Ruth Negga wore a green Dior for a glamour-starved Cannes Opening Night
This week, the Hollywood Reporter pointed out that for the first time since 2017, no Hollywood studios will premiere any major films during the Cannes Film Festival. There are a handful of smaller American films in competition, but usually, one or several of the biggest studios arrange for an out-of-competition Cannes premiere to really have a glitzy promotional launch. In recent years, films like Mission: Impossible The Final Reckoning, Top Gun: Maverick and the final Indiana Jones movie have all done their world premieres in Cannes. There?s nothing like that this year, and you can really tell, just from the opening night. The Croisette is dead as can be, and judging solely from the opening-night photos, it genuinely looks like everyone is ?over? Cannes.

So, here are some fashion photos from the opening night. I?m covering Demi Moore separately, but she?s only there because she?s on the Cannes jury. As is Ruth Negga, who wore this striking green Dior. I wish there were more photos of it because it?s an interesting look.

Jane Fonda showed up in a black Gucci gown and that same crazy wig she?s been wearing a lot lately.

Joan Collins wore Stephane Rolland, and she was accompanied by Laurent Lafitte. I?m sure Dame Joan has had a lot of work done, but I appreciate the fact that she?s not Botoxed to hell and back. Just a touch of old-school glamour.

I have no idea who Maura Higgins is but she got a lot of attention in this Andrew Kwon gown. As I said, we?re really glamour-starved, because ten years ago, this was considered the bare minimum for Cannes? opening night.

Heidi Klum, the woman who shows up for the opening of an envelope, wore this frumpy, unflattering Elie Saab.

And finally, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu wore Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello. Some madam-at-a-Wild West-brothel realness.

Demi Moore: 'AI is here' & if we try to fight it, 'that is a battle that we will lose'

Demi Moore: 'AI is here' & if we try to fight it, 'that is a battle that we will lose'
Demi Moore is on the Cannes Film Festival?s jury this year, so we?re going to have a lot of Demi photos in the next week-and-a-half. Unfortunately, Demi got some fresh face work ahead of Cannes, and in some photos, she fully looks like CGI. I know we?re supposed to be like ?yas, queen, do whatever makes you happy,? and while I will defend Demi?s right to do whatever she wants, her cosmetic work looks downright off-kilter.

Anyway, fashion notes from Day #1: the polka-dotted jury photocall look was Jacquemus, and it?s interesting and fresh, even though I?m not a polka-dot person. It was cute though. Her evening/premiere look was also Jacquemus, a custom piece, paired with Chopard jewelry. This dress is totally whack, and I?m shocked that it?s custom. It doesn?t fit her! And it looks so dated and 1980s. I do appreciate that she brought out the big jewels though, and that Chopard necklace is epic.

Meanwhile, it looks like Demi was part of that same selling-AI-to-Hollywood meeting which included Sandra Bullock and Reese Witherspoon. In Cannes, Demi got a question about AI and her answer was no bueno.

Demi Moore weighed into the debate surrounding artificial intelligence during the Cannes Film Festival jury press conference on Tuesday, saying that ?AI is here? and Hollywood should ?find ways in which we can work with it.?

Asked by Variety her thoughts on how AI is impacting the movie business and if there should be more regulation in place, Moore said: ?Wow, that?s a big question. I think the reality is that to resist ? I always feel that against-ness breeds against-ness. AI is here. And so to fight it is to fight something that is a battle that we will lose. So to find ways in which we can work with it I think is a more valuable path to take.?

She added, ?To your question of, are we doing enough to protect ourselves? I don?t know the answer to that. And so my inclination would be to say probably not.?

Moore, who was last at Cannes with her body horror hit ?The Substance,? went on to say that ?there?s beautiful aspects to being able to utilize? AI, but it can never replace the human experience or touch. ?The truth is there really isn?t anything to fear because what it can never replace is what true art comes from, which is not the physical, it comes from the soul,? Moore said. ?It comes from the spirit of each and every one of us sitting here, to each and every one of us who creates every day. And that they can never recreate through something that is technical.?

Earlier in the conference, Moore was asked if she believes speaking freely about politics can be detrimental to the movie business, to which she responded: ?I would hope not.?

