade, and he just seems like such a serious, grown up guy. He touches on a lot of issues that parents are familiar with, like balancing home and family life, trying to prioritize your time, and just being present for your children. The part that made me laugh is where he admits that he often gets mistaken for other actors, like Jake Gyllenhaal and Elijah Wood, and that he’ll just say “thank you” and sign the other person’s name. Maguire also mused about the responsibilities that come with fame and the fact that he doesn’t want to be a celebrity. Maybe that’s why he’s often mistaken for other actors - he’s been in some blockbusters but he’s in no way overexposed or even covered much in the celebrity press.
Re-editing his own life.
“It’s just all a time issue. Recently, I’ve been putting my life down on paper, listing what I spend my time doing because I’m trying to edit some things out in order to make more time for the things that are important to me. It’s kind of a process of self-reflection on how I’m living and spending time with my wife and children, which is a number one priority. But, I love my work as well, so that’s very important too.”
Searching for quality time.
“A lot of times I’ll work out of home. But, it can get in the way of being a dad. The kids pop in and I’m in the middle of things so I stop, but I’m not as present as I want to be. Now, I’m thinking I’ve got to put everything away, the computers, phones, BlackBerrys, people bothering you about whatever, and just be like, ‘OK, I’m just a daddy right now. I’m going to eat breakfast with my children, I’m going to play with blocks or toys whatever and just totally be with them.’”
Analyzing his success.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to be a pretty successful person, but I’ve realized that it doesn’t bring fulfillment. Success, of course, has a lot of fun stuff about it, but ultimately, if you’re the kind of person who lives in desire and constantly wants more, you’ll never be satisfied. So I’ve had a certain amount of success and I’m reaching for more and I have ambition, but I go, ‘Wait a second, this doesn’t make me happy, this isn’t really what fulfillment is.’”
Keeping his celebrity in perspective.
“I think I have about the right idea of how cool I am. I’m not trying to be a celebrity. Some people who get famous make bad choices — it depends on what you want out of life and who you want to be as a person. I like feeling good about myself as a human being, so if I make a choice that doesn’t support that, I stop pretty quickly. It’s really self-correcting.”
Getting older, but maybe not wiser.
“I’m always amazed at how, like when I was a kid, I definitely thought I was fairly intelligent about things and then you get a few years out and you look back and I’m always amazed at how little I knew. You go, ‘Wow, I had no clue.’ Now, it’s finally caught up to me, the point where I realize I just don’t know much at all, period.”
He was not in Brokeback Mountain.
“I’ve been mistaken for so many different actors, it’s just wild. I’ve gotten Jake Gyllenhaal a few times like, ‘Loved you in Brokeback Mountain.’ I’ve had that. I can’t remember all of them, but Wes Bentley, tons of times, and Elijah Wood. When people ask me for my autograph and say, ‘Oh, you were so great in such and such,’ which I wasn’t in, then I usually just sign the other actor’s name and say, ‘Thank you very much.’”

Tobey can be a real sourpuss with fans and with paparazzi, but he seems to have a good head on his shoulders. I did a quick review of our archives on him as I remembered that he had a rough childhood but I couldn’t recall the details. I found this older interview with Parade he did in 2007 in which he talked about the fact that his parents split when he was three and that he was shuffled around to different family members. He said “I realized at a young age that I was responsible for myself… I had plenty of difficult, emotional and scary times as a kid, but I don?t dwell on it.” Tobey went on to explain that his difficult upbring influenced his decision to do well in life “Growing up the way I did, I had a very serious ambition to make some money, to have some security and comfort in my life.”
Tobey is promoting Brothers, out tomorrow in the US and also starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman. There were some stories of minor diva antics on set between Jake and Tobey, particularly the two insisting on having their own personal makeup artists while the studio wanted to save money by having them share. I bet they got along fine.
Spiderman 4 is coming out in 2011, and may have been slightly delayed by Maguire’s insistence on having nights and mornings off to play with his kids. He has daughter Ruby Sweetheart, 3, and son Otis Tobias, 7 months, with wife Jennifer Meyer.

