Tina Fey: 'Jokes have changed. You don't poke in the way that you used to poke.'
Are people interested in the Mean Girls musical movie? I genuinely can?t tell if people are like ?hell yeah, this will be kitsch fun? or whether it?s just seen as a money-grab. It?s sort of an updated remake with music from the Broadway musical adaptation, with Tina Fey constantly updating the jokes, characters, script and what have you. Tina recently chatted with the New York Times about the new film and how she?s updated a lot of the jokes. I?m still trying to figure out if people are into it?

On the tagline ?This isn?t your mother?s ?Mean Girls??: ?That came from the Paramount marketing department. I want to comfort millennials by telling them that?s just an expression in the English language. And also, when the movie came out, some people who were older than you also went to it. Some people as old as 26 or 27 may have been in the theater with you.

The edits Fey made to many of the less acceptable jokes: ?I was writing in the early 2000s very much based on my experience as a teen in the late ?80s. It?s come to no one?s surprise that jokes have changed. You don?t poke in the way that you used to poke. Even if your intention was always the same, it?s just not how you do it anymore, which is fine. I very much believe that you can find new ways to do jokes with less accidental shrapnel sideways.

Name-calling in the modern age: ?If we really had people speak to each other the way they spoke to each other in 1990, everyone would go to the hospital. People were really rough. People are still horrible, they?re just more likely to anonymously type it. I would like to take but not teach a graduate school class on the ways in which people are just as divisive and horrible as they ever were, but now they couch it in virtue.

Regina isn?t homophobic: ?I know that even Regina would know what wouldn?t fly. She?s going to find a way to inflict pain on people, but she?s not going to get herself in trouble. For example, there?s a joke in the original movie when Janis gets up on the table and Regina says, ?Oh my God, it?s her dream come true: diving into a huge pile of girls.? It was mine and Sam Jayne?s feeling that Regina wouldn?t try that now because she knows the kids around her would be like, ?That?s homophobic.? She would know not to be homophobic, and hopefully, truly would not be homophobic.

When Regina gains weight in the movie musical, the other students? initial reaction is positive ? but then she?s still shamed. ?Look at the famous people that influence Gen Z, and we?re still always talking about their bodies. We?re either attacking other people for talking about it, or commending people for being a size, or we?re questioning how they got to a different size. It felt like a line to figure out. We still want to be talking about how weird and messy everything is for girls, while acknowledging that these standards aren?t mandatory ? but a lot of people are still signing up for them.

Cultural shifts since the 2018 Broadway show: ?If anything, these behaviors have jumped way beyond just young women. It?s in our politics. It?s in everything. People now like to candy-coat and be very virtuous pointing out why you?re a problem, but it?s the same behavior. It?s still, ?Don?t look at me. Look at them. I?m doing great. I might not have nice hair, but she?s fat.?

The idea of bringing back the original cast & making a straight sequel: ?I have a feeling Paramount would love that. I have not really thought much about that. To me, part of why the stakes are so high in the story is because everyone?s so young and feelings are huge, love is huge and friendship is huge in a way [that it isn?t with] middle-age moms. I love writing about middle-aged people, but I don?t know.

She did approach the original cast members to make cameos but it didn?t work out: ?We?ll never know. They?re busy people, so it didn?t come together, but we tried, and we all love each other.

[From The NY Times]

I find all of the conversations about the changing landscape of comedy writing really interesting, and I like what Fey says about understanding that you can?t have teenagers saying certain things these days, but there?s just a baseline of ?these are universal experiences? too. ?We still want to be talking about how weird and messy everything is for girls, while acknowledging that these standards aren?t mandatory ? but a lot of people are still signing up for them.? That?s exactly what is happening, going hand in hand with people are still horrible, but now they?re couching it in virtue-signaling and they?re doing it online. Girls are still mean to each other, people still call each other names, people still feel uncomfortable and awkward in their bodies, but every generation sucks in different ways.