?Part of art is about expression, so if we start censoring ourselves then I think we shut down the very core of our creativity, which is where we can discover truth and answers,? said Moore, who was last at Cannes with her body horror hit ?The Substance.?

[From Variety]

What the actual fk is that answer? ?I think the reality is that to resist ? I always feel that against-ness breeds against-ness. AI is here. And so to fight it is to fight something that is a battle that we will lose.? Against-ness breeds against-ness? Are you fking joking? You can?t be against something because that breeds more contrarian opinions! The greatest trick the AI devil ever pulled is convincing people of AI?s inevitability and dominance. I?m so disappointed in Demi. With her AI-looking face.

Demi Moore's dog Pilaf got a little matching tie to go with her Met Gala gown
Demi Moore was one of many celebs clad in Thom Browne at Monday?s Met Gala, but her look was truly unlike any other. Her gown was literally a necktie! The bodice from the waist up was the knot, the sculpted arc framing her head was the loop around the neck, and it was hard to see in motion and on the blue carpet, but the front and back of the dress were cut to perfect chevron points. I thought it was a fun interpretation of the menswear/suiting part of the theme, and also kept up Demi?s streak of wearing structural pieces to the event. Since Monday night, Demi has been sharing

Demi Moore wore a Thom Browne structural gown to the Met Gala: fun?
There were too many people in Thom Browne last night to fit them all in one post! The Thom Browne looks were mostly on point, with a few exceptions. Demi Moore was having fun in this wide pinstripe structural gown. Im a sucker for a giant stiff accessory and I really like the circular high back. This look is a traditional gown with menswear elements and its well executed. Demi is having her moment and I would love to see her in more shows and movies.

Tramell Tillman, who plays Mr. Milchick in Severance, made me go ooh who is that? He looks so different and expertly on theme. Check out his velvet tuxedo jacket, cummerbund and black and white patent shoes! Hes also in Thom Browne.

Demi Moore is reportedly 'heartbroken' & taking the Oscar loss 'very hard'
As I said on Oscar night, I didn?t want Demi Moore to win the Best Actress Oscar, but I was still sad that she lost. She had a great ?comeback? story, a great ?it?s her time, after decades in the industry? story. I give her a lot of credit for changing into this Gucci dress and still going out to party post-Oscars. Demi is old-school never let the fkers see you down. Never give them the satisfaction. That being said, Demi had a great awards-season run, picking up a Golden Globe, SAG Award and Critics Choice. She?s fine, according to me. According to Page Six, Demi is heartbroken though. A source told the outlet that Demi ?can?t help but feel heartbroken? and ?Demi is taking this loss very hard because she felt like this was finally her chance to take home an Academy Award? [but she] is thrilled for Mikey and all the other women who were nominated for this award. But of course, it was a huge disappointment not hearing her name be called.? I hope she?s not this upset, and as I said, she still went out and partied and enjoyed herself.

More photos from the VF Oscar party Mikey Madison wore a simple black gown to the VF party I?m so happy for her win, but I desperately need her to give up the satin and taffeta, OMFG.

Demi Moore wore an icy Armani to the Oscars & lost the Best Actress Oscar
While I didn?t want Demi Moore to win the Oscar, I actually felt sorry for her when Mikey Madison?s name was called for Best Actress. To be fair, I think even Demi knew it was a toss-up in the past two months, Demi and Mikey have been splitting the awards down the middle, with Demi picking up the SAG Award, Golden Globe and Critics Choice, and Mikey winning the BAFTA, Spirit Award and a lot of critics? awards. Demi dressed like a winner though her Armani gown was beautiful and I honestly thought she was going to end up winning, based solely on style vibes. She dressed for success! I like that she went for a very traditional look too.

Felicity Jones also wore Armani she?s gone for very sleek, simple looks throughout the awards season, probably because she was never a favorite in Best Supporting Actress. Which is a shame I remember seeing a movie critic/awards-watcher say, back in December, that people should have put some money behind Felicity?s campaign, because she really did a good job in The Brutalist. It?s true. Still, she?s part of yet another Oscar-winning film and she starred opposite another Oscar-winning lead actor (she did the same in The Theory of Everything).

