Yesterday we reported on quotes Ben Affleck gave the Associated Press during his promotional duties for Justice League, out this week. Affleck said that he was ?looking at? his ?own behavior,? that he wanted to be ?part of the solution? to harassment and assault in Hollywood and that we needed to have more women in power. Also, I missed the fact that there is video of Affleck?s brief comments. That?s below and here are his full comments from the video.
It?s a terrible thing and it?s happening on a scale that I don?t think anybody except maybe women understood and recognized how terrible it was. It?s opening a lot of people?s eyes to this. For me that means also looking at my own behavior and addressing that and making sure that I?m part of the solution and making positive steps. We?re calling out other guys when we?re seeing behavior that?s inappropriate.
Two things need to happen. One more women need to be pushed to power so that women feel comfortable coming forward and having someone to report to. Two it can?t just be a woman?s issue. It?s got to be a men?s issue as well.
I would question why he hasn’t more fully acknowledged his own behavior toward women, but at least it’s a start. Another good start for Ben is the fact that he’s pledged to donate all residuals from his Weinstein films to charity. Remember when Ben?s buddy, director Kevin Smith, did this and how emotional and powerful his statement about it was? Here’s what Ben said, and note that he said it after the journalist asked about it.
Fox 5: Kevin Smith is going to be donating his future residuals of his movies that he made under Weinstein to the women in film. I just wanted to get your thoughts on that.
Affleck: It?s funny that you mention that because once Kevin suggested that I decided to do the same thing. Any further residuals I get from a Miramax or Weinstein movie will go either to Find or to RAINN. One is Film Independent and another is a women?s organization. I just don?t want to cash any more checks from the guy. It was Kevin?s idea and I hope it catches on. Some people can?t afford to give all their residuals away but even if you?re giving 10% that?s something.

Ben is not Kevin Smith, he?s not an open person and he?s not emotionally demonstrative. He wants to seem mysterious and not be too revealing or vulnerable but he gives himself away in how he tries to control his image. That said, it?s wonderful that he?s donating all the residuals from his Miramax films. Just look at all the film credits he has at Miramax, there are 17 films there including of course Good Will Hunting, Shakespeare in Love and Gone Baby Gone. It?s just interesting to me that he waited to announce this until he was promoting this film. It?s also interesting that the journalist brought it up first, but as I always say I don?t think there are unscheduled questions in interviews with Ben Affleck.