Tina Fey got the '30 Rock' blackface episodes pulled from circulation
There is no nuance on the internet, and intention and context are often the enemies of cancel culture! I can?t believe I just wrote that, but here we are. I am an unapologetic 30 Rock stan. There are so many jokes on that show which hold up, and there are so many episodes and storylines which are still the funniest pieces of art ever on television. Was every episode, every storyline, every joke a home-run? Of course not. But it was a good show and, like, 80% of it holds up. In four episodes of 30 Rock, white characters are seen in blackface. Does it matter that the context for the?blackface? instances was the fact that blackface is and was extremely racist and inappropriate and horrible? Like, that was the joke that Jenna Maroney is tone-deaf and she thought it would be a good way to win an argument. Or that NBC is so racist, they would hire white actors to play black characters. Those were the context of the jokes they weren?t punching down, they were punching up on clueless white people and corporations.

Instead of waiting for a national Twitter movement to ?cancel? the show, Tina Fey has tried to get ahead of the issue and she?s asked those episodes to be removed from circulation:

?30 Rock? creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, along with the show?s owner NBCUniversal, have asked that four episodes of the series in which characters appear in blackface be removed from streaming and syndication. In a note obtained by Variety, Fey wrote to the platforms saying that the episodes are ?best taken out of circulation? and apologizing ?for pain they have caused.?

?As we strive to do the work and do better in regards to race in America, we believe that these episodes featuring actors in race-changing makeup are best taken out of circulation. I understand now that ?intent? is not a free pass for white people to use these images. I apologize for pain they have caused. Going forward, no comedy-loving kid needs to stumble on these tropes and be stung by their ugliness. I thank NBCUniversal for honoring this request,? Fey wrote.

All of the episodes will be removed by the end of this week, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, while some have already been removed from Amazon and Hulu. The episodes will no longer air as reruns on television, and viewers will also no longer be able to purchase the episodes from on iTunes and Google Play.

The episodes in question are ?Believe In The Stars? (season 3, episode 2) and ?Christmas Attack Zone? (season 5, episode 10), both of which featured Jane Krakowski?s character Jenna in blackface, as well as ?Live from Studio 6H? (season 6, episode 19), which featured Jon Hamm in blackface as part of an ?Amos ?n? Andy? parody, and the East Coast version of ?The Live Show? (season 5, episode 4).

[From Variety]

I think this was a good call, in general. I think that even if the context of the comedy was punching up on white devils (as Tracy Jordan would say), it?s good to acknowledge that blackface is still a tremendously hurtful and gross thing, and that everyone can do better. Tina Fey has definitely had racial blindspots before, as have so many others (that being said, she wasn?t sitting in the 30 Rock writers? room all by herself).

Tina Fey regrets what she said about 'staying home' during neo-Nazi marches

Tina Fey regrets what she said about 'staying home' during neo-Nazi marches
Last August, neo-Nazis marched with Tiki torches in Charlottesville, and then the next day, counterprotesters tried to remind people that neo-Nazis are trash. The neo-Nazis ended up violently attacking many of the counter-protesters, and one young woman was killed. It was awful and it happened in Trump?s America, but Donald Trump wanted us to know that those neo-Nazis were ?very fine people.? Anyway, as that was happening, Tina Fey returned to Saturday Night Live?s summer session to do a bit about Charlottesville on Weekend Update.

I said at the time that I hoped Tina was speaking to her main demographic: white women who love her. The same white women who voted for Donald Trump he got about 60% of the white-woman demographic, and it felt like Tina was trying to speak to those women in particular, and give them a fking wake-up call that this is what they voted for: neo-Nazis marching in the streets. But Tina was criticized for making the argument that we shouldn?t show up and counter-protest when we see neo-Nazis marching down the street. She was criticized by African-American activists in particular, and they used the skit as a moment to educate and inform white allies that no, they can?t be complacent and they cannot sit this one out.

Now, in a new interview with David Letterman, Tina talks about how she regrets the way she wrote that. Letterman started by praising the skit, and this is what she said:

?Every time I?ve ever done some kind of those update things, I always kind of step in manure. The implication was that I was telling people to give up and not be active, and not fight. That was not my intention, obviouslyThe idea was ? if you feed these kinds of trolls ? if you don?t, if you take the air out of it, they disappear faster. And ? I didn?t want any more people to get hurt. If I could put one sentence back digitally, I?d say to people: Fight them in every way, except the way that they want.?