Raffey Cassidy is the British actress who played Zsfia in The Brutalist. A difficult role, and she hasn?t gotten enough attention for what she did in that film. She ended up getting a lot of attention at the Oscars, just because she was the only woman (I saw) wearing Loewe. And it was a really good Loewe too!

Oscar voter: Demi Moore should win because she 'has been around for a long time'
There?s always an ebb and flow from year to year as to how much people are really paying attention to the awards season. Last year saw a lot of interest and engagement with what was happening because of Oppenheimer and Barbie, and then the prominent (and nonsensical) Oscar snubs for Barbie. Plus, those were the two biggest movies in 2023, so people once again cared about awards when they had actually seen the movies. This year is different a bunch of smaller movies have gotten awards hype, a bunch of downer movies are getting awards, and the California wildfires have changed the award-show timelines. All of which means that it?s a really wacky year and people aren?t paying attention because there?s no consensus film which everyone has seen. Still, I?m enjoying the wackiness, even if I?m afraid that a bunch of terrible films are about to win Oscars. Speaking of, here?s the Hollywood Reporter?s first ?Brutally Honest Oscar Ballot? of the season. This Oscar voter is a man in the short-films branch of AMPAS. Some highlights:

Emilia Perez wasn?t in his top ten: ?I liked Emilia Prez when I watched it but, even before all the sh-t that happened [involving lead actress Karla Sofa Gascn], it wasn?t in my top 10. I?d have preferred to see its spot go to Sing Sing, which was underappreciated; or Juror #2, which I really liked; or The Wild Robot or No Other Land, but you know how most of the Academy treats animated and documentary films ? no respect. I do like musicals, and Wicked was tight.

He loves Anora, The Substance & A Complete Unknown: ?I really liked the performances in A Complete Unknown ? the fact that Timmy [Chalamet] and Monica [Barbaro] were both really singing and playing the guitar was incredible. Anora was great ? the story and the performances were really fun, Sean [Baker] directed the sh-t out of it ? but the others did more for me. The Substance was what I love about cinema at its best. It?s so bold ? the story, the sound design, the makeup. They gave the audience an experience. And it?s so rare for the Academy to recognize a horror film, but the fact that this one is kind of about what it?s like to be a woman in Hollywood probably helped more people to connect with it.?

Thoughts on The Brutalist & Conclave: ?Going in to The Brutalist, I?d never heard of Brady Corbet and was dreading the [three-and-a-half-hour] runtime, but the way people who had seen it at the festivals were talking about it convinced me to go to a screening really early in the season, and by the end I really appreciated why he did it the way he did it. It?s just an incredible film ? beautifully shot, amazing performances, and such a powerful story. But Conclave was so interesting and exciting in a completely different way ? and fun, with a little mystery involved. I thought the ending was great ? it wasn?t trying to make a point, it was just a perfect reveal. Edward Berger is an incredible director. His votes for Best Picture: (1) Conclave, (2) The Brutalist, (3) Nickel Boys, (4) Dune: Part Two, (5) The Substance, (6) Anora, (7) A Complete Unknown, (8) I?m Still Here, (9) Wicked, (10) Emilia Prez

His thoughts on Best Director: ?I judge this category like one judges an Olympic sport: the degree of difficulty, plus the execution ? did you stick the landing? I think this category needs to be expanded to at least eight. Edward Berger, RaMell Ross and Denis Villeneuve should?ve been nominated. How many other directors could?ve done what they did? And why is [A Complete Unknown?s] James Mangold in here but they aren?t? He?s a really good director ? he told the story well ? but there was nothing special about the way he directed that film. You want to tell me that directing Timmy Chalamet in New York was harder than directing an epic in the desert? Come on. I was torn between Brady and [The Substance?s] Coralie Fargeat, and I ended up going with Coralie. If she wasn?t there, I?d have picked Brady, because the fact that he made his movie look that good with only $10 million is unbelievable. But I just thought about historical absence [only three women have ever won this category?s Oscar] and high degree of execution ? she nailed it with that film.