There are new photos of Ben Affleck and Lindsay Shookus out in LA this week, which you can see on The Daily Mail and TMZ’s site. (They?re exclusive to one agency and we can?t afford them frankly.) Lindsay is wearing a sheer black v-neck sleeveless shirt with a bra underneath. Visible bras and bras as tops are actually in this season, but I don?t have the nerve to try to pull that look off, so good for her. I?m not saying it?s a great look on her, she should have taken one look in the mirror and changed her shirt. I do enjoy seeing her fashion and style choices though because she’s so deliberately casual like she doesn?t want us to think she carefully styles herself. Maybe I’m making that assumption because I plan my outfits, but it also takes one to know one.
TMZ is reporting that Lindsay and Ben are house hunting in LA and that they looked at three mansions ranging in price from 12 to 18 million. Real question: would you date Ben Affleck for that lifestyle? Given what we’ve learned about him in the past few weeks especially, I would not. Imagine the ways he would manipulate, lie to and gaslight you. It’s not worth the trade off, although I admit it would be fun for a month tops, especially in the love bombing stage. Ben has an opening he needs to fill and Lindsay is stepping in. He?s been renting a home and now he?s ready to buy. I don?t think Lindsay will be spending more than half her time there though. She has a career in New York and that makes this relationship especially appealing to Ben.
Meanwhile InTouch is reporting that friends are still urging Affleck to go to inpatient rehab. I know that our coverage of their past story on this was controversial as many of you said that inpatient rehab is not a cure all and is not for everyone. We?ve seen Ben at outpatient treatment frequently over the past few weeks, almost as if he wants us to know he?s been going. According to InTouch friends say Affleck?s addictions are ?worse than ever? and that they?re still urging him to seek 30 days of inpatient treatment or more. Another source tells InTouch that Affleck is ?trying to figure out what treatment works for him.? That means he?s trying to do it his way and we?ve seen how that works. I do hope he achieves sobriety though. He is looking more sober lately I?ll give him that.
Given how much flack Matt Damon is getting for continually changing his story on Weinstein and generally sounding clueless, how much do you want to bet that Affleck, a man who has groped three or more women that we?ve heard of and seen, is happy he’s not on the press circuit right now? I bet WB is going to keep him off Justice League promotional duties, or at least severely restrict his press opportunities, for that reason. Remember that this dude is known for trying to censor the questions at press junkets. If Affleck does promote JL, Weinstein and groping questions will be off the table. Just send Gal Gadot out there. We love her and she’s already a huge box office draw. Affleck’s record is spotty.
Oh and Affleck was spotted out at church on Sunday because of course he was. He should just take that husky puppy for walks and dote on it in front of the paps. On Wednesday, Ben Affleck and Lindsay Shookus’s entire day out in New York City was chronicled by the paparazzi. They got coffee, they headed to her office together, they checked out of The Ritz (it’s unknown how long they stayed there) and then Ben brought Lindsay back to her apartment, where she was seen beaming at the paparazzi. I guess sources close to Lindsay were telling the truth when they said she was “comfortable getting a lot of attention.” US Magazine has a bunch of glowing quotes about how Ben is getting serious with Lindsay and how smart and interesting she is. It looks like this is a whole relationship rollout and that he’s committed to it. I’m surprised. Here’ US’s report:
On July 10, the Justice League actor treated his girlfriend of three months [sic], Saturday Night Live producer Lindsay Shookus, to a cheese pizza at Beach Street Cafe in L.A.?s Pacific Palisades neighborhood. ?He was really nice,? an employee says in the new issue of Us Weekly, noting Affleck has come into the shop before. ?And he tipped well!?
Credit the 37-year-old producer for his good spirits. The two-time Oscar winner, 44, has been ?casually dating? Shookus since April, says an Affleck insider, ?and he?s very happy with her.? (Per another source, the couple first got close about three years ago..)
One of the things that attracts the Live By Night actor most to Shookus, who has also produced 30 Rock and Adele Live in New York City, is their shared interests. ?Lindsay is an incredibly intelligent woman,? says another Affleck pal. ?They have really good conversations and just like hanging out with other.?
A few months in, they?re already taken their romance global, exploring London, where he was filming Justice League, in late June before enjoying July date nights in L.A. And a source says Affleck plans to visit Shookus in New York City soon. The actor is grateful for another shot at love, adds the Affleck insider: ?Ben?s really enjoying Lindsay?s company.?

As I’ve said before, Lindsay just created a job vacancy, but good for them. Ben might manage to be faithful for a year or so. If kids come into the picture he’ll be miserable again soon enough. In Touch is reporting that Ben and Lindsay are “actively talking about having a baby” together. She’s 37, it could happen. According to In Touch, Jen is livid “She?s angry, and she has very good reason to be. She?s never been the type who?s about getting retribution, but Ben?s insensitive actions have changed her.” I mean this could all be BS (and Gossip Cop claims it is), but Ben took Lindsay to Jen’s favorite restaurant, a place he’s taken Jen for Valentine’s day, and got papped there. That was personal, that was a dig at Jen. Then Jen went there less than a week later, with Chelsea Handler no less. I buy that Jen is livid and I buy that Ben is promising Lindsay the world and talking about babies because that’s what narcissists do. Usually it doesn’t pan out this way for the other woman, but Lindsay was the right mistress at the right time. She’s exceptional right now because she’s meeting Ben’s needs. Wait until she expects him to meet hers. As many of you pointed out, he can’t even be bothered to carry even one of her bags! She’s ok with that, she’s the cool girl.