[From The Washington Post]

Tina makes a point of not apologizing for the skit she says she doesn?t want to apologize for or explain any of her comedy but that she wishes she could have a do-over so she could make her argument a bit clearer. I understood both sides of it I understood why people criticized her for complacency, but I also understood the argument of ?just let dumb racists be dumb into the void of nothingness.?

Tina also called out Letterman to his face for the lack of female writers on The Late Show with David Letterman. He tried to play it like he never believed any women would have wanted to work on the show but Tina was like ?we did want to? but honestly, she sort of gave him a pass for that.

Tina Fey to white women: Turn off HGTV & pay attention to politics

Tina Fey to white women: Turn off HGTV & pay attention to politics
The headlines on this story are sort of unfair overall. Huffington Post went with ?Tina Fey Drags White Women Who Regret Voting for Trump.? But Tina Fey wasn?t exactly dragging anyone, I don?t think. Fey took part in a big benefit event for the ACLU in New York on Friday. As part of the benefit, Fey did a discussion with two ACLU people and that?s where she ?dragged? white ladies. Except that she was basically telling white women to check out MSNBC instead of HGTV. Like, the subtext of this is ?acknowledge your privilege, white ladies who voted for Trump.? But it that ?dragging??

White women love Tina Fey, but Tina Fey isn?t too happy with white women, especially the ones who voted for Donald Trump. During ?Stand for Rights: A Benefit for the ACLU? on Friday night, Fey sat down with New York Civil Liberties Union executive director Donna Lieberman and ACLU deputy legal director Louise Melling for a conversation about the battle for women?s rights and the responsibility each of us have to fight for protections that might not directly impact our lives.

After the election, exit polls revealed that a majority of white women ? 53 percent, to be exact ? supported Trump in the election, compared to the 43 percent who voted for Hillary Clinton.

?A lot of this election was turned by white, college-educated women who now would maybe like to forget about this election and go back to watching HGTV,? Fey said. ?I would want to urge them to like, ?You can?t look away? because it doesn?t affect you this minute, but it?s going to affect you eventually. Again, open two windows. Do watch HGTV. [Don?t] turn our attention away from what is happening.?

After questioning Lieberman and Melling about the current state of reproductive rights, Fey expanded her plea to all white women, including herself, to exercise compassion and empathy in Trump?s America.

?I personally will make my own pledge as a college-educated white woman to not look away,? she said, ?to not pretend that things are happening now won?t eventually affect me if we don?t put a stop to it.?

[From HuffPo]

I don?t want to write some huge diatribe against Tina Fey and how she represents Peak White Feminism, mostly because I don?t believe that. I think Tina has said some bad sh-t and I think she has a history of practicing respectability politics on women in general, i.e., if you?re not a sexually repressed, college-educated, heterosexual and married white woman, then you?re not as important as the women who do ?play by the rules.? But I also think that she?s trying to be a more productive ally – as evidenced by this ACLU benefit and discussion – and that she has the power to speak to a lot of those white women who did vote for Trump.

Of course, if you were being ungenerous towards Fey and those white women who voted for Trump, you could argue that they were fine with voting for Bigly and/or staying silent on important issues as long as it didn?t affect them personally. Now that the sh-t is hitting the proverbial fan and the political realities are affecting them, then suddenly we?re all in this together and we need to stop watching HGTV and pay attention because somewhere in this country a white lady is being oppressed!