Best Actor: ?I had a hard time with this one. Timmy was probably the easiest one for me to let go. Ralph [Fiennes of Conclave], [The Brutalist?s Adrien] Brody and Colman?s [Domingo of Sing Sing] performances were just so good. I got to hear a lot from the Sing Sing guys, and really liked them, and I think that what Colman did for that movie, on and off screen, was just remarkable. VOTE: Colman Domingo, Sing Sing

Best actress: ?I was very strongly considering voting for Karla, but when her tweets started coming out I was flabbergasted ? I was like, ?I can?t believe this person said these things.? And it kept getting worse every day. It quickly became obvious, ?I?m not voting for this person. No way.? After that, it was between Mikey [Madison of Anora] and Demi [Moore of The Substance]. Both of them are at the heart of their films, and I loved both of their films. I?m not opposed to voting for new, younger people, when they are amazing. But Demi has been around for a long time, and she absolutely crushed it. VOTE: Demi Moore, The Substance

Best supporting actor: I thought it was insane that the one guy from Anora [Yura Borisov] got nominated over the other two [Mark Eydelshteyn and Karren Karagulian]. I seriously considered [The Apprentice?s] Jeremy Strong and [The Brutalist?s] Guy Pearce, but at the end of the day I just loved Kieran [Culkin] in A Real Pain.

Best supporting actress: I was never as high on Zoe [Saldaa of Emilia Prez] as everyone else was. I definitely considered [Conclave?s Isabella] Rossellini. But I was just so impressed with Monica in A Complete Unknown. The only other thing I?d ever seen her in was Top Gun [Maverick], and this was like another person. VOTE: Monica Barbaro, A Complete Unknown

[From THR]

It?s interesting that he chose Colman Domingo. I love Colman and Colman is a wonderful actor who deserves the world? but Sing Sing felt like a poorly-made student film and Colman couldn?t save it. Still, it?s nice to know that Brody isn?t a sure thing in that category! I also enjoy this guy?s vote for Barbaro, who is absolutely wonderful in A Complete Unknown, but she hasn?t won anything this season. As for Demi and The Substance? I hated the film, as I?ve said before, and I do not understand why Hollywood is so enamored with it. Is it *just* because of the very obvious and superficial send-up of ageing in LA? But I do think a lot of people are just going to vote for Demi because she?s been around forever and she?ll probably never get another shot at this. There is that sense that Mikey Madison will get another ?chance? at all of this. Still, I don?t get the vote for Coralie Fargeat. He really thought The Substance was the best-directed film of the year??

Demi Moore wore Bottega Veneta to win the SAG Award for 'The Substance'
Given Anora?s surprise dominance at the Producers Guild Awards and Directors Guild Awards, many thought that the tide had turned against Demi Moore and The Substance in this year?s wacky Oscar race. Awards-season prognosticators even described the SAGs as Demi?s last-chance saloon to go into the Oscars with any kind of momentum or hype. Well, it happened. Demi won the lead-actress SAG Award and Anora went home with nothing. So? the guilds are actually split. Directors and producers love what Sean Baker did with Anora, but the actors? guild was like ?nah, we?ll give it to Demi for this terrible horror film.?

Demi wore this very weird Bottega Veneta dress to win her first SAG. I kind of wonder if she thought she would lose? Like, that?s what the dress felt like to me. She looks so thin as well. Anyway, congrats to her. One really nice thing is the all of the best-actress contenders have been really friendly this year, and Demi and Mikey have often stopped to hug each other and their fellow nominees on their way up to various podiums. Demi did it again last night, stopping to hug Cynthia Erivo.

They?ve finally got Mikey Madison dressing like a princess and that?s when she loses! She wore a custom Louis Vuitton in an icy silver-blue.

Demi Moore wore a stunning Alexander McQueen to the 2025 BAFTAs
Demi Moore attended the BAFTAs on Sunday as a Best Actress nominee. She lost to Mikey Madison, in what was probably considered a surprise. Personally, I?ve thought that Mikey should be the frontrunner of the lead-actress race for months, but Demi is the one winning everything (everything except the BAFTA). Demi dressed like she thought she was going to win as well she wore this really striking Alexander McQueen gown which is so detailed and interesting.

Lupita Nyong?o wore Chanel to the BAFTAs this is one of the few times I?ve really loved Chanel on a red carpet. Who knew that Lupita + Chanel was such a great combo?