Do you guys watch Intervention on A&E? While the lead-up to rehab is usually so hard to watch, it?s worth it to see how different the alcoholics/addicts look after being clean for over a month. The people don?t always make it through rehab of course, but it?s inspiring to see the transformations when of the people who get sober. That?s what I?m reminded of when I see these photos of Ben Affleck at the AutFest International Film Festival. He looks like his head is clear and he?s regained some of the hotness. Plus he looks happier for whatever reason, maybe it?s sobriety, it could be that his divorce is moving forward, maybe it?s a little of both.
Anyway this was a film festival sponsored by the Autism Society, where Affleck was honored for his portrayal of a autistic man in The Accountant. During the Q&A session he was asked whether he would want his kids to go into show business and said he didn?t want them to act before they?re 18 due to the pitfalls of being a child actor. As for his longevity in show business, Affleck credited it to his thick skin, which? no.
The star chatted about his kids during a Q&A portion of the event, which honored him for his performance in last fall?s thriller The Accountant as an action hero with autism. Affleck noted that he?s unsure whether he?d want his little ones to take up acting.
?I think it?s a hard thing. I love being an actor, I got into it as a child and I wouldn?t change that. But I also wouldn?t want to take my kids and push them out there before they were 18,? Affleck said. ?If they are 18 and they want to make those choices and do that kind of thing, that?s fine. But being a child actor, I just know too much of the downside of what that can be like.?
He added: ?I had some great rewards, and I probably wouldn?t have made it as an adult had I not built up that body of work as a kid, so it?s a strange thing. My kids would be good in the school play. If they can handle that, they?re in good shape.?
As for how he?s survived so long in the movie industry, Affleck credited his ?thick skin.?
?You know you have to have a certain thickness of skin in this business because success and failure, as a performer, are really two sides of the same coin,? he said.
?You?re putting yourself out there and being evaluated, and it doesn?t go one way, all the way, every time.?
Affleck appeared upbeat at the event, and a source previously told PEOPLE that both he and Garner seemed ?happy? about spending Easter Sunday together as a family recently.

This is the guy who had a PBS genealogy show censor the fact that he had a slave-owning ancestor. This is the guy who complained about for years about the way the tabloids treated him, even getting his friends to complain about it. He doesn’t have a thick skin. His people have worked overtime to control the narrative around his separation and divorce for years. That’s not someone with a thick skin, that’s someone who thinks they can take criticism while doing everything they can to deflect it.

There are so many follow up stories in the wake of Ben Affleck’s surprise announcement that he’s completed treatment for alcohol addiction. There are of course new insider quotes about his decision to enter treatment, which is typical of the Garner-Affleck PR team, but it’s still rather measured for them. Both ET and E! are running retrospective stories about how Garner has supported Affleck and been there for him over the years, which is kind of a no-brainer. They’re not necessarily publicist-sanctioned.
There are also new stories about Affleck’s future in Batman, and that seems to still be in the works despite older rumors that Affleck is no longer interested in the role. Production has been delayed but he’s still moving forward as Batman is is reportedly still co-writing the script. Reports claim that the entire script is being rewritten at this point, which explains his conflicting statements about it. We’ve already heard that he will no longer direct. Below I’m just excerpting the quotes about why he went to rehab and how he’s doing now. Of course Ben has already been papped out with his kids.
“[Ben] has been struggling and he decided that he needed to get back to being healthy again. It was Ben?s choice to receive treatment,? says a source. ?She is happy that he is working on himself.?
?Earlier last year, Ben was doing great. He was making an effort to stay healthy,? says a source. ?But then something happened around the holidays that made him slip.?
Yet throughout Affleck?s ups and downs, ?Jen was supportive and understanding,? says the source. – People
“He didn’t want to cycle through anything he had dealt with in the past,” a source shared with E! News exclusively. “He’s moving in a healthy, balanced direction.”
He didn’t want to hide,” our source explained. “He will continue to work on it. This was a step, but it’s a progressive process. He’s in a good place.”
“He learned a lot while he was there,” our insider shared. “Everyone has a story and was open about it. That was meaningful to him.” – From E!
?He has a great support system around him,? adds the friend. ?Really nice to see his friends and family gather for him ? the industry too. This was his decision to be proactive to live a healthy life. He?s been very moved by the outpouring of support.?
Now that he has returned from treatment, Affleck?s friend says, ?It is business as usual in the house. He picked the kids up from school yesterday, dropped them off today. As always the kids come first. They are fiercely protective of them.?
A separate source also tells PEOPLE that ?Ben and Jen took the kids to school together? this morning, and adds that Affleck is continuing to live at the family home, where he?s lived through most of their separation.
?With Ben back in L.A., things are back to normal,? notes the source. ?They are focusing on the kids. Ben missed them and he?s happy to be back with his kids.? – From People