Methinks People Magazine is doing some damage control! People just released a new story on the Jake Gyllenhaal-Reese Witherspoon rumors that began yesterday, when People first reported Jake and Reese had split. According to People?s new article, they had a source who claimed Reese ?told close friends around Thanksgiving that she and Gyllenhall? had broken up.? People Magazine also does a somewhat defensive timeline of how Reese has been solo the past few weeks, as if to say “Dude, they weren’t photographed together for two weeks! What were we supposed to think?”
People goes on to make it sound like Reese and Jake have broken up several times, the working (and unspoken) theory being that Reese and Jake did actually break up a few weeks ago, but might get back together yet again. Another claim: Jake wants to marry Reese (?Jake would marry her tomorrow?) but Reese is gun-shy about re-marriage and strictly adheres to a ?if it ain?t broke, don?t fix it? philosophy (?Jake can be a little overbearing at times, and Reese is really happy with life right now. Why screw that up or change a good thing??).
While the precise status of the Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal relationship remains unclear ? over the weekend a source close to the actress told PEOPLE the couple had split, a claim denied by their reps ? the two have certainly had their share of highs and lows during their two-year relationship.
Witherspoon, 33, told close friends around Thanksgiving that she and Gyllenhall, also 33, had broken up, says the source. She was seen driving alone in Los Angeles over the weekend, then on Sunday she was spotted at the Whiskey Kitchen in Nashville ? without Gyllenhaal.
As a couple, the last time they were seen together was two weeks ago, when they spent time in Philadelphia (where Reese is shooting a yet-to-be-titled movie with Oscar-winning director James L. Brooks) and in Pittsburgh (where Jake is shooting his new movie, Love and Other Drugs).
“As much as everyone thinks they’re right there, they’re really not near the whole marriage thing,” a source close to the couple told PEOPLE last spring. “Jake would marry her tomorrow, but Reese doesn’t want to go there yet, even though he would like to.”
The source adds: “There’s a huge attraction between them, and they’ve becomes a team, partners, but Jake can be a little overbearing at times, and Reese is really happy with life right now. Why screw that up or change a good thing?”
Then there are her children ? daughter Ava, 10, and son Deacon, 6 ? with former husband Ryan Phillippe to consider. “The kids are her first priority,” says the source. “They’re not ready for that, at least as far as Jake.”
The pair first met on the Morocco set of the movie Rendition in 2006. “Jake went and introduced himself to Reese,” a source close to both told PEOPLE. From there, “things slowly progressed, but it was never something she thought would happen from the start. She just kind of developed this little crush over time.”
But with Witherspoon’s divorce from Phillippe still pending at the time, the actress took a step back during the summer of 2007.
“They broke up. It’s totally and completely over,” a source in Witherspoon’s circle told PEOPLE at the time. “Reese was the one who had to do it. She just got out of a divorce and was so concerned with her family, she just didn’t have the time for him and he really demanded that.”
The divorce was finalized in June 2008, but moving on proved difficult for Witherspoon. “When people get in your face and say, ‘This will pass,’ you think: Are they crazy?” Witherspoon said in the April 2009 issue of Elle magazine, adding that the divorce was, “very humiliating and very isolating.”
Still, Witherspoon came to realize, “If it’s not painful, maybe it wasn’t the right decision to marry to begin with. Those are the appropriate emotions.”
Reuniting with Gyllenhaal in 2007, Witherspoon later said her beau was “really a fantastic guy.”
“He’s very supportive,” was she told Vogue last year. “Suffice it to say, I’m very happy in life, and I’m very lucky to have a lot of really supportive people around me who care very much for me, and, you know, that’s all you can hope for in life. I am very blessed in that way.”
Still, Witherspoon was hesitant to discuss the possibility of marrying again. Despite repeated rumors that the duo had gotten engaged, reps for the pair denied a proposal ? and Witherspoon made it clear that she wasn’t ready.

Well, I think it?s perfectly reasonable that Reese would be rather ?meh? on marriage after the chaos of being married to Ryan Phillippe. Excuse me, I mean ?alleged? chaos. He was allegedly cheating on her all over the place, and I could see Reese having some big trust issues. It?s also interesting to hear that Jake is ?a little overbearing? - I?m just happy to hear he?s not Mr. Perfect, although I do think it?s kind of sweet that he is the one who wants to get married and Reese is the commitment-phobic one. Good work, Reese!

Unable to make their opposite schedules work out, Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal have ended their relationship.
While few details concerning the pair’s decision to call it quits have been made public, the pair had rarely been seen together for the past month - leading to speculation of troubled times.
Prior to breaking things off, Reese told InStyle in October, “We spend the weekends outside L.A, in Ojai, where I have a farmhouse. We have chickens and we grow cucumbers and tomatoes. I love it. It reminds me of where I grew up in Tennessee.”
Witherspoon, 33, and Gyllenhaal, 28, were first rumored to be a couple after co-starring in “Rendition” back in 2007 - with Reese coming off of her divorce from actor Ryan Phillippe.