Tina Fey: 'This society is raising children who want to be famous for nothing'
Ordinarily, The Edit?s editorials are some of my favorites of all the fashion magazines, but I kind of hate this Tina Fey photoshoot. The vibe is very ?aging socialite in her gilded apartment,? and if it was being done ironically, for humor, it would have been cool. But they just did it as a straight fashion shoot and it doesn?t work. So, I was prepared to not like anything about this, but as it turns out, Tina?s interview is amazing! The thing about Tina Fey is that my default setting is ?I love her? but every now and then, I do wonder if it?s possible that Tina is overrated. And then an interview like this comes along and I remember: ?Oh, yeah. She?s really cool.? It?s not that she?s the most quotable person or that she?s some amazing truth-teller, but she?s just honest, self-aware, hard-working, and concerned about what values she?s passing on to her daughters. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

Beauty versus humor: ?For me it was about hitting age 13 and realizing, ?OK, I?m not going to glide by on looks. I?m a normal-looking person, but that?s not going to be where my bread is buttered.? The desire to be funny ? because you are never actually quite sure if you really are funny ? is a coping mechanism, another way of ingratiating yourself. But when you?re 13 and trying to be funny around boys, you end up mocking them and it backfires. You terrify them.?

Her daughters, Alice (10) & Penelope (4): ?My daughters will tell you that I?m exceedingly dull ? the fourth funniest person in the family. My four-year-old is rivaling my husband for first place at this point. The ability to be very cutting that I have ? to size someone up and think, ?This would hurt you, if I said this? ? she has it already at four. And it?s shocking to me. I secretly regard it as a sign of great intelligence, but it?s something that must be managed.?

The Real Housewives: ?Sometimes I like to watch those Real Housewives TV shows, and Alice will be there and I?ll say, ?See how these ladies have put all this goop in their face, isn?t that funny? That?s silly, right? Why would they do that?? And that is hopefully going to be the thing that keeps me from doing it.?

Tina was always the Mean Girl: ?I was, I admit it openly. That was a disease that had to be conquered. It?s another coping mechanism ? it?s a bad coping mechanism ? but when you feel less than (in high school, everyone feels less than everyone else for different reasons), in your mind it?s a way of leveling the playing field. Though of course it?s not. Saying something terrible about someone else does not actually level the playing field. If I meet a girl of 14 or 15 today who is that kind of girl, I am secretly, in my body, afraid. Even though I?m 45.?

Famous for nothing: ?I try to show Alice and Penelope patience and generosity ? patience I fall short on ? and that they can be working women and have a family. And yet ? I joke about this with my husband ? we spend so much time in front of them complaining ? ?I wish I didn?t have to go back to work?; ?I?m so mad I have to work tonight? ? that I feel like inadvertently they?re going to be layabouts on government assistance. When Alice was small, I would bring her to the 30 Rock set because I wanted to show her why being famous is the least important part of anything; it?s a by-product. The making of a story, creating characters, building sets ? these are the really cool parts. Because this society is raising children who want to be famous for nothing, to just have followers.?

Body hair: ?Body hair is a constant annoyance. Mostly I just let it be. Until I have to go into a professional situation and then I have to shave from head to toe.?

The internet: ?Steer clear of the internet and you?ll live forever. We did an Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt episode and the internet was in a whirlwind, calling it ?racist?, but my new goal is not to explain jokes. I feel like we put so much effort into writing and crafting everything, they need to speak for themselves. There?s a real culture of demanding apologies, and I?m opting out of that.?

[From The Edit]

She also had nice stuff to say about working with Alec Baldwin and what kind of great ?old Hollywood? advice he gave to her on the set. She?s also an old-school fan of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, and she says Thom Filicia decorated her apartment. That alone would be a show worth watching: Tina Fey and Thom Filicia decorating something together. I would totally watch that. As for everything else? I love that she admits that she was the Mean Girl, and that it was a defense mechanism when she was younger. I love what she says about her daughters and showing them what work looks like. Tina is great!

Tina Fey Tells The Edit:
As one of the most influential ladies in showbiz Tina Fey rarely shows off her sexy side, but that?s all about to change thanks to the latest issue of The EDIT from Net-A-Porter.

Besides some seriously seductive photos, the ?30 Rock? mastermind also shares a few confessions- ?I was the mean girl [in high school]. I admit it openly. That was a disease that had to be conquered.?