Anna Kentrick wore an archive Georges Chakra really sexy, and I adore the diamonds and emeralds. She really went all out.

Marisa Tomei in Sophie Couture. I saw some complaints about this and I was like WTF, she looks great. But on second look? the dress is ?off? somehow? I get it. The shoulders throw everything off and the large applique at the waist weighs down the dress (and makes it look saggy). But she?s lovely.

Bonus James McAvoy, looking like a snack.

Demi Moore: 'There's interest in our stories. There's room for us. And that's exciting'
Demi Moore continued her winning streak over the weekend when she picked up Best Actress at the Critics Choice Awards on Friday. I?ve only encountered people who absolutely loved The Substance, or positively loathed it, with no middle ground. For my part, I thought the acting from the leads was excellent ? Demi, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid, too. I didn?t know he had it in him to be that camp! (Does that mean he?s at risk of MAGA rescinding his membership?) In her ?popcorn actress? speech at the Golden Globes, Demi kind of perfectly articulated what this career moment is for her: getting recognition, validation, and respect for her art (an extension of herself), after being put in a box to the point where she believed that?s where she belonged. Well, Demi just took part in Variety?s Awards Circuit Podcast, where she dove even deeper into the craft she brought to this role:

?This whole journey has just been a shock and awe,? she says with humility and amusement. ?I had no expectations, so everything has been a surprise, and honestly, that?s a really beautiful place to be sitting in.?

At 62, Moore has just earned her first Academy Award nomination for best actress, a recognition that was both unexpected and long overdue. Her performance in Coralie Fargeat?s body horror thriller ?The Substance? is raw, fearless and, at times, deeply unsettling. The film, which satirized Hollywood?s obsession with youth and beauty, sees Moore?s character undergo a grotesque transformation after consuming a mysterious product.

?But it?s a moment in front of the mirror where she methodically smears lipstick across her face in a moment of profound self-destruction that is her most haunting moment. ?It was really tough,? she admits. ?Coralie likes to do a lot of takes ? we didn?t do fewer than 15 in each segment. But I knew that this was such a pivotal moment in the film. It?s the beginning of the real violence against oneself.? She pauses. ?It?s also the ?F?k it!? moment. You want her to be happy, and she?s so close.?

The role required Moore to go deep ? deeper than ever before. ?I realized I didn?t have the benefit of feeding off other actors in many of these scenes,? she explains. ?So I had to create a dialogue with myself. I went through every beat, every moment so that when I got there, I could just let it go.?

If there were doubts about her ability to carry a film of this magnitude, Moore never let them in. ?I knew the movie was ambitious, but I also knew that Coralie had something to say ? and she wasn?t just taking cheap shots at Hollywood. The story had substance,? she says, relishing the unintentional pun.

?But what?s more remarkable is the shift that Moore is witnessing and leading in Hollywood. ?We?ve all heard the narrative ? women of a certain age in Hollywood are discarded, overlooked,? she says. ?But look at what?s happening now. There?s interest in our stories. There?s room for us. And that?s exciting.?

She reflects on the moment she felt her career might have reached its natural end. ?I had hit a low point where I didn?t feel like I was expanding like I wasn?t being challenged,? she admits. ?And I thought, maybe the universe is telling me I need to do something else. But then ?The Substance? came along, and I thought, ?Okay, this I can dive into. This is something I can bring all of myself to.??

[From Variety]

Demi is running her campaign so well. I love hearing her break down the preparation she did for the mirror scene, and I bet that?s the kind of thing Oscar voters will also be into. And it?s such a good point, that she is alone in that scene, so she didn?t have anyone else to play off of or react to. She had to create it all herself, which in some ways is harder. In fact, so much of The Substance is Demi on her own, in that apartment. Which brings me to something that I feel has been criminally left out of most Substance conversations: what is the floorplan of that pad?! Seriously, between the endless, curving hallway of catastrophe, to the large (yet more utilitarian than luxurious) bathroom, the layout of that place was the biggest mystery of the entire film, to me.

Anyway, the Variety piece is a great read. The absence of her dog Pilaf is noted (with great disappointment) by the interviewer, and Demi also gives a touching update that she visits ex-husband Bruce Willis and his family weekly, ?because that?s what you do for the people you love.?