As I said yesterday I’m glad he’s getting treatment, no matter why he sought it, and I’m glad that he’s been so open about it. This can only help him and his family if he’s serious about it. If he decides to continue his recovery, it can also help others if he is open about it to the press. Imagine if say, Johnny Depp, sought rehab and came out the other side clean and talking about it. We could see that from Ben, and I’m reminded of Colin Farrell’s rehab stories, and how much gratitude he has for it still. Ben didn’t seem that far gone, although he had some bizarre interviews. It must have been so much worse behind the scenes. Remember how Garner said he “cast quite a shadow”? There’s a lot of potential meaning to those words.

Ben Affleck has just announced on Facebook that he has completed rehab for alcohol addiction. This may be confirmation of a blind item which Lainey Gossip published last week which many of you believed was about Ben. He writes that he wanted to be a good example for his kids and he calls Jen his “co-parent” and thanks her for supporting them and taking care of the kids while he was away. It’s all rather dignified.
I quit drinking nine months ago so I could be a better mom and person and it’s one of the hardest and best things I’ve ever done. I was a daily drinker and thought there was a release in that but until I gave it up I didn’t really know what freedom was. It’s hard not to drink or do drugs when they’re a crutch for you and it’s hard to realize you’ve been living a lie and that you have to make changes. I know Ben self sabotages, I know he makes obviously poor decisions, and drinking was part of that for him. This isn’t his first stint in rehab, he went back in 2001 but started drinking again and probably thought he could control it. Hopefully this is a new path for him and he can stay sober for himself and for his family. I don’t have any snark for that, it’s a hard thing to admit and to do. It’s also smart of him to make the announcement himself and to get ahead of the story. Also, now the latest round of “will they or won’t they” get divorced makes a lot more sense. I wonder what the next phase will be like for him and maybe he’s wondering that too.

Following the news that Ben Affleck has stepped down from directing The Batman there are quite a few think pieces about how this possibly happened and what it means for the DC Universe and for Affleck’s career. One detail that I didn’t know is that the original script, co-written by Affleck and DC comic’s Geoff Johns, is being rewritten by Chris Terrio, who wrote the script for Batman vs. Superman and Argo. This explains Affleck’s conflicting statements about the completion of the script and it also sounds like a recipe for disaster given how dark, long and poorly-received BvS was. This also begs the question as to who is going to direct, will it be Zack Snyder again and are we in for another doozy? Have they all learned from their mistakes and are they ready to change course or are they committed to telling this story the exact same way with their same vision? I guess it doesn’t really matter in the scheme of things. The standalone Batman movie is going to make bank regardless, some people will like it (just like BvS) and a lot of us won’t get it. There’s also Justice League and Wonder Woman coming out and it’s possible that they’re waiting to see how those films are received by audiences and critics.
So with all that in mind and the fact that Live By Night bombed, these issues have to be weighing heavily on Ben Affleck. He did what a lot of celebrities do when they’re struggling with personal and PR issues – he did charity work. That’s actually quite wonderful and an admirable way to handle it. Reaching out to people has got to make such a difference both for them and for the person doing the work. Affleck went to Children’s Hospital LA yesterday and visited with patients. So far all I could find was this one Instagram photo of Affleck’s visit but look at how happy he is! You can barely see the little girl and her mom from the glare in this photo but it’s still so sweet.