Fey adds, ?It's another coping mechanism - it's a bad coping mechanism - but when you feel less than (in high school everyone feels less than everyone else for different reasons), in your mind it's a way of leveling the playing field. Tina Fey & Amy Poehler discuss careers, friendship: inspirational or insular?
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler star together in the upcoming comedy Sisters. The film looks completely silly, borderline stupid, but you know what? I?ll probably see it and enjoy it. Amy and Tina are magical together, and the film is basically being sold on their decades-long friendship and the spark that happens whenever they?re in the same room together. They cover the new issue of Glamour, ?the social media issue,? which is weird because Tina in particular is not a social media person at all. You can read their funny interview here ? they interview each other, so the piece is basically just a collection of one-liners.

Tina on her ?woman-child? Sisters character: ?Woman-child, I think, is in reference to the fact that there are many male comedians who play man-childs?man-childs is a word. I do think it?s fun to be able to play a character that?s in no way aspirational and in no way a role model, and the more female characters there are on-screen, there?s less pressure on every character to represent everyone. I love playing people who are flawed.?

Amy on ?dressing sexy? in your 40s: ?Of course women in their forties can dress sexy. And, you know, the term sexy is very subjective.?

Tina on dressing sexy: ?Yeah, I do also think that by the time you are in your forties, what you want to wear and what you think is sexy is not always, like, for another person. It?s what makes you feel good…. Sexy is all relative. As an SNL writer I have seen people who are famously sexy, women famous for being beautiful, come in as hosts. The male writers would be so excited; then a couple days in, they are over it. If you know you have 0.000 shot at the person, your body kind of shuts down?and it?s more about who you actually relate to.?

Amy on Tina?s accomplishments: ?I think one of your greatest accomplishments was transitioning from the captain you were at SNL to creating a show [30 Rock]. That is so hard?extricating yourself from a place you were so comfortable and successful, then doing something else so well. That, and the fact that you invented the word flerm.?

Tina on Amy?s accomplishments: ?I would say that one of your greatest accomplishments, Amy Poehler, is that you have so successfully used your art and comedy as a source of positivity in the world, by creating Smart Girls [an online community for girls, encouraging them to be their authentic selves], by making [Leslie in] Parks and Rec not only a positive feminist character but creating a good-hearted worldview within that program.?

Tina on the advice she would give herself ahead of her wedding: ?If I could give myself advice on my wedding day, it would be, ?Hunker down, September 11 is coming.? Because I got married in June of 2001. [Pauses.] Any other advice? I don?t know, maybe for a second I would maybe say, like, ?Start having babies earlier so that you could have maybe had one more,? because I do like how they come out. But at the same time, that would have probably made it hard for me to do some things that I wanted to do in that time.?

[From Glamour]

It?s been said before, of course, but I really love the way Amy and Tina are truly each other?s fans. Like, Amy is probably Tina?s favorite comedian and Amy admires Tina so much. It?s more than friendship between them ? it?s a model of how two successful and bright women can work together, encourage and challenge each other and still support each other professionally and personally. And these are the same women who got told off by Taylor Swift for ?not supporting women.? Seriously.

Tina Fey isn't 'worried?: 'Getting in trouble with the Internet is not real'
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have a new film, Sisters. They play sisters (obvs) and Amy Poehler is the sister with her sh-t together and Tina plays the trainwreck sister. They throw a raging party at their parents? house and that?s the movie. It looks like silly fun, but I?m not sure how well it will do with a December 18 release date. I mean, that?s prime Oscar-bait-release time. I fear the film will get buried in a week, considering Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes out at Christmas. Anyway, Tina has a new interview with The Advocate. She chats about her close friendship with Amy, writing gay characters on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and more. Some highlights:

On her womance with Amy Poehler: ?With a w? I like that. Yes, and what makes it work is that from the moment we met each other in Chicago in 1992, we?ve had tremendous respect for each other. We started on the same improv team, and we were put together like two beautiful baby lions in a cage who miraculously did not have the impulse to eat each other. What makes it great now is that the only time we see each other is when we work on things ? hosting the Golden Globes, doing Sisters ? so those experiences are exciting and fun. We?re both thrilled to be there, and hopefully that?s reflected in the work. She and I haven?t really talked about this, but I don?t know if we could ever do a series together. We?re both alphas who like to do our own thing and then meet up occasionally.?

On an Amy-Tina love story: ?Ooh, maybe we could do a lesbian period piece like a comedic version of Carol, that movie with Cate Blanchett. Really, we should just do a movie with all the women of SNL and set it on the Isle of Lesbos.?

Whether Tituss Burgess?s Kimmy Schmidt character is too stereotypical: ?I know people like Titus. If a person exists, it?s fair game. Titus makes Barbie clothes, for example, and that?s based on an old gay friend of mine who worked as a cater-waiter when he first moved to New York. He was too broke to go out, so he?d literally sit inside and sew Barbie clothes to kill time. I try to base everything in some kind of truth. I don?t worry about what the Internet says. Getting in trouble with the Internet is not real. The Internet is not a force you have to obey.?

What happens when people get offended: ?Well, there?s no consideration of context in comedy these days. There?s also a dangerous desire to silence people when they say something you don?t like. If someone has a crazy opinion, I would prefer they let me hear it so that I can disagree and know who I?m dealing with.?

[From The Advocate]

?I don?t worry about what the Internet says. Getting in trouble with the Internet is not real. The Internet is not a force you have to obey.? That?s a really great perspective, and I also agree with her about ?context in comedy.? Tina has gotten her fair share of ?backlash? and internet grumbles over the years, but she stayed true to who she is and what she finds funny, so people can like or leave it. Oh, and I would totally watch a lesbian period comedy starring the women of SNL. Tina should totally pitch that to a studio.

Tina Fey: 'It's always parent-teacher conference day in my mind'
Elle Magazine?s November issue has three covers, one with Zoe Saldana dancing about her bump (Bedhead?s covering that), one with Jennifer Garner and one with Tina Fey bringing the sass. The theme of this whole thing is ?Women In Hollywood? because the ladies profiled in this issue are all going to be receiving awards at the Women In Hollywood event. There are also profiles of Elizabeth Banks, Brie Larson, Jessica Lange and more. Here are some excerpts from Fey, Larson and Banks? interviews:

What makes Tina Fey so driven: ?I?m not sure I know, but having been an obedient and nerdy kid, I?m very driven to receive praise. If I were a smarter person, I?d be driven to receive money. I?m a dope?all I want is, ?That was real good. Looks like you guys worked real hard on that.? It?s always parent-teacher conference day in my mind.?

What Tina Fey thinks of her successor in TV-writer stardom, Lena Dunham: ?There?s a generational difference in our comedy. Her generation feels that to be nude and to be sexual on-screen is empowered, and we?re on the end of a generation that?s like, ‘You?re not gonna trick me into doing this!’ But they say, ‘We?re not being cute, we?re incorporating our genuine sexuality.’ Which is an improvement. It?s great.?

Elizabeth Banks on her career low: ?There were a couple of auditions?one of them for a slasher film. I was going to be naked and get my neck slashed in a bathtub. I was like, I might be broke right now, but I?ll figure out another way to pay the rent.?

Elizabeth Banks on which actress has the best career in Hollywood? ?I don?t compare my career to other women?s; I compare my career to men?s. Why would I compare my career to the women?s? They?re not making as much money. And they don?t get to work as much. So I compare myself to Paul Rudd. He?s gotten way more opportunities than I have.?

Brie Larson on if she wants to be a ?movie star:” ?I don?t really know what that word means. I want to be an actor. You?re either a personality or some weird character actor. I would prefer to stay anonymous?to make movies but not work on Sunday, to be able to sit at a caf and have no one pay attention to me. That?s the dream, but I don?t think it really works that way.?

[From ELLE]

It never fails to piss me off that Lena Dunham is compared to Tina Fey. Why is that? Why are they compared? Because they?re both white women writer/actresses? Because let me tell you ? Girls is NOTHING like 30 Rock. Nothing! Tina comes from a traditional comedy background and she spent years learning her comedic craft as a writer and performer and you can tell. Lena Dunham was told that she was a special snowflake all her life and that every moment in her life needed to be recorded for posterity and you can tell.

Oh, and Elizabeth Banks is everything!! God, I love her. She?s so smart and awesome. And Brie Larson is so pretentious.