In our post yesterday about Mayim Bialik’s preachy video on co-parenting with her ex, several of you mentioned that this was Jennifer Garner’s playbook as well: spending vacations and holidays together, making sure that everything seems “normal” for the kids, and also getting along for the sake of the kids. Only in Garner and Affleck’s case, it’s not entirely clear to either the public or probably their kids that they’re actually separated. “Sources” may insist that they’re not together one week and then claim the next that Affleck is trying to win Garner back and that she might be open to it. So it’s hard to tell what’s going on, particularly when the celebrity-friendly outlets run stories like this:
[Affleck] celebrated his Aug. 15 birthday with ex Jennifer Garner and their three children while on a family trip to a Montana resort where they own a condo.
“The family spent the week together and enjoyed outdoor activities like hiking, biking and swimming,” a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE.
Despite separating after 10 years of marriage in June 2015, the actors have maintained an amicable relationship, the focal point of which is their three children ? Violet, 10, Seraphina, 7, and 4-year-old Samuel.
The family has spent a large amount of time together, including a month-long trip to Europe during the summer while Affleck was filming Justice League in London.
“Ben is happiest when he’s spending time with his family,” adds the source. “It was a great birthday.”

Good for them, but here’s the thing – I doubt we would have heard anything about this if they didn’t tell People Magazine. There aren’t any paparazzi in Montana (although I wouldn’t be surprised if some “found” them, Garner said they would get papped in Timbuktu) so we wouldn’t have seen pictures and it’s not like everyone is wondering where they are. Instead of recording confessional videos describing the play-by-play of her coparenting and maybe-reconciliation with Affleck, Garner (or maybe Affleck, I have no idea) tells the press what they’re doing. I wonder if any other of Affleck’s exes would have stuck around so long. We’ve seen how both Jennifer Lopez and Gwyneth Paltrow have handled their respective divorces with kids. Both of them have been civil to friendly to their exes, with Paltrow striving to perfect divorce and tell us about it, but they’ve each moved on to other partners. Garner isn’t doing that for whatever reason, and neither is Affleck. It just occurred to me that last year we heard what Affleck did for his birthday too – he went to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter with Garner and their kids.

US Magazine has a new article on the sidebar this week letting us know about the state of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner’s relationship, because we really needed another update after the sidebar on the cover of People last week. Every day I wonder how they’re doing, if they’re still a couple, if Ben is off cavorting with random women on yachts in Canada or both because you know those two things are not mutually exclusive. Jen knows it too on some level, but she may have stuffed it deep down where she keeps her knowledge of fashionable shoes because US is reporting the divorce is now off.
In fact, talk of divorce has ceased altogether, sources reveal in the new issue of Us Weekly.
?Jen mentioned that the divorce was going through very soon, and then a few weeks ago, things changed,? says a source close to Garner. ?It does not seem to be moving in that direction.?
The Justice League actor, 43, and actress, 44, are cohabiting in their $17.5 million, five-bedroom mansion, albeit in separate bedrooms. Garner revealed in the March issue of Vanity Fair that she sleeps with their oldest daughter, Violet; Affleck bunks in the guest room, according to a close source.
?Jen seems to still be in love with Ben but doesn?t allow her mind to go there,? says the Garner pal. ?She just focuses on the kids.?
The man down the hall is also having trouble letting go. ?If it was up to Ben,? adds a second insider, ?they would be together. He feels like he can?t live without Jen.?
Still, an Affleck source insists lawyers are hammering out the details of their divorce privately. ?They were never in a rush to file. This was always the plan…
?They want their kids? lives to go on as uninterrupted as possible,? says a source.

Some people will say US is making this up, but this is consistent with People’s report last week, and as I usually mention, US had Garner’s side of the divorce along with exclusive details from their relationship and breakup vacation, where Garner figured out Affleck was sleeping with their kids’ nanny. (I would like to get an update from Ouzounian, but I bet she signed an ironclad NDA.) So Affleck wanted to get back with Garner and she’s letting him stick around until the next time he publicly embarrasses her. Maybe she figures if he keeps him on notice he’ll be faithful, at least by outside appearances.
